Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm trying to reset the bios password, as the thinkpad(w520) that I bought has a pw that the seller can't remember.
To do so, I need to access the EPROM chip to short it on boot. I have found a guide on accessing this chip on w520/w510's, however the mb is stuck to the backplate via a screw I can't find.
This is a picture of the section that is stuck, with labelled screws.
1 = all 4 like that screw (which I believe are holding the heatsink in place)
5 = all screws holding down the heatsink
I can't think of which screw could be connected to the backplate, as they all seem to be holding down parts of the heatsink, cpu, etc.

Hey /tpg/

I just got an x230 so I could learn how to linux, and I was looking at replacing the keyboard since the trackpoint is a little fucky. The one I currently have has no backlighting, and I was looking at either going with an x220 keyboard (the NMB type) or paying a bit more and just getting a backlit x230 keyboard, which as I understand would be a plug and play replacement.

I don't find myself super attached to the x220 layout, but I do like the cosmetics of the keys better than the x230.

Is there any reason other than looks and the layout to go through the effort of getting an x220 keyboard to work? The quality of construction? The functionality of the keys?

Any input would be appreciated.
>>
/tpg/ is there literally ever a legit reason to put 16gb ram in an x220 or x220t or is that just overkill?
>>
>>58426140
overkill, and if you were actually doing some kind of graphically intensive work that needs 16gb, the hd 3000 (iGPU) isn't the best choice for that sort of thing, unless you're using an egpu setup

but I personally would never go beyond 8gb of ram in a laptop, unless it already came like that

can't wait for a few years to pass so i can buy either a t460 or t470 for just a fraction of the price, like we already do with the __20 and __30 series

>1:18 left at 95%
What is its capacity compared to original capacity? Also, frequently charging to near-100% than discharging is the worst thing for battery life.
>>
>>58426712
From my experience:

>texture
8470p > X230 non back-lit > X220 > X230 backlit

>key-travel, sturdiness, wobble, etc
X230 > X220 > 8470p

X220 > X230 > 8470p

The wiki has false information. The only way to swap the keyboard is to file down the nibs. A palmrest swap as mentioned in the wiki simply will not work because the xx20 palmrest does not fit. At all.

So I can't trust that wiki page if the authors don't even check if the bullshit they are spewing is correct.

But i dont know if i would like the tablet version or not and that's what has prevented me from just picking one, ill probably be happy with either.

If im just using it for web browsing, some light indie games like rimworld, watching videos and the occasional word processing, would the tablet be worth it? I think the reversible screen would be nice for watching videos but i would like some feedback.

>>
>>58428919
Yeah. In my own experience my T420 palmrest was completely incompatible with my T430 so I had to file the keyboard. Then I looked at side views of the W and X models out of curiosity. The sides of the palmrests don't match up because of the new usb ports or the expresscard slot changing position.

I know from reading these TPG threads that people will often cite the wiki as concrete proof that the method is possible but everyone that's posted here has always seemed to file their keyboard down.

It MAY be possible with a T430s because the T420s models have USB 3.0 and the position might not have changed in the next generation, meaning the palmrests are the same, but I cbf looking this up.

they have messed up the layout big time.
the browser navigation buttons are gone, volume buttons are gone.
the hinges are shit quality so the screen begins to wobble after 2 years of use.
they gave them terrible 16:9 screens that lack the vertical space you would need on a business laptop (should have kept the option to choose between 4:3 and 16:10)

They are sold cheap off lease. It's a common trend with any enterprise gear. Why anyone would buy these for their MSRP is beyond me.

Well, if that's the case, then there's really no reason for me to replace the keyboard if I can fix the trackpoint. Does anyone know what to do if the trackpoint keeps floating on its own after you've released it for a couple of seconds? It happens enough times when I'm using it that it gets on my nerves.

Got an i7 T510 for 95 bucks, although no adapter included any the battery may be shot. Did I do good?

Also the S&H is 60 bucks.
>>
>>58431261
i think you mean the constant track point calibration which iirc is built in.

when you apply the same pressure in one direction for a few seconds it will start to ignore that signal so when you release it gets a rebound effect.

its the way the trackpoint trims itself to be perfect but can be annoying esp in games. i just swipe the touchpad quickly and it stops the trackpoint crawling

Nevermind, you meant X220, i missread and i thought you were talking about X200.

They go around $140 on "Acceptable" conditions and $170 Mint state but goes over my budget.

Well when it comes to Thinkpads "acceptable" is really acceptable compared to other laptops. That's why these are easily the best computers if you're on a budget.

>tfw want to buy a new ThinkPad but they aren't coming out for a while

Are the Sky Lake generation ones good?
>>
>>58432763
Depends. There are 2 kinds of Thinkpad users.

