From last thread

Have any of you been following upcoming phone rumors?

I have an upgrade in March, looking to trade in my s7 edge.. Saw the s8 leak and looks like shit. Was wondering if any of you knew of a good rectangular shaped phone coming out. Im not really a fan of the curvy samsungs anymore

Doesnt have to be 100% rectangle, just not as curvy and round as a galaxy

Goddammit, did not notice new thread.

I'm not smartphone savvy. All my shit was gotten free from someone else when they upgraded. I need a phone now with service for a delivery job. I need to be able to use GPS and make calls/text first and foremost, and for personal use I want to be able to browse the web without the browser being shitty and play music without the player being garbage (MP3s). I need a larger screen. Price limit is $300 (not counting tax). I live in the US (TN). Needs to be Android. I was thinking about getting the Huawei Mate 2, the Galaxy J7, or the Moto G Plus, 4th gen. Please advise.

Is it safe buying chinkphones from aliexpress? Feedbacks include refurbished phones being sold as new (1 star feedbacks for RN3P 2gb in Eternal and HK Goldway shops). Is it better buying from banggood instead although it is more expensive by $10 - $20?

I ask again:

I will have to flash and unlock unofficially a rn3p later today, is the following step-by-step guide I've saved still correct ? I hope the formatting doesn't fuck up, and sorry, but can't search right now, expecting guests any moment now.

unlocking bl:
- download global stable firmware (the one you can fastboot) & download mi flash tool & adb files & unlocked emmc_appsboot.mbn
- extract global stable firmware into folder - copy emmc_appsboot.mbn into miui-firmware/images/ (it will replace the old one)
- now boot phone into edl mode (just vol down and power then plug USB cable in - led will blink red constantly if your in edl)
- open mi flash, point it to the miui-firmware - click flash (everything will be erased, even internal storage, so backup stuff to sdcard/PC)
- after its done press and hold vol & power down while booting for 15 seconds to reboot back into fastboot
- open adb folder, should have fastboot shit aswell, open CMD in folder as admin
- fastboot oem unlock-go
- wait for device to unlock (device will reboot and show a mi logo with a progress bar)
- once progress bar goes away, your unlocked.
- press vol down & power for 15s to reboot to fastboot again
- flash twrp
- vol up and power to boot to twrp
- flash cm13-firmware.zip
- flash cm13-date.zip & pico-open-gapps.zip
- reboot and done.

there are bazillion copy-paste threads from pajeets with external links, which I don't trust. Someone done this recently, please point to a tested way. thx

sup /g/ents, gettin pretty tired of the non-support in USA Xiaomi memery with my Redmi Note 3 Pro. Think its finally time to get something with proper US support.

Is there anything as good as the RN3P with good USA support (taking into account cheap RNP3 price, etc)?

Main things I care about:
-SD card slot
-long battery life (or I guess quick charge, etc like the OnePlus 3T)
-fingerprint scanner (I love using it....but I guess its optional)
-Good processor

I'm with cricket wireless but gonna switch to T-Mobile soon

After using a Galaxy Note 3 since late 2013, I just decided to upgrade to a Nexus 6P last night. I hear a lot of good things about it, but considering how it's a year old phone already, I'm having second thoughts about the future. (I'm stuck with Google phones because I'm switching to Project Fi.)

Is there good reason to cancel my 6P in favor of a Pixel, or am I better off waiting for a 2nd gen? Do you think that the Pixel's guts and future Android updates will create more of a disparity between it and the 6P? I haven't shopped for one of these things in a few years so I'm not sure of the logic.

Pic not really related, just my Note 3 screen.

>Post a mini-review of your phone
okay.

I have the galaxy s7.

One time the GPS fucked up for about a day until I had time to look up how to fix it. Then I fixed it. No problems with that since.

It is a normie meme smartphone of 2016. It runs well, it does stuff a modern phone should do at the speed a modern phone should do stuff.

