You really should go test out some cans at that price point but if you like HD600 and want to do a blind buy, I'd probably go for Elear. I've compared them against HD800S, HD800, HE1000, LCD2/3 among others and they're very middle-of-the-road and fun to listen to. Their most notable characteristic is their punchiness, they kinda sound like planars in that sense.

Kek'd.

1) SHIT BUILD QUALITY - it's crap. They will fall apart after 6 months of daily use.

2) SHIT PADS - you need to buy a set of expensive velour pads to make that shit comfy.

3) ZERO RESALE VALUE - if you get tired of them, the only way to get rid of them is to put them in a trash can.

only retards buy that shit. save fucking $100 and buy a good set of phones.

Best studio headphones for mixing? (I'll get some monitors next).

Gearslutz says HD800s are too colored.
>>
>>58494667
lack coloration isnt actually too much the main focus. youre better off going for something incredibly revealing like MDR7506's, though which are pretty flat, depending on what year/generation you have

HD600's are probably what I'd choose for pure flatness
>>
>>58493869
if you're going cost no object, i have to recommend stax. sr-007 or sr-009. they're considered the world's best among many "audiophile" forums AND the inner fidelity man himself, tyll. he's a relatively famous reviewer within the headphone community who owns/has tested hundreds of headphone models. if you're looking for near $1000-$2000, then i do highly recommend the hd800S. it's very neutral, has arguably the best sound stage and imaging in the game, and is exceedingly comfortable. if soundstage isn't your primary concern, hifiman he-6's are considered to be among the best planar headphones, though their build quality is lacking. they also require some insane amplification. also something to check out is the ether flow; a guy in san diego hand-makes headphones and they run about $1600, Tyll prefers them over the hd800S, but he generally likes darker headphones. check out innerfidelity for sure, but i think you can't go wrong with any of those.

Soundstage: stupid term to indicate sound positioning which is mainly dependent on frequency response.

V-shaped: enhanced low frequencies and high frequencies at the expense of mid freqeuncies (examples: Beyerdynamics' closed and open headphones).

Warm: overall balanced sound leaning with slight enhancement in low frequencies (examples: most of Sennheiser's open headphones).

Bright/cold: overall balanced sound with slight enhancement in high frequencies (examples: most of AKG open headphones).

>>
>>58496549
Imaging usually stands for accurate separation of different instruments and voices in a music track. Again, it's another term that audiophiles created but like sound stage it doesn't mean much. Both imaging and sound stage rely on the frequency response of a headphone.
Large sound stage is usually due to enhanced high frequencies, whereas a good imaging is usually due to a balanced sound.

is there any hack/mod to make undetachable headphone cables a bit sturdier at both sides (the headphone and the jack side) those are usually the parts where the cable starts to get fucked after time
>>
>>58496594
Something something drivers have an easier time moving.
As far as sound is concerned, no, it doesn't change shit at all, and if it did, a miniscule amount at most. There was an attempt to measure burn in with a K701 (?) and the differences could be chalked up to other factors such as the wear of the earpad.

I can't really see it being anything other than buyers remorse
>these $500 headphones are okay
>it might be better after a while
>wow these headphones really opened up
>>
>>58496691
not only that, but there was this hilarious moment when someone on /hpg/ came to complain saying burn in ruined his headphones and they sound way worse after.
However he also stated that that ended after like a day.
So he went in thinking it would do nothing or make it worse, and when it "did", he came to complain about it like he wanted to. After which people who still believed in burning in told him it's a permanent change.

Man burning in is a magical thing

>>
>>58496594
>have a scientific explanation
If you want to cut a bunch of tl;dr, it's all mental acclimation. The mind dominates over all the real physical changes.

If you want to look at it physically:

Any real "burn-in" from a change in material stiffness would be very bad.
Strain of a material of material is stable when subject to limited stresses, limited forces. Very large movements overwhelm the elasticity of the material and result in permanent deformation, eventually followed by tearing itself apart.

Earpads wear down, produces a less destructive change in measured response. Affects sealing and shape of cavity.
There's the changes that may result from heat, thermal compression or change in the the stiffness of the material from heating. These aren't permanent, and the device will revert back to normal once it cools off.

>>58493869
Stop thinking you can dodge it and use a parametric EQ. No, the pricey headphones aren't flatter, whatever other benefits they bring. Since you're probably going to obstinate and not do it:
HE-560 sort of works, but the construction is not inspired.

