Why is the icon style different for the system tray different for the quick launch?
It seems like they went for a flat theme with simple features so they can be viewed in a single color.
For some reason, they did not do this for internet explorer and the file manager.
If it was some 3rd party application, I could forgive this, but they should be able to send a message to the other people within the graphics department.

I think the gaps is there to give the impression that there is space to waste.
In that picture there is a large gap between the left and right tiles.
Usually this is done by having a transparent window. This is a special case of waste that people only do so it looks good in screenshots.
Tiling window managers rarely makes sense when you realize all applications are run in full screen.