Some cool features of this phone: Gear VR if you are into that is directly compatibibibible with this phone. Fingerprint scanner. The camera is better than my last phone which was the LG G3. It came with a female usb to male micro usb adapter so you can connect two phones to each other so that you can take your contacts and stuff from your old phone and put on new phone.

This phone has good battery life. It lasts a long time. I have a power brick on my person most of the time so I don't really pay attention to how fast the battery drains. It charges from 0-100 in ~1hr10min.

While standard with smartphones, I am not used to the lock button and volume buttons being on the sides. The lg G3 had them both on the back. Which was far superior.

So basically I got rid of all home screens and any icons or widgets. Start clean. I chose a good wallpaper that I wanted to use and then built from there.
I disabled the dock and page indicator.
I then went into the apps and widget settings in nova. I scrolled to the bottom and went into hide apps. Ticked off apps I would never in a million years use. Then I went back a step, and tapped drawer groups. Here's where you can set up tabs and folders. I love folders in the app drawer so that's what I did. One of my folders from here is actually on the home screen ( the social icon to the right).
Then I changed the desktop grid size. This is personal preference.
Then I dragged 3 icons to the desktop. This is totally up to you again, for me it was phone, messaging apps, and social apps (ie clover).
After that I held down on each icon, and changed the actual icon to be one from the Min Icon collection. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ryanmkelly.me.min&hl=en
In nova settings, I disabled any home screen icon labels.
Then I just slapped on the default clock widget. But I'll be changing it soon anyways, so put in whatever widget you love.
In nova settings again, in gestures, I changed swipe up from home screen to open up the app drawer. This way I don't have to actually swipe from the bottom of the screen like pixel launcher. Swipe down should by default be notifications. Change whatever gestures into whatever else you use.

That's pretty much it. Really look into nova settings and play around with it all to find something you love. After all, it's your phone!

For any automation tasks, I use Automate by llamalabs. Other people use Tasker but personally automate is all I need. Again it's an app you really do need to play around with for yourself.

how likely am i to brick my device doing this?
>>
>>58425057
Nah, but I'd rather it didn't wrestle with my hose
>>
>>58427405
If you actually follow the steps and have half a brain, you can't brick your device. There can be really long boot times when you get through the first cycles though, and this is where people panic, restart their device, and start fucking with shit. So patience is also needed.

Once you get through the first link, there's another comment in that thread by OP, and he links to a video (iirc) showing you how exactly to enable root. Keep in mind, once you enable root, you can't use apps like snapchat. So if you want to use snapchat, sign into snapchat first and then enable root.
>>
I'm enjoying my new mi mix, no other phones I could find in this price-range had the feature I was looking for (gold-plated rim for the camera and fingerprint sensor).
>>
>>58427450
why cant you use snapchat if you enable root?
>>
>>58427570
snapchat uses safetynet, which is basically this measure that developers can use that tests whether or not a device is rooted and/or boot unlocked.
for example android pay and banks use it. that's sort of reasonable I suppose, as they're financial institutions.
but pokemon go and snapchat don't accept rooted shit for whatever reason, so their apps don't work on rooted devices
people have used workarounds, but they tend to be patched relatively quickly.

Switching from T Mobile to att with my s7, i can root the s7 now right?
>>
>>58427632
yeah that's probably a major reason why, but it's a huge hassle to so many rooted users who don't even give a fuck about saving snaps, but are still forbidden from using the app at all

pokemon go is even worse, they have no good excuse as to why they're so anal about this shit, especially now that the fad has died. I bet even the $10 mario game is going to come with safetynet as well.
>>
>>58427676
yea its stupid..

I think the mario game and the pokemon go game has different devs, mario is nintendo, pokemon go is niantic and pokemon co.

Your note 4 lags on emulators? You mean galaxy or redmi note 4? Because my galaxy note 4 runs every single emulator and latest "muh grafix" game on the playstore just fine, however i am using a debloated stock rom and custom kernel so that might be it, try flashing one yourself.