>>58498172

Recently got a well payed job, even bought an Asus Formula mobo which is supposed to have great sound. But I'm used to shitty mp3 earbuds. Mostly because I never had money as a student and the ones that cover the entire ear were too hot for me. Yesterday foam on my well-used, well-encrusted earbud headphones finally tore.

Time to gear up, but I have no idea what's good. I'd like an actual 7.1, not simulated, but most are plastic and will probably break as soon as I put them on. The only recomendation I got so far were Hyper X Cloud 2, but they're simulated 7.1.

Surround headphones are a gimmick, no serious headphones do surround.
You can find a couple of respectable brands here www.lastra.si (beyerdynamic, akg), shop.audiopro.si (audiotechnica, ultrasone)
These will usually let you try headphones out before you decide for you purchase, which is I believe very important.

Oh dear.
"Real" 7.1 does not happen on headphones. Headphones do not behave much like speakers that have definite localization in space. The effect that needs to happen is binaural virtualization, HRTF modeling.
There is no need nor any opportunity to have multiple channels into each cup. Just 2 channels are needed, and only 2 channels.

Oh no sweat.

Have you tried different headphones? No? do that.

Then I'd plug my headphones directly in to my sound card. If they sound correct and the issue is gone you've at least isolated it to your dac or amp or whatever.

Next I'd check the cable going to your dac or amp or whatever you're using. Swap that out.

If that doesn't work check the power to your dac or amp. Plug that shit in to a different outlet.

If it is still happening then it's happening inside your amp/dac. RMA or send off for service.

That's all I got mayne.

Remove the pads and check if there is debris or hair in one of the drivers. Otherwise you might need to open them and solder something. Might check online to see if it's a common problem with your particular model of headphones. By the way, what headphones?
>>
>>58499669
I just read some of his previous comments and it's happening to all his headphones. He's going to have to troubleshoot it and isolate the source.

If he hooks straight in to his pc and it happens then it's some issue with his onboard sound and we can do drivers/firmware and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't then it's whatever he has between his headphones and the PC.

uhhh disassemble and use canned air?

How you clean them is going to depend on what kind your'e using. If they are earbuds or iems there are probably screens to change. For ear wax I always just used a pin from some dress shirt to scrape out the hole in front of the screen. Of course if you clean your ears this cuts down the cleaning but eventually it's unavoidable.

>listening to a youtube video through a random pair of headphones/speakers are supposed to tell ppl what another set of phones sound like?
There isn't anything wrong with that idea, one transfer function imposed on another. There are a lot of practical issues.

>>58501153
>Just get some endgame phones and call it a day
There is no such thing as endgame past what you define.
This idea of one and done doesn't work when the devices are painful balancing acts of compromise, and you don't know what flaws you can accept from the start.

>>58500657
You seem to have some critically flawed ideas here.
Multiple drivers doesn't quite equal multiple sound locations. The spacing, group delay are not staggered as such.
>he said that he prefers actual 7.1 on headphones

My biggest issue was the thickness of the HM5 pads had a very noticeable effect on the sound, mostly reducing bass prominence which was why I had bought those headphones in the first place.
Those pads look much thinner but still comfy so I'd say go for it.

It would be disingenuous to call a 0.8-0.9 dB difference "quite a bit more".

Unless you want more than 96 dB (which causes damage to your ears after half an hour), E10K should be fine for those Beyers.

How could we make a very simple answer to all these "can it drive up to x Ohms" or other repeatedly asked things born of ignorance/inability to form a sensible question(is it worth it, upgrades, which one is better etc). While I would like to hand a thorough technical explanation of impedance to a person asking, I'm sure nobody would bother reading that stuff if they weren't genuinely interested(which I presume most people making a question like this aren't). Something that explains that a question itself doesn't make much sense and answers it or follows with a question/explanation if a simple answer is not possible.

Infographs are hip, maybe a FAQ infograph in the OP? I'm just skipping these threads looking at all the shiposting and reading the same questions all over again which I don't even bother trying to reply anymore.

>>58502509
GE doesn't measure distortion and the reviewer impressions are quite worthless. HD 800 doesn't really sound alike even if Ety Kids spikes around the 5-6 KHz region. Being close to HD 800 wouldn't necessarily be a good thing either and note that GE has measured two HD 800 units and HD 800S(korean website) which differ a little. The ER-4S firs their (old in-ear)target extremely well. It's +-2dB from 20 Hz to 15 Khz.

