During the installation of a new distro keep the partition called /home untouched.

In linux all relevant files are in /home. Everything else is easily replacible garbage.

copy any config files that you need into a temporary directory in /home and when you reinstall the programs under your new distro, copy and overwrite the default configs with the ones from your old distro.
>>
>>58592999
/etc keeps system-wide configuration files.

Which may be different in every distro.
Trying to fit old system-wide configs into a completely different distribution completely defeats the purpose of distrohopping.

If possible any changes to the configuration of software should be done on a per-user basis.

Hey guys, somewhat recently I accidentally the whole hdd, and til I can get a new one I've been running Linux Mint (Cinnamon) on a USB stick

Anyways, I'm impressed with the stuff Linux has, the downside is that a lot of stuff need to be installed manually and there's tons of technical aspects which flies over my head.

Recently I've decided to pass the time playing RPGMaker games (like Yume Nikki, Ib, etc, etc), and I followed this guide to get it working, after installing Wine and updating it to v1.8: http://www.supershigi.com/forums/index.php?topic=888.0

So far I'm doing fine, except the BGM files won't play, since it's in MIDI. I've checked the installgentoo and archlinux wikis and installed timidity with freepats, but still nothing, anyone have any ideas?

Also, this is a secondary problem, but games made in the "WOLF RPG editor" (One Way Heroics, etc) are also incapable of playing bgm or music, and since there's not "Music" folder for games made in this engine, I can't verify if they're stored in .mid format.

tl;dr: Playing games through WIne, BGM won't play because it's in MIDI, wut do? Really new to this so just pointing me to a page won't really help much, pls hand hold

Ever asked yourself WTF IS HAPPENING? strace will tell you.

What the fuck happens when you replace some text in a file with sed -i?

You see, it creates a randomly named temp file and when finished, it overwrites the original with it.

As it is now, I have to set it as the default device manually so that when I press the volume up/down keys the audio going to the headset is affected rather than the onboard speakers.

So I just updated my system and Infinality seems to have been removed from Arch for reasons unknown which has somehow completely broken my GTK theme and icon theme. I've uninstalled everything to do with Infinality and removed the repo from pacman.conf, to no avail, so I had to uninstall my GTK and icon themes because trying to switch to them wasn't having any effect at all. But now when I try to build the GTK theme (Numix) I'm getting this:
/usr/lib/ruby/2.4.0/rubygems/dependency.rb:308:in `to_specs': Could not find 'sass' (>= 0.a) among 13 total gem(s) (Gem::MissingSpecError)

have it run your program or script, make it depend on what you need it to depend on, give it the type "oneshot" so it just runs once and doesn't hang about or restart, make it wanted by multi-user or graphical, and enable it so it's run with one of those (aka, you're normal bootup)

Why do people say commands? It's just programs that you run. It's not a "command". Is opening Firefox a command?
>>
>>58600755
Firefox is a program. You run the program firefox by emitting the command firefox. You use commands to command programs.

No! Typing the word firefox will execute the program. Commanding a program would look like this:
$ firefox kill yourself
>>
>>58600755
Firefox is a program.
You run firefox by issuing a command to the computer to run firefox.

Your command (in this case firefox) is a directive to a command-line interface which is another program, in this case I assume Unix shell which is a command-line interpreter.

And yes clicking a menu option in a graphical user interface to run Firefox is technically a command as well.

For a general-purpose desktop PC the LTS version of ubuntu should be "stable enough"

But it all depends on the purpose.

It's definitely not suited for mission critical applications, and even the biggest canonical shill will not try to convince you otherwise. It's still commonly used on servers.

After searching for a fix I found that the problem is related to snd-hda-intel driver.

Any idea how to approach this issue? I've tried a bunch of distros (Arch/Solus/Debian/Fedora) and this problem persists.

what naming scheme do you use for backing up default configuration files.

for a moment I was comfortable with Emacs doing it for me with a copy of the original file with ~ appended to the name it since it stood out.

But then I realized it will do that emacs will put the "last previous version" in the ~ file.