The ones who think that the new keyboard ruined everything and the ones who don't. As far as performance is concerned, you should be fine with a Skylake but if you don't like the new keyboard... well there's really nothing you can do about it. I'd never buy a new Thinkpad though. Why pay $1500 if you can get a used Thinkpad for less than $500?
>>

Would you say the brand new thinkpads keep the same thinkpad spirit which makes /tpg/ admire them, or are they becoming corrupted as some people would think?

They don't keep anything up. They've become consumer products. There was literally no reason for Lenovo to go to a 6 row keyboard. Have you noticed how much spare space the new Thinkpads have between the upper keyboard row and the display?

why are the volume buttons gone?
why are the browser navigation buttons gone? those were one of my main reasons to prefer a thinkpad over most other laptops.
why is the media functionality on the arrow keys gone? there was literally no reason to get rid of that....

there really isn't much point to do this kind of thing, you'll end up with two devices with pretty much equivalent specs and you'll end up only using one or the other, probably the x230 because the t420 display is trash, unless you do something like specifically buy a downspecced x-series.

Would highly recommend it after using it daily for a few months now, but I am currently only using it as I gave my keyboard to someone else. I am eventually going to get a logitech k120.

This is really useful in a tight space, and also has a nice look with the equally small m325 mouse next to it, but it does become a pain in the ass when I want to either use numlock, or hit page down/pageup & home/end, as they require pressing in conjunction with FN

so it is worth the $10 bucks, but I would only use it as a placeholder, backup keyboard, or for a portable setup

$160 is cheap as shit for a T601F, go for it. The things usually cost $200+ to build, and that's assuming you can even find all the parts.
>>
This is a long shot, but I've googled the question for months and I feel that it may be somewhat limited to Thinkpad X220/X230 line since others have had similar issues.

Anybody ever have an issue with sudden shut off (instant black screen, very rare) and using sleep mode causing hanging and then sudden shut off (somewhat common, maybe once every 8-12 hours of uptime)?

I've tried updating the BIOS, replacing RAM and hard drive, cleaning the fan. It seems that its a motherboard problem, but that I can lessen the incidence by taking apart the laptop and putting it back together. One thing that helps for a while is to disassemble most of the laptop and then unplug/replug the keyboard, the data cable from under the palm rest, and the wifi card. It seems that after doing that, the symptoms of sudden shut off go from everyday (heavy usage) to every 3-7 days.

Any ideas?

Guys, Im looking to buy a Thinkpad/Latitude/Elitebook for work, and although there's plenty options when you get a bit picky things are not that easy.

I would like a 14" model, with SSD and this is the most important thing, an 1080p IPS screen. Hell, even a 1600x900 is fine. I don't care that much about cpu and ram, but I want an ips panel.

Aesthetically I find Dells the most pleasing to my eye but I'm considering all options. Would like to keep things under 500 €.

So far I took a look at the Latitude E5440 and 5450 but as I say most have shitty 768p TN screens.

What would you recommend? Pls no memes. I would like to keep this for years ahead.

I kind of believe that RAM 'for Mac' is bullshit. But I have heard it explained that Macs have finicky speed and cas latency that are just not manufactured; to use standard RAM in a Mac, it may cause random glitches or just not work at all. Hence the need for speshul 'Mac RAM'

But the specs vary from model to model so I don't see how it isn't bullshit to sell just one 'Mac compatible' RAM like it would work on every machine. It's making money off idiots who don't know how their computer works; i.e. idiots who bought Macs

I may be wrong, but that's what I'm assuming. The info just isn't really available on what this stuff actually does because Apple a shit. I wouldn't want to put that in a T420 though just in case

X220 for school and IPS screen
T420 for general use.

I had a look around and there was a picture of a bitch being plowed by a guy with "RON PAUL /b/" written on his dick. I mean, I guess it's fun making fun of people... I do it myself, but not as well as you guys. I actually met my bitch through facebook, so I guess we're all a bit nerdy sometimes.

Don't be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I deserve it after what I was like. I resigned from the football team and took up chess, and quit basketball when I realised the only people playing were niggers anyway. I also tried jacking off to an anime girl, which actually isn't all that bad. I only got straight A's because my mom fucked the principal, and my hot girlfriend is actually just a blow-up doll (She just popped; Shit was SO shit). You are all just reasonable people who should disregard what I said to you, don't become "an heroes" LOL (am I a newfag or what?). Thanks for listening, no hard feelings, right?

I found a W520 for about $350. It comes with a 120gb MSATA ssd, i7 2nd gen, NVIDIA Quadro 2000M, 1920x1080 resolution, and the charger. Is this a good deal?

