But but but, in such a society I should be FREE to run whatever OS and software I want, and if that happens to be Windows then what, I get slammed and lambasted because I exercise my FREEDOM to run whatever the fuck I want.

Ports is not "literally the best package management system ever". Ports is a glorified shell scripts that will fetch some source code from a mirror and compile it.
>>
>>58296019

>>
>>58296033
You've never even tried BSD. I used BSD full time on the job about 14 years ago. It was good, and it's still good on the server side, but it has nowhere near the hardware support and user support of Linux.

>>

Because you didn't make even a single supporting statement to your claim that '[bsd] already [has] literally the best package management system ever'. It's obvious you have limited experience with it.

>and why exactly would you need the hardware support for devices you don't have or will never have?
Sounds like you know exactly what hardware you'll need for the rest of your life, and you never get any new hardware unexpectedly. Good for you, but that's an atypical use case.
>>
>>58296116
you don't do it though so you obviously don't know what you're talking about. stick to your binaries as i have previously said.

KeepassX uses kdb files, Keepass2 uses kdbx files which aren't backwards compatible.
Me, I use Linux 90% of the time anyway so I just manage my passwords in the kdb file (KeepassX), then make a read-only kdbx copy for the Windows installation by importing the kdb file into Keepass2.
>>

Only the old versions of keepassx use the kdb files. The newer Keepassx2 uses kdbx files only and offers a one way conversion for kbd files.

Why does ubuntu automatically lock the root account if that's considered to be a bad thing?
>>
>>58302131
1. it doesn't, it just doesn't have a proper password set up for it.
2. it's kind of a security measure: every linux system has a root user. If it's "unusable" because no password (note: no password=/=empty password) attackers cannot use it that easily, and your normal user account could be anything.

correct me if I'm wrong.
>>
>>58302131
Ubuntu assumes (rightfully so!) that the user is dumb and does not have the mental capacity to remember two strong passwords, so instead they hope he will at least make the effort to remember one strong password.

General consensus actually goes towards sudo being the inferior solution period but as with most stuff it's balance between security and convenience.

You are all completely stupid. Debian is outdated and insecure. More over, it's just a noobuntu spin that was made to attract power users. All it's maintainers are SJW and the distro is sponsored by jews and the liberal media.
The Debian project shows through it's public statements and manifests that it's clearly no aligned with the moral Christian values that made the US the great nation it came to be.
It's degenerate.

Arch Linux is superior to it in every way. It has bleeding edge packages, what means more stability and security, since you get all the last bug fixes.
It's rolling release, it doesn't randomly breaks during version updates.
It's also more configurable and extensible. On overall you just have more control over your computer.
Anyone that is serious about their OS uses Arch.

My backup drive is full now however and I need to free up some space. I realise that rsnapshot works extensively with hardlinks which pretty much stops me from just deleting a few of the oldest backups.

Wat do? Can I just reduce the retention number and run the backup again or will it not delete folders?

I always use apt-get when using the command line.

They are very similar command line tools available in Trusty. apt-get and apt-cache's most commonly used commands are available in apt.

apt-get may be considered as lower-level and "back-end", and support other APT-based tools. apt is designed for end-users (human) and its output may be changed between versions.

Note from apt(8):

"The `apt` command is meant to be pleasant for end users and does not need to be backward compatible like apt-get"

If you want a more "pleasant" end user experience, then use a GUI interface for apt. I really like synaptic. Picture related

>>
>>58307386
because the ecosystem of linux is evolving all the time.

Putting "minimum ubuntu 12.04" is exactly the same sa putting "minimum windows 7".
It sets a certain threshold for your distribution to meet on the timeline of technologies used on linux for the software to work.
by putting 12.04 the developer can expect from you that in order for your stupid manchild hobby to work it certainly will need/make use of pulseaudio, it may need to be over a certain version of xorg or the kernel for it to work or other components of linux.
you may soon encounter the number to be higher because games will be developed with wayland/mir in mind and older distributions that still use Xorg will not meet the requirement.

A child could figure it out.

the purpose of using linux on a server is to set it up, make everything happen on it's own and forget about it save for the occasional security update

Nice meme.

>Will I have any driver issues?
Yeah, linux is a fucking piece of shit that barely works. Don't expect to get it to even a slight semblance of stability within the first week.
>>
>>58308922
it should work, just install the drivers.
ubuntu is your best shot when it comes to hardware compatibility.

but then again ideapad is consumer-tier trash so mileage may vary

>consumer-tier trash
what the fuck is this even supposed to mean? non-producer-tier trash?
>>

lurk more

Ironic.

>>
>>58309009
are you implying you made every single piece of hardware you currently own?

This is not how paging file works.
Some applications write in swap constantly because of their architecture, and it it is not present, they can fail.
>>
I really want linux to become better but it's still second or even third class tier trash. There is literally no reason to use it when OS X exists.
>>
>>58308611
So 8gb swap partition on 256gb SSD or 1tb HDD in ultrabay?
>>
>>58309446
always on the fast drive
>>
>>58309423
>it needs to be my special snowflake desktop OS to be good
You are the cancer that is damaging GNU/Linux, warping it into something that it's not meant to be. This is why shitstemD and other poorly written bloated garbage is becoming rooted in the main codebase
>>
>>58309561
Don't fucking reply to him.

Look up in this thread, everytime os x is mentioned ITT it's the same faggot baiting.
Just ctrl +f os x

>>58309587
I don't follow enough with the posts here to know
Sorry for feeding it
>>
>>58309561
why though? I enjoy it a lot more than Linux.
>>
>>58309561
I love systemd. What's so bad about it? I don't care about your ideals since I'm mainly a windows user.
