I have a problem that I just cant seem to solve, but I hope someone here might know what's up.

I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium that I wanted to fuck around with, so I installed a few Linux distros on it. The one that works best is Debian stable with LXDE, however it required a lot of fucking around in Xorg to get the resolution to work properly.

Now the only thing that I just cannot seem to fix is 3D hardware acceleration. This thing uses an ATI Rage 128 card, I have tried to put older MESA drivers, multiple boot commands, disabling KMS, enabeling it etc. but I just cant seem to get 3D running, so it relies on software rasterising. (Pic related, ignore username and machine name pls, its a meme).

Do any of you know what I could do to get 3D acceleration running? I want to try DOOM on it.

Thanks

I want to play BF1942, Desert Combat specifically. I've used playonlinux and wine for other games in the past and it always turns out to be a god damn cobbled together mess. Would it not be easier to just use a virtual machine, especially since the game is so old? If so, which virtual machine software?

I used to be a /pol/ack, but during my /pol/ phase I completely came out of touch with linux and programming in general. I came back to it after I realized that I was becoming borderline schizo and hadn't accomplished anything worthwhile with my political shitposting. Now I just don't care at all about politics, except if it interferes with my hobbies. Also I took the political compass test for fun a few days ago and I was one square from the left and three squares from the bottom, so ya I guess I am a commie and an anarchist now. I previously installed the infinality font repo in Fedora 25 and installed several packages that I think overwrote the default system packages. I've removed the repo from /etc/yum.repos.d/ and now would like to remove all the packages and replace them with their original versions. I tried to remove some of them manually but it seems like several system components (like lightdm, etc) now depend on the packages installed from that repo and thus dnf wants to remove those programs too. How can I remove these packages and reinstall the original versions, or at least not have other packages depend on them (they are mostly just fonts).

>>
>>58453474
No, if the shebang points to #!/bin/bash the script will execute as /bin/bash. (Provided the bash package is installed on your system. You can keep it installed and still use zsh)

If you're writing scripts, you should try to use /bin/sh as much as possible, but you probably don't.
>>
>>58453474
Yes.
But they specify which interpreter they need with the first line.
#!/bin/bash
Will always be run by bash, and so on.
So you don't have to worry about that.

Is there some reason I can't run two rsync jobs at the same time with cron?

I had them both in seperate bash scripts and get cron to run them every hour to copy different files to my home server, but for whatever reason, only the first one ever runs, I then decided to put them both in the same bash script and again, only the first one runs, changed the order of them, again only the first one runs.

Can rsync not do two jobs at the same time, do I have to set one job at 0 and the other at 5 or something?

I'm trying to mount an iso image of Pokémon Play It! that I torrented, but it's not going very well.

This is what I'm try to do:
$ LC_ALL=C sudo mount PokemonPlayIt\!.iso pokeplay
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so.

dmesg | tail:
[32849.407393] FAT-fs (loop0): bogus number of FAT structure
[32849.407399] FAT-fs (loop0): Can't find a valid FAT filesystem

According to the comments on the torrent site, the iso is fully functioning (and yes, I've verified that it got downloaded correctly).

Hello, /fglt/

I've been using FreeBSD since back in 2001, and despite shitposting a lot about how it's superior, that's not why I'm here.
I'm here because back then I tried Debian and what really drove me away from it was the lack of documentation - but since that's obviously changed since, I was thinking of throwing a Linux distribution in bhyve and trying it out.
Here's my problem though - what do I use if I want something built from scratch (ie. not based on LTS version of another Linux), has a rolling release model, and also doesn't have systemd (I have reasons for not wanting to get into it, but suffice it to say I know how sysvinit works and I can deal with that without having to learn something that I don't agree with the philosophy, technical aspects of or personalities behind).

tldr; Please /fglt/, recommend me a distro that is built from scratch, has rolling releases, and doesn't have systemd.

Linux From Scratch fits all of those.
Gentoo/funtoo fits the bill too.

with LFS you have more freedom since you can use tools from whatever distribution you want, since it's a framework not a distro.

gentoo/funtoo are distros

No, it's actually the Ubuntu user space using proprietary software to translate Linux system calls to Windows ones. Pretty neat stuff; I'd use it if there weren't so many reasons not to use Windows.

>>
>>58462364
Don't most non-terrible distros bundle tweak tool with the desktop?
>>
>>58462416
Gross. I hate that shit.

