IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I have an x220 on the way and also IBM stickers to replace the Lenovo ones. Anyone who's done this swap got any advice on getting the old ones off without fucking up the case? Thanks!
>>
>>58261318
Which of the newer thinkpads is most /tpg/ approved?
I've got an x60 right now that I'm generally a fan of, main things I would like improved are the processor and battery life. Looking on the Lenovo site it seems like a lot have meme keyboards and from what I've heard on here they're moving to worse build quality?
Is there anything recent with the classic keyboards, well built cases, rectangular shape (no rounded corners), matte screen, etc.? I basically just want an x60 but faster/longer lasting.
>>
>>58262866
I don't think you're going to find anything like you're looking for, but I honestly think that /g/ hating the new Thinkpads is just in relation to the old ones, not in relation to other current laptops. I'm personally pretty pumped for the T470, but I would have preferred a x270 that had a TB3 port (unlike the T470 and co, it seems to just be standard usb type-c on 3.1 or something)

/tpg/, I was pretty sold on T520 but I'm starting to consider T420(s) or X220. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Budget is around 200€ (without the upgrades), could be expanded but eh.
What I'd use it for is back-end web development (XAMPP/Valet/Homestead + some editor) and watching movies on a train/bus (mostly in browser).
Given I'm using win at home and mac at work, I want to put some linux distro on it.

Cheers upfront.
>>
>>58265362
I'm afraid not. With the X series, you're stuck with 1366x768 since the x200 era until I think the x240 would be the first to offer FHD? If not x240, then x250.

I use 1366x768 on the x220, and really with a 12 inch screen that's sort of ideal. If you want more though, you'll have to either buy a newer (and more expensive) Thinkpad, or move up to the T-Series, where the T420/30 have a 1600x900 option.
>>
>>58265637
Ah that really sucks.
I can live with a 1366x768 display if I have to. Not particularly ideal for programming however.
I just adore the keyboards on the X220, can't stand the chiclet keys on later models.
>>

there are mods available to get a higher res panel in there, but the custom boards aren't cheap, have a waiting list, and involve a fair amount of soldering. the average /tpg/ shitposter probably won't be putting the work in.

and really, the x220 is still just a nice, inexpensive, 6 year old laptop. don't make a money pit out of it. get an ips for porn on the go, then plug it into a monitor at home
>>
>>58265739
Good find for the price.
>>
>>58265656
Yeah, that's why I mentioned how even with the x230 you'd be screwed though. If the x230 had a FHD panel, you could replace its keyboard with the x220's, but alas they're more or less the exact same machines, just with the next gen cpu and new keyboard.

Anybody with T420 running windows 8.1 on it?
How's the driver support? What's your experience with it?
I have mSata SSD mPCI ExpressCard, and was thinking of installing Win8.1 on it for some "games" and other windows specific applications.
And to bypass airport security.

>Anybody with T420 running windows 8.1 on it?

It's fine. I had to download some drivers from the win7 section, but they still work fine.
I just can't set the battery threshold, and 1 or 2 fn buttons don't work.

Well, I was kinda in the wrong here, I don't have working the ones on F3, F5, F6, F8 and on space. Maybe it can be fixed, I didn't really bother.
>>
>>58269245
Oh.
I'm not using those in the first place, and all have software control anyway.
Will 4 GB of RAM and i5 2520m and iGPU be enough to run Win8.1 smooth enough?

Not sure if this question belongs here, but recently I bought a T460p and it came with an OEM BIOS key for Windows 7.

I tried installing Windows 10 but it would just take the OEM Windows 7 key from the BIOS and KMSpico couldn't activate it because "this key is already being used in another computer".

What else can I do?

Okay, it seems that I had in BIOS Config - Power - Adaptive Thermal Management in «Balanced», not «Maximize Performance».
Now it is on 92-93 degrees in Team Fortress 2 without throttling, it's enjoyment to play. (But temps that high are still bothering me)

I wish I could, but my X220 throttles even with thermal paste change. Which made me run some tests w/ turbo boost on/off, and with it off, there appears to be a 15% decrease in mutli-threaded performance, and a 20% decrease in single-threaded performance in real-world applications. Pic related

This is a significant performance hit, and what make it even more unfortunate is the CPU throttles regardless, just that it takes longer for it to reach critical temps.

+99 internets to you sir.
Can you play effectively on line on this?
Or do humans destroy you?
>>
>>58273766
On Linux, if you're using the intel_pstate driver, then simple editing
/sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo
to 1 will disable it. Reverts on restart. Strangely enough, on my system some applications don't honor it or somehow trigger it.
>>
>>58273903
I haven't tried with humans. I usually just play with a keyboard and mouse (but have tried with the trackpoint a few times).

It's harder to micro, but it's fun to play a casual match with an AI while in bed.

x230 has rapid charge, much better cpu (in terms of power consumption, performance and amount oh generated heat), gpu (like twice as fast as randy bridge one). Plus it accepts 2133MHz RAM.
If you don't like the shitlet keyboard you can replace it with standard x220 one. This takes like 10 minutes.

