I love using i3 but if literally anyone that might visit my house tried to do anything they'd be completely lost.
I haven't tried configuring LXDE yet but it's alright to use sitting infront of the TV, but everything is too small to use from the couch.

Why hate?
It's just outdated and something new is needed. By my understanding X was written to do a whole shitload of stuff (like being an actual graphics library) that it isn't used for at all now. So Wayland is just a more modern take on it with all the fat cut out.

The file picker is part of the GTK toolkit, it's NOT the filemanager you're using. It justs looks simliar because it's using the same theme.

There is currently no solution other than patching and recompiling and that only works for GTK2 programs. If you can't live without thumbnails, use KDE. Alternativly organize your files better or drap and drop from your file manager.

Well memed. Telemetry is data used by devs to fix errors and work on future security updates. It helps the users in the long run by not having to visit forums begging for solutions or manually reporting each problem.

Arch is "advanced and hardcore". Pretentious people install Manjaro because they think it will make them be cool for using Arch, but without the hassle.
THere are zero reasons to use Manjaro. They don't contribute anything worthwhile and there's nothing you can install on Manjaro that you can't install on Arch or other distributions.

again manjaro is a simplified arch so there is nothing hardcore about it. you are continuously projecting your feelings on a person who had a minor problem. also do not think that arch is hardcore or hardcore just because it compiles from source and is minimalist. if you want hardcore learn about the kernel and get involved with the development or contribute to some other project

"Build a number-guessing game that uses input validation (isdigit() function) to verify the user has entered a digit and not a nondigit (letter). Store a random number between 1 and 10 into a variable each time the program is run. Prompt the user to guess a number between 1 and 10 alert the user if he was correct or not.

create a loop that asks the user for input and simultaneously checks if the input it equal to the stored variable if they are the same the loop should break if you designed it correctly

What does this even mean? If you use the newest version of windows you are by definition using "bleeding edge", whatever that means. It's not like there is any newer version to use.

I bet you are some Arch pleb who thinks he is "bleeding edge". No you are not, arch just runs the most up to date RELEASES of software, like many many other distros. Maybe running everything from git HEAD is "bleeding edge", but no distro does that.

Question.

I'm on Debian testing and I have an A8 APU (on laptop obviously) which comes with and dedicated GPU (7470M), and I have the open source drivers installed.

Is there a way to check if the dedicated GPU is working or if it switch between both of the GPU's according to the load.

The GPU on the APU is a 7460G btw.

Former arch user here just switched to Debian. Should I go for testing or unstable on the desktop?
>>
>>58483473
Ubuntu is based on Unstable, so go figure.

It is not that unstable actually, but be prepared for stuff to break and spend some time fixing it. Although this depends a lot of what software and hardware you use.

Testing is actually very stable if you don't mess up anything, and its very bleeding edge if you ask me.

If you want a personal opinion, I would say go with testing.

>>
>>58483713
I don't think the BIOS knows about time zones. You can either set the BIOS clock to be your local time or to be UTC or whatever and it doesn't know.

The rest of your system however has some idea of what timezone the BIOS is set to. So if your BIOS clock was set based off of UTC but your system thinks it's your local time then your clock is going to be all fucked up.

It doesn't matter which you use though. Typically it's recommended to set your BIOS clock to UTC and then tell your system what your timezone is so it does the offset for you, unless you're dualbooting with Windows then setting it to UTC is recommended.
>>
>>58484032
>GPU passthrough without having to have two GPUs
Pipe dream, not even wayland can save us. It's a shame since I like to use Linux on native games and emulation. I'm really tempted to just dual boot, having two discreet GPUs just for the VM seems like a huge waste.

