Would it be a bad idea to use old CRT monitors for fps gaming? I'm interested in how good their response time is supposed to be.

Question guys

I just upgraded to windows 10, it sucks so far.
Anyways, whats even worse is the picture viewer, the damn thing is so obstructive with the "tools" and terrible auto hide arrows.
Is there a better alternative?
Also, I did a clean install, so I dont have the option to use the photo viewer from win 8

the decrease in response time probably isn't significant but there are some """"pro gamers"""" in counterstrike who are autismal enough to swear by CRT

>>58744213
Aren't there like 1-2ms monitors? I'm sure they would be much more preferable than an old CRT and there'd be very little difference in the response time

>>
>>58744653
Most stuff you'd do with a PC that doesn't involve proprietary commercial software. There's lots of games for GNU/Linux now. It may be a tiny minority of them, but still more than you could play in a lifetime.
>>
>>58744653
It's only worthwhile if you're bothered to mess with and customise your distribution of choice, which many people obviously are not.

However, it's not worthwhile at all if you're going to be using videogames or Windows proprietary software, such as for standard graphics/video editing software which is largely for Windows/Mac only
>>
>>58744704
Install a service, forward a port, preferably a non-standard one (inb4 "hurr durr obscurity makes it less secure!" No, it just doesn't make it more secure, and saves your server having to process and write failed login attempts 24/7 and makes targeted attacks more apparent), set up some kind of dynamic dns.

I just use ssh/scp for my files.

Hey guys,

Just built a new computer and need an operating system. I don't need the latest and greatest Windows OS, and old one will do.

Windows seems to only say Windows 10, and I'm not sure if other retailers are legit when they sell older OS.

Any recommendations on where I can buy an older operating system? Can I ask IT at my job for an older key and disc?

I downloaded Linux Mint Cinnamon and currently extracting it to a USB drive. I have never used Linux before and not sure if I am going to want to keep it. Although I don't want to spend $100 on a Windows 10 key. I'm willing to pay like $20-30 for an older OS.

I need a general purpose laptop. I haven't owned a laptop since 2005 and the laptop market makes no goddamn sense, the fuck are all these 2-in-1's and ultrabooks and there seems to be a million different mobile cpu's and they all seem to have performance metrics that are all over the place. I've built a dozen PC's but this shit is incomprehensible. I need a little help cutting through the noise.

The most promising candidate I've found is the Acer Aspire R 15 for ~ $700USD, it has what looks like a basic i5, 8gigs of RAM, and a slow as piss 5400rpm HDD, but the screen seems to be high quality.

All that I'm looking for is something 13-15" that can candle video streaming, some light Adobe Creative Suite work like photoshop / illustrator / dreamweaver, and maybe a game like world of warships from time to time.

A couple of bonus dumb questions:

- Are dell xps laptops worth what dell asks for them?

- Have intel integrated graphics proven to be a decent alternative to a mobile gpu?

- Is Acer a good company?

Lads, I need some help.

> had to pretend that I forgot about them, so bluffed deleting to the recycling bin, restore them in a few days or something
> she wanted me to clear the recycling bin too

How could I recover these files?
This was probably around 5 years ago, but I still use the same Macbook and eternal hard drive - I would store my private folder on either one, if for example I had to use my MacBook for work on the odd occasion. So it's potentially still on either my Macbook or External hard drive.

Could someone recommend a decent recovery method?

Hi... I'm planning to make short films with a cellphone and am about to buy a new one anyways. What statistics should I care about to ensure my quality is the best possible? I know that technical specs aren't all there is to an audiovisual but I'd like to work with the best possible resources, at least.

Like, I heard the camera resolution and framerate is pretty standard across all phones, so it's not really that big of a deal anymore, but I'm not sure how true that statement is... pls help

>>
>>58747841

Lenses and color sensors, obviously cell phones almost universally suck at those things, but there are slight differences between various models. There are also some companies that make camera lens addons for smart phones, you can look into that as well.

Part of what makes movies look "cinematic" is the camera lens, if you just use a stock iphone camera it's going to look like just that, the 2017 equivalent of filming something on a VHS camcorder.

Color sensors matter because not all cameras see color the same way and if you want to get realistic colors for your shoot you want the best color sensors available to get that raw data. You'll probably be manipulating your images anyway in a software suite, but you want to start with as much color info as possible.

>>

I use the windows firewall to block it but I don't think it's stopping it, because when I allow one of those packets in peerblock, it stops looping (I imagine because the packet was received by the target server that sent avast instruction to stop, which means windows firewall is being ignored or something).
I need an AV because my common sense cannot stop packet injections on non-SSL connections, which is an active threat even on trusted domain names.

