how to fix Arch's font config post infinality
I followed this gist
https://gist.github.com/cryzed/e002e7057435f02cc7894b9e748c5671 (embed)

and enabled
export FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=40

the fonts look better than the default state but still nowhere as good as the infinality fonts

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.

this (fixing the post infinality era) config files and cleaning up old symlinks and editing conf files has been the most extreme post update/upgrade I have done in arch in the last two years.
I honestly don't know why people still meme the shit out of it. All my updates are accumulated over a month or more, because I simply don't have time or energy for every day updates. However, it's still much better than reinstalling buntu based distros every 6 months.

>>
>>58638713

Capital letters are usually modifiers of the lower case function, and double presses are often the most common (usually line related) use also. Just experiment.

a -> A appends onto the end of the line from anywhere in it.

w and e become W and E, and jump by words separated by spaces rather than just anything that isn't a character. dE will delete a word like wrong["item"] or stupid_long-variable_name in one go.

f / t become F / T, and search backwards instead of forwards.

d is delete.
dw, delete to beginning of next word.
dt", delete up to (not including) the " char.
D is delete to the end of the line (basically d$)
dd is delete the line you're on.

c[movement] is change (delete and put in insert mode)
C is change rest of line (c$)
cc is change this line (like ddO)

etc.

Some commands become actually useful this way.

s is delete a single letter then enter insert mode (like pressing xi). No idea why you'd want that, I never use it.
S though substitutes the entire line which is actually useful. S is like pressing C but always from the first non-whitespace character.

The only one that doesn't fit the pattern is y. Idk why.
yy yanks a line as expected.
Y doesn't yank to the end of the line though. You gotta use y$ like a pleb.

>>58638994
I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Quick question, is it possible (or perhaps a better question would be, is it sensible) for a user to configure their computer so that, after being turned on, the graphical environment on TTY 7 isn't automatically started and instead, has to be activated by a command in order for the user to chvt and use it?

The reason I'm asking is because I do most of my work in the terminal and really don't need a graphical environment most of the time. So, if I disable it so that it's not running at all, I assume I would get slightly better performance, or at least better battery life from my laptop. Would this indeed be the case?

Also though, I do occasionally want to need to use a graphical environment and so, would there be a way to activate it through a command, making it available on TTY 7 and then when I no longer need it, a command which will allow me to kill it altogether until I request it again?
>>
>>58640617
I don't get your problem. If you don't want X to start at boot just disable your login manager. Then when you need it just switch tty and run startx.
>>
>>58640674
I'll look into that more but, since you're here, if I disabled the login manager at boot then that's essentially the same as not having X start at boot? Will it then just display TTY 1 after booting up? If that's the case, will running startx automatically run X on TTY 7, and all I'd have to do is chvt over to it? And if that's the case, would there be a way to disable X after I don't need at anymore without rebooting, placing me back on TTY 1? Sorry for all the back-to-back questions.

I want to give linux another go, but I reaaally don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling windows (especially since I don't have a key, since I got W10 from the free upgrade)

Is there something that will let me clone my C:\ drive somewhere, so I can install linux and do whatever and not worry about it, and if I don't like it and change my mind I can just plop an image back onto the drive?
>>
>>58641888
Why not just dual boot?

You have both OS's on the same machine and get to select which one you want to boot when you turn the machine on.
If you decide you don't like Linux you can just wipe it and give all the free space back to Windows, or vice versa.
>>
>>58641957
Too low on storage, I've only got a 120gb SSD and most of it is taken up by windows and development bullshit + userdata from misc programs that I can't get rid of because I still use them
>>
>>58641988
Just search for drive imaging. Like:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DriveImaging

The really important things to remember is that you can't do the copy/restore process while you're actually using the drive at all. So that means you'd probably have to start by burning a liveCD so you can run your machine off the CD without your harddrive being used, then you can image the disk.
and also it's important that the filesystem used on the medium you're storing the backup on allows single files to be 120gb or more (since the entire disk will be backed up to a single file)

I'm somewhat new to linux. I like debians stability and free philosophy, but I also love arch's rolling release and up to date packages. That said I'm a bit too retarded for arch. Is debian unstable good or similar to arch?
>>
>>58642530
Debian's stability comes from their main bread and butter stable version. Debian Sid is more on the bleeding edge and will fuck you up if you carelessly upgrade and don't read what apt is doing.

>>58642530
you're not too retarded for arch, just use architect to install it and refer to the archwiki when you have an issue. also a brotip: when seeking help through the forums do not mention you used an installer instead of doing it manually
also pick the lts kernel and don't just blindly update whenever updates are available, that's how shit gets broken

/fglt/ masters,

I need to backup some data and need to encrypt it and burn it onto a BluRay drive.

I used to use Mac a lot and they have encrypted DMG images (they're like encrypted ISOs that you mount like regular partitions for example).

I need something that works on Linux (and possibly other OSes) that accomplishes the same thing. I have around 12-15GB of data that I need encrypted & burned onto a BluRay disc.

How do you go about creating an encrypted "image" so I can burn it onto a BluRay disc?