I don't think that's the issue anon. pls look at this:

>With both my Windows OS’ and the firmware update out-of-the-way, it was time for the real test: Arch Linux. I can’t say I’m surprised that not everything works right here, just a little disappointed. Upon boot-up, it presents a USB device error, where it fails to detect the charging station properly. More specifically, it detects, but is unable to assign an address to it. The error itself points to a power issue, but being that it starts properly in Windows, this is unlikely to be the real cause. Because of this, it does not start the mouse with the rest of the operating system. Disconnecting and reconnecting the charging station (with the mouse off) before turning on the mouse does allow it to start, but has to be done on every boot. Or you can boot with the charging station disconnected and plug it in after the OS fully boots. I decided to test this using a live ISO of Linux Mint that I had lying around, and it has the same issue. So, if you’re hoping it’s a distro dependent issue, I’m afraid you’re out of luck. There is one other small issue as well. While the mouse turns on after reconnecting the charging station, the cursor does not display on GDM until you press a key on your keyboard. Pressing a key to force the cursor to display doesn’t bother me. The detection issue alone, however, is enough to stop me from recommending the Sensei Wireless for any Linux user.

https://gadgtspot.com/2014/05/16/review-steelseries-sensei-wireless-laser-mouse/

I'm not sure if this was fixed since it's been so long since the issue was discovered...

New to Linux myself but I'd try verbose boot then googling where it hangs up.

Should be able to hit or hold shift before it starts loading, then Grub should come up and let you change it to verbose. I think.

Then just watch as it loads and google whatever line/log it's freezing or erroring on.

How the hell do I paste shit from the clipboard in vim?
>>
>>58488057
Gonna be honest with you anon, I always kind of disliked how the Linux clipboard works. Of course some people always say it's the best, but I think it sucks.

Linux basically has 2 clipboards, what you've highlighted and also the normal ctrl+c one.
Terminals usually only support the first one. So you just highlight some text (it's automatically copied) then you go to the terminal and middle mouse click (or shift+insert)

Another thing I hate about the clipboards is they do not persist when the applications close. So you can't open something up, copy text, close it, then paste. You have to open it, copy text, paste it somewhere, then close the application or you lose the copied text.

if you can afford to create your own custom software a system it's all well and good but how many companies can afford to do that?

Also It's odd they would choose GNU/linux for that given the licenses involved. I realise it's just the OS and not the actual software, but doesn't makign things for GNU/linux mean you have to share the source? it's why Sony used BSD for the PS4 OS, they could use all the free source code, change it up and never have to share it with anyone.

You can still very play videogames in linux it just takes some tinkering and it may not work perfectly, if the game does not have a native linux port already.

It just comes down to control over your operating system. This doesn't mean you have to use a distro that you configure from the ground up either, there are plenty of distros that work out of the box as easily as windows. In my experience I spent just as much time troubleshooting windows problems as I do with a easy distro like ubuntu.

just give it a go. but do it properly. use a distro as your main OS for at least a week before you make a final judgement on linux as a whole.

More control, configuration and more interactive. You can customize your Linux system however the way you want to: different themes, file managers, background processes etc to shape the system just the way you like it to be.

Furthermore it is easy to develop and deploy programs in Linux. You may have fancy code editor or IDE but Linux actually gives you direct access to the kernel itself. Win32 API cannot be altered. But every part of of your linux can be changed according to your need.

And lastly, I do not like where Microsoft is headed to these days. People like windows because of software availability, not because they like the OS itself.

I changed to Linux when windows 10 finally came out. I heard they are even adding spyware into compilers these days .

Lastly, Linux is enjoyable, as an OS as compared to windows. Can windows allow you to even use your favourite font? (Just for fun?)

What could be causing my computer to fail to read the boot loader sometimes?

After shutting down properly, there's a 50:50 chance I'll get a one of a series of errors or it'll boot up fine. It'll reset the bios settings, invoke rescue, or simply not recognize my OS boot. Resetting may work or just do it again.

If it does work, sometimes in the first 5-10 minutes of uptime it'll freeze everything. Or it'll hang, repeat the last audio like 5 times, and then freeze. Or it may work just fine for however long I decide to use it.

What should I try to whittle away at possible problems? Worked no problem with win10. Tried fedora, but it would drop internet connectivity after a couple minutes. Currently running Xubuntu Yakkety.

I'm most concerned that it will reset my bios after it hangs sometimes.

Does your fstab have UUIDs or just device names? That may be what's causing your boot problem.

When you're having the freezing problem, are you able to access a TTY (ctrl+alt+number)? If you're able to, there's something wrong with your X configuration.

Sorry I should have been more clear about the fstab. I wanted to know if your fstab had lines that started with UUID instead of /dev/sd*.

If your fstab had /dev/sd* instead of a UUID, your bootloader may try to find root in the wrong partition. If your fstab file uses UUIDs, then there's a bigger problem.

