IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Hey /tpg/.

Is 225$ overpriced for an i7 SSD IPS x220?
I'm looking to purchase a thinkpad, and have been reading over the buyers guide. Why are all x220s so overpriced on eBay?

If in USA yes
Anywhere else that's a good price
I'd say go for it regardless because of the screen

Should I change the thermal paste? Should I upgrade the ram?

This is the X220 btw
>>

Later lenovo batteries are impossible (without special shop tools) to recell because the moment you sever the connection from the battery to the chip that is on there, the battery doesn't work.

Does anybody has tried the Macbook Pro 2016 new keyboard?
I tried it and, excluding the extremely low travel that it has, the keyboard has a surprisely good feeling, almost as a decent mech keyboard.
I though: If Lenovo can duplicate this switch, but add a sane layout and more travel they could make something right this time.
>>
>>58384652
Calculate the cost of the news cells, the materials and the work, then calculate the costs of a new battery.
If the difference is low, then don't be a jew and buy a new one.
>>
>>58384595
>Later lenovo batteries are impossible (without special shop tools) to recell because the moment you sever the connection from the battery to the chip that is on there, the battery doesn't work.
thats why you keep the chip powered using a bench supply.

>>
>>58384839
so apparently it locks out if it loses power. if you match the voltage of the batteries with a power supply and connect it in parallel then it wont drop below the threshold level.

I dont know if this is a safety feature to prevent people from charging overly discharged batteries. Theres a method of resetting this in some battery packs if its just a safety thing.

But if its to prevent people from rebuilding the battery then i'm ASSUMING that once power is lost the data is gone.

>>58384848
There has yet to be a successful way that is severely not inconvenient.
definitely true, have been looking around
>>
>>58385025
Is there a posibility of overcharge the chip and burn it trying to avoid the voltaje drop out?
I know shit about electricity.
>>
>>58385034
you can overvolt any electronics.
so yeah.

The biggest danger is the battery cells though as they can explode if heated too much (from trying to solder tabs) or if shorted.

I'm thinking of using silver epoxy to do the joining of cells since I dont have access to a spot welder and the protective equipment (full face mask)
>>
>>58385053

There's a good bit more than that. You have to keep the controller powered, and you have to keep all the individual cell sense voltages stable. If the controller sees any one of those voltages change suddenly or go out of spec, it blows the fuses.

You can easily get a better deal at eBay. Looks like the basic x220 config.
>>
>>58385996
I'm bad at buying laptops since they are prebuilt and do not know specs for laptops at all.
Desktops being custom built and all make it relatively easy compared to a laptop.

Can you point to a good x220 if you have some spare time? I live in Virginia, US.
Else, whats a good config?
>>
>>58386036
It's not necessarily a bad buy, but for that price you could get a X230 (e.g. I got mine with 8GB for $175).

With just casual browsing of eBay, I found this base X220 for $130: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X220-Laptop-Core-i5-2nd-Gen-2-5GHz-12-1-LCD-4GB-320GB-HDD-Win-10-/391664353974

The specs aren't really a big deal CPU-wise as the i7 isn't that much better than the i5, it's just that if you're spending more, it should probably have 8GB and/or an SSD.

The trackpoint was designed to keep your hands ready to type.
If it was centered because of the numberpad, it would be in an awkward area, as its not ready to type.
Also it is guaranteed doom if you don't put a numberpad on a 15.4" laptop or bigger.

Does the battery metre on screen only charge to 50% and then stop? Or does it charge to 100 but then only give you a few hours?
A big issue with second hand thinkpads is the batteries are mostly all diminished. Mine only lasts for around 3 hours on full charge.

