Has anyone ITT moved to USA from Europe? How did it go for you (the first year or so)? Did you have trouble finding work, getting a new education, getting loan?

How long did it take for you to get actual citizenship?

>pros vs books
more lightweight/compact, you can carry a huge pile of books around with you no problem
has text search which is quite useful for textbooks if you're looking for a specific thing
lets you pirate textbooks instead of paying 200 fucking dollars for the latest edition of a book on a subject that hasn't changed in 50 years

>pros vs tablets
if you get one with an e-ink display it won't strain your eyes so you'll be able to read for hours with no headaches etc
also if you're a shitter like me with no attention span, having a separate ebook reader that doesn't have all the apps you'd use for fucking around on a tablet is nice

Yeah, of course you don't. 5k is retarded. There is literally no reason to pick that number of pixels other than marketing. Nothing is configured with 5k in mind, it doesn't have the 4:1 scaling from 1080p benifit, 4k is already pushing the useful range for a 27 inch display, and no picture/video you produce will be shot or edited in that res. And if you were, for some stupid reason interested in going beyond 4k, the next logical step would be 8k, as that seems to be the meme standard that's making all the manufactures get all misty eyed. But seriously dude, the main thing that screen is selling is bullshit.

A lot of programs have network setting that let you specify a proxy. Check if your VPN provides a socks5 option.

I doubt your game gives the option. From a practical standpoint a proxy would add to much lag.

I know that people will run Windows 10 under Linux using KVM or something to achieve near native performance in their vidya games while also not having to dual boot. In my understanding, the way that works means the GPU would only be seen by the windows half, and Linux would only be able to use the iGPU.

Would there be a way to make that work with an eGPU like the Razer Core? I'm much more of a laptop man, and now with more and more laptops sporting TB3 ports, the dream of being able to have a pretty light and battery efficient laptop that can still play new gaymes on good settings while stationary sounds great.

However, I also fucking hate Windows and every second I use it to do something other than video games is pain. I'd prefer not to Dual-Boot just to play games, so

Is it possible now to pass-through an eGPU to a KVM Windows 10 running on Linux, or is that impossible? If Impossible, is it inherently impossible, or could that maybe change in the future? Thanks.

You can't upload only audio to Youtube. It's a video website, not an audio one.

You can even use ffmpeg to do combine a JPG with an MP3, there's really no reason for you not to be able to do this.
ffmpeg -i image.jpg -i audio.mp3 -acodec libvo_aacenc -vcodec libx264 video.mp4

Batch merge the WAV files with the JPG with ffmpeg. You can download ffmpeg here https://ffmpeg.org/download.html and if you're using Windows you can use a batch script in the folder with the image and wav files, something like this:
@echo off
for %%f in (*.wav) do (
if not exist "%%~nf.mp4" (
ffmpeg.exe -i "image.jpg" -i "%%f" -acodec libvo_aacenc -vcodec libx264 "%cd%\%%~nf.mp4"
)
)

Hey I'm having this issue with my firefox browser. I know its firefox because it doesn't happen in IE or Chrome

I think its a screen tear but it doesn't look like other tears.

This streaming website I frequent often uses JW player and when we watch movies I get this thin little bar at the top, pic related. Its pretty static and occasionally updates to catch up with the movie but quickly freezes again.

If I hover my mouse over it, it goes away for a few seconds before tearing again.

Any ideas as to what this is or how to fix it?

So far I've

-updated flash
-updated my GPU driver
-restarted my computer
-restarted by browser
-fucked with ublock a little, I can't see any bad things to block
-disabled ublock
- installed youtube Flash to HTML5, an extension to force HTML5 in youtube videos as a stretch

It happened yesterday but I don't recall the first day it happened before yesterday

I just noticed another symptom

It doesn't happen on my 1080p screen but it DOES happen on my 1440p screen

also its fucking vertical now

on the left side of the screen you can see the bar, its about as thin on the side as it was horizontal
>>
>>58757802
Then chances are that it's a flash-specific problem.

All I can suggest is make sure that the flash you've updated is firefox-specific, or if you can't solve then you can always disable the flash plugin or try an extension which forces HTML5, or just use Chrome/IE for this website.

>>58757840
Yeah, might be an outdated or defective version of the flash JW Player or set up incorrectly by the website. Not much else you can do

in the US uploading is much more illegal than downloading

however 999 times out of 1000 you won't get in legal trouble for torrenting anyways. the worst you'll likely see is a pissy letter from your ISP threatening to cut off service if you keep doing it
>>
>>58758193
Not what I meant. For instance I wouldn't consider popcorn time, because that uses torrents and you can get a letter from your ISP. But "letmestreamit.com" type sites never get the end user in trouble, so if something was streaming something like that it would be different. That's more of what I'm asking about.

