Kaby Lake has been released! Skylake is depreciated if corresponding chips are similarly priced (e.g., i5 7600K vs i5 6600K)!
>Some motherboards will have a one-click, 5GHz on air OC button that works for 80% of i5 7600Ks
>100 series chipsets (Z170, B150, ect) don't work out of the box with Kaby Lake
>Z series chipsets have an "Enhanced Turbo" under XMP, which allows all cores to run at the highest single core boost clockspeed (works for Skylake CPUs as well)
>Pentiums now have hyperthreading, and are thus the new default budget / entry level gaming CPUs
>Pentium G4560 is the best price / perf four thread CPU on a modern platform
>All Kaby Lake CPUs work natively with 2400MHz DDR4 memory
>Do not underestimate the impact of fast (>2400, e.g, 3000MHz) RAM in conjunction with a Z series chipset, which often provides as much of a performance boost as a CPU overclock

You could probably spend less on the mobo but otherwise looks good

I have a 980 ti, but I plan on given it up to a friend. Should I get the gtx 1080 or wait for Vega?
>>
>>58613631
Wait for vega or wait til the 1080 ti releases.
>>
>>58613631
Vega will likely have a similar perf as the 1080, but the 1080Ti will likely be released in a couple months. You could get the EVGA 1080 and use the step up program to get the 1080Ti if you play your cards right. You better have at least a 1440p monitor though
>>
>>58613653
I probably plan on doing this. Does EVGA actually honor this plan and how does it work exactly?
>>
>>58613830
Check their website, but basically if a better card come out within three months of your purchase of the current champ, you can upgrade for the cost difference or something

Gaming build, budget of $2750, going for 1440p/144Hz. The first two things I'll upgrade are SSD and GPU, other than that I'm hoping it'll last a while. I'm in US btw. The sound card, I want because audiophile. My questions are:
How long will this last? (-GPU&SSD)
How can I improve it?
Am I wasting money on meme parts?
Is the sound card + headset not good with sound quality? I have Shure earphones but want overear headphones for gaming, so I'm looking for good headset, I'll raise total budget to $3,000 for better sound.
>>
>>58614162
Didn't mean to reply to >>58614110
iust wanted to post. whoops
>>
>>58614162

>how long will it last
likely longer than you need it for

>how can i improve it
remove the fan controller, because those can hook to the motherboard. and someone is going to tell you that those fans are crap (even though i think they're awesome too). and with that big case you don't really need a liquid cooler unless you want one to clean up the inside, a metal heatsink with fans can do the job. But the Pro5 can hold 6 fans if you remove all bays. 3 in the front, 2 on top, and 1 in the back. But if you put 3 in the front then you lose access to both of your 5.25" slots, so just something to keep in mind.

But realistically it looks pretty good. Expensive, but everything is good quality.
>>
>>58614162
>How long will this last?
Hard to say w/o being able to tell the future
>How can I improve it?
By doing more research on the audio aspect.
>Am I wasting money on meme parts?
Yes. The cooler, the fan controller, the sound card and the headset.
>Cooler
There are better coolers for cheaper, even if you want to stick w/ AIO. I'll make a part list for you in a lil bit that should be better.
>Fan controller
waste of money
>Sound card and headset
The mobo can power 600 Ohm headphones and has decent enough signal to not really need a DAC, so sound card is a waste. The headset is a meme gaymer headset. Go ask questions in a /hpg/ (headphones general) thread on here. They'll help you find something good for the money.
>>
>>58614162
And ofc, the fans are meme gaymer rgb but I understand people's subjective taste in aesthetics so it's up to you.

Are those GPU temps normal at idle? It's the first time I get a multi GPU build and I have no idea if it's within the norms
>>
>>58614378
Yeah, I'd say they're normal.
>>
>>58614330

why do you hate RGB so much?
>>
>>58614378
>CF 290s
>1080p
m8. Sell them, buy a GTX1070 and a 1440p monitor
>>
>>58614420
Because I liked RGBs when I was 15 and I hate my 15-year-old self, tbqh. But other than that, it's not RGB that I hate, it's the fact that people focus more on pretty colors than performance. Same reason people hate faggots who put spoilers and shiny rims on their cars.
>>
>>58614454
It's a temporary monitor.
>>
>>58614456

>spoilers and shiny rims on cars

i can see that. but it's more like different brands of air filters or exhaust rather spoilers or shiny rims. you'll get a lot of air coming through a K/N filter, but that's because the mesh is a bit looser so you'll also get a lot of particulates, but they look cool so everyone buys them. same with flowmasters, they have awful flow but they sound cool so even though you're not getting the max amount of power that you could with a more effective catback, you're still getting the sensation.

