ALRIGHT FUCKHEADS

I NEED A MECHANICAL KEYBOARD WITH LOW PROFILE CAPS SIMILAR TO THAT OF AN APPLE KEYBOARD PROFILE

BUT I ALSO NEED MECHANICAL SWITCHES TO LET ME BE A HYPER AUTIST BUT I NEED SOMETHING THAT ISNT THE NORMAL SWITCH (used to use some switch that seems to be discontinued and can't find what the fuck it was called or remember what colour. Was soft)

THE KEYBOARD ITSELF MUST ALSO BE SLIM IN FORM FACTOR

IS THERE ANY FUCKING KEYBOARD THAT HAS WHAT IM DEMANDING BECAUSE I CANNOT STAND THE NORMAL CLUNKY-ASS CAPS

CHRRY ML IS NOT LOW PROFILE ENOUGH FOR CAPS

I NEED FLATTER - SHOULD I JUST DIY EVERYTHING

mechanicalkeyboards.com sells at least one or two standard sets, but ALPS keycaps are exceedingly hard to come by.

pimpmykeyboard sells some blanks, I believe.

Razer's caps are pretty low profile, about as much as I've seen on anything remotely mechanical, they use kale switches I believe blues or something. Open one up at your local microcenter and give it a shot

Couldn't tell you what kind of switch. There was this old wiki that had a shitton of different switches and whether they discontinued it or not that had my switch in it

Been killing me that I just can't remember

>CNC case and caps
I'd probably do this if there's nothing as specific as I'm looking for

I'd make my own switches too but that's overkill despite that I CAN

Only thing I can imagine doing for making my own is using aluminum caps. I've 3d printed in metals before so I bet it would be okay if I did it again for this. Though SLS may be better of a choice

Who buys that shit? They are literally just hydrodipped or painted OEM cases for $50. And badly painted at that, the edge pooling on their lacquered offerings is atrocious.

also the default keycaps dont bleed light through the caps, so the caps are pretty good, outside of the font which is a real shame. I dont understand why chinks choose fonts like these? is it cheaper to have a more shitty font?? like come on china, get with the fucking game man.

It baffles me how you guys are okay with no numpad and sometimes even no delete key (tenkeyless and <60% shit i think they're called)

That's like something Apple would do, remove functionality in order to make the product smaller.

>>
>>58348705

I'm also a keyboard noob here, but one of the problems with companies like Corsair and Razer is that they use non-standard bottom rows for their mechanical keyboards (some buttons are smaller and larger than the industry standard).
>>
>>58348772
Why is that an issue? Legitimately curious.

>>
>>58348782

>>
>>58348790

>>
>>58348705
If you don't mind paying more then other brands like Ducky then go for it. Also read the FAQs linked in the OP next time:
7) Why does it seem like /g/ hates Razer and Corsair mechanical keyboards?
- Razer has changed from Cherry switches to Kailh switches without reducing the price of their products
- While using Kailh switches isn't inherently terrible, Razer have switched purely to increase their profits

- Corsair mechanical keyboards have a certain aesthetic to them which attracts a specific demographic
- Corsair boards use a non-standard layout for the 5th row. This makes buying after market keycap sets difficult
- There have been reports of quickly dying LEDs on certain Corsair models
- RGB versions of this keyboard have had numerous issues with drivers and flickering
>>
>>58348601
usually, delete is not removed, its home/end and sometimes PU/PD. If I dont need the Numpad, then there's really no point in having one is there?
Not everyone's line of work require a numpad anon
>>
>>58348800
Ah, my apologies. Did not read the OP fully.
>>
>>58348704
I imagine it's the same as the Tomoko i-500 since it has the same image. It uses some knockoff blue switches, but they're great. Love the keyboard.
>>
>>58348782
why pay more for worse build quality?
There is nothing wrong with their keyboard, but when Ducky uses higher quality LEDs then corsair, while also being cheaper then that really should tell you everything
>>
>>58348831
Are there RGB LEDs for custom keyboards?
>>
>>58348823

>>58342963
>>58343022
This thing looks fucking retarded and uncomfortable. Sometimes I use the left hand to enter a key on the right side and vice versa if the next letter I am typing is close to my finger at the time.