I don't know how to fix the hanging, but it sounds like you had a kernel panic.
>>
>>58493139
>lines that start with /dev/sd*
Aside from the leading comment field:
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
/dev/mapper/xubuntu--vg-root / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /boot was on /dev/sda2 during installation
UUID=a2e01d56-5b3b-484b-a686-ca10e39d071f /boot ext2 defaults 0 2
# /boot/efi was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=B5AB-C5B7 /boot/efi vfat umask=0077 0 1
/dev/mapper/xubuntu--vg-swap_1 none swap sw 0 0

They appear to start with UUID's aside from xubuntu--vg-root. This is also obviously from it currently working. I don't know if it's different when it would crash/hang or if that's even something that happens at all. This is the most stable it's been since I finally committed to going full linux.

Installed mpd+ncpp and sounds works, but Voulme says "n/a" using alsa.

How to fix?

They may cause a kernel panic but I am not 100% sure...

after a year and a half of using Linux and becoming an advanced user I think it's time I actually install the Gentoo operating system for real, i'm not memeing this time, how long does it usually take to install gentoo and simple things like KDE, Wayland or X, and whatnot to be a usable desktop operating system?
>>
>>58494288

Does this "n/a" happen with other applications besides the ones you've listed?
>>
>>58494288
fixxed by using "pacman -R pulseaudio-alsa"
>>
>>58494339
Depends on your CPU
>>
>>58494424
I have a Haswell second gen i5 with two cores and 1.6 Ghz clockrate
compiling GCC takes 2 hours
compiling Linux kernel takes 1 and a half hours
>>
>>58494433
Gentoo KDE will take a long ass time
>>
So what are your opinions on fedora (for a workstation)?

I avoided it for a while, but I'm trying it in a VM and the configuration of things out of the box seems pretty sane. The package manager is slow as balls, though, but I can live. Not sure if there are any gotchas.
>>
>>58494433
Not him, but you'll be fine. I roll with Gentoo and have a dual-core Duo with a 2.9Ghz clock rate. Compiling X takes around 15 minutes.

I don't use KDE, so I don't know how long it would take but considering you install all of its packages I'm estimating ~1-4 hours.
>>
Just started using Ubuntu today (yea I know)

Anyway when I uninstall software in the Ubuntu Software Center, it doesn't disappear for some reason. The program is actually uninstalled but still appears in the Ubuntu Software Center as installed.

Is this just because the USC is shit?
>>
>>58494455
my laptop has a 5 year old i7 and it takes longer to download things than compile them.
>>
>>58494476
I'm actually trying to use Wayland instead and use the XWayland backend for X apps, Wayland takes 30 seconds to compile so that makes things a bit faster
>>
can someone say which libraries i need to run this https://github.com/benchen71/epub-metadata-editor in wine/playonlinux?

i recommend not using genkernel and optimizing your use flags
>>

Looks like you might be OK with running "winetricks dotnet40" if the DotNetZipLib-v1.9.1.6.chm file is anything to go by...

hello /fglt/.

which distro would offer an experience most similar to macos/os x? i might have to switch to a windows computer in the future after my mbp dies (thx apple for shit new mbp!) and instead of purely running windows i figured i'd try linux considering i already got used to a unix system

or, at least, what de/wm etc would i have to install for a similar experience?
>>
>>58494770

Can you get us a screenshot of a newer version of Mac OS X to compare? I think I know what you're looking for but it helps to have visual aids...

Here's Sierra's desktop with Finder open, though I'm currently using El Capitan.
>>
>>58494849

Hmmmm. Well, I think any distro that carries the latest version of either KDE or GNOME3 will have what you want. I use GNOME3 and there is an extension that allows me to move the dash to the bottom-center portion of my screen so you can have it like the Docker (I think it's called that?) menu like Mac OS X does. KDE should have something similar as well...
>>
>>58494857
Right, I'll google around. Thanks.
>>
>>58494857
I believe it's called Docky. Docker is something else.
>>

There's also Deepin: https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=deepin

Hm. I'll look into it either way.
>>
>>58494862

Docky is it? You might be right...I don't keep up much with Macs so there's that.
>>
>>58494874

