IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

How cool does something like an x220 run?

I'm looking for something small to shitpost and code on when I'm laying in bed. I hate it when noisy fans are constantly running though. Anyone have experience undervolting or underclocking them to make them even cooler/get better battery life?

>old vs new keyboards comparable to mech vs chiclet
No, the old thinkpad keyboards are about as silent as the new ones. Much more silent than a mech kb. The typing feel isnt really like mechs either, just the best one laptops have to offer, which is still really good.
>>
>>58702121
These are two completely different kinds of laptops and you're retarded for asking this question. An x220 is a super compact business end laptop, where as the e430u is simply a compact business end laptop. Not to mention that the e430u is better in terms of hardware, an entire generation ahead in fact. You should really be comparing the e430u with a t430.

The layout is obviously whack, but does the xx30 keyboard actually feel worse too? I was under the impression that they had the same actuation feel/travel distance as the xx20 keyboards, it was just the layout that was derided.

the xx30 keyboard doesnt actually feel bad to type on it definately isnt worse than the xx20. The layout itself is just terrible and it goes greasy and shiny (especially the backlit one) you have to wipe it down frequently.
>>
>>58702729
that ivy bridge cpu in the dell will perform worse than the sandy bridge cpu in the x220 due to it being an ultra low voltage model. That being said the onboard video will be better on the dell as opposed to the x220.

Is there a definative reason for me to not get a latitude E6220/e6220 or Elitbook 2560p/2570p/2170p over a thinkpad x220/x230? Because the elitebooks and latitudes often go for quite a bit less than thinkpads in my neck of the woods. Would it be wise to sell my T510 and get an X220? I don't need a huge laptop. Would I pull a profit in the process? The T510 is 1600x900, good shape, has a hybrid drive, memory upgraded to 8gb and Nvidia GPU.
>>
>>58703328
my thought exactly. I always check on the temps, one of the x220 I have had at least one year of light use before I got it. The other one from where I'm typing this was turned on for the first time less than a month before I got it, it's brand new.
Right now I was using livestreamer+mpv to watch twitch, also shitposting and the temp was hovering between 50°~55°C.
Honestly can't complain.

Hi /tpg/ i bought a used x230 with an ips panel and if i display a static image (or for example the browser adress bar) for more than 2 minutes i can see the outlines of it on dark backgrounds for approx. 5 more minutes. Is ghosting in that extend usual or have i got a damaged panel?
>>
>>58711377
for shitposting and general fuck around linux is fine and has great battery life. I also use mine to work and if I ever need something from windows I have a minimal Win7 VM that I can run some shit legacy software that sometimes gets used at the office.
>>
>>58711674
in some IPS panels is sorta extended. I haven't timed how long it stays but also it's minimal on the newer versions of the IPS panels. Search around on which one is the default on your laptop and check if there's one you can upgrade to. Changing the panel is really easy and you can sometimes even get them on sale on amazon.

You can literally do anything besides heavy gaming or heavy rendering. And in either of those cases you're better off with a desktop or workstation anyway.
>>
>>58704567
http://mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net/

The T420 probably has an OEM key for professional or home premium; look under the battery. If it gives you any problem just activate with daz or kmspico. Or better yet just upgrade to Debian unstable GNOME or XFCE, or even Xubuntu.
>>
>>58707155
I'm really tempted to look for an X41 as a project when I have some free time in a month, what's the SSD situation? I remember it being an ordeal with my T43p a few years back, but the X41 has a 1.8" slot so probably even more difficult. Don't care about the size because it'll just be for a super minimal PC.
>>
>>58706424
you can do gaming on the xx30 series or later, integrated GPU's will do cleverly optimised games (MGSV, The Witness,) or ones with last-gen engines (CS-GO, Mass Effect, most UE3 games) while D-GPU options will do all but the newest games, just on low-medium settings.

If you get a dedicated GPU laptop, don't get an i7 - it'll be wasted because everything will throttle. Instead get a cooler i5 and you'll find everything performs better overall.
>>
>>58703037
I genuinely think the typing feel is better than the xx20.