I'd just like ta interject fo' a moment. What you’re referrin ta as Linux, is up in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken ta callin it, GNU plus Linux. Linux aint a operatin system unto itself yo, but rather another free component of a gangbangin' straight-up functionin GNU system made useful by tha GNU corelibs, shell utilitizzles n' vital system components comprisin a gangbangin' full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computa playas run a modified version of tha GNU system every last muthafuckin day, without realizin dat shit. Through a peculiar turn of events, tha version of GNU which is widely used todizzle is often called "Linux", n' nuff of its playas aint aware dat it is basically tha GNU system, pimped by tha GNU Project. There straight-up be a Linux, n' these playas is rockin it yo, but it is just a part of tha system they use.
Linux is tha kernel: tha program up in tha system dat allocates tha machine’s resources ta tha other programs dat you run. I aint talkin' bout chicken n' gravy biatch. Da kernel be a essential part of a operatin system yo, but useless by itself; it can only function up in tha context of a cold-ass lil complete operatin system. Linux is normally used up in combination wit tha GNU operatin system: tha whole system is basically GNU wit Linux added, or GNU/Linux fo' realz. All tha so-called "Linux" distributions is straight-up distributionz of GNU/Linux.

read up on security policy of debian branches.

debian security team does not maintain security patches for testing and sid, only for the main release (stable).

testing is actually the least secure debian branch out there.
Sid updates packages frequently, so all discovered vulnerabilities will be patched as soon as the new software release is deemed "stable" for sid ie. doesn't have critical bugs.

Testing can be left for weeks or even month without an update, especially now since the current testing branch (stretch) is undergoing a freeze and is ready'd up to become new stable.

If you want debian testing to be used for a server, there's a distro. It's called Ubuntu.
Ubuntu is based on debian testing but has independent security team.
Ubuntu LTS is frequently used for private servers, so consider installing it if outdated packages of jessie bother you.

or just wait a few months for stable to be updated from jessie to stretch

I'm on Debian Testing in a laptop with an AMD APU with dual graphics (AMD/AMD).

I would like to know if the discrete GPU is been used and switched on and off.

If I run xrandr --listproviders, I get this:

Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x8a cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 4 outputs: 3 associated providers: 0 name:radeon

So it seems that is seeing just one GPU, but if I check the switch file on /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/, I get this:

0:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:01.0
1:DIS: :DynOff:0000:01:00.0

It seems that both cards are there, but even while playing a video, the Discrete card appears off.

Any ideas?

Hey there, just switched to sysvinit from systemd on Debian Testing. Went well except for one issue: Restarting and other things don't work from lightdm or lxsession-logout anymore. This could be fixed in OpenBSD by simply installing and configuring messagebus, but that fix doesn't work here. I can stilll reboot by typing

For anyone curious, the reason that I have decided to switch from systemd to sysvinit is because I use a very low-powered laptop to do my computing. sysvinit is much faster a boot than systemd on this system.

>>
>>58608658
Why would there be a standard?

You're either mounting them for just extra storage, or you're mounting them to make them act as a seamless and specific part of your filestructure.

The later is pretty much "standard", if you're doing that then you know exactly where to mount it, no question about it.
As for the former, then it's like I said, nothing more than extra storage space so put it wherever you want. /mnt is fine, some newer distros like to have a separate /media, I have no idea why but whatever floats your boat.

I mount them off root.

I don't do this but it's a possible plan I thought of recently. Mount everything in directories in /something, then bind mount each sub-directory in a more convenient place. So
/something/drive1/anime -> ~/videos/anime
/something/drive1/books -> ~/books
/something/drive2/movies -> ~/videos/movies
/something/drive2/programming -> ~/books/programming
where a -> b means the directory a is bind-mounted at b, and drive1, drive2 are the filesystems you mounted.

>>
>>58608806
Yes you can as long as the motherboard supports VT-d as well.

