It's pretty garbage by today's standards but people are harder on it than it deserves. Gazelle is almost a decade old at this point, and was only developed in people's spare time for the purpose of getting things done. Even with all its problems, it was a huge step up from what we had before it.
For all the messiness and ridiculously broken shit, there are a lot of things that gazelle does perfectly fine, and it's surprisingly segmented.
This is why ventures to create a new gazelle alternative from scratch usually fail. Tracker developers do not have unlimited free time to pour into a brand new 100 KLOC project, and especially not when they're reinventing swaths of features that gazelle already does just fine. They could just be working on incrementally replacing the components of gazelle that work like shit, and have a working product the entire time instead of trying to rewrite everything in one go.

There's also an issue of getting acclimated. You can't try to replace gazelle until you understand it inside and out, and once you finally understand all its weird shit, it doesn't seem that bad and you feel less desperate about replacing it.

I routinely work 50+ hour weeks and travel a lot for my work, and I'm PU/Elite on PTP, BTN, and PTH.

If you're actively interested in the content and don't mind seeding 24/7, you can definitely climb the ladder. It's a slow process though. And this isn't the best time for it, as many trackers have shut down recruitment in the wake of What going down. Hopefully sites like BIB and AHD reopen recruiting soon, as they are the best ways to get into PTP, BTN, or HDB.

I don't, I spend ages on Goodreads and random reviews agonising over whether or not I'm going to pirate the book. Then I look it up in Warosu to see if people hate it. And if it's not available on book torrent sites I have a little cry.

When I make book lists I look up all the titles first to make sure I'm not downloading shit and filter out the audiobooks and make sure I get the correct retail version.

In a way it's more cumbersome than going to an actual bookshop where I can just stay in the shop and pick up and flip through every book in there.