As for how far are smartphones in terms of emulation, every single relevant old school (sixth gen and earlier) console can be emulated 100% on phone, same with the GBA, DS, PS1, PSP and Nintendo 64, the rest are either buggy or laggy as fuck.

I play parasite eve 2 and pokemon black 2 on my moto g4 play at work and it runs just fine (4G LTE+stock android+decent battery+cheap=perfect for the nigger-friendly area i work in), keep in mind that this is a SD410/2GB ram device while your N4 is a SD801/3GB ram, roughly three times as powerful, it shouldnt struggle on anything at all.

>>
>>58429494
unlocked phones are just phones that aren't tied to a carrier
you bring the unlocked phone to any carrier, and get a plan of your choice, they'll typically be way cheaper than the phone + plan deals.

http://willmyphonework.net/
also talking to support for whatever carrier you're going with (or just finding out what bands they use) should set you straight
>>
>>58429535
Hell no, the XA is an overpriced dogshit phone already (entry level specs, MEDIAKEK, laughable 2300 mAh battery but nice camera for the price), the XA Ultra is the exact same sans for the extra inch, extra GB of ram, 1080p screen and slightly (2600) better battery, they didnt even bother to put a fingerprint scanner or gyroscope on that thing despite costing almost twice as much (at least in my country), you want a sony phone that is actually good? Z3 Compact, X Compact or XZ are your only choices, for 320 dolaroos the only decent non refurbished non used phones you can get are either the Hauwei P9 or the Moto Z Play.

Moto G4 is about $200, and it's a pure upgrade if you liked the G1.
>>
>>58430463
The OG vanilla version has always costed 179 dollars (G, G2, G3, G4), its just that motorola went full retard with their GOAT budget phones and instead of ironing out issues, optimizing a single device and packing it full of features (the moto G had gyroscope and inbuilt gps, the G3 had a pretty impressive camera for its price) they went full jew with their phones and made at least 2 versions of it to get some extra shekels out of every goy foolish enough to want a decent device for 200 dollars (G3 turbo, G4 Plus, G4 Play).

>>58430447
Maybe, but the G5 is going to be 5.5" 1080p at the very least, id worry more about the expandable storage, keeping the earphone jack and removable battery which is what lets you keep said device for 4 years minimum.

So my htc one m8 seems to have finally thrown in the towel. Even after factory resetting it problems still occur that I just don't want to deal with anymore. So I'm looking for an upgrade.

I'm US based and my carrier is T-mobile.

I really enjoyed the m8, although my uncle had trouble with the m9 which pit a sour taste in my mouth for htcs. I use my phone for buts of everything, so I need one that can handle that, probably least important for me is camera quality.

Battery life is also very important to me.

snapdragon 625 very good for battery that combined with 5000mAh and super amoled display you'll have the best battery life even better than moto z play
>>
>>58433208
Redmi 4 gets great battery life with mid tier specs that's plenty powerful for regular use and gaming, redmi note 3 pro gets good battery life with a more powerful processor and more ram, also bigger screen if that's what you're into, and zuk z2 because it's pretty much a flagship with a weaker camera and screen resolution(1080p).

Battery life is
>redmi 4 = ~10 hours SoT per charge
>redmi note 3 pro = ~8 hours per charge
>zuk z2 = ~7 hours per charge

You can usually get a little more if you're being super conservative with brightness and how you use it.

Lenovo p2 isn't out yet though.
>>
>>58433247

MIUI is far better from ZUI and any other android rom in the market.

Below are the few points and function that ZUI lacks :
1.) Fingerprint is only used for unlocking lock screen. I can't lock apps from fingerprint.
2.) No built in facility to lock apps , hide photos ,messages etc.
3.) No Dual Apps feature.Although its coming in almost all roms now.
4.)No cloud storage , no backup of phone messages , calls history , even I can use google apps for contacts , photos and notes backup but not for messages.
5.)No equalizer for music player , no dolby atmos sound that almost each lenovo phone have then why flagship phones like ZUK don't have this.
6.)No android browser default browser is Opera for India.
7.) Slow software updates

What I like about It
1.) Phone performance is good , although I am not a gamer but its good for me for daily needs.
2.)Quite compact in size , easy to carry and one hand operation.
3.)Really Like U-TOUCH , U-Health feature.