Are you implying someone would cause a buffer overflow on your web browser and thus execute their code on your machine? Just keep your browser up-to-date.
>>
>>58749063
https://archive.fo/aEeq8
If they can inject code, they can do more than just crashing your browser. Packet injections aside, there's also the possibility of a domain that you trust of getting hijacked and becoming malicious, an AV heuristic protection can detect malicious activity, surely not 100% chance of detecting it but still better than nothing at all.

Halp me bros.
I bought one of those small 11 inches laptops and I love it. It's comfy af. Main problem is fixed 32gb eMmc storage. After windows 10 anniversary update i have only 9 gb left.

I decided to buy a Sandisk usb 3 drive for 32 additional gb. Model is Ultra Fit 32. My plan was to always have it plugged as my software/files drive. But that device was a piece of shit, after 5 minutes of use it gets so hot that you can't even touch it. People reported them breaking/melting their usb ports. Now I have a useless pseudo usb killer and still no permanent storage solution.

Should I keep trying with usb3 drives or go for micro sds?

Regardless of what you're doing, the i5/930m is the better combo. The i5 is a newer generation, and that is going to outweigh a 0.1 ghz difference. The fact that the other is an i7 is almost irrelevant considering they're both U processors. The 930 is going to beat a 920 because at that level of ability 2gb of additional ram is going to be irrelevant. And both cards are so ass that you may actually get better results from the i5's igpu in a lot of situations.

So, a friend gave me a notebook which has an HDD lock that cannot be removed thanks to an unknown master password.
The HDD password itself is known and boots into Ubuntu Mate.
Thing is, how do I remove the master password? According to him, removing the BIOS battery didn't help.

/g/, why doesn't this thing want to work stable at 3.8Ghz, it suddenly reboots at seemingly random intervals even at 1.5V, which is too much for this chip anyways.I don't want to push more volts into it, cause I don't want this shit to burn.

I know this is more a /v/ question, but oh well

Is there a way to actually install old lucasarts scumm games to my Win7 HDD and launch it via Steam instead of having to put a disc in every the time to use scummvm?

Sometimes when I burn a DVD it says the actual amount of space used, like

>124.3MB free of 4.38GB

And sometimes it says it's full but with a lower maximum capacity, like:

>0 bytes free of 4.29GB
>UDF

The discs are all the same as far as I can tell and I'm just using the burning wizard built-in to Windows 8, so what's the difference?

I pay for the "Internet". My ISP have services only in area around me. It's a local company. Since they have "fiber to the home ftth" tab on their web page, and I can get 1gbit service, AND they offer "fiber tv" i am guessing I have fiber.

I've had this dock here for a while. Always worked fine. I just recently got a bunch of 6tb WD Blue drives for free. The dock will show the hard drives in windows, and even will let me move files off it but whenever I try to move a file on to the disk it will time out. If I plug directly into sata on my mobo everything works fine. It reports as a asmedia ASM1053E and will show the right SMART data for the drive thats plugged into it. It does also report as a SCSI which doesn't seem right to me?

Anyways i'm just gonna assume this older dock is not gonna play nice with bigger disks. What is the current standard for HD docks?

Looking to buy a new monitor sometime soon. Which of these is a good choice?

Only real factors are:
1.) 27"
2.) 1440p
3.) Decent name brand
4.) Ability to buy more of the same style for a uniform multi-monitor setup sometime down the road.

I have an Acer H243H right now which I think is a TN display and doesn't have Gsync or anything, so I don't feel the need to have that, unless it really is beneficial for moderate gaming.

Say guys i decided to do a system restore on my dell laptop and now it wont even boot up in safe mode. Ive also tried to install windows 10 back on to it, and it does not seem to have worked, what would be my best course of action to take now?

The windows 10 i tried to install was downloaded from another computer, and the Dell it's self was updated to windows 10. Should i try to buy a windows 10 CD, take it to a computer shop, or just sell the damn thing?

I need to graph an integer function similar to:

floor((x+3)*y/128) - floor(x*y/128)

with each point then taking a different color depending on the result.

Is there an easier way to do this than generating the function's results as a matrix in CSV and then feeding it to a spreadsheet's conditional formatting?

Pic: hand-calculated example (ideally I'd be able to hide the values)

Regardless of whether you are using DHCP, your router's local IP doesn't change. That would throw your network into an unnessesary brief chaos everytime it did. Connecting devices on the other hand are fine being assigned temporary IPs by DHCP or static ones you set, provided there are no conflicts between the two.