As a bonus question, what software is the best for burning BluRay? I run GNOME as my DE if it matters...

Thanks so much!

>>
>>58643347
the closest thing to DMGs is probably squashfs
mountable, read-only filesystem image with compression support
doesn't support encryption, but you could put it on top of an encryption layer
>>

interesting. thanks for responding!

>>58643455

>>
>>58643465
>>58643455
oh, as far as i do understand, LUKS (the standard on linux for disk encryption) works like other dm stuff, in that creates a new block device on which you place your unencrypted filesystem and files

so i suppose you could;
1. make a bluray-sized disk image file
2. set it up for LUKS and mount it
3. create your squashfs image onto that mount, out of the files you're backing up
4. unmount it and burn it to the bluray
then you'd end up a random-accessible, mountable, encrypted disc

speaking of cool filesystem layering stuff, ever messed with overlayfs?

you've likely technically used it before, most livecd's use it

it lets you combine a read-only filesystem with a writable folder, to create a writable filesystem with the contents of both

i use this for bigger games, i store them in a compressed, read-only squashfs file, and mount them along with overlayfs so i can run them without needing to extract them completely

heh, wondering if someone bothered to check out what i put on it

create a 16M file;
dd if=/dev/zero of=image.bin bs=1M count=16

attach it to a loop device (/dev/loop0 by default);
losetup -f image.bin

turn it into a LUKS encrypted device;
cryptsetup luksFormat /dev/loop0

"open" the LUKS device (attaches to /dev/mapper/c1);
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/loop0 c1

create a squashfs image to put on it;
mksquashfs . ../virt.squashfs -comp xz

write that to the LUKS device (could also write to it directly from mksquashfs as well);
dd if=virt.squashfs of=/dev/mapper/c1 bs=4k

close the LUKS device;
cryptsetup close /dev/mapper/c1

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

idk about that because I've pretty much only used systemd since it became standard. (I've had arch for a few years) do you want gentoo just for openrc or do you like portage? other distros like arch can be changed to support openrc later.

I really want a distro that can repair itself with a LIVECD if I am in trouble, or have limited time to fucko. I've used arch before but I didn't like it since "doesn't werk out of box" and need to install and download shit.
Portage is good, the idea and practice, but the compiling heat/CPU load is bit scary if you've ever seen it.
OpenRC is good, but I want it as default rather having to install something else then changing back to it.
It would be really fucking Good if Devuan picks up

Bash can do c-style loops (I guess you were using seq because brace expansions don't work with variables, right?). My take:

for((i=1;i<=9;i++)); do for((j=1;j<=i;j++)); do printf '%dx%d=%d\t' $i $j $((i*j)); done; echo; done

I know Debian perfectly.
Should I, use Debian again?
Go for free bsd or other?
Try arch or cent os ?

Debian is good, if you can work with it,then keep using it.

do you have any reason to switch to one of them? If you are curios you can try, nothing wrong with that.

>Is butterFS just a meme or a nice stuff?
It's definitely not a meme, but personally I'm waiting it get tested more (i.e. distro starts adopting it as their default FS) before switching. Also not every feature in complete yet:

I had the same. For some reason I could only write when my hd's are NTFS formatted.

Only my root and home partitions are ext4 and writeable that way. All my other disks are ntfs.

Why is this so hard, why can't I just select read & write from the option menu

Why is the option menu even there if I can't do it

well they are small number for sure. You are not loading much stuff at startup I suppose or have a really fast ssd.
Anyway the last command I wrote is wrong, the "plot" option outputs a svg file not png.

WHy are you using ext2? It's most likely not related to your problem, but why would you use it?
You obviously have not enough knowledge to warrant the use of a non-mainstream or standard filesystem, but you still insist on it.
>>
>>58646730
Can you tell me what to format it to then.

I used ext2 in the other drive to rule out the possibility of something missing since the OS is installed as ext2 (automatic option made by the installer which I did not even touch or change)
>>
>>58646713
Is it an external drive? some ext adapters have a hardware switch for a read-only mode.
If you use udiskctl try to use it to mount that drive:
udisksctl mount -b /dev/sdc1

(unmount it before that obviously)
>>
>>58646760
Not external.
>>
>>58646749

Use ext4 like any sane person living in 2017.
>>
>>58646749
ext2 is very old and superseded by ext4. Is it an old installation?
>>
>>58646749
>>58646778

Also, which distribution is that?
>>
>>58646779
?

http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.10/

It was quite literally this and I didn't change anything myself and let the installer do it.

It installed the operating system as ext2
>>
>>58646789

i seriously doubt Ubuntu chose ext2 for you. Scrape it again, install from scratch and this time don't do anything which will fuck you up.
>>
Thread: >>58646801
>>
>>58646802
while I do find it strange that the installer would choose ext2, it's not necessary to reinstall the system:
http://www.ghacks.net/2010/08/11/convert-ext23-to-ext4/

Anyway, I don't think running ext2 is all that big issue.
>>

never seen that before, and most stuff i've found is just actual cases of running out of vram