I always thought they should just bundle the tools as its own separate package.

Maybe portage has just spoiled me, so I'm not sure if other package managers can handle that level of flexibility. But at least with portage they could just have the tools bundle as a default flag set in original package, but you'd have the option of passing on them too by turning it off.
>>
>>58462476
I mean tweak-tool is a separate package like baobab is a separate package, but they get installed in the default gnome-desktop group that distros use. You can always go gnome-core to get the desktop and no apps.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Any anon got Wayland /sway to work on a nosystemd install?

4chan IS a trolling playground
-It does not enforce peer reviewed, citeable posts
-we all /b/ with different topics :D
-Post anything you feel like, no one knows what you posted the next day (feel free to be a dumb ass shit poster)
-lack of proper moderation
-lack of proper archives

4chan was never meant to be taken seriously. It's ironic when the newfags say otherwise

How would they know I'm using GNU/Linux, when my user-agent says I'm using Chrome on OS X?
>>

Do you have a package manager that updates from some repository? Then they know.

Stop making me paranoid. ;_;
Will torify(1) help updating my packages anonymously?

sure, but make sure they're signed if you're doing that. Anyway your IP and likely your real name is already tied to using linux.
>>
>>58464866
Tor is only 100% secure when the exit node is also in the Tor network, but since distro repos don't have .onion services, the exit node can manipulate what you install and track you (the last proxy you were using).

tl;dr Just forget that idea.
>>
>>58464887
>manipulate what you install
welp not that because of package signing (every good package manager should do this)
and tracking doesn't work because you're using Tor

I need a gnu/linux distribution that meets these requirements:

>has to be really fast
>has to be noob friendly

I installed Mint with Cinnamon and I didn't liked it. It's not fast.
I know I don't have the latest hardware but it's not a toaster pc neither: OC 3.5ghz core 2 duo, 4 gbs of ram, GTX 260. Windows 7 x64 works perfectly on it without ever making me worry about performance (like I would open all the tabs on the browser and all the programs I wanted without compromising speed)
Mint was all sluggish and took a lot of time to log in and the performance was worse overall compared to windows. Scrolling and tab changing wasn't smooth neither on the browsers I tried (all the major ones)

Can I also ask for a distro reccomendation?
Ever since I abandoned my X200 that was running some ancient Fedora, it all went downhill. I seem to be cursed.

>all kinds of current Fedoras:
>KDE5 always crashes when I plug in an external monitor, often taking the whole system with it
>Opensuse Leap:
>Same as with Fedora, but I only get a "plasma crashed" popup and my panels vanish, but the system keeps running.
>Suspend often does not work
>ubuntu:
>It killed my windows partition on install, since asking the user how he wants to partition his HDD is obviously to scary for ubuntu users
>Constantly having to fight the OS to get anything done
>apt-get has a retarded syntax
>CentOS:
>finally I am at home!
>yum update - lol, no wifi for you anymore
>next try - works for 3 months, but when I decide to get my mobile broadband to run, it develops the plug in monitor - system is kill bug

What the hell?
Is my thinkpad cursed?
Any other distro I could try?
>>

Did you have the proprietary nvidia drivers installed
>>

Just use fedora and don't let /g/ meme you into KDE
KDE is a buggy mess that spends more time segfaulting than being useful.
>>
how can I install Times New Roman in xubuntu?
i tried installing ttf-mscorefonts-installer but the font still doesn't show up in LibreOffice.
>>
Why is hardened linux something you have to patch in? Why don't they just include all those protections in the default kernel? If it was always like that then all software would be written considering it and it would easier for everyone no?
>>
>>58466498
>Just use fedora and don't let /g/ meme you into KDE
/g/ didnt meme me into anything, I have been using KDE since back in the day when I actually bought a box full of DVD's for SUSE Profesional 9.whatever.
And KDE4 got really good at around 4.10 or something and KDE5 shows promise, but it definitely is at an alpha stage right now.
so yes, I would love to leave, but where too?
gnome is looking as shitty as it works, and I have to install all kinds of hacks to get it semi useful and it doesn't even ship with a file manager.
that ubuntu thing?
Even more retarded and user hostile than gnome.
and cinanom and mate just feel weird and too hobbiest.
And I'm not autistic enough to go for something like i3.
