IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm looking for a cheap model of the thinkpad to learn linux on, ive fucked around with ubuntu before but want to dive it.

Looking for something cheap, ~$150 usd tops, internet use, maybe netflix, general use. Above all learning linux, I'm thinking either debian or mint

Ive looked at the x200 and x201, but the main thing I'm looking for is portability, not a gaming machine i have my desktop pc for that.

Any tips?

Got me one of these bad boys today. I'm irrationally happy about two things:

>It has a clitmouse
>The optical drive just pops out, and I can slide in a caddy for a 2nd hard drive without even opening up the casing

I'd forgotten that you could do cool shit like that with a proper tank-built business-class lappitytoppitybox. My last two laptops have been ultrabooks—nice and light and easily portable, sure, but shit build quality and impossible to open up and maintain.

It's also giving me warm, fuzzy feelings that hearken back to my very first laptop, an old IBM Thinkpad that ran Windows 95 (I don't even remember the model number, but I can tell you that even if ZSNES was choppy as all fuck on the thing, it still ran Genecyst like a champ).

I'm on my Latitude D820. I'm sad because 4chan, gelbooru, and github run like dreams but I can't use sites like YouTube, and even the log in page on Dropbox lags like hell. Using Otter Browser helps compared to Firefox, but it's still sad. I hate HTML5. I honestly miss Flash; it may have been vulnerable but at least it fucking worked. Adobe wouldn't have been so quick to dig their on grave if they just open sourced it and let everyone else fix it. And look at that: their most successful and ubiquitous product is fucking dead.

It just pisses me off, this laptop is from 2007 and I have to use a terminal program to stream videos to mpv. And guess what, it works fine! It's HTML5 that's the problem. Imagine if you bought a 2007 Honda Civic and you just couldn't drive on the highway with it because the government decided to "upgrade" the highway so only new engines would work on them. well, I don't know how bad power management is in linux (I guess about 1-2 hours less than under windows).
My old x220 with i5-2540m cpu, intel SSD and 9cell battery could handle about 5 hours of internet browsing (which is done on firefox, ublock origin installed, flash disabled + httpseverywhere)
Also system properly configured, almost no background jobs. Battery wear level at about 25%

Got my 3612qm for my t430 today. Ordered thermal paste over a week ago and it hasn't shipped yet so I cancelled the order. Guess I'll go to Best Goy tomorrow and get some since there's no other options nearby. Also ordered the nvidia hsf on ebay to hopefully get good temps.

I plan on going eGPU with a 1050 ti. The couple places I've ready suggest going with a PE4L over the EXP GDC due to pci-e 2.0 speeds instead of 1.0, but I can't find anywhere that sells the PE4L for a reasonable price (<$100) where as I could get an EXP GDC for ~$50 on eBay.

Does anyone know of such a place so I'm not stuck with the worse of the expresscard eGPU options?

I got this one for €30, has two batteries, 1GB of RAM, a new screen and a 160GB hard drive, so it's had a few minor upgrades from the previous owner.
I get four hours of battery life which is pretty good considering the batteries are 12 years old.

Got it for word processing mostly because it was cheap, durable and has a nice keyboard.

Trying to get the wifi working is a pain in the ass on XP though.

Overall 10/10 little machine especially for the price.

Hey /tpg/
I already have a T430s, but I am interested in a x61/x60 as well.

Does anyone here have a tablet version of an X series? What makes them good, what do you use the touchscreen functionality for? I could get an X61t with a dock and second battery for around 90€.

There's also the option of a x61s for around the same price.

Both have similar specs and an XGA resolution.

I have a Thinkpad x201. My CPU overheats and gets underclocked (throwing dmesg errors, would prefer not to have that happen) whenever I use a VM with Windows in it.

1. Is it safe to replace the thermal paste? I'm looking at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJZZSD8x9_8 and I'm thinking that's more a full-day project with lots of potential problems. Has anyone else done this?

2. Is using the Coollaboratory Liquid series thermal paste safe? It's all conductive, so I was just wondering if there were any obvious problems with that, and if I should go with a hotter but non-conductive thermal paste.

Thanks for any help /tpg/.

