IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is it possible to make it through a uni course in computer science with nothing but an X220?
>>
>>58606665
I'm doing it right now.
X220 + Debian testing stretch.
As long as you don't have any "Art" related classes as in animation or UI design where you may want to grab a slightly beefier machine with some sort of dGPU, you'll be 100% fine.
>>
>>58606698
Literally none, though I am thinking of taking Computer Network Engineering instead of comp sci
>>
>>58606732
Definitely doable.
The X220's hardware is plenty for any programming related tasks, and the 9 cell battery can easily last for 8 hours, which is very nice since at my uni all the plug sockets are constantly occupied by idiots with their 17'' gaymen laptops.

How hot do thinkpads run? I want to get a x220 or a t420 or a w520 for school but I need it to be quiet, cool, and have a long battery. Naturally, I'll get the extended battery for either machine, but I'm more concerned about how powerful they are. My main work is compiling C/Java/Verilog. It's also gonna be a shitpost and weebtoon machine.
>>
>>58606910
Eh, depends on the CPU inside. Most x220s are i5 duo. 120 is ok for a new x220. Are you planning on upgrading?

currently my x220's i7 2640m is idling @ 42c

Are any thinkpads comparable to the newer Dells? I was looking at an XPS 13 or the 2-in-1 inspiron 13, both have 128-256gb SSDs and 4-8 gb of ram with a 6200 i5 for around $500.

Are there any thinkpads in this range that could give better performance or battery life?
>>
>>58607825
Depends on what you want. I personally prefer the x230 as i prefer laptops of that size. If you don't give a shit about the size of the laptop then go for that T430. Normally i'd recommend an x230 over a t430 any day if the t430 had that horrific 1366x768 display (even though its the same resolution as the x230 its actually a lot worse) but in your case its up to you
>>
>>58607864
which trackpad would you say is superior? I know I won't get a macbook tier trackpad but still would like to know which one would be ergonomically sufficient than the other

Also, is there a battery life discrepancy?
Thanks for answering btw
>>
>>58607898
I wouldn't have a clue desu the x230 one seems okay but i never use it. Always use the trackpoint.
>>
>>58607060
if you want it to be quiet cool and have a long battery an x230 will be a better choice. TRUST ME the fan is much more quieter than on the x220 and its virtually in audible in nearly all typical use cases. Even when running prime95 on my machine its audible but it isnt loud and the system won't even top 80c. If you are so anal about the keyboard put an x220 one on it.
>>
>>58607821
t430s will have a beefier igpu, which will be better for "lighter" 3d games. probably not a huge improvement for 2d stuff. has a thunderport and usb 3 if that tickles your bits

t420 cpu can be upgraded, for what that's worth. replacement parts are stupid easy to find. keyboard layout is better

it may look like the t430s wins out, but both can do the job you want. the huge deal breaker here is panel resolution. don't buy either if they don't have a 1600x900 panel, full stop.

with the resolution and want for newer ports aside, i'd get whatever is cheapest. it's still just an older, used laptop at the end of the day
>>

I read the buyers guide but I'm a complete pleb and none of the numbers really mean anything to me.

I'm currently making do with a Lenovo Z575 (not mine, have to give it back, hence wanting a laptop) and want a 15"-ish Thinkpad. How much do I have to spend to get a used/refurb Thinkpad that has a processor as good/a little better than 'my' Z575?

Also am I right in thinking that Thinkpad's use the same keyboard as other Lenovo keyboards?

Just won an auction for an X220t w/ "i5 2.5Ghz 2GB RAM 320GB HDD". No battery, no power supply, and no mention of stylus. Bottom right corner is cracked/chipped on palm rest side and there are some case scratches.

Honestly, no info on if it turns on, works, etc. Just physical descriptions. But as it wasn't mentioned, I figure I can get a refund if it doesn't work out.

Anyway, paid $70. Good deal or did I fuck up?
>>
>>58609786
Going from experience with my T410, the GPU is shit, and I found with 256MB memory it was more of an inconvenience than anything else. It might be better since that should be 512MB though. The exact implementation of the graphics varies a bit too in regards to whether it's switchable, depending on when it was made.

I also have issues with the CPU (i5-560m) on my T410 overheating. Maybe the cooling on the T510 is better, but that i7 is probably going to shit out even more heat.