If it's only displaying that it's 50% on screen and not going further than that seems like a weird hardware issue

Hello anons, I've got a question.
Why should I buy a thinkpad laptop.
I've got a PC, which is decent, 2-3 years old. i5 3570k and 7870 video card and 16GB of ram (because we all know ram is a meme here, I use it for photoshop)
Next up I've got a tablet, samsung s605 - that's the 10.1 inch 2014 edition note. I use it for drawing too, and as a laptop replacement.
Next up I've got a Cintiq 13HD which I use for drawing attached to my PC.
Only reason I can think of having a thinkpad that'd be useful, would be to connect my cintiq13 while lying in bed to use superior Wacom tech to draw on it, but it has a shit videocard (integrated intel 3000)

So I can't really find a reason to spend around 170 euro for a thinkpad x220 tablet
Link: https://kozelat.com/lenovo-thinkpad-x220-tablet-27678
It even has warranty and is A-

But my fear is that I'll purchase it and it'll simply be lying somewhere collecting dirt, as I'd preffer to bring my tablet instead of the thinkpad wherever
>>

Then don't buy a thinkpad

Not pic related anon but I've repainted my X220 as well to remove scratches.
Firstly, prepare surface to paint. That is, dismantle laptop and free all parts you want to paint, degrease it, alcohol works fine here; then rough surface you want to paint. Now, two options here - you eighter remove ruberized black coating altogether - not an easy task when doing it manually or just rough the surface with a abrasive. Next step, go get automotive base coat and apply it. A guide on how to paint a car with a rattlecans should be read as well. After one or two layers of basecoat, start applying color. You can go fancy here and start with metalic paint, so the color itself becomes more vibrant. Gold plus red is my favorite.
Two, three layers of color later you spray topcoat 'clear' and you wait 24H before touching any freshly painted part. 48H would be even better but who can wait that long?

Last thing - dust is you enemy. Paint in a clean, protected space.

Just ordered an i7-3612qm on ebay for $128 to go into a t430.

I've heard replacing the fan for an iGPU model (like mine) with a fan from an nvidia model will improve temps due to better fan speed. Is there any truth to this?

Also, has anyone installed a CPU with copper shims to improve temps? Does it actually help it all?
>>
>>58396613
it depends on the heatsink. there are 3 i believe. all with different heatpipe configurations.
>>
>>58396713
I'm pretty sure my model is actually a t430i. The only different configurations I could fine were between the integrated and nvidia models.

I ordered the copper shims anyway because they were only a few bucks. With the shims, do you install thermal paste on both sides or only one? I'm not entirely sure what the purpose of the shims are. Does it just provide more contact or does it also provide heat dissipation due to the large size of the shim versus the surface area of the cpu?

For note taking only, I'd actually recommend an X61 or X200/X201 tablet for the higher res screens and better digitizers.
>>
>>58397225
After looking at x201s I see alot do not have a stylus. How does one replace them? They also have weak processors it seems. For note taking and using Microsoft office would it suffice?
>>
>>58397271
For note taking, sure. If you plan to play any games at all, the X201T would probably be your best bet, but be aware they run much hotter than the X200T. For a new stylus, just search for the ThinkPad model, and "stylus".
>>

Got my X230 yesterday.

Unfortunately the keyboard, while in QWERTY, has some foreign shit on it + a short left shift which I despise. Since I will be switching it, should I just go for x220 keyboard? How does it compare?

Fairly small. I guess I'll just do my own testing and try not to burn my house down.

A little late to comment, but the styluses for Samsung Notes work perfectly.

Hi TPG, I always thought the Thinkpads were memes, but I might be able to snatch a ThinkPad T400 2768 for a couple bucks.

It has the following specs:

Intel Core2Duo P8700 @ 2.53Ghz
4 Gig DDR3 ram @ 532 Mhz
Intel Mobile 4 series express chipset GMA X4500M
ATI Mobility Radeon HD3470 (256mb)
14.1" 1440x900
150Gig HDD (Might pick up SSHD or cheapo SSD)
CD-Drive
Wi-Fi & Bluetooth
Battery claims to work for 1,5 hours.

Is a T440 with T450 trackpad (physical trackpoint buttons) a big pain, say with Linux drivers? Or does it just function normally?

anybody can comment on x140e?

i have an unused SSD sitting around that I could slap in there. is $140 fair?
>>
>>58413111
That processor blows. Can't say I see why you'd torture yourself with this thing when an X201 would cost the same while actually being usable.