It isn't too hard and it's really, really fucking good if you get it working perfectly. I highly recommend using Arch/Manjaro/Antergos since the Arch Wiki is really self explanatory (see PCI Passthrough via OVMF). Though anything else works as well if needed. Fedora 26 is apparently going to make it easier to do via GUI tools and Boxer I believe, however Fedora 26 isn't out yet so right now you need to do it the "hard" way.

Just read how to isolate the GPU in the Arch Wiki page (goes for pretty much all distros, except the mkinitcpio part) and make the VM using virt-manager.

I highly recommend using virt-manager and virsh to make the VM. As virt-manager has vCPU-pinning which is something that QEMU bash scripts don't do and it'll help a lot when fixing the sound issues you might encounter.

Good luck, Anon. It'll require some reading, but once you have it running you'll be happy you did. I actually bought new hardware just for this feature and I don't regret doing so one single bit. It has saved me a lot of frustration of dual booting and playing games or using video editing software while in Linux.

I have a question, if you could help me, since I have no experience with this. I asked in some other threads but got no good replies. Anyway, I have to set up two servers, a school server and one for small businesses.

For the school server, how do I set up one for 250 users, the server has to have at least 2x8 core processors, 1GB of network connection, at least 2x300gb sas raid1, 4x400 SSD raid10 and 2x400gb SSD raid1.

For a small business you're supposed to set up a server for VMware ESXi, a NAS hard drive, for 12 workstations (2GB RAM, 500gb HDD) and 2 graphic workstations.

This is all hypothetical, but I will have to actually set everything up later on; it's part of a course at school and part of my passing grade.

if you do not see that as a glaring issue you should read more

Yes it does. You need to enable Intel Virtualization Technology (also sometimes called VT-x) and VT-d in your BIOS.

VT-d is located under "Chipset".

what do i do next to install GNU IceCat in debian jessie?

I extracted the tar and everything, and have icecat-45.5.1 in the downloads folders

the README is also extremely confusing

I really wish it was as easy as sudo apt-get install icecat but that doesn't work

Here's the deal.

I'm considering to change distro from my Frankendebian into either Xubuntu or Mint+Xfce; but to be honest I distrust Canonical since the Amazon adware fiasco, that's why I was asking for security issues with Mint.

If it's just about the kernel updates not being "encouraged" enough by Mint, well, I can change this by hand just fine. But if there are others, I'd really like to know.

Hey guys I am at a loss here. I'm trying to add myself to the vboxusers group so I can access USB's in my VM.

Host is Linux Ubuntu 16.04 MATE and the VM is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I get pic related whenever I try to add myself.

So portage says I need a USE flag that doesn't exist
The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
cpu_flags_x86_sse? ( cpu_flags_x86_mmxext )

Your username is "joshua", not "Joshua". Case matters.

>>58610759
Short version:
echo 'CPU_FLAGS_X86="sse mmxext"' > /etc/portage/make.conf

Long version: What you're looking at is a "USE_EXPAND variable". Basically, it's a bunch of USE flags that all start with "cpu_flags_x86_", and since you're possibly going to have a bunch of those installed, Portage allows you to just set CPU_FLAGS_X86, and automatically expands them to USE flags prefixed with "cpu_flags_x86_" (so, CPU_FLAGS_X86="sse mmxext" becomes USE="cpu_flags_x86_sse cpu_flags_x86_mmxext").

Incidentally, LINGUAS, VIDEO_CARDS, and so on all work the same way. See the last section in https://devmanual.gentoo.org/general-concepts/use-flags/
>>
>>58610855
Samefag, the > in the command for the "short version" should be a >>, unless you want to erase /etc/portage/make.conf while you're there. Or just use an editor.

well that worked. So I'm now a part of the vboxusers group. How do I add USB's to the VM? None of my USB's are showing up AT ALL. The Host sees them of course. I unmount the USB from the host and even then, the VM doesn't see it. I have USB enabled in the VM settings. I can't add any devices as VirtualBox doesn't recognize the drive is even plugged in.

I've been troubleshooting this shit for almost a full day now and it won't go through. This is ridiculous.