I think lenovo ZUI should consider these points , although these facility is available in Lenovo Vibe UI phones in India like K5 Note etc.
>>

For someone who isn't a '''''power user'''''' and just wants to browse 4chan comfortably, listen to music and occasionally call someone would a blackberry passport hold up well or should I just go for a 'powerful' budget phone such as the redmi instead for a bit more futureproofing?

Main thing that puts me off is that all the phones nowdays look identical and I don't like the way they look or feel whereas the passport (and priv which I cannot afford, I only have like £150 max) looks different and looks more functional with the keyboard and big screen
>>
RN3P vs Zuk Z2

WHat's the advantages and disadvantages of the two phones compared to one another?

- Battery
The RN3P has a bigger battery and the cpu is more battery efficient

- CPU
The Z2 has a better cpu but you won't even feel the difference in real world applications. So it's not as big a factor compared to battery.

- Camera
The Z2 has a slight lead but it's not that big of an impact, both are good in good light but both are still bad in low light.

- Display
RN3P has a better display and higher brightness, 450 Nits compared to Z2's 400.

- Body
RN3P has a metal body and isn't slippery like the Z2

- Audio
RN3P has MIUI optimizations that make even the Eiaosi X6 sound better than a $1 earphone. While the Z2 does not have Dolby Atmos.

Software Support
- Z2 will get Nougat while RN3P only has CM14.1

Skin
- MIUI is better than ZUI

They don't need a six month release cycle to stay ahead of Android.

WAAAAAHHHHH

I've been looking for a replacement phone for my G Note 7 for many months, but nothing compares. For the love of god, why don't they make good phones anymore? Obviously I'm willing to compromise and give up on removable battery or storage or not stylus or a physical home button or a stylus, but why the fuck do I have to get rid of it all? I was finally gonna throw in the towel and buy an overpriced Pixel XL, but now they are fucking backordered til march.

Tl;dr, i'm a big baby and I want to replace my Note 4 with something (and I'm willing to wait for a release), will there ever be a phone for me again?
>>
>>58434590
I meant note 4. Oops
>>
>>58434521
There's not much point in comparing the phones because they're a different size

Also any phone can have Dolby Atmos, it's a piece of software... Using it on my rn3p and it could easily be installed on any other phone

RN3P is supposed to be getting nougat eventually too.
>>
What is good iOS-like launcher?
Preferably open-source
>>
>>58434521
Wow.
Xiaomi shills really getting desperate.
>>
should I just say fuck it and get the x compact with protective screens for front and back? I dislike the glossy design but there is no other compact phone on the market. I might jump rope for the mi6 if it's cheap enough and worth it even for a device over 5 inches..

My Xperia z3 kicked the bucket last night, 0% battery and if i leave it charging it just acts as if I plug and unplug the charger over and over again.

So I'm in the market for a new phone.
>Spain
>Yoigo
>Size about as big as a regular z3
>Don't care about specs since why the fuck do I want quad core x86 processors on a twitter whatsapp 4chan machine
>Want decent cameras
>Since adopted SD storage I don't care about internal storage
>I enjoy barebone ROMs
>Somewhat decent build quality, I drop my phone
But here is where I need some guiding
>I want some sort of NFC charge or magnetic charger like the z3 since I dock my phone in my car on a daily basis
>Anywhere under 500€
>>
>>58434780
>Also any phone can have Dolby Atmos, it's a piece of software...

You need hardware support for it, the soft only Dolby Atmos is not as good as the hard wired Dolby Atmos.

Anyone with CM/LOS on redmi note 3 pro have problems with notifications for WhatsApp or LINE?