RGB fans still do the job, still spin, still pump air, but they might be a bit louder and more ostentatious, but sometimes a person has got to learn a lesson for themselves.
>>
>>58614506
That's why I said "I understand people's subjective taste in aesthetics," personally, I'd go with some Noctua industrial fans cause muh CFM, but again, that's up to you, and it isn't even a major part of the build, so don't worry about it. Go check out /hpg/ threads, like I said. That'll do more for you than arguing with me about RGBs.
>>
>>58614536

i'm not headphones guy, just someone else that got assblasted because of subjective matters. but i see where you're coming from.

Trying to lower price and optimize for 1080p at 60hz yet make it upgradeble to 1440p by adding a second card, also thinking of getting 16gb of ram

Should I switch the 1070 for a 480 8gb?

>>

>>

obv i could upgrade the GFX but it still is going strong with what im doing (just playing games and photoshop at most)
>>
>>58614605
>>58614624
You could get another processor, don't know if it'd be worth it. More ram wouldn't hurt. Maybe a newer GPU.
>>
>>58614607
It's already good enough for 1440p, dude.
Here's an improved list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/b48bcc
Changed the GPU to nearly identical one that looks better and already has an OC on it. Got cheaper storage, added 16GB RAM. Cheaper price, better performance.
>>
>>58614677
I know, Im just trying to make it more a 1080 machine that COULD be upgraded to 1440 If I wanted to.

I had to reduce my budget since Im quitting my part time job soon
>>
>>58614674
the cpu atm is going strong with a 4,2 oc the gpu if i oc it with that factory oc on top of that it crashes. so thought about getting a 1080 on the summer sale... and ddr3 ram i can find that on the cheap so no problem there. tho since im not that fond of Intels pricing to performance coming to CPU's, do you recommend getting one of the zen one's when they are purchasable or am i having high hopes of low prices
>>
>>58614721
Just upgrade the GPU and RAM, CPU should be fine if you're happy with it. Once Zen comes out, the prices for Skylake will probably fall, so wait and see.
>>
>>58614700
Do you want it even cheaper? If so, by how much?
>>
>>58614721
Wouldn't a 1080 bottleneck on that build? >>58614605
>>
>>58614766
most likely thats why i think of maybe getting a zen cpu. depends on how they price them if it really is not in my range i might just get a 1070 or something from amd
>>
>>58614750
Under 1000 if possible, hence why Im looking into a 480
>>
>>58614766
Probably will, but it doesn't hurt to have an OP GPU if he's planning to upgrade his CPU later on, which he says he is.
>>
>>58614786
Do you really need that ODD? Also, a cheaper case might help. You can also go with 1x8GB RAM right now and add another one when you have more money.
>>
>>58614812
this was meant for >>58614786
>>
>>58614700
That's stupid though, a single card can power 1440p 60hz for a good price, and SLI is fucking retarded
I never understood all these new builders getting a halfassed card (or a new one) and planning to "get another to upgrade down the line". It doesn't scale like that, 90% of games literally won't even use the second card, and more often than not it ends up being more expensive than if you'd sold when you upgrade or just have gotten a good card in the first place

>>

that is irrelevant. it's literally $1 more than the 2133mhz equivalent, and you can "utilize" the remaining 267mhz if you get a new mobo sometime in the future.

>>58614889
But a b150 doesn't leave much room to upgrade from a 6500, by the time the CPU will need replacing there will probably be a new specific standard of ddr4. In the meantime he can try and save $10 by getting the cheapest stock 2133mhz oem ram he can find
He's trying to budget

Or just stick with Z170, don't force yourself to join the botnet.
>>
>>58615058
2x4GB ram costs exactly $1 more, and you get dual channel
Sounds a lot better than $2 more, and you get "futureproofing" but no benefits
>>
>>58615085
Cause he wants to get 16GB eventually, and it's simpler (for the user and the pc) to run 2x8 in dual channel than 4x4 in dual channel, since skylake doesnt support quad channel
>>
>>58615107
But it's not simpler it's the exact same difficulty to push in 2 extra sticks to upgrade than to push in 1 extra stick
This isn't an argument, having dual channel right now and forever is.
>>
>>58615107
>it's much simpler for both the user and the PC to use 2 sticks instead of 4
>OH GOD IM RETARDED HOW TO RAM
Also the PC must be retarded and not know how to ram as well
>>
>>58615132
Pushing 2 extra sticks = higher % risk (however small) of something breaking. Also, more physical components means there are more components that can fail. So you pay a bit more for an unnoticeable (to the human) improvement in performance but also a higher risk of component failure.

Hey guys,

So, after years of running my FX 8350 on stock, I've decided to OC it with the purchase of a new case and a Noctua NH-D15. Temps are fine and rarely go above 50c.