Does it work when you run Virtualbox as root? If so, you need to add your user to another group, probably "plugdev" or "usb".

probably is safer to just set the adequate write permission to that usb device rather than trying to run vbox as root
>>
>>58610942
I did that and it says "no usb devices detected". I can't screenshot while I have that menu open.
>>58610940
I never tried running Vbox as root so I'll give that a go right now.

I'll check to see if I'm already in the plugdev and usb group. I should be by default yeah? I mean I'm hte only user/admin of this PC.
>>
>>58610974
The idea isn't to actually try to run your VM as root or anything, it's just to check if it's a permissions error. If even root has a problem with it, there's something else wrong.

>>58610978
I haven't run Ubuntu in a while, so I don't know what your default groups are. You can check by running the "groups" command in a terminal.

Hey again:

>>58606988
Never fixed the reboot issue. Not too concerened about it.

So I'm trying to completly remove systemd from my system now, and the only things that are blocking me are these packages:

The following additional packages will be installed:
consolekit libck-connector0 libpam-ck-connector
The following packages will be REMOVED:
appstream* apt-config-auto-update* cgmanager* colord* colord-data*
dbus-user-session* exfat-fuse* exfat-utils* gconf-editor* gdisk*
gnome-packagekit* gnome-packagekit-data* gnome-settings-daemon*
gnome-system-log* gnome-system-tools* gvfs* gvfs-backends* gvfs-daemons*
gvfs-fuse* gvfs-libs* iio-sensor-proxy* libappstream4* libatasmart4*
libcgmanager0* libcolorhug2* libgusb2* libmtp-common* libmtp-runtime*
libmtp9* libnfs8* libnih-dbus1* libnih1* libnm0* liboobs-1-5*
libpam-systemd* libpolkit-backend-1-0* libudisks2-0* nautilus-data*
packagekit* packagekit-tools* pk-update-icon* policykit-1*
policykit-1-gnome* system-tools-backends* systemd* systemd-shim* udisks2*

Appstream in partciular seems to be important, but it relies on systemd. I have no idea what the rest of them are, but keep in mind that I did have GNOME installed, but I have removed it. Is gvfs is GNOME's virtual file system, it's safe to remove those, I assume. I really don't like the idea of touching packagekit either... Consider this a "Can I remove dizz?" kinda shitpost.

>>58609938
just run ./icecat. It's precompiled

To use virtualbox's usb pass-through feature you need a proprietary plugin (Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack):

OK So I launched VirtualBox as root and it sees the device now. Problem is it still doesn't mount in Windows 7. It did the "installing drivers" portion in windows and said it recognizes a USB device plugged in but it doesn't even show up in device manager or partition menu.

>>

>>
>>58611027
Consolekit (and probably Policykit, which is marked for removal) is required to get rebooting from anything other than "sudo reboot" to work. systemd has consolekit built into it because systemd is the Borg and assimilates everything. dbus-user-session would probably be pulled back in as a dependency.

gvfs is sometimes used by non-GNOME programs who happen to use GTK.

udisks goes with udev, and (surprise!) handles disks. udev can handle the basics on its own though, so I don't know what udisks is used for.

you know more about appstream than i do, but other than that and what i mentioned that should be a safe apt transaction

Did you compile your kernel with necessary firmware?
Do you have amd graphical drivers installed? try booting with nomodeset in grub.
Editing /etc/rc.conf test rc_parallel="YES" OR rc_logger="YES"
Parallel with allow other jobs to run at the same time but logging will become a mess. Logging will be useless if the hangup is /dev related
Also use a livecd to check /var/log/dmesg,messages,rc.log

were you the one with kernel panics on boot?

I might be wrong, but you could safely remove udev-settle from whatever run level it's on.

mount your gentoo partition and delete the symlink somewhere in /etc/runlevel
>>
>>58612510
what should that do?
>>
>>58612813
Not make your computer hang.

Look at /etc/init.d/udev-settle to see what it does. Removing the symlink will make it not run 'udevadm settle'.

I don't have it enabled to run at boot, so I guess it won't break your system by disabling it.