It's still not too bad a buy at the current price, but I doubt it still will be when the auction ends. The main thing going for it in my eyes is just the screen, otherwise a later model will give a fair improvement in performance all round, be less bulky, and have other small nuances like GPT support.
>>
>>58610262
The GPU is shit in what sense? I already have a desktop for gaymen.

I'm pretty much only ever going to use it as a word processor and for watching Youtube videos. As such the SSD and 1080p display were what caught my eye.

Finding a T520 with an SSD and 1080p display is proving to be quite difficult, eBay's filtering system is shit. I realise I could just change them out myself later but I'm trying to keep the cost down.
>>
>>58610374
It is shit in the sense that it is a GPU which is not good.
>>
>>58610452
GPU which is not good because of what factors?
>>
>>58610486

>>

>>
>>58610547
hmmmmmmmmmmm...

There are videos of people using it to run games like GTA5 (at the lowest settings ofcourse), so I'd think it'd be fine for videos/youtube and the like though?

>>
>>58611614
these chinese IPS panels may not be as good as what came from factory but they shit all over the TN panel that they come with...
>>
>>58610486
The discrete GPU won't be much better than the integrated one for most applications. That comes at the cost of battery life and heat, which can limit your CPU, and probably more importantly in your case, the fan will be noisy. In my case it's more of a problem because of limited memory though.

Though sure, if you really just want it for fairly menial tasks and aren't bothered by portability, it'd probably do quite well, but you'd still have to hope that the price stays low.
>>
>>58611385
>>58611397
u fokin roosky, get a tripcode already
>>
>>58612537
Portability as in battery life? I'm not really bothered so long as it will last an hour or so doing said 'menial tasks'. Whenever I use a laptop it's for extended periods so it's pointless even bothering with the battery.

If I can get it for under 200 does that seem like an ok price given my usage scenario? I note you can get a T420 or T520 for around that but they are poverty spec with a shit screen and a HDD.
>>

Partly battery life, but also the size and weight. It'll be reasonably thick and heavy, not unmanageable but not ideal to carry constantly.

I'm not too sure what a good price would be, but around 200 sounds alright just going off a quick look at ebay.
>>
>>58612775
Huh, I thought ThinkPad's were bricks but it's smaller in most dimensions and lighter than my current laptop. I can't say I enjoy carrying around a 15.6" laptop but fuck working for extended periods on a tiny screen with a shitty res.

is the t430 keyboard already different than t420?
In other words is the t420 the last t model with sturdy, big keys?
>>
>>58614949
The chiclet keyboards on the T430 and later are still sturdy and big, in some cases probably yet more solid. The main shortcoming is just the layout itself being a fair bit less bit less comfortable to use, beyond that it comes down to personal preference more than anything.
>>
>>58615086

I have efficient notebook already and I'm thinking about getting old T model as secondary machine, mostly to check this meme out. As the internals of these two models seem pretty similar, and both can be found with 1600w panels, I thought about chosing t420 for the keyboard itself.

I will have chicklets in any modern thinkpad for the rest of my life so t420 looks like the last viable ocassion to try the legacy keyboard out.
>>

>>
>>58615113
Sounds like you might as well go with the T420 then. There are definitely advantages with the T430 but if it's just as a secondary computer it likely wouldn't matter anyway. The prices reflect the differences to a reasonable degree as well.

I buy it for 20$ cause seller think that it has dead motherboard, because it didn't see 2.5hdd(it uses 1.8hdd 3.3v), so it was selling like a broken, i just made sata mod and stick in msata ssd. I don't give a fuck about scratches, it's just a tool.

I bought a fake one on ebay for an X220, and now have an X230 with the original IPS, and while the difference is there it isn't so drastic that people should be discouraged from getting the best compatible model they can find. It goes a little brighter, I don't have problems with tint (which I corrected on the previous display anyway) and the ghosting is to a minimum, but the fakes are still far preferable to tft.

Are you sure its DDR2 you need? Thinkwiki lists the T400 as using DDR3.

Otherwise there isn't too much you can fuck up. Ideally check the timings for your current memory against the new one to make sure it's not going to slow things down, but I doubt you'll find much for sale that's slower than the stock RAM.