Now, my board is a pizza shit. It's a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P with only a 4+1 phase connector for the chip. Is this a problem for the VRM when overclocking on higher voltages? trying to go above 0.200v at reasonable temps on load, my chip downclocks and the multiplier goes to x7 from x20 even though the cores, socket, or any readout temps have reached the thermal limit. Also all throttling BIOS features have been disabled.

Would I be able to get a cheap 990x ASRock board off eBay and be able to achieve a higher clock?

For an affordable compromise, you can get SIPS/PLA panels at 75+ hz. If you've never seen it, 75Hz is enough for stuff to look "too smooth" of a framerate, and although some screens don't advertise it, they can overclock. I had a first-gen dumpster 1440p that only overclocked to 67Hz, but my buddies $170 SIPS ebay monitor could get 75Hz on HDMI.

They do ghost at higher framerates, easily, but since it's not doing 3d or anything it's not noticeable. 1440p 75FPS is much better than a 120/144hz 3d TNshit, and won't ruin your bank account like the power and cost of a system and monitor capable of running at 4k would be.
>>
>>58617787
generally working is settling for worse, never settle(Fuck isn't this applel slogan or something)
My monitor has USB hub and I was wondering if maybe it doesn't carry through DP because of the cable(or again, the monitor isn't perfect, it was a fairly cheap one, maybe it's the monitors fault), because I've read that DP carries USB signal

You want a good quality PSU(preferably one manufactured by Seasonic or superflower, although some other manufacturers make good units as well - do note that manufacturere !=the brand on the box), the rating is secondary(although PSUs with better rating are more likely to be good otherwise as well). I wouldn't get a PSU that doesn't have 80+ bronze or better, though, and for the price(a good 80+ gold isn't much more expensive than a good 80+ bronze with similar wattage, these days) you might as well consider getting a gold rated unless you're on a really tight budget.

Literally nothing to do with Intel and AMD and everything to do with Microsoft. Microsoft doesn't want you to use x CPU with their OS, they just don't include the support for it in the kernel and Intel and AMD can complain all they want but it won't change anything.

>>58615731
All it means is that Microsoft isn't updating the kernel on 7 and 8 to support those processors. Nothing to do with the CPUs themselves.

Eh... I don't see much point in getting non-K version of an i7. The price difference isn't very much considering what you're already paying, and you lose the option to overclock down the line. And if you want the best value for money, for gaming you'll stick with an i5 anyway.

>>
>>58622087
If you're getting non-K i5, just go with the 6500. Price difference between 66 and 65 isn't worth it
>>
>>58622087
Well... you pay premium for a 6600k(not to mention needing to buy a cooler and paying extra for the motherboard if you actually plan to OC), but you should be able to easily OC it to around 4.5 GHz(higher than that, if you get lucky with silicon lottery and have a good motherboard) compared to 3.3GHz stock the 6600 has. So that's around 35% faster, making it rather good value. That extra speed isn't really necessary right now(unless you plan to use 120Hz screen or something), but at the current pace of advancement in CPUs it'll mean you won't have to worry about upgrading your CPU until your motherboard breaks. An OC'd 2500k is still pretty good for gaming, but a regular 2500 is already slower than a new 6100.
>>
>>58622257

>price difference
>price difference

You're getting an objectively better piece of material. There is a lot of difference between a 6500 and and 6600K even before you overclock.

But I mention i5-K or stock i7 because there are games that can take and advantage of hyperthreading or a solid overclock. But if you get a stock i7 you can save money on a stock CPU cooler or an H170 motherboard.

There is a big difference. There's enough of a difference to always go after the K

Because if you're going to go after the 6600, might as well go for the 6500, but then you might as well just get a 4690K, but then the 4690 is cheaper, so why not just get a 4670? Yes instead of the 6600K i should get a 4670 because you willingly allowed the slippery slope to happen.

Will I be able to perform a PCI-Pasthrough with this ?

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/br4ZGf

The GPU and CPU are supporting Visualization as well as iommu and the CPU is equipped with integrated graphics. The only requirement left is iommu and uefi support on the motherboard. I can't seem to find info on the board. Can anybody help ?

Whatever you say, faggo
>>
>>58623008
You can use pretty much any graphics card in a passthrough mode provided that the drivers for the card is installed with the Hypervisor rather than after the virtual machine is created.
The GPU virtualization support is in regards to splitting or sharing GPU resources with virtual machines from the host, which is only supported by a certain range of AMD FirePro S-Series cards with MxGPU hardware virtualization and all Nvidia Quadro cards.
>>
>>58623062

?
>>

So it should pretty much work in regards to the GPU since I'm planning on using the integrated CPU graphics for my Linux Host and dedicate the GPU solely to the Windows guest.