420 or 430 with 1600*900
clear it thoroughly after purchase
8GB RAM
cheapest SSD you can find for OS
HDD caddy for data
optionally: dock & external screen

The absolutely cheapest you can go around it would be getting couple defunct pieces that each fucked up different part and Frankensteining them together into a functional one, but it takes patience and some luck to get the "compatible" junk together.
>>
>>58712327
Enjoy the downgrade
>>
>>58712723
X41 doesn't even have SATA, so SSD situation is dire.
>>
>>58713385
I'm not aiming for a new main computer. I just want to know whether I could go 100% free and still get everything I need to do done. If I do, that's nice. If not, I still got a Desktop and my X220. Either way the X60 is gonna become my official shitposting machine. Also I need to watch space documentaries on YouTube or I'm not able to sleep. I did that with my Nexus 7 but it recently died so the X60 is gonna be useful no matter what.
>>
>>58713401

Well a laptop is usually a lot more expensive than a hard drive, and a hard drive is also a lot more sturdy than the laptop itself as it is.

Try and drill through a hard drive sometime. See what happens.

Durability is the absolute least of reasons to ditch spinning rust.
>>
>>58713610
>As if you haven't even once dropped a laptop...
No, I value my electronics.

>>58713706
Drop the laptop once while the hard drive is spinning and it's pretty much beyond rescue.

A note is that my seller's name had a letter and a series of numbers and zero feedback, and was located in Guangzhou as well.
>>
>>58715252
>>58715268
Also, there are "many such cases" that seem to be popping up in the "cheap laptop from China" category. Most are:

>between $40-50 USD
>Located in Guangzhou
>Sold by a user with a seemingly randomly generated name
>Sold by a user with zero feedback
>Have some sort of punctuation in the description
>Are offered with free international shipping
>Seller's account started October 2016 to November 2017. (Could have been accounts started to be activated when they could list "Buy it now.) Spooky scary botnet. Gasp.

I would be interested to know if they have copied and pasted their descriptions from eBay in China. From what I can tell, the pictures can be stock photos, but pictures that appear to be taken in China can appear as well.

You may draw your own conclusions. Has anyone made a purchase like this?

Got my ThinkPad™ a few days ago but haven't had much of a chance to use it yet. Getting used to not bumping the TrackPoint™ while typing is hard too.

I bought the display and T520 separate.

It's an exact model wide gamut display (the superior glossy version with higher contrast than the matte version, too). I managed to hit the jackpot.

The T520 never came with a 1080p panel from factory, it's a panel harvested from a W520. And no it doesn't require adaptation, it's a drop in upgrade for the T520. I've done a fuckton of research about this purchase and have long since come to the conclusion that a T520* + B156HW01 is the cheapest possible way to get a laptop with a good quality 1080p display (unless I bought a shitty chromeshitbook). *T510 is cheaper but >lolnehalem.

I'm so excited bois.

as an x230 owner with the ips display the screen itself is great bar the resolution. It can be really limiting at times so i can somewhat understand.
>>
>>58716137
You just have to get used to the layout. I have the same issue. Once things get rolling, typing on them is great.

I think it's because I never get out of bed. Anything larger would feel too big. And when I use it on the table I just stick it into the dock with external monitor attached
>>
>>58716240
The resolution is absolutely terrible for working. Very poor (maybe 80-85%) gamut as well. The only thing the X2x0 IPS screen has going for it is the viewing angle, which is great. The glare on the X230 screen is at times distracting.
>>
>>58716209
I'll take a higher quality panel that has reflections in certain scenarios over the panel whose contrast ratio is permanently crippled by a disgusting permanent vaseline smear.

And you're right, the T520 did have a 1080p option. Don't know how I missed that.
>>
>>58716320
Actually the IPS panel for X220 covers approximately 67% of sRGB so yeah pretty mediocre.
>>
>>58716006
Yes and yes but they are more expensive.
Kinda like if they went the Z Book route.
>>
>>58716364
that's terrible
can it be improved with calibration?
>>
>>58716364
Depends on the ips panel there are a lot of aftermarket options around these days. Some perform abysmally and some actually perform better than whats factory in my experience.

how badly am I fucked, /tpg/? I just need this fucking laptop for college, it worked flawlessly until I started needing VMs. Is the x201s motherboard going to fit in the x201 chassis? Got it. Some quick google-fu found this; apparently the x201s boards can fit in the x201 chassis, but not the other way around, thanks to the larger fan.
>>
>>58716590
Sorry, I'm a poor as shit college student. $200 isn't in my budget, and this x201 is my baby.
>>
>>58716380
No you can't improve color gamut, it's a product of the backlight LED and their phosphors. All you can do is improve the color accuracy, find the optional brightness level to maximise contrast ratio and live with the poor color coverage.