I do a lot of CPU intensive stuff like using olex and other crystallography and it's starting to become annoying how long operations take. how difficult is it to replace the display? got mine a while ago and I'm currently upgrading anyway (5400 rpm drives should be outlawed).

also I'm wondering if I should put 16 or 8 GB in there. technically it could handle 16 and I really don't feel like upgrading again half a year later when programs have become even worse resource hogs again, but I am not sure if that wouldn't just turn everything else into the bottleneck

Pretty easy, because there's only one resolution for the X series up until the x240 you never have to worry about changing display cables or anything. Just do your best to find a good screen. This website has the best advice on that front: http://x220.mcdonnelltech.com/resources/

I only have 8gb on my x230 and I see no reason to add more. I do have applications that need 16gb but I'll probably end up getting my desktop shipped from my homeland before I need them so ultimately it's irrelevant.

THINKing about my first Thinkpad. Think is a funny word, no? :^)

My biggest question is: Should I stay the fuck away from i3? I'd already be putting $200 plus in for a new SSD and max ram. I want this thing to replace my Macbook Pro for daily use. I don't even really know why I don't like it. I also have an iPad Pro, but the x230t seems to be exactly what I need as far as form and toughness goes.

I know the IPS displays are desirable? Are they common on tablets? Is there anything else that stands out about this machine?

That's the X201s that has that display, and it's not that great. The viewing angles and colors make the T420 stock panels look good. All it really has going for it over the X220 and X230 is aspect ratio and resolution. Don't get me wrong, I love my X201s, but if you're buying an X series for the screen, you're better off with an X61T for that sweet 1400x1050 IPS, or those prebuilt X62s if they're still available.

the screen is interchangable and resolution is everything. no one cares about contrast, color or viewing angles on a thinkpad. I have to agree with you on the X61 though. 4:3 is even better. the X220 ruined it. everything after X201 is useless.

Just got a Thinkpad p50, it's pretty amazing so far, but I have a question about the SDD upgrade slots. I have a regular 2.5in SDD from an older laptop of mine I was hoping to install into it along with a 2.5 HDD I just got for it. I was wondering if there was anyway to fit a 2.5 SDD into the two M2 slots. It's almost a perfect fit, except the SATA cable I had in my old laptop won't allow the SDD to fit. Is it as simple as finding a better SATA cable or is the port not meant for a full 2.5 in SDD?

Not my pic, but next to the HDD is where I'm trying to fit the 2.5 SDD. I don't have the trays for the SDD chips, it's just open and looks like it could fit a whole 2.5 SDD.

But in all honesty we're stitching the last legs on old horses. To be honest, I have a Thinkpad because like the X machines and got nostalgic, but by the time you have to put money into it, you should have likely bought something more modern. Unless you can't afford it, but that's logic we generally grow out of.

My chromebook started dying so I went to Fry's to get one of their T430 refurbs.

The refurbs are weird. The company that cleaned this one up used stickers over the wristrests and the lid to hide blemishes. The dummy who put the sticker on the lid misaligned it so it looks kind of odd.

So far it's running like a champ. Plus the keyboard is super comfy.

It's difficult decision. While I dont really have anything negative about my t420 there is something really neat about the compact x220. Guy is selling it for $225. i5,ips,320gb,8gb,dock.

The t420 I have is also probably the best hardware variant you can get. Pretty much an i5 fully loaded. Would just need an msata or something to replace the 120gb ssd. Decisions decisions..

My X220 was a little bit hotter than I liked at 50 idle and 85-90 under load. My new X230 is much better now - idle at 40 and max load is 75.

I agree with >>58608016 , X230 fan is extremely quiet at idle and noticeable but nonintrusive at full load 100% CPU & GPU.

If you use a laptop for long periods of time you're going to need either an external display or an external keyboard and a laptop stand for optimal posture.

12" screen is no problem if you only use external screens for serious computing. Having docking stations makes attaching external devices easy. If you don't have external devices and constantly need to depend on a laptop screen then maybe X-series isn't for you.
>>
>>58626502
>>58626599
X1 carbon has a whole series of problems. Something like the X230 is the perfect compromise of Weight/Size/Battery/Performance/Functionality/Storage/Price. I have two SSDs in mine, it plays most modern Vidya sufficiently, and it's not a drag to take to lectures. What's not to love?

