IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

As an x201 user, they're great and work just fine for most needs, but replace the thermal paste. It's 7 years old now. If you replace the thermal paste (and buy a new fan) you'll get 30-40C idles and 70-80 load temps. I ran Prime95 for 24 hours and only got it to 92C peak (average temp 85C) in a ~70F ambient room.

As a point of reference for speed, they're about the same speed as the top of the line 2016 12" Macbooks, so good enough for most tasks, but more demanding things may take a while.

>>
>>58722119
I would so fucking buy one. Imagine something about 2x as fast as the RPi3 with hotswappable 24-hour battery life and user-serviceable components.

>>58722157
Take it apart and use compressed air to blow the shit out of the ventilation holes. My laptop was previously owned by a smoker, and the amount of shit that came out when I opened it up to clean it was disgusting. I had to take 91% isopropyl alcohol and then after it dried ammonia to the RAM shield because it was *caked* with cigarette ash. It's now clean, but good god was that an unfun (but satisfying) cleanup.
>>
>>58722219
Is 91% safe to use? My understanding was any water content is bad news. I only have 99% anyway, to my knowledge isoproplol alcohol doesn't even have any disinfecting abilities by itself, some shit about water being needed for osmosis and cells or some crap.
>>
>>58722277
Anything above 90% is safe to use, 99% is the safest, though. I'd recommend unplugging all sources of power if you're taking it apart regardless, though.

Got my company laptop today and it's a W530. One day spend with it and fucking love it.

Such a good keyboard, great track pad, nice chunky track pad buttons, back light lit keyboard, physical switches, quiet just overall a great piece of tech.

Bit outdated as it only has an i7 3840qm and 16gh of RAM but gets the job done for what I need.

x201, x220, t420, or the s versions of any of those. x201 is the only one with a 16:10 display of any of those, but it's relatively slow. I don't notice it in day to day tasks, but when compiling heavy things, or running javascript-heavy websites, you can see the CPU chug.

At least it only needs to be done since the CPU is soldered. It'd be fine having it hard to access if Lenovo could paste it properly in the first place.

What's the minimum processor generation I should look at?

Plan on running either Debian or Arch with i3 wm, will be doing development. Android Studio is a slow af on Windows I know (at least in my experience on several PCs), so I'm guessing it will be on GNU as well. I don't wanna spend much more than $300 so I've been looking at 4th Gen i5 and i7s. Also SSD is preferred.

Thanks in advance.

>What's the minimum processor generation I should look at?
2nd gen is probably the best value, but 3rd is worthwhile if you can take advantage of the performance boost.

>I've been looking at 4th Gen i5 and i7s
4th Gen and after will mostly be ultra low power (U) processors. A recent U CPU can be comparable to a 3rd gen in performance but not power use, so if you don't need long battery life then you won't gain much by spending more.
>>
>>58731449
Yeah they were Us, didn't realize what the U signified cause I haven't looked at processors in years. Thanks! I'd definitely rather save the money and have less battery, I'll never really use it on the go anyways, battery just needs to last my drive to school and etc.
>>
So I finally came to decide between:
>A W520
333 Trump dollars.Comes with only 4GB of RAM and I'm sure that comes with an Nvidia Quadro M1000. It's in good condition, has a quad core i7 and the color calibrator. The deterrent is if I buy it I have to wait three days to recibe it.
>Dell M4600
540 Pence shekels. Comes with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. It has the Quadro M2000. Has a FHD panel, but I'm not sure if the panel is IPS or TN. It has a numpad keyboard that doesn't bother me, but I find awkward in a 15 inch laptop. I get it the same day that I press buy in my third world ebay.
How is the trackpoint and the keyboard of the Dell and the Thinkpad? Are they comparable?
I'm typing in a X220T and absolutely love the keyboard, even considering that flexes. I heard that the W520 hasn't that problem.
BTW, I'm in Chile (shitskin Texas)
>>
>>58731417
The only advantage of that over a T500 is going to be portability and that it's a tablet model. I don't see why you'd go with that over something more recent, it should be easy enough to find a T420 or something at much the same price unless you're keen on a tablet.
>>
>>58719426

Any news on the Kaby Lake Thinkpads?
>>
>>58731561
I'm not torn on the tablet aspect, though it's nice.
I don't know anything about Thinkpads because this one has lasted so long.
Thanks for the advice and I'll probably look for a T420, no idea what i'm doing so I appreciate it.