I have a family member going through CA->USA immigration, so hopefully this'll help

>How did it go for you (the first year or so)?

You better bend over, because the Gov will be so far up your ass they'll be investigating what you ate for breakfast.

>Did you have trouble finding work, getting a new education, getting loan?

You're not allowed to work on anything but a Worker's Visa, Family Immigrant Visa (IR1/IR2/CR1/etc.), Permanent Resident status, or Citizen status, unless you want to get ICE'd back to Mexico. You'll need a SS# before you're allowed to be employed. If you want to go under the table, you'll be doing bitch work for some restaurant with a lot of Miguels.

Student visas are possible if your University sponsors you. Becoming a student as a non-permanent resident isn't really an option for most cases. See https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/eligibility/non-us-citizens for the general requirements

Big loans are generally not given to people who are not on a work visa, a refugee, a permanent resident, or a citizen. They'd be done through your sponsor.

>How long did it take for you to get actual citizenship?

Unless you have family in the USA, 10yr+ through the lottery. If you marry someone in the USA, or you have family, you need to be a Permanent Resident for 3 years, then you can apply for Citizenship. The entire process usually takes at least 5 years at the speed the Gov works.

Note, my experience is with a IR1, and won't be applicable to everyone. But unless you've married someone, stay where you are tbqh.

It's interesting how people so often default to using computers for things on which they have no intention of doing any computation or ever having more than one fragile copy. Paper and pen is often the better option.
>>
>>58758696
Notes are easier to copy and view in digital form. Paper and pen is only relevant for math notes and work, but even then, I immediately scan it to my computer.

>Is it worth it to completely shut down devices and remove your digital footprint a la following all the security guides on the wiki, even if you don't do much on a computer besides browse the internet and use some office applications

It's not a black/white situation. You need to judge how inconvenient you want to make your life in order to increase security. What you should ask yourself is:

Do you have something you want to hide? This means
>encryption keys
>passwords
>illegal content
>NDA'd content
>private items

Are you at a risk of being raided or having your device being stolen when you do not have access to it or during travel between locations (e.g. laptop theft)?

After you can answer these questions, you should plan accordingly.

>Is it possible to live in today's society without a smartphone?

Yes, but finding a dumbphone for cell purposes is becoming more difficult.

It has something to do with windows and windows update.

System.exe takes up 100% disk and often 50% or more of my cpu in task manager. I've narrowed it down to this and done a bunch of shit to fix it, but nothing worked and I don't know what else to do.

Windows update seems to be apart of it. It will constantly try to run in the background and slow my computer down further. I've disabled it, but system.exe is still fucked.

I ran sfc /scannow and dism /healthrestore but both failed to repair corrupted windows files.

So, is this hardware or should I get a copy of windows to fresh install with?

My fan is also damaged, so the temp of everything is always around 70 degrees, but I don't think that's the problem, and I'm recieving a replacement tomorrow.

Pumps make noise. Here's how you do:
>Giant tower cooler, Noctua D15 for example
>Overkill high efficiency PSU with good ratings (no fan doesn't mean no coil noise)
>Fluid dynamic bearing fans, Noctuas use a variation of this
>Case sound dampening
>All SSD
>For insanity mode, remove all fan restrictions

Alternatively, you could put the computer in a different room entirely.

I restarted the computer. Windows attempted to update, failed, and reverted.

I then put the computer into a clean boot safe mode and ran sfc /scannow again.

Funny part is sometimes the PC is completely fine, and others it hangs really hard. I assume this is because of windows update trying to update, but it still happened after disabling all windows update services through services.msc

System.exe in task manager only takes up 0.5-2.5 mb of disk, yet it's at the top of the list and disk usage says 100%, despite my disk capacity certainly being higher than that. Mozilla firefox could be using 2.5 mb and the disk will be 30%, then system.exe will acting up and disk will shoot up to 100% only over like 2 mb.

Does this problem sound like something a clean windows install with a disk or thumb drive could fix?

Because I reset my PC it was returned exactly to the way it was when I bought it. The PC was bought shortly after Windows 7 was released and came with it.

Using Arch with I3wm. When I scrot it comes out like this. Have no idea what the box on the right is. The Workspace I am trying to capture has a floting window which is my terminal and nothing else on it. My bar doesn't even appear. Any ideas?