>muh faganomically made keyboard
>>
>>58348852
Ducky uses two separate PCBs, one for their switches and the other for their LEDs. I don't think you can buy a PCB like that, but you can buy mechanical switches with LEDs on them
>>
>>58348800
can confirm in LEDs dying in a year or two and their texturized WASD wears out at the same rate.

I honestly would have bought corsair if they released their k65 with other switches, white led and available in that silver color baseplate. and i also HATE red leds and dont care for rgbs. I dont understand how the market loves RED leds. hell even DAS keyboard's gaming keybaord has red only led, like wtf man
>>

Loud, easy to press. The build quality is nice, but the keycaps themselves seem a bit cheap.

There is a version with and without a numberpad if you didn't notice.

From the description on the UK link, it seems that the keyboard is only in US layout, not sure if that's an issue. I live in the US so I'm not too familiar.

This is also my first mechanical keyboard, had it about a week now.

Are you the same faggot who posted this shit on a /bst/? Why are you so triggered that people buy smaller thing that is more ergonomic and look better? You can still use everything through layers, but even if you couldn't, the numpad is useless unless you're doing heavy number work.

All of these boards have thin ABS keycaps to keep costs down. WASD (the company that sells the CODE) is particularly notorious for using some kind of paint on theirs that can flake off over time. (Though other than that, WASD boards are pretty nice in general.)

Enthusiasts prefer thick-molded and long-lasting keycaps. Caps made from PBT will retain their surface texture much longer, and dye-sublimated or doubleshot legends will last a lot longer than pad-printed legends.

If the legends wear off your keycaps and the board has some crazy layout with differently-sized modifier keys and stuff like that, you'll have a hard time finding new caps that will fit. There are pics here and there of Corsair boards where someone replaced the alphanumeric keys but kept the original modifiers and the result looks dumb and not comfortable to type on. People posting here generally don't want to suffer that fate.

So for 70 switches, you'd be paying an extra ~$100 roughly, correct? Then you have keycaps... I think if you wanted something like that, the ergodox might be a better way to measure your mkg peen.

However, if you don't like the layout of the dox, I feel like it would be an okay buy for an endgame if you can afford the price. If it was me, I'd probably just get the tada. While it does look nice and build quality looks amazing and the RGB LED lights are included, that's expensive as fuck. If you can afford it, by all means go for it. It's beautiful.
>>
>>58350007
Get some of them matias clicky switches. Loud enough to blow your eardrums out and pretty close to the same feel. I'm not sure about qc on them, but there you go.

Alternately, if you don't want to sound like a firing squad when you type, get some of them cherry clears. Same thing, but you hit the click and it gets heavier to push down.
>>

Soldering is pretty easy, I've heard. You can also order blue switches for $0.89 apiece to replace the duds.

What's nice about this is that it has arrow keys built in on the numpad. The greens are fucking HEAVY, though. If you think nearly double the weight is good, then go for it.

You can turn down the backlight, I believe. However, accessing the arrow keys is done in a layer effect where the backlight is used to distinguish whether or not the arrow keys are active.

Alternatively, you can get some of the cheap CM Storm keyboards. Pretty good on price, if you can find them in the right spot.

From there I'm seeing Kaihua at <$60. Doesn't look like great build quality, though, so be careful. Also Khail. Royal Kludge has some stuff with Khail switches too, and they're a decent board. Just poke around.

I thought tactiles were just clickies without the noise. Turns out clickies are WAY more tactile than actual tactiles. The bump feels better on blues. Especially on big buttons and spacebar.

