I looked very hard for my name.
Lots of ideas out there, many involving planets or roman gods. A few other types like famous people and fictional characters.

I ended up naming my computer not after fictional computers, but more obscure fictional computer types. Because the circuitry types used in different Star Trek ships actually have names nobody seems to know of.

My main desktop computer is 9 years old too. It'll be 10 in december. I still have the same motherboard and CPU and RAM as I did when I first built it, but I did change some parts along the way (added extra RAM, increasing it from 2GB to 6GB, replaced the video card because it broke)

For example my server is named the death star (space station that I 'dock' all my other computers to), my desktop is the Galactica (big, powerful, but older and not very portable), my x220 is the serenity (small, older model, super portable), and my tablet is the viper (super portable, snappy as fuck, and a lifesaver when I need it)

The most useful method I've found is close to what a lot of things get hostnamed by default. Basically you enter a unique name followed by a dash and then a short descriptor for what it actually is. I tend to use animals but it can be anything as long as the format is consistent.

gorilla-pc (gorillas are strong)
mink-laptop (minks move around a lot)
owl-router (owls see everything)
dragon-nas (dragons hoard things)