I did just that over Christmas, I upgraded from an X220 to an X230, it was a wonderful decision. Better temps, fresher battery, original IPS instead of one of dubious origin, and Vidya went from 3fps to 30fps (pic related, also I'm the guy who always posts MGSV) I wholeheartedly reccomend that everyone with an X220 move on up to an X230 and subsequently swap the keyboard. I had the USB 3.0 variant of the X220 but two USB 3.0 is even better than one!

That's why you use an external monitor or two for serious computing as you would with any other laptop. Single 15" FHD isn't going to be much better and larger ones are too huge to lug around comfortably.

Desktop is terrible if you want to work at more than one place.

>>
>>58627730
E series models aren't too terrible if you're buying new - they're about as good any any low-mid range laptop in most regards, but with a better keyboard, better cooling and a fair bit of the customisabilty of the better models. The downsides are just durabilty (still not as bad as some cheap trash out there) and size. If you're not moving it around too much it'll be as good as anything else you can get, otherwise there's little reason to go with one.

That's going off of my experience with my E530 though, no idea what more recent edge models are like.

>>
>>58627016

Agree. I'd much prefer matte, but the difference in contrast ratio and viewing angle is night and day. I feel like it gets way brighter too.
>>
Well /g/, i did it. I fell for the memes (in the good sense of the term)

I bought an X230 for $300 CAD
>8gb memory
>128SSD
>i5 3320M CPU 2.6 Ghz
>Win 7 x64 pro edition
>TN screen 1366x768 res
>Docking station included (with a dvd drive built in)

I'll tell you the what i like about it
>Snappy as fuck. The machine itself is super fast and responsive
>Aesthetic
>Keyboard is nice (I realize it's no x220 keyboard, but it's still an improvement from my previous chicklet styled keyboard)
>Screen brightness is superb
>Sturdy and solid, especially the frame (including the hinges [which was a big problem for me on my previous laptop])
>Machine stays cool and doesn't over heat

Now I'll tell you what I don't like. And keep in mind, some of these things might be a bit trivial and unimportant in the grand scheme of things... But you know how humans nature is- we focus on the negatives. Some of the things might even just revolve around getting used to it- but nevertheless, I wish it weren't so.
>Slightly noisy fan when compared to my old ultrabook
>The Fn and Ctrl keys got switched on the left side and that's driving me fucking bonkers
>Track-pad is sub-par, and I can't figure out how to scroll with it for the life of me (no two-finger scroll/side scroll)
>Speakers aren't all that loud
>128 SSD is in fact far less than that (even without bloatware) at 78gb free space only. (Obviously this will fluctuate for everyone, but I was a bit disappointed at this)
>9 Cell battery is ambiguously less than 5 hours on balance mode. It also feels like it's flimsily attached to the machine
>There is no backlit keyboard on my machine for some reason. Maybe there is but I'm too stupid to access it.

Over all, the negatives don't come close to impacting the over-all experience of this machine; and therefore I would highly recommend the X230
>>
>>58628838
The BIOS menu should have an option to swap functionality of the Fn and Ctrl keys.
>>
>>58623680
how much did you actually adjust?
>>
>>58628838
>The Fn and Ctrl keys got switched on the left side and that's driving me fucking bonkers
Thinkpads set the standard and simply didn't waver when everyone else changed it around. You should be able to switch the functions in BIOS, although the keycaps obviously won't be accurate.

>Track-pad is sub-par, and I can't figure out how to scroll with it for the life of me (no two-finger scroll/side scroll)
Disable it in BIOS and learn you some clitmouse. It's one of the best features of these machines.

>9 Cell battery is ambiguously less than 5 hours on balance mode. It also feels like it's flimsily attached to the machine
Used machines rarely have good batteries. If you were to replace it with a fresh genuine 9cell, you'd likely get double the time you have now.

>There is no backlit keyboard on my machine for some reason. Maybe there is but I'm too stupid to access it.
Not all --30s had backlit keyboards. Fn-Space is the key combination that would cycle between nothing, the backlight, and Thinklight. If you don't have it, Fn+Space will just toggle the Thinklight on and off.

Empty 2,5" slot is quite nice when you need to recover data from someone's broken laptop. If you unlock memory clocks with custom BIOS you get better iGPU performance.