WhatsApp web disconnecting constantly and I gotta open up WhatsApp just to see messages

$100.

Under 200 would be the zuk z2.

Nope, and I don't use Line so idk.

Jesus you guys are costist. Because my phone is less than 120 bucks you can't help me? I bet if I took the asus zenfone 2 or the moto g4 play you would be clambering to help me.

It happens to me too on stock 7.0, I think it's just WhatsApp

People help with phones they have, and yes, the zenfone and g4 play are very popular and therefore you're more likely to find help.
Common sense really.

Should one buy the Redmi Note 4 now or wait for the (rumored) Note 4X with the Snapdragon?

as someone coming from years of Nexus, I'd recommend avoiding MIUI

I'd wait until the 17th for the Xiaomi event to see what they are unveiling. probably redmi note 4 pro
>>
is a notable step down in SOC actually a noticeable step down?

my 5X bootlooped so I was looking at a G4 Play to replace it (seriously don't think I can go back to no fingerprint reader), but is the inferior 410 going to have a noticeable difference in day to day use (texting, internet browsing, reading articles, twitter)? I don't play games on my phone.
>>
>>58429435
i was just looking for a new player, somehow i don't like black player. what do you guys use ?
>>
>>58437323
just got rid of my own Nexus 5X. beware, everything except Pixel/6P/few others will have inferior cameras

I replaced mine with a RMN3PSE and the camera is dog shit :(

I seen something recently that people who replaced their 5X with similar LG phones were disappointed
>>
>>58437367
yeah, it's unfortunate there is no alternative with as good a camera/price ratio as the 5X -- it's actually why I bought it in the first place

I might just get an iPhone SE, no Android phones out there right now seem to have what I'm looking for since I don't really want to go full phablet size (had a Nexus 6 and hated it).
>>
>>58437324
for video mx or vlc
for audio blackplayer, vanilla music, or apollo (latter two found on fdroid too!)

>>58437323
>is a notable step down in SOC actually a noticeable step down?
wewlad
In intensive apps, yes. You'll notice stuttering.

>>58436989
Even if you aren't a custom rom autist, you will get annoyed at MIUI and wished you had chosen a phone with community support so you can flash a custom rom.

>>58437367
5X cam is a noticeable step down from the 6P/Pixel/iPhone/OP3(T).
Why would you replace a $250+ phone with a $150 one?
>>
>>58437462
the 5X camera is exactly the same as the 6P, the 6P just processes faster

get back to me when you've actually used the phones you're talking about bruv
>>
>>58437471
>the 6P just processes faster
So a noticeable step down. Processing images faster goes a very long way when using any smartphone camera.
Seem very sensitive for no good reason tho breh, wanna talk about it? Made some bad decisions in life?

Speaking of cameras...

is there a better camera program?
quickly trying out stock/google camera vs open camera on the nexus 5 and moto x pure, i think I've had better results with open camera.

Owners of Pixel phones are spending $800+ on their device (or worse, taking on a shitty contract to pay it off), so they feel a desperate need to rationalize it. Especially since Goog fanboys are so desperate to prove how much better it is than iPhones. Really the entire thing is such an embarrassing fiasco.

So, I wanted spen features on my at&t note 2 without using the stock ROM, so I installed DN4 on it, and it works well asides from a major issue.
Every time I put the device to sleep, after a minute or 2, it reboots. When I let it boot back up and not do anything letting it go back to sleep, it does it again. Anyone know of how to fix this?

Norway, in the ~€399 range, something with a large screen and a huge battery, and doesn't run hot as shit like the Snapdragon 810 I have in my current phone. I don't mind trying a chinkphone so I don't have to play a premium brand fee.

I'm really considering buying a Google Pixel, but I don't really like Android. People tell me iOS is better, and I need a good camera etc. Would Oneplus 3T worth it? Is the camera any good? The downside is that I have small hands, so the 3T's size would be kind of awkward to hold.