>>
>>58352845
it's a leopold so it should be most likely a cherry mx keyboard. it might just be the fact that I was expecting something as light as a chiclet keyboard where there's barely any travel distance.

>>58352863
wrong thread kpg
>>
>>58352870
Yeah, Leopold is good. I was just checking in case you got something like a cheap chink board. The travel distance is massive compared to chiclets. If you think they're squishy, go type on a rubber dome keyboard or a membrane one, hell, even Romer G. You'll see then that there's a massive difference. Scissor switches do feel nice, i have to admit, but I'll take blues or clears any day over them.

As for the mushy feeling, there's not really a solution I know of to fix that one. You could get some O-rings to reduce travel distance, if that's what you're wanting. The're pretty cheap if you wanted to look into it.

But i only know one guy who has a mechanical keyboard, and he uses cherry red's and i don't like them. I tried going to my local computer store but he was all like "nope m8, won't let you do that".

It wasn't so bad, i did also want to try greens and clears which are hard to come by anyway. I do try and use the tester as much as i would a keyboard but not seeing a response on a screen when the key presses in does make me wonder.

Should i just do it, spend the money on a cherry clear keyboard?

I'm enjoying it.

I don't recommend it if you like highly customizable lighting. I don't even run the Logitech software because it's trash. I just configure my lighting by holding down the brightness button and 1,2,3,4,5,0, + and -.

Filco TKL or the bluetooth one.
If you want a fruity metal keyboard then there is the Varmilo VA87 or the bluetooth one
If you want something on the cheaper side while still having great build quality then a Ducky One TKL would be it.

I don't think your printer is big enough that it can 3D print huge bezels, so make it out wood

Yeh, it'd be a multi-piece build if I go with 3D printing.

I'll have to see what I can do with a router once I have one.

why would you need programming when you have the perfect HHKB layout? lol at these plebs.

a metal spring on a capacitive sensor is a mechanical mechanism

>>
>>58356635
Every keyboard that isn't a touchscreen is mechanical by definition
>>
>>58356635
so is the rubber dome
>>
>>58356649
except for rubber domes since those use the rubber dome mechanism.
There are two different definitions for rubber domes. One is the actuating mechanism and the other is a dome made of rubber
>>
>>58356667
which is a mechanism of actuation, rubber dome is mechanical.
>>
>>58356687
its just a pad on a membrane. That isn't mechanical at all. You do have hybrid switches
>>
>>58356723
by that logic a topre switch isn't a mechanical switch either, it's a variable capacitor.
>>
>>58356738
no by that logic topre is mechanical since it doesn't use pads at all
>>
>>58356748
topre isn't mechanical switch because it does NOT complete a circuit, it only changes capacitance.
>>
>>58356773
So membrane keyboards are mechanical?
>>
>>58356773
neither does the model F, or the old beamsprings yet those are still mechanical.
>>
>>58356784
not really, but since he was trying to be a smartass about semantics I just followed his logic, a topre switch does not use mechanical actuation to close a circuit, it just changes capacitance which within the correct threshold triggers the microcontroler to open or close a circuit.
>>

>>58355971
>>58356001
What's this board that you're talking about?
>>
>>58356811
You never followed my logic. A mechanical switch has moving metal parts and that's it
>>
>>58356832
you have no idea what a mechanical switch is, stop embarrassing yourself.
>>
>>58356841
neither do you apparently
closing a circuit is a different subject rather then a machined part
>>
>>58356811
While I agree with your statement about how Topre works, what does this make the model m? Given that it uses membrane sheets.

>>58356832
The term "mechanical" does not preclude metal parts. Anything with moving parts is mechanical by the very definition of the word.

Does anyone else look down on Cherry MX plebs? Cherry switches (and by extension, gats too) are the rubber domes of the mechanical switch world.

