It doesn't do everything, you utter retard. It doesn't browse the web, it doesn't edit videos, it doesn't view images, it doesn't encode audio or video. It's a set of seperated system management utilities developed under the same roof.

Kill yourself for being a retard who can't inform himself, but instead jumps on to every tiny bit of edgy and controversial sounding information and adopts it as his opinion just to masquerade your actual incompetence.

Recently I've started working with some lab equipment featuring a TI c6454 DSP

I went to the manufacturer, but safe to say while they are best in the world when it comes to high precision lab equipment they are not computer savvy. At the training we used code composer studio on windows, but I'd like to just do everything with make from emacson gnu + linux without that code composer studio shit.

Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

>>
>>58631781
update-grub is a script delivered with ubuntu, not part of grub.
You should install os-prober, so that grub can autodetect any install system, then run:
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

NOTE: since you probably installed grub in the other distro's pratition, you must set the correct path to grub conf file.

It's fine, just remember that now grub will be installed in arch's partition unless you are using a separate /boot partition for the bootloader

for some reason that software use an environment variable (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environment_variable) to set its download folder.

To set an evn variable globally (i.e. for any user) add this line in the file /etc/environment:
export VARIABLE=value
so in your case:
export GPODDER_DOWNLOAD_DIR=/path/to/ext/disk/folder

If you want to set an env only for one user, then add the previous line to the file ".pam_environment" (mind the dot) in his home

It's all taken care of already. You might only want to install microcode updates for your Intel CPU if you want. Look under "additional drivers" in Ubuntu's software settings. You will also find GPU drivers there and you should be able to choose between free or proprietary drivers there as long as you have an Nvidia or AMD GPU.

You used nano, which is a text editor. Look up how to save files with it on the internet or just look at your screen, because it tells you how to use it. Alternatively stop using Nano to edit files and use a graphical text editor. Ubuntu should come with one, most likely Gedit or something.

I think the speaker has made one wrong assumption right at the beginning.

He used google trends to present the declining interest of phrases like linux, open source, etc.
But how exactly does Google trends present data?

The highest point in the y axis is the place where the term was "searched most frequently" but I seriously doubt this compares only the raw number of hits.
Since 2012 Linux has become a lot more accessible to the average, tech-clueless user (ubuntu was actually released in 2004) so it's safe to assume that a lot more people use it in 2016/2017 compared to 2004.

Google shows Microsoft Windows on a steady decline since 2004 despite Microsoft still having more or less the same market share among desktop users as it did 12 years ago.

The only thing that google tells you over such a long timespan is how the internet as a whole changed.
There's a lot more content to seach for so phrases like on the pic get "drowned" in the noise of everything else.

>What the fuck.

That is still better than being forced to update your BIOS with a fucking floppy.

But I do see how it could create problems for users of full disk encryption, or people who don't use NTFS/FAT partitions at all. I assume in this case there is an alternative method to update it.

A lot of recent mobos have tools to flash your BIOS from windows. Which is pretty handy... and dangerous. A corrupt/partial flash from a BSOD or stupid user killing the utility mid write will permanently brick the board(unless you have SPI tools and know voodoo).

I suspect modern BIOS chips from competent company's have twice the required capacity. The new BIOS is written to the empty/redundant half until a matching checksum is verified and at least one successful boot has taken place. I have no idea if they actually do that, it's just how I would go about the whole ordeal if I designed it.

Shit some of those new fancy ass UEFI BIOS's have full network stacks build in, can probably download&flash the update by pressing F9 at boot.

FYI BIOS viruses are a thing, a stealthy terrible thing. All this UEFI shit will lead to malicious code that affects all standardized UEFI devices vs one manufacturer.

A traditional BIOS virus might write a very small payload to your hard drive, or a critical memory address during boot then wait until something executes it. It might download larger tools into RAM, sniffing your drives for valuable data while displaying a fake windows loading screen. There are probably a few out there that can spread over LAN via PXE shenanigans.

UEFI adds a few great security features, but giving manufactures low level remote access capability is a recipe for corporate sponsored spyware. Hell UEFI provides runtime services that continue to operate after the OS is loaded. Exploits that bypass secure boot/firmware signatures have already been documented.

I haven't read the manual in a while, so I don't know which are the best. I used to have nnedi several months ago.

###Video###
profile=opengl-hq
scale=ewa_lanczossharp
cscale=ewa_lanczossoft
framedrop=vo
# framedrop=vo
# Drop late frames on video output (default). This still decodes and filters all
# frames, but doesn't render them on the VO. It tries to query the display FPS
# (X11 only, not correct on multi-monitor systems), or assumes infinite display
# FPS if that fails. Drops are indicated in the terminal status line as Dropped:
# field. If the decoder is too slow, in theory all frames would have to be
# dropped (because all frames are too late) - to avoid this, frame dropping
# stops if the effective framerate is below 10 FPS.
hwdec=no

###Subtitles###

sub-gauss=.4
# Apply Gaussian blur to image subtitles (default: 0). This can help to make
# pixelated DVD/Vobsubs look nicer. A value other than 0 also switches to
# software subtitle scaling. Might be slow.

sub-gray
# Convert image subtitles to grayscale. Can help to make yellow DVD/Vobsubs look
# nicer.
