IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

>>58572740
It's not the spash screen which takes time. I'ts the whole POST that takes time.

POST takes longer if you've got memoy test enabled, but there's always some tests or processing that are being run that you can't disable. You'll simply not get 5 second boot time on a T420.

since the plastic spacer thing fell off i just filled the gap designed for it with paper (on battery side) so pin is not bent anymore.

what purpose does it serve (the plastic pin)?

My chromebooks battery died and to replace it would cost almost as much as buying it again. Instead I've been looking at thinkpads.

Looking for something that is portable with good battery life comparable to the chromebook, preferably around 8 hours of light usage (pdf / powerpoint viewing in class and light web browsing). Will also be using it around the house/couch for light gaming, probably using steam in home streaming though. Is AC wireless a possbility without a dongle?

I checked out a y410p and the only thing putting me off was the 1600*900 res.

Does an X230 do they come with touchscreen options stock?

X220: "Maximum DDR3 speed depends on the BIOS version. BIOS versions up to 1.28 allow RAM speeds up to 1866MHz. BIOS versions 1.29 and above limit RAM to 1333MHz. Modified versions of BIOS available that remove this limitation."

i5-2520M on Intel page states 1333MHz max. What's the deal with that? Is it only i7's or something?
>>
>>58582492
I personally don't think it's worth worrying about. You will NEVER notice a difference with RAM speeds outside of benchmarks.
>>
>>58582550
Not quite.

The one case where it matters is making integrated graphics faster.

If that's your goal you're better off getting an X230, which not only has a faster iGPU but also allows even higher ram speeds WITHOUT bios modifications.
>>
>>58582199

>>58572920

>>58582136
Just take windows 7 man.
I have a D610? Running XP PE Black.
Also some people don't care if it is running the current windows because they want an 'old working system' and will settle for XP.
>>
>>58582316
please go to ThinkPad Forums if you really want someone to help you.

You must have the wrong drivers for your device
Also you didnt tell us what OS you are using (please post on TPF not here), I like to use HWinfo to find out more info on the specifics of my device to help it out.
I recommend downloading the ThinkVantage driver updater.
it works about 95% of the time, 5% being one driver not wanting to work.

>>58582492
RAM speed doesn't really matter, though if you can say why you need it other than just because can help.

>>58582593
Problem is that there are plenty of Sandy Bridge i5 laptops going for $150 and below
Core 2 Duos, depending how good you list them and wait, can go for $120. It depends on the buyer and condition.

>buying an X1 and not an X1C
What happend to it and which one did you get? we are on the fifth one.
Crazy if you had a QC problem on an X1C4, but it does happen.

>>58582673
It depends
You need to download the correct version of windows for it.
I don't even bother with XP tablet versions, they are a fucking bitch to find
OK i am drunk right now but there is like 5 numbers that you need to match to the correct ISO for it to activate correctly.

Hey guys. I recently got a T61 and I was wondering if anyone had encountered this issue before.

On windows 7 64bit I can't seem to get the GM965 display driver to handle aspect ratio scaling at all. I've got a couple of old games installed, and running anything at a 4:3 resolution causes it to stretch to fill the whole screen.

I can go into the display driver options, open the display scaling menu, but it won't let me apply any changes.

Sorry for asking for tech support, but googling isn't really turning up anything solid.

The T430/X230 both fit in around 5 years old. Newer thinkpads are fine too if that's what you want, but you're paying top dollar for minor design improvements. The xx40 series onwards use ultra low power CPUs as well so performance isn't massively different beyond battery life.

Jesus why. Get something with an i5 at least; the screen will probably be better too.

i5's you can throw in more RAM, and get dual channel. x220 allows you to clock up to 1866MHz with modded firmware (so a slight performance increase.)

i5's could take more advantage of an SSD too; less bottlenecks, SATA-III, etc.

It would be worth the extra $35-$50 (USD) imo.

Or any tweks to tweak battery life ? Currently on my t410 I'm downclocking the nvidia card while on battery. I've written a small java application, which calls nvidiaInspector from the command prompt with arguments to limit the max freq.

How badly could I go picking this up? I could probably scrounge everything for it save the motherboard and battery, do T430s's tend to have any issues with their motherboards which could have gotten this thing onto the scrapheap in the first place?

>>58579755
I'm not too experienced with Lenovo's tablets, but I'd consider looking into the backlight fuse on the motherboards since that's much more likely to go than the backlight itself. Good luck finding the fuse though, I have no idea how well documented those things are.

>>
>>58584884
Going from my experience with my T410 having the same issue, the process is:
>Test it with a multimeter to make sure it's broken
>Try to find an equivalent fuse
>Solder old fuse off
>Spend half an hour trying to attach new fuse and fucking up because its tiny
>Realise the motherboard starting to warp slightly and just use solder to bridge the points instead
It's a lot of fucking around but it worked out well in the end.

If you don't do the pins right you end up disabling the trackpoint. It left me very confused, but the trick is to really peel back the keyboard connector all the way and put a bit of electrical tape in.