>massively available
>on practically every single "mechanical keyboard" you can buy
>not very tactile
>fine for gaming; terrible for hardcore typing

If you aren't in the White ALPs, Buckling Spring or other extremely tactile switches that spring back up and allow you're hands to rest at ease when not typing club, you don't have the right to call yourself a mechanical keyboard enthusiast.

The only good modern switch is the Matias Clicky ALP.
>>
>>58356871
This, plastic gears are still gears the issue, is Trope is a membrane and a spring, there's no " mechanism"
>>
>>58356912
Apart from the mechanism where you press down on the switch and the rubber dome makes it pop back up?
>>
>>58356908
alps>cherry>matias
I thought the same thing too, until I tried out that switch and it feels nothing like old vintage alps.
>>
>>58356935
I agree that they don't compare to old ALPs but they are superior to most cherries (gat greens is a close tie) that I've used (blues, reds, browns, clears). Are you sure that you used their clicky switch? I hate their other switches but their "Clicky ALP" is acceptable.
>>
>>58356908
enjoy your carpel tunnel with those fucking absurdly heavy switches, rubber dome elite god race
>>
>>58356969
I thought matias only has clicky and linear switches. I didn't like how they were so wobbly compared to cherry switches. They do feel better if you hit them perfectly centered, but I'm not that perfect
>>58357007
you do realize most rubberdomes are just as heavy or heavier then mechanical switches
>>
my realforce 87u was delivered today so it's my first time ever trying topre and I am so fucking disappointed... I've had IBM Model M's with rubber domes that felt very similar and some BTC keyboards too. Might return this or sell it on.
>>
>>58356932
If it's just a spring it's not a mechanism, there are no mechanical moving parts, it's just tension.
>>
>>58357007
The wrist is more strained whenever you need to keep your fingers hovering over the keys. This extends the tendons in your wrist.

High actuation force means you can rest your fingers with comfort on the keyboard. My wrists are relaxed. You'll be the one with Carpel Tunnel.
>>
>>58357180
proper typing requires you to rest you arms and hover your hand over the keyboard. If you rest your wrists then you'll get rsi
>>
>>58357109
why were you expecting anything different than a rubber dome if topre uses a rubber dome?
>>
>>58357216
I didn't mention wresting the wrist. I mentioned resting the fingers on the keyboard so it doesn't extend the tendons in the wrist. You're talking to the king of ergonomics right here.
>>
>>58357225
The Model M rubber dome has no spring beneath it, and it uses a membrane. I thought the springs underneath the domes on topre boards would make it feel much better but truth me told it doesn't. The only thing topre has going for it is how incredibly smooth the switches are. Apart from that they're a meme.
>>
How do those cheap Tomoko boards compare to say Leopold?

The idea of another full sized board for $50 is really tempting, but if the quality is significantly worse I'd just pay for something better.
>>
>>58357531
leopold has low profile thicc PBT keycaps while tomoko uses thin OEM ABS keycaps with that ugly font. Leopold is also a pretty hefty keyboard that's made with sturdy plastics. The tomoko isn't as good, but it's still a great keyboard
>>
>>58357531
I'm typing on a Tomoko now. It's the tenkeyless version, but I'm pretty sure it's identical otherwise. It's the only mechanical keyboard I've ever used so I'm not sure how much help I'll be here.

The keys are raised above a black metal plate, the rest of the keyboards is made of tough plastic. It has big rubber feet, including on the props, and even this compact one has a nice weight to it.

However even as my first mechanical keyboard, the keycaps seem very cheap. Very thin and and the lettering is without a doubt going to wear off. They are noticeably cheaper than the membrane keyboard I was using prior.

Other than, I love it. If you can deal with the cheap keycaps or don't mind spending money to replace them, it's great.

Sounds like it would be decent work board since I don't have to type a ton, but if I have to replace the keycaps with a decent pbt set anyways I may as well just pay the difference for a Leopold. Especially considering my current daily driver is a Leopold, and has been my daily driver for 6+ years.
