Because somehow we didn't have one today yet.

I'm using Iridium browser and it's great, but it randomly breaks sites like Amazon, Instagram or even Urban Dictionary. Is there anything that can be done or does it just shoot itself in the foot with its built-in features?

Alternatively, what's the best Chromium fork that removes as much of the botnet as possible?

why the fuck are there so many retards on /g/ today? fuck no, you only need an OS on one HDD, if you're doing SATA to USB it'll just look like a fucking flash drive and if it's hooked in you'll gotta do some RAID shit tho it's done automatically my nigga FUCK
>>
>>58534163
Well, this is the Stupid Question Thread. Also, i asked 'cause the RAID didn't do automatically.
Basically, the HD works well with a SO, but doesn't work if a try to use it as "flash drive" but connect with the SATA cable.

So my uncle's 2005 laptop died and I'm giving him my old build which is good enough for his basic tasks.

He used Windows 7 and he was used to that system. Problem is, now I'm in charge of this and I don't have any idea of which system should I put in there. Windows 10 isn't exactly stable and it might be confusing for him. Windows 7 seems less secure now. I'm not too sure which antivirus to put on that thing, since I don't use Windows anymore, and I want him not to call me for technical support every other week.

So, the two questions are: Should I still install Windows 7? Which is a decent free antivirus in 2017?
>>
>>58534368
Just give him a fresh Windows 7 SP1 install. If his needs are that basic he'll never even have his system security tested.

Install free Bitdefender, it barely has a system footprint and will suit his needs fine.

Screen protectors do help, yes. Although the main purpose is protecting from minor scratches. Glass protectors aren't as much about added protection as they are about being clearer and less of a pain to swipe on. I wouldn't go back to regular.
>>
>>58534495
>Are tempered glass screen protectors a meme?
Kind of.

>Is a force that would have cracked the screen dispersed by use of a screen protector?

Depends where it hits.

Problem is with most recent phones there's glass exposed on the edges that the protector won't reach, so unless you drop it flat on the face or also use a case, it's not going to help much for shattering.

They are useful for scratch resistance though

If you've gone through that list thoroughly, then you've done all you can do. It's down to replacing parts. Mobo is next.

This probably deserves it's own thread, but it could also be solved in one reply, so probably not, either way, here goes.

About two weeks ago, I installed Voyager in a partition, after regular Ubuntu shat the bed while I was trying to fix the login loop, and my brother(about to finish a degree in computer engineering) suggested it to me. Anyway, I kept Botnet 10 in a partition for vidya, and after installing Voyager I didn't touched it again until yesterday, when I wanted to play something, while also allowing my Dropbox folder to update(using Voyager, I created a spreadsheet to keep track of stuff, and save it in my Windows's Dropbox folder to upload next time I logged in).

And now comes the not-so-fun part. After entering my user password, it loaded for a bit, and then "Preparing Windows" replaced the loading message. I've no idea why was that happening, but after it finished loading, it threw me into a generic desktop with all my vidya installed, and it said "Failed to log in into your account, this can usually be fixed by logging out and re-logging in."

And so I did. Like 5-10 times, to no avail. I thought that maybe the fact that I was saving files from a different OS onto the main partition somehow fucked it up, and so I moved all the shit I remember moving in, and tried again, but nothing changed, I kept failing to log in.

I don't know if I just suck at googling, but no other problem of this kind popped up when I searched, so I have no idea what to do. HELP.

Turn of raid. Forget about raid. If you're not booting from it, you don't need to install an OS to it. Just install it as an extra drive on your system and use a backup program. As a much safer option, get an external drive or enclosure and connect it that way

Fairly unlikely. The guy at the computer shop probably just mis-diagnosed the issue. Rather than pouring more money into this system, you might just take the opportunity to start over.

So I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this but I'll post anyway (if there's a more relevant thread for this please redirect me)

I'm working on a fairly large powershell project, and I need to have two looping functions running in parallel. The first is a looping query that retrieves new items every 10 seconds based on a set of filters, this query needs to retrieve the new items and then add them to a Queue collection. The second looping function is simply running the items in the Queue through the main workflow of the script and generating/sending alerts for the appropriate recipients.

Simply put, I need help with setting up both of these functions to run in parallel, this is a script which will be running 24/7, so I need both loops to execute without interrupting/delaying each other.

From what I have researched, it seems as though using the 'start-job/receive-job' cmdlets won't work for me because these are jobs which do not end, the looping query should be sending the request every 30 seconds, all day long, and queueing up each new item retrieved into the Queue collection

If anyone has any ideas/advice, or any resources related to this that they could point me towards I would be very grateful

Chances are slim that I'll be able to get in contact with this guy before deadline, so what's should I do? It came as a text document, so if I were to do something like create a qq email and send the document to that, would I be able to access it then?