>>
Any good thinkpad netbooks, i have a netbook fetish. (talking 11 inches or less)
>>
>>58275615
you can always scale down 4k to fhd, not like the backlight sucks up any more power because of the resolution...

most power consumption of the screen comes from whatever backlight tech they are using and the brightness you're running at

higher resolutions will suck up more power because it takes more processing power to run it

the resolution and pixels on their own don't impact power consumption a significant amount

What's real? The picture or my conclusion?
Usually other laptop producers like Dell sticks 3200mAh cells to their battery packs, limits the max voltage (so it limits the capacity to about ~2800) and it's designed that way to last much, much more charging cycles when charged to 100%.
Lelnovo sticks 2800mAh cells to their shit batteries and tells you to limit max charge percentage by yourself, so you end up having like 2500mAh per cell if you care about lifespan and you limit it by yourself in power manager.
Also single fucking temperature sensor glued to the nearest cell, while it should be over the center.

Tested battery was the 55++ T520 model from 2011. I also checked one of 70++ T430 models from end of 2015 and it looks exactly same inside.
Fucking lelnovo dirty chinks. IBM PLEASE MAKE THINKPADS GREAT AGAIN

Already have a nice desktop so I'm looking to get a laptop for travel, web-browsing and video. I guess light gaming but it'd be older stuff like HoMM3 and the like.

>>58279468
Same as changing the thermal paste, as you have to take the entire motherboard out, as well as the screen at its hinges. Lenovo has breakdown sheets for everything. Might have to swap in the CMOS battery.
>upgrading to an i7 motherboard
You'll pay a premium (near double last I checked) compared to i5 motherboards for one USB 3.0 port, minor performance increase, and worst temps. Better to get an expresscard USB 3.0 adapter and stick with i5 board, although I can't vouch for the performance compared to native USB.
>>
>>58279953

>Better to get an expresscard USB 3.0 adapter and stick with i5 board, although I can't vouch for the performance compared to native USB.

I actually did some searching myself to find out what Expresscard version is in my x201t. It really depends on whatever Expresscard version is in >>58279468 x220.

If it's Expresscard v1, it's only 2.5Gbps via PCIe. USB 3 is specced at 5Gbps. If it is Expresscard 2.0, it comes with one PCIe 1.0 2.5Gb/s lane and a USB 3 lane. Once again it also depends on which Expresscard 2.0 because there was the option for PCIe 2.0 which is also 5Gbps. It's confusing as fuck.

Also gotta make sure if the Expresscard to USB 3 adapter is using Expresscard v1 or 2.0. But regardless, if it has Expresscard 1.0 like my x201t, putting an Expresscard to USB 3 adapter on it will still give you around 250MB/s of actual usage which should be plenty. Hard drives typically max out at 100MB/s anyways for sequential read/write speeds.

>>58280422
My expresscard to usb 3 does the same thing, it makes the left palm rest warm and I'm not even using it. It may very well be wasting battery power so I usually take it out now. It's actually really annoying since I don't like my wrists being on hot surfaces when typing.

I guess I'll bring it around but not use it.

Yes way. People never believe me when I say MGSV is insanely well optimized but it is. GZ (which I prefer) doesn't work for some reason though. At 1280x720 you get 20fps during regular gameply, at 1024x568 you get a perfectly livable really consistent 25fps - MGSV's strange in that even graphically intense scenes don't reduce FPS much, must be some kind of interesting behind the scenes optimization.

Just the default wacom stylus that comes with with the X200 tablet PC. Not sure about the model number.

did you try disabling touch input
>>
>>58288303
I need it on. I'm googling for the solution and I all I see are complaints about the same thing. I remember fixing it years ago but I recently moved over to an SSD and it came back. I even clean installed and the ghost touches are popping up.

I just hope some anon here has dealt with this.

Right now I'm going to try if a 90w charger makes any difference.

So if I have HD5500 I should run MGSV smoothly ?
>>
>>58272735
OMG this looks so comfy though! I wouldn't mind living in that.
>>
>>58273575
Easy solution this is to just have another hard drive booting Windows as the main. That is what I have on my X230t. SSD running Windows 10 and an mSATA running Xubuntu

You and me both. The problem though is where you would park. I'm guessing rv park? Trailer park?
>>
How much could I pick an x60 up for?
>>
>>58288651
A lot of folks just park overnight at Walmarts and whatever. Yeah thats a good question though.I am currently looking at buying a house and right now I don't see anything that is appealing without signing myself up for a HUGE mortgage. These things are cheap a lot of times and very livable. Maybe one day when I'm retired I can just move to some park with the wife and live there full time in this.

Got bored, I don't need an X230 or anything more than my x220 so stopped searching for now, might do more later

I had found though that the X230 has a mini display port, which should fit into an X220's base as the hole for the standard displayport is bigger, and that the X230 also has no screwholes in its VGA port, which I don't know if it would fit into an X220's base, which might mean messing with the X220 base or buying an X230 base as well as just the motherboard.

