-Ebay is finished because hipsters started a business to sell to these threads

Only choice is dumpster diving which is the cool hip way to meet other losers. But it's worth it, to fit in on the internet

It was actually possible to have multiple monitors with PCs when you had a EGA and MDA card, programs that where designed to could write to MDA memory directly without disturbing the EGA output and so show to separate screens on both monitors. Obviously not as powerful as dual monitors on Mac or Amiga, but around the same time, they got dual monitor support in the late 80's when they first to the opportunity to run several graphics cards.

>>58672988
you patch the hole up and make a new one.
>>
>>58685218
>storage tube
You mean vector display
>>
>>58685367
they're both, storage tubes are a sub-class of vector displays that use longer-lasting phosphors to get out of having to use expensive memory
>>
>>58685367
it draws vectors, but it's not a regular CRT, it's a storage tube
the difference is the extreme persistence

with a regular raster or vector display, you need a computer that constantly redraws everything 50-60 times a second, it wasn't feasable back then to do that with complex images, as the cpu was either too slow to generate the picture, or there wasn't enough memory to store the picture in a framebuffer (like we use nowadays)

with a storage tube, the computer can draw the picture a line or dot at a time, pretty much as slow as it needs to, as already-drawn elements persist on the tube permanently (practically about an hour, else you risk burn-in)
>>
>>58685498
well to be autistic and nitpick a little it wasn't that we couldn't do it back then it was just that it was expensive to go with a memory-based solution and storage tubes were a way around that to drive costs down, there were a few high-end options that weren't storage tube based
>>
>>58685539
i did say "feasable", not "impossible"

I have three of these and I've never been able to actually do anything with them because there's no AC adapters out there for them

Same thing with my SLT/286

>>
>>58687078
>there's no AC adapters out there for them
so rig something up
you only need to;
- determine the voltage/amps required (probably labelled)
- determine the pinout (if it's a simple 2-pin plug, probably also labelled, else usually easy to figure out by looking at the board, for example, look out for a ground plane or diode they connect to)
- get/make a power supply with the same voltage and at least the required amps needed
>>
>>58687120
to add, it could be rigged up with just about any hobbyist bench supply. If you're into those things, you may as well take the leap into electronics study and repair. That's how I ended up in it anyway.

Found a Sony radio at the thrift store today.
Apparently produced in the 1970s from what I'm reading so far.
>>
>>58687120
>- determine the pinout
this is the biggest obstacle really, those early Compaq portables had weirdo custom plugs that are impossible to find something for

I mean if I could find a power supply and clear a good space to work with for it I could probably rig it up but I would of course prefer a more portable and usable solution, my work areas aren't really good places to actually use the stuff

there was some site somewhere that had information for the LTE pinout, nothing for the SLT/286 though which uses a 6-pin connector that's superficially similar to an RJ plug I guess, but not really

it's really retarded and I have tons of other stuff I'd probably dump the time and money on first I guess
>>
>>58688178
here's info for using the battery interface
https://marc.info/?l=classiccmp&m=118089067315076&w=2
i would imagine the existing battery is fucked anyway

that and apparently the psu is 18.3v (1.8 amps, which will be useful for picking a 12v supply), which is pretty weird, 12v supplies are much easier to get

this guy got other voltages from his;
>well, i got the multimeter and tested the voltage levels, whats odd is that some connections produnce .9 volts or 5/6 volts and a few produce 0 volts, witch leaves me to think that there some detection circutry on here

looks like it's talking about these pins here
>>
>>58688555
shit man you practically read my mind, sometimes I wondered if I could have a better time just trying to rig something up in the empty battery compartments

at those voltages I wonder if I could just rig up a newer compaq adapter to it, then I'd just have to figure out how to make the whole setup stick in place and not look like shit from an ass
>>
>>58688615
>figure out how to make the whole setup stick in place and not look like shit from an ass
i'd consider gutting a battery and just have a wire run out of that, or add a more common connector onto it somewhere if there's an accessible place to put one
this way you get a good connection to the laptops' battery terminals, and you don't need to do something like solder anything to the laptop itself