Try to register a qq.com account and forward the mail
Chances are you can then open the attachment

If not, ask him to resend the mail to your new QQ account. That will be easier than explaining the issue to him

You use another computer.
Or have a linux USB around.
Even if you dont use Linux you must always have one around to recover shit when this happens.

I assume its a laptop and you dropped it or hit it really hard while it was on, or just hard enough while it was in hibernating/sleep mode.

Download a Linux ISO (Linux Mint if you wanna something easy).
Use Rufus to make the USB bootable with the ISO.

Maybe start Boot manager or change Boot priority in your BIOS(ESC, F2 or F9-F10)
Done, you just insert it in your computer and Linux will start instead windows.

Then you type Disk and you will see what is going on with the HDD.

You won't get Something Happened :( as an error code.
If you don't AAA game, you don't need DX12. And most Jap games still run on DX9 and DX11.
If you were too young to remember, then know that Microsoft is doing what it has always been doing for the past few decades, in this case, grabbing features from Apple and Linux like virtual desktops and pretending it is something new.
Don't forget that every new windows operating system is a kludge of old windows hacks going all the way back to QDOS. That a desktop operating system can be this unstable compared to an operating system designed for servers tells you all you need to know about Microsoft.
>>
>>58540876
>You won't get Something Happened :( as an error code.
This can be changed with a setting. Or I know for a fact that W10Privacy lets you change it at any rate, there's probably a setting you can do normally for it as well.
>If you don't AAA game, you don't need DX12. And most Jap games still run on DX9 and DX11.
DX9 and DX11 still work perfectly fine on W10. The only thing that's fucked is DirectDraw and that's been broken since W8, hence why I asked why you recommended that as an alternative since it doesn't really have any better compatibility for this stuff.

If you want maximum compatibility with really old games (mainly) W7 is probably still the best option though.

port forward, you can't host services behind a NAT without forwarding ports
>>
>>58541439
Even on local servers?
Also what ports do I forward? If my server for instance uses 5555, what ports would I forward in the router? Says it needs a start and end port or some shit.
>>
>>58541447
start port is the port used by the FTP server. normally port 21. you can verify this (ie fucking google)
end port is the port that want to access via your router.
so if your ftp instance is in ip: 192.168.1.5:21
you forward it to your router in ip: 123.123.123.123:5555
>>
>>58541447
port forwarding is only needed to get through the NAT, it doesn't apply within your lan

lets say you have two machines, 10.1.1.2 and 10.1.1.3
if you host a service on 10.1.1.2:5555, you can access it on 10.1.1.3 without any additional steps, as it doesn't go through a NAT, it stays within your LAN

to access the service on 10.1.1.2:5555 through the NAT (over the internet), you need to create a port forwarding rule on your router that forwards as external port (typically the same as the internal port, but doesn't have to be) to 10.1.1.2:5555

note, unless it's for public file sharing, i'd recommend using sftp (not to be confused with ftps) instead of ftp

One is 1 Tb and the other is 250 gigs, which would you recommend putting where?

I've read the wiki on it. Wtf I hate internet now. Memes aside, I have firefox, and ublock origin, does that makes any difference?

Does scroll lock actually do anything in modern operating systems?

Besides programs that use it as a random toggle for something I mean.

Not OS-wide, but some programs do still honor it. Try it in Excel for example.

How do I load a subtitle file in mpv in the middle of playing a video.
I can do it by dragging the file in the window but I need a solution that does not interrupt viewing, without removing fullscreen.
I'm using a GNU/Linux distro, if that matters.

I forgot to add, it was not a link on a webpage that I clicked, but a bookmark from the bookmarks toolbar. When I go right click on firefox (when company page is opened), view page info, there is no "Refering URL" field, so I guess, I panicked for nothing. Can somebody confirm this?

Anon setting up FTP here again.

On Filezilla, what is the custom port range, and what is passive mode?
I think I've set my server's port up to something other than 21, but I don't know what this range is.

does this mean, that whatever acc I'm signed into I could potentially get fucked over?

Assuming the universe has an edge, would it be possible to get there in a finite period of time? Or would it be expanding away from you too fast and you'd never be able to get there?
>>
>>58542160
What's the password that a user of an FTP server would need to input? Is it the one you set up when creating the server in Filezilla?
>>
>>58542225
2nd part. The universe is always expanding. You'll never see the end of the Universe. Ever.
>>
If human perception of time is proportional to age, then does that mean you have lived about half of your subjective life when you are around six years old?

