I'm still pissed off about all the shit that was unnecessarily lost in the WCD purge. There's so much stuff that could easily have been stored safely away from a site that was liable to be destroyed over security issues at any moment.

Are any steps being taken to ensure this isn't repeated on the new music trackers? What about established #1 trackers in other niches such as PTP and BTN? I have a feeling one or both of those sites will crack at some point soon, and I don't want everything to go with them when that happens.

We know the torrents can easily be replaced, I'm not bothered about that, I mean the mountains of information stored on forums and facilitated through other features of the site (i.e. collages).

That's not what FLAC is.

Meaning if you put shit in you still get shit out. This has nothing to do with perfect or not analogue representation because on both sides it has to interface with AD and DA conversion.

Now to get to your original question. If your input signal is 24bit and you'd like to store it in 16bit format then your input will have to be rescaled in terms of dynamic range to 16bit precision prior to being compressed by FLAC. There are many ways of doing it but it always comes down to losing information that was there in the original signal. In theory however if original 24bit->16bit scaling was linear then it should be possible to recover a pretty close estimation of full 24bit DR using relatively simple interpolation.
