Well, in my experience you use up 8 GB pretty fast when debugging some huge build in VS, while at the same time having a browser with a lot of tabs.

Okay, if you plan on keeping most of your multimedia on other drives, then 256 will be enough. I got the impression that you wanted to keep it on the SSD since you said it would be for "multimedia use".

Absolutely

The processor are rarely the bottleneck when compiling these days, in my case it's almost exclusively memory use.

I'd ask around to anyone who's doing the same work you are and find out what they use. In a programming field 12 gb can be helpful, as it's potentially one of the more ram intensive things you do, but I think it's pretty flexible. 256gb ssd is enough, but it can be a real pain if you have to use externals frequently. I would check the manual and see if you have free slots to add HDDs later. Also make sure you can stand the keyboard. I hate typing on keyboards that don't recess very far, and I know a lot of people are that way. I wouldn't bother paying for an i7 over an i5 in a laptop since it will just be a dual core anyway (unless you get an HQ edition). HP consumer lines kind of have a rep for external breakage, but I imagine that's something they've been working to fix.

I've just found out that these laptops are like 400 eur cheaper in uk than where I live

the HP ENVY 15-as100na has both ssd and hdd so I believe it is possible to add hdd to 101 model.

I'm grabbing a hand-me-down laptop off someone since my current one is breaking down. The only issue I have with it is it uses Windows 10. I've never tried pirating Windows 7 before, is there a "safe" recommended method that won't fill your computer with Russian malware or is just trying to shut down as much telemetry as possible on W10 safer security-wise?

I'm struggling to boot from a different drive my laptop, i assume the Jews at Lenovo have done this.

I have consulted google and have tried to turn off safe boot (didn't work) and have turned on legacy bois thing (which made the laptop get stuck in a loop when you try and start it up)

Basically, i have cloned the current OS partition onto a SSD and wish to boot from it but when i go into the boot options, window pretends like it doesn't exist.
>>
>>58373356
>Still, it's not like macOS is chock full of FreeBSD.
Well, more so than any Linux distro. But I concede that it is nothing like a FreeBSD distro with a fancy GUI, XNU differs.

However, I quite enjoy that kernel extensions use similar (if not identical?) formats, it makes dtrace scripts portable between the two.

>>58373384
>Kernel is still partially(mostly?) XNU which is also open-source
Yes, but it means that they offer compatible/portable interfaces, which is essential here.

But then again, it shouldn't be surprising. Many of the names popping up in the older XNU files are the same as those in early days of FreeBSD.

> shows everything not closed-source in macOS. It's not exactly much.
Define "not much". Yes, by comparison, the kernel itself may be very small compared to the full Apple "ecosystem" (to use a buzzword), with all the proprietary user applications. But I would say that the kernel itself is an essential part of macOS, I can live without Garage band and iPhoto and Preview, I can't live without Darwin-core and XNU.

Did you only clone the OS partition? Windows needs a GPT/MBR partition, as well as a 100MB UEFI partition. You can fix the first by running fixboot and fixmbr through the command prompt via the recovery options on a Windows install disc.

>>58373433
Amen on dtrace, I couldn't live without it if you held a gun to my head. I don't understand how loonix users live without tracing in general or dtrace in specific.

Not much when comparing to the size of the install when loaded onto a USB disk - I had to, just in case I wanted to restore OSX at some point if I sell this laptop before it dies, and decide to buy a new one instead. I just don't know what other hardware to buy, I'm leaning towards a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 or a Librem if they're still available.
>>
>>58373467

>>

>I don't understand how loonix users live without tracing in general or dtrace in specific.
Well, as someone who has done a lot of Linux development too, there is SystemTap and the older kernel probes (kprobe/jprobe/kretprobe).

>Not much when comparing to the size of the install when loaded onto a USB disk
Well, in terms of binary size then of course. But it's a bit unfair comparison, isn't it?

>I just don't know what other hardware to buy, I'm leaning towards a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 or a Librem if they're still available.
I quite enjoyed my Thinkpad W530 back in the day when this was new, but my mid-2014 rMBP is holding up quite good even though I dropped it on the floor a couple of times and have given it a rough shaking.

For me it's the trackpad and battery life that wins me over with it.
>>
>>58373403
What program did you use to perform the migration? Macrium does a pretty good job transferring all the appropriate hidden partitions.
>>
>>58373511
SystemTap just pales in comparison to dtrace.

Is it? It's the only way I have of comparing, afterall. Likewise, compared with the size of the base system of FreeBSD, it's still not exactly big.

My Macbook Pro is a non-Retina Medio 2012 model and I refuse to buy something without a RJ45 connector, and also refuse to use a dongle. 802.11 is good, but not that good.

