What's best/fastest way to copy HDD over to new one?
Copy & paste?

Old laptop reached the end of it's life, and can no longer boot up with dead optic drive and can't boot from USB.

1.Get it it out and plugged to a newer laptop and boot live session of linux and copy over to external HDD.
2.Get it out and put it in enclosure/rack and copy over to external HDD.
>>
>>58424341
External to external is usually slower.

It's an internal HDD.
So option one would be better, But option two would be easier.

Then what about the method of copying?
Just use copy & paste? or use rsysnc?
Or is there is better way?

so i've given up on the 4k meme but not the g-sync meme. i see almost no reason not to get the PG348Q over the other two. they all look good, but if i'm paying this much for a monitor i might as well get the one with the biggest screen real estate.

p.s. i am not interested in the 4k g-sync whatever monitor asus rog just announced. it'll probably cost two fortunes as much as my computer and will still not do 4k games well.

On Windows 7, is there a certain program or utility I should consider for backing up files on my computer to another drive?

I would just copy and paste what I need, but the reason I ask is because I've done copy and paste on Windows 7 before and ran into issues where Windows won't copy a folder or file because it says the directory name is too long or something like that. When it runs into that error too, it completely pauses the copy and paste process and when it completely stops, I'm not sure what files still need backing up after that.

The Xeon works great, and at significantly lower temperatures than the 920, but having to clear the CMOS each and every time I power it down is a pain in the ass.

That aside, since I'm constantly having to clear the CMOS, about how long will it take before it's completely brokenfucked?

2k is not an official spec. There's no exact legal definition for it. It's just come to be a shorthand for WQHD. I've never seen any marketing use 2k to describe anything. It's just something people have come to use. I wish it would get adopted universally. Adopting an easy and consistent term for people who don't need to go up to 4k would be really nice

No such thing, since the "best" keyswitches are the ones you prefer.

There is no best mechanical keyboard - it depends on what you're looking for in terms of keycap (PBT, ABS or alternatives, with or without lettering) and casing material (plastic, aluminium or alternatives), switch type (cherry, topre, alternatives, not to mention actuation force and type (clicky, tactile or linear)) and many other factors - and finally size matters too.

My keyboard is a 66key mini-keyboard with blank PBT keycaps, cherry mx gray keys, and an aluminium casing.

I have a DVD full of private nudes from early-mid 2000s. Had it stashes for years. Long story short now it's like in two parts like pic related. I've still kept both pieces.

How likely is it, that somewhere in the future there will be some advanced device that will be able to, I don't know, just scan the two pieces and put at least some of the data back together? Or anything like that. Be imaginative.

I'm aware you could possibly attempt to do it even now if you have the proper time/budget. Align the pieces exactly right and you could probably get something out of it (?).

But I'm not that desperate. Would just be cool to someday at 50 or 60 get to take a look at those nudes again all nostalgic. How likely is this?

When I visit a website that uses the Helvetica font, for me it appears as System Sans-Serif. That's because windows doesn't come with Helvetica right?

But then why would web designers use that font? Is it really worth having a part of your users see the "good" font and a presumably large part of your users see the default System Sans-Serif?

Who the fuck says "Got my new windows install, better go install various fonts now"? Helvetica is a popular?? font but I'm looking at a css framework (Tachyons) and it has styles for obscure fonts that I never heard of like Avenir. In simple words, the number of sectors left that haven't died from write wear is the lifespan of a SSD.

Bigger SSD = More sectors = more lifespan.
Better NAND= more resistant sectors = longer lifespan.

>Size of the writes

Writing 5 1gb files would be the same as writing 1 5gb file. It is the drive's total amount of writing that matters, like the number of miles a car has. Leaving free space on your drive helps, because it gives the drive a chance to disperse the writes more evenly. So say you had a 120 gb drive and you stuck a 105 gb file on it, and just left it there for years. The remaining 15gb would wear out much faster from overuse. But you really don't have to worry about any of this anyway. Leaving some free space is just good because it can improve performance

Effectively using 100% of a processing unit's power at once is really difficult and only something that benchmarks and very, very optimized games do. There could be many possible reasons that the GPU isn't fully utilized.

Consider the simple example of a 4 core CPU. You can run a single threaded program as intense as you want but you still won't get more than 1/4 usage.

Help me figure out what's best for me. I'm thinking of having 3 OSes on my SSD. I'm running one Linux distro for testing tools, one for casual use(I'm looking for an alternative to Linux Mint to play around with), and Windows XP.

Would it be better to have all three on one hard drive, or should I split them? I only have 1 SSD, so the other OS would have to run on an HDD. This is making me think that I should just put them all on the same drive. Is there any issue with doing so?

Also, what's something relatively similar to Linux Mint in terms of accessibility? I'm basically looking for Debian with non-free shit and multimedia working out the box. I don't feel like installing firmware and shit.

Not true Anon, physical layout is not the same as virtual layout on an SSD due to wear levelling. You can even increase SSD life by under-allocating the filesystem, so say you have a 1TB disk and allocate 100GB of it for your filesystem and don't touch the rest, you'll get ten times the life out of your flash because given enough time your data will be spread evenly across the whole disk.

Learn C.
Don't wait for your courses to teach it to you, go grab a copy of learncthehardway (just google a download for the pdf), and get your ass into gear.
You should be using Linux, an ubuntu MATE or Linux Mint virtual machine is fine to get you started.

No way this haven't been done before. I need an easy solution usable by not savvy people.

Sounds like a plan. I've found some books on Amazon I'll be buying as well. I've been using Ubuntu, debian, Kali and a bit of arch so far. Really love immersing myself.

Maybe custom firmware for your DVD ROM drive, and have it focus on and read each track while turning the disc very slowly.

Or make a DIY microscope made from a DVD player,
plus some form of rig to move the parts. Scan the two halves in, stitch it back together and then write drive emulation software to read it in yourself.

Also rip to FLAC so you don't ever have to do it again. Also if you want to upload those CDs anywhere use ExactAudioCopy instead and keep the rip log.

I installed wine on my mac and when I first ran it I got some weird errors but I also mistyped the .exe I was trying to run so I thought that was the problem.

I closed them and fixed the line and now nothing is working and I think it's becuase I closed those errors, but I can't get them to appear again.

What do?

Just write in Markdown and use Notepad. You can convert to HTML quite easily

Example source:

https://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/index.text

Run it through markdown.pl and it converts to HTML and looks like this:

https://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/
>>
>>58431882
That has tools for editing code, not necessarily the text itself. I think I'll just learn a bit of HTML and save my notes as HTML files. I know I can do what I want in there. Thanks anyway.

That's why I said "some kind of" database. Some programming is not a problem but I'm not going to write a client from scratch.

So I've been using this generic HP mouse for a while, but my joints hurt after long use because it's too small.

MS Intellimouse Optical. The one like pic related. Or a razer deathadder. I've almost got bigger hands than you and both of those are comfortable. On a side note, ever used one of the old Xbox "duke" controllers? They are great.

if you're using oneechan then you need to check the Show Board Banners in it

The MS mouse seems to be out of stock here. Are all deathadders equal in size or is there a specific one I should look for? I don't want to spend too much btw.
I found the duke to be more comfortable than the 360 controller t.bh. And certainly better than the playstation controller.