Not sure what you mean. If you have the old link and it still works then by all means post it. Just that the old one was for windows 7 and I'd rather not need to go through the update to 10.

So I am under the impression that I cant install windows 10 directly onto my new SSD for my new computer, and that I have to first install it onto my HDD and then migrate it over, is this correct? Or can I do a fresh install of windows onto a completely new SSD?

It's really fucking easy to get a windows 10 iso, you can get that straight from microsoft.
Get the windows 7 iso from microsoft's former partner, corenoc digital river.

Do you still need to reinstall all drivers and Windows if you are going from amd to amd or Intel to intel?

Like if you go from a Celeron to a i5 or Athlon to 9570, where you would need to put in a whole new mobo

>>58761570
Do you mean to say you already have an existing Windows install on the HDD? You can skip that and directly install 10 on the SSD. This might end up giving you a dual-boot install which can be useful for troubleshooting purposes.

Has that ever actually been proven? I thought that was just a myth started by the soft drink companies because they were worried that sugar substitutes would hurt their sales.

Soft drink companies use artificial sweeteners themselves.

Windows sells 10 for around $200 physical so I didn't think the ISO would be 'free' or it would ask me to pay or something.

Windows is sometimes able to do a startup repair and detect the nessesary drivers. But really it's best to do a clean install when you can.

I'm looking to buy a portable hard drive, at least 2TB. I'm just going to use it to store my mongolian children's cartoons so it's not too important, but I'd like to get something reliable. It's been hard to find data on the reliability of portable drives though. Any opinions on which ones are good or brands / models I should avoid? Right now I'm leaning toward Seagate Backup Plus 4TB.

I dunno, I just remember reading something like that, the whole cyclamate scare being cooked up back in the day to kill off a competitor drink that relied on it. Can't remember the specifics now, but since the chemical isn't even used in the US anymore (even though nobody was ever able to reproduce the results of that first study) I guess it doesn't really matter either way now. Not sure that it has too much bearing on other sugar substitutes used these days.

Hey guys, I will be visiting USA in 2 weeks, more precisely - NY and DC.

I was planning to buy Nvidia card + intel CPU, but I dunno your local retailers. Could you give me a piece of advice on where to buy at and how to save some money?

F.e. here in Russia we have several big retailers who sell relatively cheap, they specialize on electronics.

Thanks in advance!

the apartment building I'm renting in offers wifi, but you have to log in through a default redirected page and the plans for data are insanely expensive
Is there a way I can get around this?

I've noticed if I use google chrome it breaks their thing and I can surf freely (building is owned and run by mainlander chinese so things aren't too complex) my only worry here is being caught and kicked out. Is there anything I can do to hide my traffic and device from any network administrators? Would a VPN achieve this?

Should I tell a prospective employer that I jack off to Anime?
>>
>>58761967
Well, you are solving the puzzle for the first time while the best stats will likely be people who have returned to it and tried to optimize it as much as possible.

Also most of those will be people who have tried specifically to optimize for that one metric, usually to the detriment of others, and they may be using tools that you might not even have access to early in the game.

So don't feel too bad, you're ok.

It has been almost 10 years since I last used Windows.

But now I need to install it again for reasons.

Windows 7 looks like the last good release. 8 and 10 look really bad. Is this accurate?

So... what's the preferred way to install Windows 7.

I'm really afraid of shady activators giving me malware.

Linux has really spoiled me...

Any help is appreciated.

Illustrator is still big and common with business. But new alternatives can offer many of those features at a much lower cost, so newer artists are willing to work with them given the much lower cost.

I think over time Adobe will have to lower their prices and market better on their powerful end to end solutions (and they are powerful) or more and more new people will just find alternatives that work for their situation. From a larger industry wide view it is nice to have Adobe as the one stop shop for artist software, but if they keep charging like they do people will cobble together new ways to get things done given the boom of low cost alternatives.

That said if you got money and plan to do this as a life long thing then Adobe can still be worth it, but it is on a downtrend currently as it is becoming a generational thing. Funny thing is some older business demand artist use Adobe, but those will usually help pay for the tools as well.

Do your own research, comics billboard markets are different as is whatever your situation.

My fans hook up to a cable which is attached to what seems to be a Molex plug. It can plug into stuff in the front and accept a plug from the back.
My peripheral/molex PSU plug won't fit into it though. Is it meant for something else or is it just shit quality? I'm currently only running one fan connected directly into the MB.
