I posted in thinkpad general but didn't get a response...

I bought a T530 on ebay and I'm wondering if I did good or if the seller is suspect/the model is actually trash etc.

ebay.com/itm/291987726564

Also been slightly bothering me that I can't figure out if this particular model of T530 has a backlit keyboard or not, and if the included SSD is Samsung of Lenovo.

All the phone numbers that were saved on my phone through Google, rather than on the SIM card, have vanished. Messages from those numbers are still there, but they no longer have the name of the sender attached. How can I get those numbers back? I might have told my phone to ignore my Google account when I added a number recently, but I thought I already had that guy's number so it might have been a problem already when that happened.

My sister just bought a refurbished PC, I think she may have been fucked over.

Firstly the harddrive just sounds pretty rough. I know nothing about computers but I know thats bad. It doesn't quite sound like crunching and the system performs okay but I tried to do a /chkdskc and it the test didn't complete.

Then I noticed the hard drive had 1TB written on it, in some system utilities (like the windows partitioning tool thing and in the defragmenter tool) it showed up as 1TB but the computer was sold as having a 320GB HDD and only 320GB of the disk is formatted, the rest being empty space on the hard drive.

I have told my sister to return the computer, but I'm just so fucking confused as to why the refurbishing company would do that. Is it a way to conceal a harddrive fault?

I have a 32GB USB flash drive. I want to be able to boot into TAILS and Kali (ideally both 32- and 64-bit) from it, as well as having a portion just for storage and using as a regular flash drive. Is this doable?

I looked into YUMI, but after installing the distros and shrinking the 'multiboot' partition to create another one for storage, 'multiboot' could no longer be found and I couldn't boot from the flash drive (it just gave me a flashing terminal prompt in the top-left until I held down the power button).

The 'storage' partition would have to be FAT32 as it would have to work with both Windows and GNU/Linux.

Hello, lads. I've been facing some problems while playing online games.
When my computer is the only device connected to Internet, I can play games normally and my ping stays pretty low.
If any other device make any kind of downloading or use any streaming service, my ping goes high as fuck.
How can I solve that problem?

So I just got some new parts for my computer.
A gtx1080 and fx-8350.
I realize that the cpu might be bottlenecking the gpu a tad if it isn't overclocked, though I really don't know how much.

Anyway, I got these parts and tried to play Fallout 4 to test them out.
I started getting drops into the 30-40fps range from just walking around.

Is this normal for this set-up? I would have thought that this set-up would have at least been able to get a consistent 60fps in Fallout 4.
Any ideas what the problem is if there are any?

I have a Raspberry Pi that I am trying to install Kodi on.

Unfortunately I do not have direct internet from my router, and need to connect to another SSID and authenticate to access the internet.

So on my home network, I can Putty into the Pi and connect to the Pi's eth0 port. I then VNC into it, and connect to the internet network (wlan0).

Whenever I try to browse, it appears to use eth0 - as I am directed to my home network's router page.

What I think I am looking for is a command such as "chromium-browser --interface wlan0 URL", unfortunately after checking the man page this does not exist.

I tried to set chromium-browser to proxy through wlan0 but I don't think that's how a proxy is supposed to work.

Should I add the wlan0 default gw as the eth0 default gw? I would imagine not since they are on different networks and it would require a router.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I think its transcoding... (The only way to force no transcode is to delete/rename the transcoder binary).

Try PMP (plex media player) - it's pretty efficient.

BTW - A pull config is just easier to clean. With a push setup the dust is between the fans and the rad, with pull its on the other side. Performance-wise its the same.

Also, if I were to change it from FAT32 to NTFS, everything would go, right?

unsupported format is slower transfer
most drives of a certain size support exfat which will accept the bige guy :)

Compatibility. Some systems (like game consoles for example) only use FAT32

Also if you format to another file system, all data will be lost (obviously)

Hey guys
a couple days ago I was posting about how my computer would turn on for 10 or so seconds then restart ad infinitum, and someone suggested using another, confirmed working PSU
I ended up doing it, and was getting the same problem
So I'm guessing it's either the motherboard or the CPU right? Could I have fucked the CPU by accidentally crushing it? I was really tired when I was first putting it together and forgot to remove the cpu cover at first which bent the pins. Tried fixing em but the pins were so fucked they came out so I had to buy another, but I assumed the CPU was good to go

Will the AM4 socket have a Mini-ITX sized motherboard? AMD only seems to have their FM2 support that size motherboard currently.
>>
>>58415415
FurMark is only really dangerous on anything that isn't cooled properly, or has really crap VRM's.
The PowerColor RX 480 "Red Devil" had shitty VRMs that could blow out on furmark because it had current spikes that the VRMs weren't rated for. FurMark pulls more current than any video game because it hits the areas of the GPU that require the most energy to run, and thus generates an insane amount of heat.

It's fine on any decently built card, but make sure other people have run it on the card that you have without failure.

DO NOT RUN AN OVERCLOCKED CARD ON FURMARK, unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you think you know better, you probably don't.
>>
>>58415445
Most likely, but it might take a few months to come through.
AM4 is replacing FM2, so we should see similar mITX boards to the current FM2 boards.
It will most likely land with "Raven Ridge", which is coming out later this year.

It seems there have been only a few FurMark tests on the same series card, and not the specific model I have (a Gigabyte G1 GTX 980ti).