DX12 aside, is there anything out that doesn't work on Windows 7 yet? General stuff, not just a specific piece of software like the latest Microsoft Office pack or something. I realize there are things that work better on 8/8.1/10, but DX12 is the only thing I've heard of that doesn't work at all on older ones.
>>
>>58542160
Port range is used by the client for outgoing connections, default is fine.

FTP has 2 modes, active and passive. You probably want passive, it's what is used for clients behind firewalls and NAT.

>>58542235
Use user/pass that you configured in the Users/Groups settings on the server.
>>
>>58542366
I thought it was all set up, but other computers on my LAN can't find it.
Is the IP of the FTP the same as my PC on the LAN?
>>
>>58542361
I don't think so. It is in the interest of software developers to not develop their stuff to be incompatible with a system that still holds a large percentage of the market if they don't have a good reason to.

For that matter there's not much older stuff that doesn't work on W7 either. (Well, as long as you're not going back TOO far.) It's pretty much the best choice for general compatibility.
>>
>>58542361
>yet
DX12 wont be comming to win7.
And why don't you just google "win 10 features" ?
What do you want to know?
>>
>>58542372
Does "can't find it" mean you can't ping it?
I didn't read your old posts so idk what your situation is.

The server (if enabled) is listening on an IP address, most likely a internal ip starting with 192.168.
Machines in the same lan should be able to find it.
>>
>>58542375
Didn't they also say DX10 would never be coming to XP but had to backpedal on that later on?
>>
>>58542375
Reread that, I'm aware. I was asking if there's anything else yet.
>>58542392
As much as I'd like to think it would be released on Windows 7, lets be real, if they did release it for older versions, it would probably only be 8.1, and it would probably include so much spyware with the update that it wouldn't be worth using.
>>
>>58542386
Yeah that's right. Other computers on my network can't ping my computer (and I think the opposite is true too).

I thought that was how it worked too. I can connected to the server via the host computer through Windows Explorer, but it can't be found from other computers.
>>
>>58542419
List IPs and draw the network in paint.

>>58542392
DirectX10 was reverse-engineered back to XP (from Vista) by various community groups, not Microsoft.
I also feel that the hate for Vista was bigger than 7.
Oh and 7 is almost EOL anyway so what's the point.

>>58542404
>Reread that, I'm aware. I was asking if there's anything else yet.
I still don't know what you want to know.
Windows 10 has the UWP apps/games that don't run on 7, xbox, cortana, hello, touch, ...

My end goal is to be able to control my A/C (a Panasonic unit) from my RPi Zero.

I'm attempting to get the IR Transmitter wired as per Figure 2 here - http://www.raspberry-pi-geek.com/Archive/2015/10/Raspberry-Pi-IR-remote - however have had no success in seeing it lit. However, if I connect the IR LED to GPIO 14 and ground, I see it light up (via my camera). I should note that when I do this, it is permanently illuminated.

Am I doing something wrong, is the diagram incorrect? I am using a BC547 NPN transistor, and I believe I have the correct resistors.

Is there any way to move that little button you click in the bottom left corner on Windows to minimise everything to the other side?

Configure/disable firewalls

You can right-click your desktop and create a shortcut.
Then pin the shortcut to your taskbar.

>>

>Configure/disable firewalls
To do what? In what way?
>>
>>58542619
To allow pings and/or firewall traffic.
You're behind a NAT so a firewall on the PC & Laptop is pretty much useless anyway.
>>
>>58542610
>Firefox is pretty good right now :)
...I'll try the portable.

Do NATs affect LANs as well as WANs?
I thought they were only an issue when the internet is involved.
>>
Best way to install a linux distro on an android tablet?
>>
>>58542717
Yes the fact that your router is performing NAT doesn't change anything to the FTP setup.
All i meant was that you can safely disable the (windows) firewall to test and see if that is blocking anything.
>>
>>58542812
So my PC/Server's network settings wasn't set to private.
Firewall's settings are to block all incoming connections that aren't on the allowed list. How would I go about adding a local machine to that list?

I want to create and operate a server, most likely for storing files and accessing them remotely from local and remote networks. I'm experienced somewhat with windows server environment from a previous job, but I don't want to pay a licensing fee, and for funsies is like to make it hardware-agnostic anyway. What's a good place to start on this goal? I figure I get an older box (maybe derelict server hardware) and set up shop, but I don't know much about what software is our there for my intentions. If anyone could point me in the right direction then I would much appreciate it.

Learn how to use Virtual Machines and start learning Linux.
VMs will help you have snapshots once you have a stable configuration so you can rollback to it if ever you mess something up in the future.
Linux because it's easier to maintain there and some distros require very little resources.