I haven't gotten around to doing the bios change because all keys including the F row work, only things that don't work are the cluster of keys at the top right which are just a bit mixed around, and the tab back and tab forward are still page up and page down.

On a T400, would maxing out (replacing) the RAM, adding an SSD and (optionally) getting a new battery still be a sensible investment?

Money is tight and I'm be afraid of spending too much on it if it'd be cheaper to just upgrade to a newer T4xx model.
>>
>>58589747
Also, here in Europe, I got the T400 for €75 3 ys ago from someone who worked at IBM and applied to their employee-only used Thinkpad offer. Getting another (or a newer one) through that venue is no longer an option.
>>
>>58589747
Honestly, just look up the CPU model on cpubenchmark (you can usually just type in the model in Google and it will be one of the first 3 results) then compare it to the newer laptops. Chances are it won't be better by more than 10-20%, and the newer laptop won't have a good SSD and a single stick of RAM.

alternatively, the worst acceptable screen would be rhe X1 carbon 1600x900 TN panel, which can be swapped into a t430

highjacking anons post with a similar question about my T400
I found to my surprise that I actually only have 2 GB ram and that's is making fairly mundane tasks to bog down the computer.
It says on https://support.lenovo.com/bg/en/documents/pd005598 that the model only supports up to 4 GB.
This may be a very dumb , downright computer illiterate question, but will a 8 BG ram stick work on it?
>>
>>58592369
I'm the hostage ;-) I followed the link in the thread starter to find http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T400

Re-reading that I realize it doesn't actually say if it has one or two slots (I assumed two). And if there were two it's also not clear if a 8GB stick would work or if it has to be 2x4GB (as I assumed again)

I have a T400 with 8 GIgs of ram
honestly mate the best thing would be a CPU upgrade but there are none that the T400 takes that make a palpable difference for the price.

This is what your performance would look like if you decided to spring for the 8Gigs of ram though I never really cared for updating my Hard Drive I might if my current one fails but it's been solid for over 8 years.

What's the most powerful ThinkPad I can get with great build quality? Any with a decent GPU?
>>
>>58575006
>>58584212

pls how do I source decent batteries for it ? sadly i can't find any original ones in boxes on ebay.de, i can go with a chinky one + the mod and expect to change it in a year. The battery it comes with has 80% wear - around 2.5h

Can't go wrong.

Dad has asked what a good external monitor would be to compliment his t420, any suggestions? He just uses it for office work for the most part.

Are thinkpads only cheap in US? Here in EU everything is at least 30% more expensive and buying from ebay means shipping +taxes +eu adapter so it's not worth it.

Anything really. I'd recommend an IPS, 23 to 24 inch.

Hi /g/, I have a T430 that worked perfectly until yesterday, I used it at school without issues, but in the evening it started acting like a little rebel bitch. The screen backlight doesn't work and neither does the keyboard, so I assume it's the lid detection sensor. What should I do, /g/?

How the fuck can i make fingerprint-gui to work on x201? The shit won't fire up the device and the pam settings on arch wiki is useless.

the HDD is not important you can put there any 2.5 drive you want or a ssd, thats probably the easyest thing to replace afther ram
>>
>>58599034

Amerifat speaking. I'm moving abroad in the next month or two and will need to get my T420 the proper power cable for New Zealand. Is the half of the power cable that plugs into the wall a standard or proprietary connector? I need to figure out what to Google.

Hey /tpg/ my original X220 battery dropped to these stats overnight, but it still works like it has normal capacity. How do I fix it, tried recalibrating, doesn't work also can't change drivers from microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method battery to Lenovo stuff.
Should I install win7 to see if it can fix it? I dual boot arch and arch reports even worse life, like 0.35% for "full" (and yes this is real percentage it wasn't divided by 100) which isn't actually full but 2890/50160 mWh

>>58596217
There's thinkfan but I don't know if that's in openSUSE's repos. It's not 100% straightforward to install it though--I think it's one more command after installing it to load some kernel module. Refer to thinkwiki. After you got it installed, running "echo level 7 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/ibm/fan" will make it run at the highest rpm.
>>
>>58602226
Kill yourself
Your battery is reporting bad values, and even if the cells are fine this causes confusion on the OS side.
Return it and get a proper battery. Faggot.

Would a T400 with a C2D be a good machine? I am looking for a Laptop that I can make really secure. Just in case I would ever need it, and for shit posting on 4chan.
Only thing that worries me is heat generated and battery life. They also seem to be extremely cheap.
The one I am looking at has a 160GB HDD (Which I can easily upgrade to an SSD) and 2GB of RAM.
>>
Fell for the thinkpad meme and bought a T430 on a budget (6gb RAM, 500GB HD, i5-3320m). Should be arriving next month.

Eventually I'd like to upgrade to a SSD and 16GB RAM. How hard is it to do this by yourself when compared to other notebooks (I only have experience putting together desktops)?
>>
>>58605017
Extremely easy mate, anybody can do it. You should have no issues!