>My Macbook Pro is a non-Retina Medio 2012 model and I refuse to buy something without a RJ45 connector, and also refuse to use a dongle. 802.11 is good, but not that good.
I have the opposite mentality, because I need full 802.11ac in order to max out the throughput (so the cheaper non-MIMO consumer variant is a no go).

As for RJ45 connectors, I stopped caring when I realised that the only time I needed to connect a laptop with cable was when someone at my old job had borked the wifi AP. I may remember wrong, but I also think the W530 only had Ethernet on the dock, and not on the computer itself. I may remember it wrongly though.

But yeah, if you're the same guy with a CCIE, I totally understand why you need an RJ45.

Oh sure - and I have used it, but the only places I use Linux is on appliance systems like my htpc, because unfortunately multimedia/xbmc-pvr is deprecated. Well, don't really see why it's relevant to the /sqt/ but I'll answer anyway: I got delayed by a year when doing my bachelor's (redoing some courses to get a better grade + doing some master classes in advance).

When I started my master's and realised those classes I did weren't interesting enough (so I did more courses than I needed). In addition to that, as you may notice, I started working full-time during my master's. I had to do this because of my financial situation and having an psychotic ex that kicked me out of our dormitory/student housing and on to the streets and refused to give me back my belongings, so I simply needed to work full time in order to support myself. That delayed my work on my thesis considerably, because I wasn't able to sit down and concentrate 100% on it.

It's supposed to teach me about Python 3, functions and recursions.

Am I correct in thinking that this is bad code? Why are there 2 parentheses surrounding the while condition, I thought Python 3 didn't require these?
>>
>>58373743
If you put a x8 device into a x16 slot, then it will be just x8, yes.

However, beware of the actual number of lanes from the chipset/CPU. Some motherboards only have a fixed number of lanes, allowing for example x16 + x8 OR an x8 + x8 + x8 setup

Check the layout of the mobo in the specs.

I'm looking into upgrading my laptop's OS SSD. I went through the wiki page (https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Storage_devices#Solid_State_Drive)
From what I understand, it's a question of picking an SSD that has the same connector as my current one (mSATA), a decent flash memory type and comes from a model series that have received good reviews. Then I need to buy an SSD enclosure and clone the OS SSD into the new one.

Is this correct or am I missing anything else I need to do?

Don't clone your OS using a shitty home program, they almost never work properly and selfdestruct before too long.

if it won't spin up then it's kill. You can buy VGA fan kits for any PC or electronics part shop.

Is there a (wireless) router that can be connected to a android smartphone via usb (while the phone is in usb thethering mode) and use phones 4g connection?
>>
>>58373863
Lack of data also show a lot.
If you can track everybody else, tracking the remaining is a bit easier.
Soon someone without a fb(i) account, without a smartphone and without a laptop is automatically assumed terrorist.
If you leave the stuff behind while going to the hotels, you will leave a gap in your history on the other trackers.
Google once had a way to track if a phone was lying on a table, so the user only had to input password when the phone was removed from the user.
Stuff like that could easily be implemented in more devices so they will know if you leave it all behind.
And then you have to deal with the hotels, are you paying for a room every time or are you just doing it once to find out how to get onto their wifi?
It is not a good solution.

>>

Certain files/data dont copy perfectly or get corrupted in the process, sometimes it doesn't have an effect right away and the next thing you know an important piece of your OS decides to delete itself or forgets how to work and your shit won't boot anymore. It's happened to me as soon as a month down the line.

To be fair, it's never happened to me on linux but it's not uncommon for a cloned windows system to spontaneously fail.

Are you trying to print something? The print spooler should only be doing that when you are, if not then I'd look into your print drivers, possibly uninstall them since they're doing something they shouldn't be.

Though not sure if that can account for your long boot times.

Having idled in a lot of channels on irc with developers, I can give you the answer to this: When you're using multiple OS', the list of IDEs that are fully cross-platform and work with all the features you might want across all platforms shrinks to a very small number. Add in that most developers are pretty picky about certain features, and probably also require support for solarized and all that, eventually you get to maybe 1 or 2 IDEs. For some it' easier just to stick to vi(m).

You don't need a special enclosure to clone. You just need a desktop with a couple of unused sata connections. There's nothing wrong with cloning an OS install, especially when it's from one SSD to another. Use macrium reflect, and make sure to select the entire drive so it copies all partitions, and have it verify the transfer when it's done. There's no need to have it do a sector-by-sector clone.

>How would I access that?
The same way you access any router. With the password and login ip, usually printed on the router itself unless they've changed it.