getting rid of old battery cells is a good idea in general anyway, plus you'll make the laptop a little lighter
>>
>>58677774
Yeah but we hooked our STs up to old TVs to save money
>>
>>58688651
my SLT came without a battery so it just has a big empty chasm in the middle, the problem I'm thinking of is more figuring out how the fuck I could keep the keyboard on top of it flush since detaching it would look pretty awful with that big gaping hole in the middle

the LTEs would probably be a different story though, there's probably a way to get those to work out, I think I still have an original battery somewhere too to get the electrical requirements from
>>
>>58670412
I unironically want an OS that 100% mimics this effect on modern LCD screens.
>>
>>58688809
just find a way to route a cable out of the machine with it all put back together
if you want to get fancy, you could consider drilling a hole on the back and installing a new power connector for the cable to be wired to
>>
>>58688821
as cool as it looks, it'll get old fast if you started using it regularly
>>
>>58688821
No you don't, those terminals were only a reasonable option because their users didn't spend more than 30-60 minutes on them at a time. Just find a terminal emulator that imitates the effect, something's gotta be out there.
>>
>>58688841
Why? It's not like I can't speed it up to whatever suits my fancy.

You didn't seriously think how fast it "draws" in an emulated system was actually a problem, did you?
>>
>>58672977
lel i thought that too
>>
>>58689073
the slow speed is pretty much half of the experience though

hell I'm pretty sure most modern terminal emulators already support tektronix graphics modes

Something got shitty with the keyboards after about 2008 or so.

X40s and other Pentium M boxes in general are still pretty modern really

What meme? Multiple monitors? They're not a meme. The retards who shill them that you're trying to poke at are though.

>>58702220
Dunno about consoles, if you work with old shit though CRTs are great to have, LCDs look like pure blurry ass at non-native resolutions and some graphics controllers suck shit at driving them.
>>
>>58702220
Depends on how old the console and how important the 'authentic' look is to you. Some older games were designed to take advantage of the way images were displayed using certain video signals. While an LCD would give you exact output of the original image, it might differ from what the developers intended the game to look like as viewed on the original display hardware of the time.

I don't really have much need for running old OS these days, and when I do a VM is sufficient enough. Not to mention I don't have space to be setting up additional machines, especially just for shits and giggles.

In all honesty I'm not even particularly keen on holding onto it anymore. It's been sitting in storage for damn near a decade and a half, and I've only kept it thus far because I couldn't be bothered to do anything about it yet and I felt it'd be a waste to just toss it.

I guess the better question is, is it worth anything? Any point trying to get it off my hands that doesn't involve a dumpster? It's a 486DX2 that was working when I stopped using it, and unless sitting for such a long time has somehow rendered it otherwise, should still work today (I guess the psu may be debatable by now).

Same question also applies to a couple other old systems (same situation, similar periods of time), a couple socket 5 pentium systems.

well, you asked what to do with it, of course nobody needs to run an old OS, but why don't you fuck with it anyway? you'll probably end up learning something you wouldn't give a shit about learning otherwise trying to get some use out of it, not like it's that big a system either, unless you're living in a studio apartment or something it shouldn't really be that hard to get it going especially if you have a KVM switch laying around

if you really want to get rid of it you're not going to be living the high life at an honest price, if I was desperate I'd give you $50 for it, DEC stuff is generally rare but in the end it's still old tech with a niche audience and overall pretty new by traditional antique/collecting standards

>>58711752
LaserDiscs are analog and predate CDs, so on CAV discs you can see the NTSC signal - big bars are vertical sync, and small lines are individual scanlines. (The pictured disk is labeled CLV because the CAV side just says "No program on this side", you can even see the message fade out after 5 minutes). CAV also means you can step frame by frame.

Should I try to collect old tech? or is it a pointless hipster hobby?

It's a interest that qualifies as a hobby, you wouldn't collect postmarks without knowing shit about them or caring about them.