Guys I've been super fucking paranoid about some stuff lately.

First of all, some cables got caught on my chair and I through my o2 getting up from my desk. If I had damaged it would it be, in all likelihood, fairly obvious?

Second. I felt like I was hearing more surface noise on my records and decided to just buy a new stylus to be sure, but I feel like there is still more than usual. I had it hooked up to a friends KRK and when I turned the volume up there was a constant hiss on silent parts. Is the only way to make sure it's not my turntable to try the records on another one?

If I wanted more bass are the SE215 the only option in that price range?

The stupid questions:
>is it worth it
When would this be an appropriate question to ask someone? Especially someone who doesn't know about you?
>upgrades, which one is better etc
Straight "upgrades" are rare, as appealing as it might be to think that. In engineering, you have to balance all sorts of features, even if your budget is not restricted. People tend not to appreciate that - how to fix that?

>How could we make a very simple answer to all these "can it drive up to x Ohms"
The brief answer is to say that it doesn't work that way. But that's one question answered in an unsatisfying manner.
I really would rather describe everything in terms of voltage as it knocks out the impedance and amp stuff, plus some of the ill informed frequency response stuff. Almost certainly tl;dr.

How to distill it to something like the checklist?
>>
>>58507438
I know this is gonna sound dumb but the superlux 681 evo sound similar to the m50 with lot's of BHASS but incredible soundstage. Get new pads.

Build quality is not that great but who gives a shit? They're less than 40 bucks.

Try em. There's lots of mods you can do to mess with the sound signature as well if it's not totally up to your liking but stock they're pretty good. And with velours should be comfy as fuck

I asked some months ago for headphones with the comfort and sound of Audio technica's ATX-700s and 900s but without the wings since they fuck my hair and was suggested Philips SHP9500S. are these still a good suggestion? Budget is around $100 and these guys are $60 right now which is nice, i think $80ish normal.

Don't care about open or closed but I'm used to open. Past phones were senn 212s, then 555s, then the AT 700 and later 900x, 900 were definitely my favorites. I don't mind low bass

Question about the vmoda boompro mic. Never owned a headphone that has detachable cable so correct me if I'm wrong. You basically remove the cable to your headphone, attach the mic cable to your headphone, and attach the other end into your computer making the first headphone cable obsolete?
>>
>>58508529
>has the m50x always been bad
M50x have never been specifically good or bad. Its down to preference and usage. If you want' sharp V-shape for portable use, they're great. DT770's do what M50x do but better for home use, but they're much bulkier.

>Now everyone hates them and recommend the v-moda
I don't think i've seen the Vmodas recommended more than like once here. Especially not recently. Tonality wise, Vmodas are a dark headphone whereas M50x are a V-shape. And, the low end on the Vmodas is a fair bit cleaner, but bleeds into the mids a fair bit more.

They're somewhat different beasts, but at that price range they're a no-brainier to be compared.

>or is 4chan sucking zeo's dick and being contrarian again?
That's been going on ever since /hpg/ discovered the fucker.
>>
>>58508683
They'll have a similar level of clamp as the 555's.
>>
>>58510989
Yes, but if you have a dac/amp that you normally connect your headphones to you'll need an extension cable for the mic input.
>>
>>58507583
>But that's one question answered in an unsatisfying manner.
Yeah and this place is filled with those already. An end to them and answer to the ignorant is what I'm looking for. A checklist similar to the one you(?) made for DAC/amplifier questions would be better already but I imagine many questions would be better satisfied by a correctly filled purchase advice form, too. I'm having a hard time trying to think the content of the checklist and how to word it.

>Almost certainly tl;dr.
While that would be great for the wiki, I doubt it would work here as a copypasta answer.
>>
>>58509991
Impedance alone has almost no factor in needing an amp.
>>
>>58510989
Pretty much, but it only works if your computer has a combo 3.5 jack, otherwise you can just get a combo to audio/mic splitter, which is only a couple bucks.

With the quality of onboard audio these days, I'm questioning if I still need to be using my external headphone amp/DAC. I tried out the onboard audio on my Asus Maximus VII Hero and it drove my headphones just as well. Is my dedicated unit better or is it placebo audiofoolery at this point?

I get so much goddamn EMI using my external unit while the circuitry on my motherboard seems to isolate pretty damn well.

Budget is up to around £60/70 (britbong).