Can someone in the US please get this off my hands

I sold it to someone before, but the delivery driver considered it undeliverable as addressed. Then I just relisted it and accepted the first offer I got because I was pissed off since it took around 20 days for me to finally get the laptop back, it turned out to be a scammer, so just within the last few minutes I relisted it

I originally sold it for $145 with free shipping, I am willing to go down to $130 and free shipping now. Its a t430, 4gb ram, 1600x900 screen. Needs a new battery, but is perfectly functional.
It has a cracked palmrest but a new one is included (but not installed), and an extra fhd+ video ribbon cable is included as I was originally intending on doing the 1080p screen swap with a different thinkpad, but I changed my mind.

Anyone in the US want it?
>>
>>58474372
Ah cool, the T530 is one of a few models I'm looking at getting.

What about the xx40 models such as the T440 and T540? How's the amp in those?
>>
>>58474570
Realtek ALC292, so should be alright but don't expect anything great
>>
>>58474191
How much of that is page file and hibernate?
>>

Anker.
>>
>>58474567
If I wasn't broke from other thinkpad upgrades I would. Where in the US do you live?

>look at my 125gb ssd
>~110gb free

Apart from using w10, I'm not sure where you fucked up.

i'm not super desperate, its just that I thought this would already be a done deal and yet here I am still having to make space for this when I don't need it (I already have two other thinkpads, no joke)

this is a pic with everything I'll be sending
I already repasted the CPU, but I forgot to attach that little slot that goes above the dvd drive, but its there with everything else, not like its lost or anything

again, if anyone sees this, i''ll take $130 with free shipping for everything in this pic. i just want it off my hands, i'm downsizing everything in my life

I just got my x201tablet running with windows 7 on an old SSD from my gaming rig.

I must say thanks to the anon who recommended one.

Its also sad that this beats the surface 3 I used to have to use for work.

It just werks.

Well, fuck you guys, I guess I'll just take the $30 plunge.

It is in good condition. I contacted the seller. Supposedly the battery is a 6 cell that lasts around 1:30 at 60% on Windows 7
Will likely replace it with a 9 cell.

What type of screen do you have on your T450? I'm thinking about getting one in the future but I'm not sure about the screen.
>>
>>58474406
putting a 4K display on that thing is going to be a terrible idea
>>
>>58471739
ok, my tinfoil alter ego had disabled the the expresscard slot in BIOS, a hdd with a usb 3.0 enclosure get's around 50MB r/w speeds, and around 28-30MB/s on a usb 2.0 slot. I think I've disabled all the power management bullshit which, could interfere
>>
Ahhh I can't decide between T530 and T440 boys. I plan to throw the good quality 1080p display in both of them (B156HW01 V.7/B140HAN01.3 respectively) so the differences mainly come down to size and Ivy Bridge vs Haswell.

What do you think?
>>
>>58479380
Why? Assuming he upgrades the CPU to match I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't want a better screen
>>
>>58479208
Very lucky. I've bought a few mid spec x220s (4gb/HDD but with webcam and extras) and never gotten one for less than £150. I'm mad jealous you got a good condition with all the trimmings for that low
>>
>>58479767
Guess it's just luck man.
It is the lower-end I5 however as opposed to the better one.
I doubt that'll make a difference for my own purposes though.

I'd say I did well for my first thinkpad.

Just hope it's as good as it looks on the ebay posting.

I'm looking for something simple and minimalistic, preferably single-strap (image unrelated).

I wish there was another way to contact you other than this thread, cause if it was available in a week or two I'd jump on it. Give my t430 to my gf so she has a reliable lappy and take this bad boy for myself.

>tfw no qt IBM-branded T60p w/ 1600x1200 display to use at Starbucks for maximum hipster cred
All I have are an X220 and a T520, both with hideous fucking TN 1366x768 displays, the former having a chunk missing of the left corner from a fall, and the latter having white cumstains all under the speakers as in >>58454611 from ebay, but was too lazy and too much of a cuck to send it back. I have a T43 but it can't into youtube comfortably and has a god-awful loud fan that I don't feel like dropping $20 for to replace it.

I'm using an operating system for adults though, Debian.

I use the Thinkpad branded backpack with my x260, which I partly regret because the bag is massive compared to my laptop. It'd fit lots of books/accessories though so it's not all bad.

I won't subject it to particularly harsh condition but it will be carried around almost daily and I don't want something that starts falling apart in couple months.

One option that caught my eye is Mil Tec Day Pack (25l), I guess it's inconspicuous enough not to make me look like a /k/unt.

Aside from USB-C etc, is there any significant difference between the current T460 and the upcoming T470 ?

I'm not excited for USB-C, and wondering if I should bother waiting.