Some distros carry just the desktop environment so you can get the DE without the OS. Arch has deepin in its official repos and if you want easy mode Arch just get Arch Anywhere or use Antergos...
>>
>>58494884
Aha. I was just reading about Antergos in the wiki link. Thanks.
>>
>>58494875
Oops I misread your post. I thought you were talking about the Linux equivalent, which is Docky. I've never used a Mac so I don't know what it's called there.
>>
>>58494849
gnome3 with arc theme is pretty close.
>>
>>58494890

I am not sure but I think you might be able to set Deepin as your DE with a netinstall but I am not sure as it's been a long time since I had to install Antergos so YMMV.
>>
>>58494896

Well, Linux does have Docker: https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/docker/

but that's some sort of packaging program...
>>
>>58494914
Yeah that's what I mean, Docker was not the name of application he was looking for. Sorry, my posts weren't very clear.

How are you able to view it? I am having issues getting in there in Firefox and Chromium. Something about the secure connection failing...

QUESTION!

is it still considered safe if I use windows 10 as my host OS and do all my important stuff in a mint VM? is it possible to spy on my VM through windows and should I straight out install windows on my host?
>>
>>58495305
If you are that paranoid just install it onto a USB and use it from there.
>>
>>58495341
thats not the point, when I'm using a linux vm for privacy it doesnt make sense if windows can spy on me anyway, thats why I'm asking if its possible
>>
>>58495403
well i can't say for sure, but given their track record with spying an telemetry I would definitely assume the worst.
>>
>>58495229
>>58495208

Holy shit, what a contrived way. Use the libinput X driver and just toggle one simple option.

$ xinput list-props 11
Device 'SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad':
...
libinput Natural Scrolling Enabled (288): 0
libinput Natural Scrolling Enabled Default (289): 0
...

how can i rice my Gentoo GNU/Linux?
>>

by having KDE and not ricing it, it looks professional and good by default, it's a product
>>
Should I fall for the meme and install Gentoo?
How long does it take to compile everything?
>>
>>58495850
Yes, I'm doing it tommorow, depends, if you are a super fucking busy guy 1 week, if you are neet tier or have all day, almost a day, it's worth it, do not go the genkernel route and make sure you read the entire portage section to get make the best out of your system
>>
>>58495883
Well, looks like I'm gonna make more coffee and stay up installing it then.
I don't have shit to do besides that, so I should be ok.
>>
>>58495883
Actually, kind of a dumb question, but can you install it without Ethernet connection? Can you use wifi?
Because I'm not able to directly connect to my router.
>>
>>58495928
you need to use a Live-CD then, e.g ubuntu for Internet (if you use WLAN)

qterminal is nice.
Doesn't mpv already work? I thought it doesn't have a dependency on X in the first place, I ran it from a VT once, for god's sake.
>>
>>58478615
X is just old and designed for a different thing than what it's doing right now. And you can't fix it without breaking every single X application. So we need a new thing, doing exactly what we need it to do instead of X.
Unfortunately, wayland itself isn't that great at the moment, but maybe it will mature.

>>58491627
I'm the kind of persona who enjoys tinkering with Linux a lot.
But honestly, if you asked me why I stuck to it, two answers: it's fast and the programs are free.
It's a lot faster than Windows, even with a shit configuration. Which means I don't have to wait half a minute while Windows opens a goddamn task manager just because some program froze.
And I can just rely on package manager for my programs, so I don't have to bother with pirating and wonder whether there are virtuses in this particular release or not. Package managers are a godsend. Also, I actually think the average programs themselves are overall better than Windows ones, even the shit ones. Exception is the ones that are hard to make and that compete with a powerful company product that is the standard, like GIMP or LibreOffice, but even they're decent overall, and all the different music players, "fuck around with my UEFi" or "mount youtube as a file system" especially are better than on Windows.
Also, I like the fact that I can actually debug problems. I would rather the system tell me everything that it suspects went wrong and then leave me on my own than it try to fix a problem by a complicated algorithm, fail and leave me on my own without any information on what even happened.
>>
>>58495928
you can but the first thing you need to install is wpa supplicant. i did this and the only think that happens is downloads are slower obviously. also you might want to look into a stage4 tar ball
>>
>>58495911
also make sure you read the environment variables it is something that people skip because the system can technically function fine with configuring them