We'll one valid reason, I guess, is that some cards seem to have better Linux and BSD support than others. Signal strength is more of a function of the antennas which is model-specific and it will not be improved with a new card.

Going off some quick searches on PassMark, U models start to do better than comparable 3rd Gen M around the 6th Generation, but it's a fairly minor advantage. If I didn't need the performance then I'd even consider late model thinkpads myself, but unless you can fork out several grand for a modern workstation then from what I can tell, you're better off with a W530 which is a fraction of the price.

You only need extra power for the eGPU as your ThinkPad has its own power supply.

You can deduce the maximum power drain of your graphics card from the power connectors it has. PCIe bus is speced for supplying 75W, 6 pin power connector is another 75W and 8 pin connector is 150W.

You should have some extra capacity as some GPUs may draw a little extra for short periods of time.

Personally I have an eGPU which has no additional power lines (75W max) so I use a 100W power brick for it. Bricks are much nicer than an ATX psu with all the dangling cables.

Low voltage RAM should work fine even if it's not being run at low voltage. It'd be advantageous to have it if you ever want to put it in something that can use low voltage ram even if your current computer doesn't. Of course it's going to be a question of whether the cost is justified, though PC3L is probably cheaper than PC3L anyway if you're buying new.

I'll be honest I'm mainly asking because I don't know how to gage processor speed very well in relation to running modern applications. My desktop has an i5 3.1 Ghz and its pretty old so when I see i7 2.0 Ghz I have no idea if thats good or not.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for school (comp sci) since the monitor on my old cheap laptop kinda died.
I'm planning on unironically continuing using Gentoo as my primary OS.
I love the Thinkpads, i think they are sexy and all, but jesus christ, why is the thinkpads two times the price of other Lenovo laptops, with basically same specs?
I currently have the Lenovo B51-80 in sight and would upgrade the ram to 8GB. This would cost me 540 USD (I'm living in Denmark).
Why would the same specs in a Thinkpad cost litterally twice as much? I get that the build quality is superior, but on my somewhat tight budget i can't reason my self to pay this much for a little less plastic.

What am i missing out on if i go with a cheaper Lenovo compared to the Thinkpad?

Nope. I should, though.. How easy/hard is it to tear down to get to the fan?

Disconnect the battery and vacuum clean it very cautiously. At least what I did.

Pretty easy. Only done this on a w520, but could probably just remove the keyboard, maybe also the palmrest and blow some compressed air straight out the vent.

dont listen to those faggots bro. find a schematic for the bios chip, and ground the voltage/hot pin with the ground/negative pin. use a paperclip or whatever. power on the laptop. that will clear the bios
>>
>>58742044

I'll look it up.

Firefox is also out of FSF criteria, because some DRM they included in the software. It's actually uncompatible with "your-freedom"

How do I like parabola? I like the fact that everything is my way, as I had to configure everything, but I hate that there is too much little shit that breaks, or is just annoying, because the obvious option is not the default option. Let me enumerate:

>TRIM is not enabled by default in fstab
>It was a real pain in the ass to make the partitions, and the DATA partition, I've still not made it.
>I didn't make the DATA partition because gparted needs some missing dependency that isn't written down in the fucking dependencies field.
>The WiFi settings are forgotten when you turn off, so I have to re-enter the password over an over again.
>After installing gnome, the terminal doesn't work, because the instructions that set the locale, don't set the locale for gnome.
>"your-freedom" package, uncompatible with everything for protection, but it's actually designed according to the political autism that hits the author in that moment.