I guess the next main step would be to look up disassembly of X230 and compare it to X220, and find out about the palmrest and if the video connection for screen is the same.

I have an old Thinkpad R60 that sporadically changes brightness and makes hissing sounds when charged for longer periods of time. What's going on with it?
>>
X201T or X220T?
>>
>>58286847
What is inside that ultrabase?
And are you tapping the base power circuit to power the device?
>>
Anyone know where I can pick up a decent t61p or better in London? Ebay listings are shite
>>
>>58288939
I have a X230. It has screw holes in the VGA port.
>>
>pull the trigger on an used X220T
>it fit very very tight inside my budget but at least I got one with an i7 and a 320 GB hard drive preinstalled
>it's from some German reseller who puts them back in condition and then sell them again (I live in Belgium)
>it all looks fine, says that the unit I'm getting might have visual marks but should in no way get in the way of the device working (That's all I care about anyway, I need something to work with, not a decoration object)
>pay trough PayPal, get the bill
>footnote in German : "Minor fractures on the housing! These affect their proper functioning and stability!"

What did they mean by this? Did I just pay 250€ for an unit that's sliced in half? It arrives at my doorstep in roughly 4 days, but if it does end up being broken, how simple is it to fix? I really don't want to go trough the trouble of sending it back after I managed to catch one.
>>
>>58289165
Should mention that my question is "How simple is it to fix a X220T overall", not "Is it simple to fix this undetermined problem".
>>
>>58289165
You got ripped off. It's going to be fucked up. If it's just the chassis, you can replace that. But if you were already stretching your budget then you're shit out of luck.
>>
>>58289210
Well, at least they say in the listing that I can return it for any reason I want and that they pay the cost of shipping, so I guessat least there's that.
>>
>>58283658
Nice, specs?
>>
>>58289165
Why didn't you go with kapaza or 2dehands? Or if you're not an AZERTY fag - marktplaats punt nl?

Genuinely curious.
>>
what would be the reason for a t430s's wifi switch to stop working ? drop ? There's a decent one with 2 batteries, 8gb, 128gb ssd for 200 euros

I'm pretty new to ThinkPads and just got my x220 set up. Only issue is it could use a new battery, what is the consensus for best place to snag one in good condition?
>>
>>58289029
X220t, it's newer and overall better.
>>
>>58289446
Any reputable seller on Amazon, eBay is harder to find the legit ones but they can be costly and are likely the real thing. Just pay with PayPal and you'd be good.
>>
>>58289336
I was originally after a T420 , for which I did go on 2dehands, but found back then that prices on eBay were a little better than there. After much reconsideration (notably the T420's notoriously bad screen and the fact that I don't have a drawing tablet anymore) I decided to go for a X220T instead (Had a heavily used Portege R400 before and loved it) and I just went for a listing on eBay without thinking about it (which was a big mistake considering the listing I just found on 2dehands).

At worst, I can just send it back and get my money back, with which I could buy that other one and still have money for food for a month.

Best GNU/Linux distro that just werks on ThinkPads?
>>

I want one exactly like that, in great condition.
>>
>>58289517
Mint.
>>
>>58289532
lol i am using xubuntu right now and i am getting system errors and you expect mint to not break? ahaha
>>
>>58288275
Really? I have it and I can already see it damaging the screen.

Finally got my new dankpad (t420s) setting up for windows 7 but I was wondering if any of you could help me out with an issue that I'm having. I installed usb drivers and all work except for the powered yellow usb port on the back and no matter how many times I redownload the drivers it will not work. Anyone have any experience have a similar problem?
>>
>>58273024
They work in my vape so shut the fuck up, don't even k.
>>
>>58289896
It's fucked. Open the laptop and swap the little board for a new one.
>>
>>58289923
the only thing with that is that when I plug in a device like a usb muse or something windows notifies me meaning it's recognized but then I receive a note saying that my drivers have been installed incorrectly so I don't think that's the reason.
>>
>want 4 cell battery for X201 Tablet
>full PC with 4 cell bettery is 70% more cost

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X201-Tablet-PC-Laptop-2985FSU-/262761884435?hash=item3d2dd42b13:g:gbIAAOSw2xRYUMN~

Batteries are about $50 new and that used X201 Tablet with battery sold for about $85. I have an 8-cell right now but the bulge is a bit unsightly and not sleek enough.

Cool fuckin' machine though, especially with Ubuntu and an SSD. Battery lasts a long time.

> Backlight on T510 stopped working
> Tested with different panel: no backlight either
I figured the only other possibility was a blown fuse on the motherboard, but the fuses near the display connector (F1 and F6) seem to be fine according to my multimeter. F6 had some white powdery stuff around one of the sides though.

Any idea what else could cause the backlight to fail? The LCD cable maybe?

ok, my elitebook is dinged to hell and my touchpad buttons are falling off, thing is that to replace the mouse buttons you need a new frame. I'll be getting a thinkpad seeing as I am autistic and care about aesthetics only. Where do I either