>I thought VPNs were like moving the goalposts
I have no idea what that means. But VPNs are just tools to connect you to another computer directly, usually on another network. You can pay someone to be that other end, or you can set one up yourself if you have access to another network somewhere.

Me again.

Started a small project to try to learn a few things. I want to make a program that will take a text file with several names, each on a new line, and pull the names into an array, which can then be used to compare to a user input.

So far, I've managed to get the reading of the text file working. However, when I use the loop to try to populate my array with the names, it seems to be filling each node of the array with the final name from the list.

Can anyone help me find what stupid thing I'm missing?

#include <stdio.h>

int main(int argc, char* argv[])
{
char const* const fileName = "nlist.txt";
FILE* file = fopen(fileName, "r");
char line[50];
char *nameList[50];
int i = 0;

while (nameList[i] = fgets(line, sizeof(line), file)) {
printf("%s\n", nameList[i]);
i = i +1;
}

printf("%s\n", nameList[1]);
printf("%s\n", nameList[2]);
printf("%s\n", nameList[6]);
fclose(file);

return 0;
}
>>
>>58376577

Yes!
>>
>>58377265
You're using an array instead of allocating a 50char line every time.

What you're doing in that loop is:

while (nameList[i] = fgets(line, sizeof(line), file)) {
printf([...]);
i = i + 1;
}

line is filled with the data you get, then the address of line[0] is put in nameList[i], every time the loop is executed until you get nameList[n(whatever number)] = NULL
>>
>>58377394
If what I said it's clear:

You're referencing your `char line[50]` in every value of the nameList array. Since you're also writing to the line array every time your loop runs, you're overwriting your previous lines, but still referencing the same array in every pointer inside nameList.

Okay, this might be confusing even to me. Guess I'll need to practice explaining things.

Here's a visual-ish thing:

nameList[0] = *-> line[0] (pointer to line[0])
nameList[1] = *-> line[0]
nameList[2] = *-> line[0]
...
nameList[n-1] = *-> line[0]
nameList[n] = NULL

You're writing to line at every call to fgets(line, sizeof(line), file). Whatever you wrote to it will be referenced to by all your nameList[] members.
>>
>>58377462
isn't clear*

Also possibly a game server, Savage:BFNE and Minecraft probably.

>>
Why the fuck Firefox resets volume level to maximum through some time?
>>
>>58377462
>>58377394

Ok, I think I understand what you're saying. or at least, am starting to.

So, the thing to do, would be to pass the contents of "line" to another variable, then use THAT variable to populate the n'th node of my array?

Or is this a matter of me just not understanding how pointers work?
>>
>>58377462
And here's a way to do what you want:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>

int
main(void)
{
const char * const fileName = "nlist.txt";
FILE *file = fopen(fileName, "r");
char line[50];
char *nameList[50];
int i = 0;

for (; fgets(line, sizeof(line), file) != NULL; ++i)
{
nameList[i] = strdup(line);
puts(nameList[i]);
}

[...]
return 0;
}

>>
>>58377565

Aaah, thanks.

Am I right in thinking that

nameList[i] = strdup(line);

takes the data from "line" and essentially copies it over to nameList, instead of, as I was doing, making nameList synonymous with whatever "line" is equal to at any given time?

images[9] = "bg9.jpg",
images[10] = "bg10.jpg",
document.getElementByTagName("body").style.backgroundImage = "url(" + dir + images[randomCount] + ")";

For example, networksorcery.com apparently tried to talk to me even though I've never been there. I have no clue how to read what data was sent but it seems only one way. Is there any way to access that easily?
>>
>>58377635
Not exactly.

nameList[i] = strdup(line);

does the following:

- create a new string in the heap with a copy of the line array
- return a pointer to the first character of that string
- nameList[i] is attributed that return value(pointer)
- nameList[i] now contains the address of that string copy

nameList only stores pointers. Using strdup() will create a new string in the heap(it's not associated to any variable at all) and return a pointer to it.

Read up on the malloc, calloc and realloc functions for heap memory allocation. If the name "heap" is unfamiliar to you, you might want to look into what "heap" and "stack" mean for a C program. A "heap vs stack" query should give you what you're looking for.

Putting in components (and even running the computer) without a case is pretty safe. I've run a computer bare like that for multiple months with zero special accommodations. Just rest the motherboard on top of a cardboard box, the one it comes in should be fine. NOT on top of the anti-static bag. NEVER put components on top of an anti-static bag. Beyond that, don't be a retard. Don't spill anything on it, don't smack it, don't touch it if you'll zap it with static electricity, don't put shit on top of it. Shouldn't be any problems.