Is there anything I can do to investigate my card, or should I just assume it will kick the bucket in the near future? I experienced similar hang-ups with my (now fried) GTX 780 in the past, but surely different and more critical. My temperatures are more stable, for example, and

My GPU is at about 35C idle. It can run games, but will experience sudden crashes out of the blue often enough to be a problem. I typically don't get "checkerboarded" often, so much as experience a driver crash or outright crash of either my software or PC entirely, where it will either hang or sometimes restart on its own.

I'd like to save this GPU if I can. If it means I have to do some small amateur messy work, so be it.

I apologize, but I just want to clarify my symptoms. This is typically from within gaming (Rainbow 6 Siege, for example).

+ Sudden crashing (no apparent overheating) to desktop.
+ Driver crashes, as indicated by a pop-up in my taskbar indicating such.
+ Full PC crashing (either complete freezing requiring manual shutdown or, sometimes, automatic restart).

I don't actually get checkerboarded often within games, so much as outside of them, oddly enough. I've seen checkerboarding at system boot-up sometimes after a crash, for example.

Wouldn't you think that other issues would cause the drivers to fail? I'll DDU it and install the latest drivers regardless, though.

Run it through an actual torture test, not just a benchmark. Try something like Prime95 or aida64 for a few hours. If it doesn't crash, it's most likely stable.

Those temps aren't bad, but 1.25v is a little high for only 4.2ghz. Bump up the clocks a little and see if it fails or not.

An add-on for Firefox and Chrome called Stylish recently sold themselves to a company that now collects user data to sell. I've stopped using it, but I want to know if there is a way I can host the skins for the different websites myself instead of using Stylish. There are some skins I would like to keep using even if they are no longer updated.

What are some simple things I can do to increase privacy and security on my computer and online. I've decided I should start being safer when using my PC. So far I have

>Drive encryption

Anything else easy to do that will increase security? Or are these pretty much the big three things I should do?

Using random strings for passwords is only a "big thing" if your old passwords were really bad. If your passwords are good then it's not an improvement.

Clear cookies often / browse in private browsing mode often.

Use AutoProxy (Firefox plugin) and set a machine on your LAN to be ssh proxy, then you can use your home IP only for Google / Facebook / anything that you're logged in to that is linked to your real account. For bonus points, put Tor on it and switch to that in private browsing when you need anonymity.

Privacy badger + ublock + noscript to swerve those trackers and IP leaks.

Be aware that private browsing is a new identity shared between all private browsing tabs / windows. So you can't be a new person until you've closed the last private window.

Might as well ask here since I don't really know this board's etiquette, being the computer near-illetrate that I am, so here goes

I recently fucked up my computer and had to do a clean install of windows 10 from a usb drive. Ever since then, it kept failing at installing any type of windows update. Always getting stuck after the update itself is done being downloaded. I suspect it might have something to do with some kind of license but I have no clue what to do at this point. I tried google already and it failed me.

Would any kind anon here care to give it's opinion on that matter?

>Had to reload a new Windows10 after OS failure, had Win10 previously. 64bit.
>Reloaded programs such as OBS Studio (streaming/video recording), Adobe Auditions, and driver for VB Audio Virtual Cable.
>Went to loop audio from headset mic (definitely working) to Adobe Aud and then into OBS through VB Audio Cable.
>No sound coming from VB Audio Cable in OBS.

Adobe Aud and OBS recognize the virtual cables but no sound in OBS. I made sure they were on the same frequencies, set to the same mode (stereo/mono), and tested to make sure that it wasn't just an OBS problem by checking to see if the VB virtual cable worked in other voice programs such as Discord, Curse, etc.

I also downloaded Virtual Audio Cable to make sure VB Audio Virtual wasn't the cause. Neither works.

The sound is coming into Adobe Aud (shows in input audio levels and everything). Checked on everything in recording/playback, recognizes everything. The problem appears to be coming from either Adobe Aud or my computer not truly registering input/output of the virtual cables even though the drivers are properly installed?

All of this suddenly occurred after having to reload windows and re-download these programs/drivers.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

So the connection we pay for to our house is 1MB/s. For months it has rarely been getting to that speed and has constantly be fluctuating up and down.

My PC is hooked up via ethernet, everything else in the house is connected via wifi. There's 3 laptops and 4 phones that could be on the network but usually it's just one or two of the laptops.

It used to be that both of the other laptops could be watching Netflix and I could still sustain a decent connection and be able to play an fps or moba or someshit with decent ping. Now, even when I'm the only one on the network I'll average at best like 600KB/s, more likely I'll be sitting on 200 - 300KB/s.

There's been work going on and off for a new fibre network to be implemented in my area (NBN), which is ''''expected'''' to be finished this month (but I wouldn't hold my breath); could this really be effecting my connection speed this bad?

Is my ISP just cucking me? Is there anyway I can stop them? Is there anyway I can prioritise my PC over everyone else's devices on the network? I've looked into QoS but I don't really know how it works

If you buy a monitor and there is backlight bleeding on it, is that a valid reason for them to replace the monitor, or will I just have to live with it?

How do I know for sure my GPU is dead rather than "dead"? Power comes on and fans work but nothing shows up on the monitor. Onboard works with the same DVI and the PCI-E slot works with another GPU.