>>58716390
notebookcheck have measured the LP125WH2-SLB1 and it indeed comes out to 67% sRGB.

There is a superior panel for the X220—the SLT1, which is an AH-IPS panel instead of the lame E-IPS used in the SLB1. It may have a greater color gamut than the SLB1. But I can't find any measurements for it anywhere so who knows.

I got an x220t off eBay, and the charging port is loose. I have to hold the charging cord a certain way or it doesn't work. What's the best way to fix this?
>>
>>58716694
Sounds like a chassis problem; you could order a replacement bottom chassis part, and that would probably fix the issue.
>>
>>58716712
Hmm, thanks for the info. One of the "tabs" that keeps the screen in place when flipped is loose too, I guess I'll have to open 'er up and inspect

Just bought a used ThinkPad, never had one before, what kind of shit should I check on it?

It has all the specs the seller said it would have, and the CPU is clocking up to the speed it should. The keyboard works, the battery holds charge, the touchpad and trackpoint work, the speakers work, screen works, theres no admin passwords on the BIOS, I've got my OS installed and posting from it right now and all seems well. Is there anything else I should check before I submit feedback? Just worried I'm missing something and will end up screwing myself.

CPU is an i7 and idles at around 35-40C, seems to sit at around 65-75C when I run a stress test program, thats fine right? Only thing I've noticed about it that seems a little off is that I'm having to use more pressure than I expected on the trackpad, but I think thats just because I'm used to nu-male laptops.

Make sure it can run Gentoo and support a high resolution lossless wallpaper of your waifu first.

The T42 is still a fine machine and the keyboard is much better than the new shitboards Lenovo uses. If you're not into gaymen it's a fine machine.

I hate to ask but /g/ how do you fix the static noice on t420. Do I really have to be forced to reinstall Windows in order to do a BIOS update?
>>

Thanks, I'm running arch with XFCE.
I just need Windows 7 to run some applications and printing.
So I thought of installing it to USB or External HDD and then run it from there.

How much does that cost usually?
Do I need specific one for the thinkpad model or any generic one will do?
Also what speed should I expect?

Like $5. Check ebay.

There's two heights that are common for the bays - iirc either 12.7mm or 9.5mm. As long as that matches you should be good.
>Also what speed should I expect?
Whatever your motherboard's sata port, or the hard drive bottleneck at.

Sadly I don't have the privilege.
I live in 3rd tier country, so I depends on whatever in the market so I check at /g/ and convert it to my currency.
>There's two heights that are common for the bays
So a 12.7 mm bay will support a 9.5 mm HDD?
>Whatever your motherboard's sata port, or the hard drive bottleneck at.
So much faster than USB 2.0.
Is it better to get an eSATA enclosure instead?
>>
>>58719281
>So a 12.7 mm bay will support a 9.5 mm HDD?
The slot itself in your laptop will be 9.5 or 12.7, you need to buy a caddy to match that size. Both should just a 2.5" drive just as well.

>Is it better to get an eSATA enclosure instead?
eSATA has the advantage of being more compatible and easily switched between computers. It can also be cheaper since you only need to buy the right cable for a 2.5". Make sure you get the right one - you either want esata, or esata plus depending on your thinkpad.

A caddy has the advantage of being more compact and convenient, and they're pretty useful anyway since any laptop you get with a DVD drive can take it if it's the right size.

What are some of the T420 accessories does /tpg/ recommends?
I'm thinking of getting http://a.co/3mDfwRC and install windows 7 on it.
That way I can have a separate windows drive, that can't see the GNU/Linux drive which is formatted in ext, and HDD caddy for extra storage.
>>
>>58719444
At that price just for 32GB you might just better off throwing it on another disk if you already have an SSD. Putting windows on a separate drive doesn't really offer much practical advantage.
>>
>>58719493
>Putting windows on a separate drive doesn't really offer much practical advantage.
For me it does.
That way I can set it to boot automatically from the mSATA SSD, unless I change the boot order.
It's handy when letting other people use your laptop.

buy another x201? you can get a decent x220 for $150