It's just a bit of anonymous banter, I don't have a low enough self-esteem to have false insults get to me me kek

I use my laptop the last 30 minutes of my shift when I'm on break, probably not the most opportune time for it, but I guess it's an occupational hazard, I take a full shower after work because how nasty I feel after handling all the books, but I guess I just don't care enough at the end of my shift, what it fucking does to the keyboard will probably make me wash my hands for ~10 minutes before using it at work though lmao
>>
>>58444720
It really is anonymous banter, I don't mean it at all

I totally understand it isn't your fault now, I meant the comment about touching books and feeling residue afterwards. I used to have the same problems when I worked retail - I would try not to touch anything in my pocket (phone) until I could get on break and either wash my hands or use some wipes

also
>be using bathroom
>pharmacist walks up to urinal next to me
>the actual pharmacist though, not just the pharm techs
>has a mug with him
>sets drink on top of urinal
>pisses
>walks out without washing hands, takes mug with him
>>
>>58444770
Dude, it's like that with the IT guys here

>be taking my daily 6 PM taxpayer funded shit
>some dude walks up the the urinal
>hear a clink coming from above me
>think he had a keychain or something that hit the urinal
>he finished up
>I hear the sound of a bottle being filled with water from the sink
>no sound of washing hands

I was thinking about it later, and one of the IT guys always carries around a fucking thermos wherever he goes

Absolutely Disgusting

I thought these things were supposed to be durable. What the shit. That wasn't there before this morning. Replacing the chassis isn't really worth it, either. Isn't it pretty expensive to buy a new one?

a battery doesn't last very long. if you bought it used, the battery might have been dead on arrival. they almost always are with used thinkpads.
>>
>>58445665
Yeah, I ended up just ordering a new battery. 30 buck chunk out of my wallet, but hopefully it's worth it. This thing was supposed to be cheap, but oh well.

just got my x201t, cost 98 including shipping. Getting wifi working was a bitch, but finally got it in tip top shape.

can it run wow is the question
>>
>>58445720
when buying a used thinkpad you should alway plan for ~$50 more for a new battery. laptops batteries aren't exactly durable. if you use the laptop daily it might lose 30% capacity within a year.
>>
>>58445756
I gave some leeway, since I knew I'd have to buy a charger and SSD. I was hoping the battery would be decent, though.

when looking for a upgrade display for my x200 I see different labels like boe, boe/hydis, hydis.
Are there any differences between them?
Are the boe only labeled ones worse, cause they tend to be cheaper?
>>
>>58446889
HP consumer grade is garbage.
Terrible build quality
Overheats a lot
HP "business grade" computers are pretty gud tho. still run toasty, but not overheating.
>>58421548
Just got an x220t and lenovo power manager says battery error please reinsert battery (or something like that)
CPU is locked to 800mhz with the 60 watt adapter like it should
Also when I plug the computer in the battery light shows up orange for 1/4 a second, flashes green 2 times, then a pause then once more before it turns off.
Sometimes after that it will flash orange a few more times until the light turns off.
>>
>>58445314
It's durable as in it will continue to work despite taking a beating, not in the sense that it is made of titanium and will never get scratched.

waaaaay to much. 8GB would be too much actually but if you have a 4GB module pre installed you should go for a second one because dual channel

>>
>>58447474
this is about an X220. I doubt that anyone would play Diablo on that and have several tabs including Netflix open at the same time. 4GB is plenty for a 12" laptop. On my Desktop I have 32GB just in case.
>>
>>58447474
Nigger, fix your PC and your head. I can run over 100 tabs in Chrome and a game or two simultaneously - all on 4GB 1333Hz memory.
If your specs aren't utter crap - you don't need a lot of RAM.

Nevertheless, nowadays having over 4GB is still advised, due to browsers being stupid memory sinks.
>>
>>58447417
That's not a sticker. It's what you see when you remove that bumpy texture which is actually a sticker itself.

my t420s has terrible battery life so I'm thinking of selling it, would an x220 have better life? Would the screen be better? I need something portable with decent battery life. Would the ram I put into my 420 be interchangeable with x220?

>>58447878
Get a better battery. The battery life should be almost identical.

Check how much wear your current battery has with AIDA64

the weird thing is that it is a new 6 cell battery, but I still only get about 3 hours of battery life with a full charge.

Consumer grade is utter trash. Steer clear.
Elitebooks are god-tier. At least the 'older' models (2nd and 3rd gen i- CPUs). Don't know about the newer ones.
Got a 8560W and an X220 myself. Each serve different purposes and are completely different machines so a direct comparison hardly makes sense.
Overall build quality and serviceability is better on the Elitebook. Linux support is better on the Thinkpad.

>>58442091
I see, the t420 does not have an IPS screen then? this seems to come down to a choice between size + screen resolution then.

Decisions to be made..
for people that own an x220, do you feel as if its too small or adequate size?
>>
>>58448799
X220 owner here. For me 12" is the perfect size and I don't think a higher resolution would be beneficial. I don't want UI scaling. That's shit.

the x200 doesnt have a trackpad, and the t440 uses a completely different style of trackpad (which also doesn't have a sticker)
if you dont want a bumpy trackpad then take off the sticker and dont put anything on
sticker off, or bumpy sticker are your only option.