What about the mobo ? It's hard to find info on it.
>>
>>58623102

!
>>
>>58623106
>I'm planning on using the integrated CPU graphics for my Linux Host
That's not how it works. Most Hypervisors don't even use the integrated graphics, but rely on software-based graphics virtualization.

>>58623172
If you're talking about using an iGPU, then a PCI passthrough is impossible. You're trying to use an RX 480, which will work in a PCI passthrough, and the iGPU which won't by default. The VMs not using the 480 will be using software virtualization for the graphics output.
>>
>>58623226

The iGPU will be used for the host. The RX480 will be passed through to the guest.
>>
>>58618429
Eh not really
>>
>>58623242

What do you guys think of this?
Purpose/goal: 1440p/60hz gaming with modest overclocking and low temps/noise.
Budget: None set, but around $1300 Ideally

I really like the Zotac AMP! card, but it's really tough to fit, aesthetically, into most builds with windows. I decided that instead of avoiding the cheesy look of the card, I would embrace it and spend a little bit of money turning the build into kind of an aerospace/military aesthetic. I really don't know what case I should be using for this, but definitely want an atx mid. S340, which I normally love, will kind of subdue the cheesy look that this build is going for.

>>
>>58623287
just because nvidia gimps their lower GB model, doesn't mean that 6gb model is only "a little" bit better than 470
>>
So how much of a difference does hyperthreading make? Would it be worth it to go from an i5 3570k to a i3 7300 or 7100? I want to get a portable mATX build instead of my bigass full sized rig and replace my HD7850 with a RX470 or 480 but I'm on a tight budget.

I'm not concerned about the gaming performance but things like video editing, am I going to notice going from 4 to 2 cores?
>>
>>58623373
Doesn't mean 1050ti is "around the same" as 470, either. The 1050ti is shit, and the only reason to get it is if you have shitty PSU or otherwise can't get a decent GPU.
>>
>>58623452
If you are in the market for a 1050ti, I don't see why you wouldn't just hunt down a craigslist/ ebay/ anywhere used gtx 960 for presumably cheaper. The only exception being for upgrading prebuilt OEM office grade computers.
>>
>>58623381
Hyperthreading is about 30% performance increase per cycle compared to 100% from doubling the number of cores(assuming tasks that scale to the desired number of threads, obviously). If the 3570k is at stock, a 7300 ought to perform about the same or maybe a little worse, but overclocked 3570k would be significantly better than a 7300.
>>
I'm planning to do an itx build with i5-7400 and gtx 1060 6gb, is there a board with b250 chip that's in itx format?
>>
>>58623512
This. Games are making good use of at least 4 cores now. Beyond? Questionable except in a few titles. But most games want 4 physical cores at a good clock speed.
For professional work, the physical cores are even more important. Video encoding is pretty parallelized. I wouldn't swap unless you are going from i5 -> new -i5.
>>
>>58623722
not that I see, but pcpartpicker is listing two h270 boards, one from asrock and one from gigabyte.
I wouldn't recommend using the 7400. The 7500 gives a 400mhz base clock increase for a measly $10 more.
>>
>>58623755
>But most games want 4 physical cores at a good clock speed.
Eh...MOST games still run just fine on 2 cores with SMT. You're completely right about professional work, though.
>>
>>58623794

I'm in Eastern Yurop, price difference is actually quite significant between 7400 and 7500.
>>
>>58623817
how different? Also what price is the 6500? The 6500 runs 200mhz faster than the 7400 at about the same IPC and 100mhz more turbo clock. 6400 > 7400 > 6500 > 7500
>>

what about the price difference in motherboards? There's TONS of itx skylake boards out. I'm only seeing a handfull of itx kaby lake boards, and they are pricey. Granted, this is US pricing I'm looking at. You may save 20 bucks or so on the cpu but spend that same 20 bucks or more buying a more expensive mobo.
If you've already worked out what the best deal for you is, disregard everything I've posted thus far.

Consider the NH-U14S or the NH-D15 over the NH-D14. The case choice is okay, but it hasn't aged well and there's more modern choices that are cheaper. There's really no reason to go for a full tower with modern hardware unless you're doing something crazy with watercooling.
>>
>>58624003
Out of the box, no, the bios usually won't be updated. You can get a physical retail store to do it for you though. They may charge if you aren't purchasing the cpu and/or motherboard from them.
>>

>>58624072
Any particular reason for the 6800k? Lots of video editing? If you are gaming, I imagine an aggressively overclocked 7700k will give better performance than a 6800k. Most games (battlefield 1 being an excpetion) prefer clock speed and IPC to core count. Seems you aren't using many features of the x99 platform like extra PCIE lanes, etc.
>>
>>58624025
ask a local parts store, or craigslist to let you use the kaby for a minute as you flash it