I'm this close just install Fedora and leave the Arch way, but it falls into a boot loop with libreboot.
>>
>>58742348

just forgot:

>yaourt is not compatible with "your-freedom" because it downloads packages BEFORE you can check PKGBUIILD.
>>
>>58742348
>>58742362
Do you have experience with arch? How does it compare?
>>
>>58742378

I don't have a balls-deep experience with arch. Only in a virtual machine.

I figure that the problems I'm having are also arch's. (I search and find every solution on the Arch forum, so...)
I guess that the only difference, is the "linux-libre" kernel, and the "your-freedom" package.

The installation guide with arch will yield some errors if you try the same on parabola. The parabola wiki has a somewhat pathetic install guide, in which you can at least pacstrap the base utils into the disk, and has little changes here and there compared to the original.

I had Antergos installed in this computer before the libretardation, so I'm used to pacman and all the architecture. But this hassle until you have an usable OS is ridiculous.

I guess i should be writing down everything it needs to be done until everything is fixed, and put it in a macro that does all the work for me, in case I have to install again. (I'm doing it in a sort of clumsy way)

>>
>>58741841

I'm decided to use Iridium, given the fact that the FSF frowns upon bookmark synchronization.

The "Sign in for iridium" thing was on the github issues before they decided to awkwardly remove them, but google has them in cache, so maybe I can do something to fix it:

it's hard to find since its meant for service technicians.
you can find for "ThinkPad Hardware Maintenance Diskette" or "ThinkPad Hardware Maintenance Key"

it seems you're lucky! someone is hosting the diskette!

Are my current specs.

I'm looking at the p40 yoga with this processor Intel Core i7-6600U Processor (4MB Cache, up to 3.40GHz)

Is 8gb of ram enough or should I push to 16gb?

I think I can live with a 256gb SSD because I plan on getting several WD mypassport 4TB drives.

I want a workstation I can reliably use for long tours in a submarine. I'm also going to be getting an e-reader and a tablet. It might seem retarded to get a 2 in 1 and an E-Reader and a tablet but everything I've been hearing is that you want redundancy in stuff while at sea because if something breaks you're fucked and you won't have anything to do with your time but jack off and cry.

I might even pick up an older gen 2 in 1 or some other make 2 in 1 as a backup laptop just in case this new one shits the bed.

I more meant the dislike of gaming laptops. A desktop just literally isn't an option in this scenario or I'd build a cheaper budget one with like idk an nvidia 770 or something that I could pick up for cheap from recycled enthusiast builds.

Since the T460 has dog shit displays and the T470 will supposedly have the exact same ones, is it possible to simply put the T450s panel into the T460? I'm still hoping the T470 will have something better, but knowing it's Lenovo I'm very doubtful
>>
>>58744170
Still available?
>>
>>58744085
Given that you're going to be stuck underwater and can justify spending that much on a single machine to be as comfy as possible, it might be one of the few situations that buying that thing sounds reasonable. As far as specs go it's probably as suitable for your needs as anything, and anything more powerful will probably have far less utility. My only worry is that it end up being limited by cooling if you're really pushing it, but I doubt you'd be loading it that badly.

Though if you haven't already been down on a sub though then you might find that you have far less time/willpower for gamedev than you'd expect anyway.
>>
So I flashed a modded bios to my T410, and it does the "5 beeps, pause, 5 beeps" thing whenever I boot. I'm trying to reflash the original firmware but I can't seem to get it to work through the windows application (it'll say the versions are the same) and I can't seem to boot into an ISO because Unetbootin just doesn't get it right).

I'm at a loss right now, my only idea right now is to try and use Phlash64 within Windows and try and find the bios file within the windows application install folder but I'm not sure what file I'm looking for to flash.