I got a good condition 2570p with everything for $100.
>>
>>58410408
I'd get a xps 13" with that cash
>>
>>58412691
well, on earlier thinkpads they are literally considered the same as any plugged in ps/2 mouse
>>
>>58413816
Saw someone on reddit say the same, might be worth it

yeah, here's the line from dmesg

Are the graphics and screen really that much of an upgrade? I'm seeing HD 520 vs iris 540 and and the lenovo's 2560 x 1440 vs 3200 x 1800
>>
>>58414019
Is it a 15" 4:3 model? You did great if it is, that sucker's gonna have a 1400x1050 IPS screen or better. Decent price if it's any other variant.
>>
>>58414124
biggest thing is touch vs non-touch. arguably higher resolutions use more battery. i'm not a gamer and use linux so most intel chipset is fine with me (i don't really research that too much anymore).
>>
>>58414138
it's 4:3, nice
>>
>>58408474
If always on battery, go for 80-90. If always plugged in, go with 40-50

I recently got a T420 and really like it. Only issue is the track pad kind of sucks. It will fairly regularly not respond to me putting my finger on it. Is it just mine or do other T420 owners have the same issue?

Real quick question
T420 with 4gb ram and 320gt hdd for 180€?

What are the drivers I want to AVOID for my thinkpad W520, to ensure the least amount of botnet? I'm about to freshly install Win7
>>
>>58411414
>more portable
you couldn't be more wrong
>>
>>58415009
you want to avoid windows. lenovo has ensured that spyware is installed by the bios every time windows is installed
>>
Got a W500 and it gets a bit toasty after a while even with the dGPU disabled in BIOS, current CPU is a T9500. Would undervolting it be a solution for less heat via TLP?

>>58415009
>9gag

>>58415128
Would a custom BIOS bypass this? Was planning on getting a W530 and doing the keyboard swap and I'm hoping the custom one would prevent the programs from being installed.

i hugged my thinkpad and fall a sleep

I was thinking of getting a T450. Is the TN panel on these really that bad?
>>
>>58415756
Or should I get an X240 instead? Which I'm honestly leaning towards, just for the IPS panel.

it's on a gift card cause my boss bought me a yoga 910 and fuck reaching over the cursor keys to reach the right shift. he should have considered what a decent keyboard means to a programmer

Decent looking X220 are hard as fuck to find in Portugal.

The seller said he bought 2 units off of ebay and slapped in some SSDs and Windoes 10 to make a profit. Says the battery last for 2h.

Is this a good deal?

>I5-2520M
>128G SSD
>Windows 10

299€

Worth it?
>>

3 units not 2
Windows, not Windoes

holy shit, after a year or 2 of using chiclet keyboards, using a thinkpad board feels so fucking foreign, my calculation of distance between key presses is all fucked. Not to mention the "Fn" key and Ctrl key are swapped..This is gonna take some time getting used to.
>>
>>58419305
I had one. The i5 mobos went out of factory with a glitchy as fuck bios and chipset, so they're almost unusable. I bought a i5 mobo to replace the faulty mobo of mine and the new still faulted.
Try to get an i7 one. They're usable.

You fucking faggots memed me good.

I send back the T430 I bought. the fan was loud as fuck, the keyboard was even shittier than on my samsung laptop. The screen was pure trash.
The nub is probably the only good thing about it.

Guess I'll be buying a dell or an HP elitebook then
>>
I can get the DELL Latitude E6430 for 230$. but it has the shitty screen. yes/no?
>>
>>58420201
Investigate if you can put an IPS panel at least.
If not, then try to save a bit more and get a X220/X230 with IPS screen.
>>
>>58420220
I can also get the HP EliteBook 2570P for 200$
I can put a screen in the dell, but it will be 80$ more. for that price I could just buy a thinkpad.
