Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I think I'll cop the new T470 when it's available - if it won't have any QC issues, that is. Does it have any glaring flaws, apart from the shitty screen?

Help with my X220T tablet, if anyone has had this problem please help

I'm getting random touches on my screen and it only happens when it's 100% and on the charger, I've been trying to fix it all day today and yesterday, updating drivers and whatnot and still it is fucking up.

>>
>>58291679
you are a godsend anon, I'll start my search now, I have to look for an unmolested 8470 at a reasonable price.
>>
>>58291785
The usual problems with used 8470p are:

Bent corners. People are retards and drop them a lot, it seems. It's magnesium and therefore can be unbent. Harder than aluminium and softer than steel, but it's easier to unbend it to its original state compared with aluminium. I did it myself with mine.

Scratched magnesium on the back of the screen. Not much to be done there.

Hardened paste in the GPU if it is dedicated. HP used shitty paste for it, it seems. Change it and it's all good.

Broken screen latch button. Again, people seem to be retarded. I don't even know how the fuck it's possible to break the thing, it's solid as fuck. (Usual problem with T430's too.)
>>
>>58291871
Yeah, the 8460p I have has almost everything you mentioned since it was my stepdad's and he was always showing off the 1000 pounds resistance thing. he's done the following to this computer : Spilled coffee on it, stood on top of it, put it in his briefcase and chipped the metal to shit , be disgusting so all of the plastic is discolored to shit. It's such a shame because I really like this computer and it's weight, I have to say goodbye to it :'(
>>
>>58291934

Is there anything else worth considering (e.g ultrabooks) if I want a little machine to take with me that I can work on in the train?
Currently deciding between x230, HP 2570p or Dell E6230. My budget is like $200-250 AUD though. I know the 14" is probably the better form factor but that's why I want to know whether a 13" ultrabook might be worth considering. Though, I guess they won't be that cheap either.
>>
Is it common for the plastic on the upper edge of the screen to slowly break off on the X220?

Is this fixable/replaceable?
>>
>>58293747
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Install_Classic_Keyboard_on_xx30_Series_ThinkPads

tl;dr: T420, X220, T520 keyboards work in the T430, X230, T530. You need to tape some pins on the keyboard ribbon flex, file down some bits of metal on the keyboard, and then you need to download a program on Windows or use a bit of terminal magic on Linux to get keys properly working
>>
>>58294397
It's the classic thinkpad reliability
Get a toshiba next time
>>
>>58294438
You do not need to file anything down if you also replace the palmrest with the same version as your keyboard.

I'm currently at the intermediate stage of haven't yet gotten around to patching the EC and it's all cool, all FN use doesn't work and my precious tab forward and tab backward keys are not yet implemented but it's already a huge improvement.
>>
>>58291448
X201T here. Don't have the same issue myself but I remember having a tough time getting my screen to work the way I wanted. does the problem still happen if you:
- clean the screen.
- disable the track point
- adjust touchscreen sensitivity (not sure if this is an option on your model)
>>
>>58294717

bit expensive imo as its stock, has no finger print scanner (not needed but cool if you find a cheap one with it) and it's the 1300 res not the 1600 res one. Getting the 1600 res is imperative.

again the t420 might look and feel old (in a good way) but once you get it and install a light os on it it'll work flawlessly. As I said before, throw in an ssd and some ram and you're golden, 3 drives and 16gb ram is what you'll eventually end up with I reckon as tinkering/upgrading a thinkpad just tends to happen.

this seems pretty decent
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-T420s-14-LED-HD-laptop-core-i5-2-5GHz-4GB-500GB-Windows-7-Thinkpad-Dock-/201747311498?hash=item2ef913ab8a:g:j0IAAOSwA3dYCT0h#viTabs_0

you need to change the wifi card on t420 to install hackintosh though and i've heard it's a bit finicky but I think most people upgrade the wifi card anyway. I always get bad wifi when i'm doing a shit upstairs so i'm gonna upgrade mine but it might just be my t420, I dunno.

My only issue with Windows 7 SP1 is that you need to run WSUS offline updater otherwise the damn system will have one svchost process eating the processor because it's Windows updating.
Right now clean installs of Windows 7 bogs to shit when updating, as if it will take a week to get it up to date (exaggeration).
It dropped my E7440's battery life to 3 hours and ran hot as shit.
Windows 8.1 works well and at least updating the bastard isn't a lengthy process

On Linux (n00buntu flavors) I've used Wine or Play on Linux to use Windows only programs.
Not all of them work, as Sony Vegas didn't work, however I was able to use Photoshop CC 2015 on my Linux Mint X1C3 when I had it.

I havent used Office, but iirc keygen/kmspico didnt work on the fucker.
>>
>>58302115
The other way to update Windows 7 is by integrating the whole roliup package into the ISO and some hotfixes. It worked for me.
>inb4 telemetry/botnet
then integrate manually all the updates and skip the ones that include telemetry.

What is your budget & size/form factor you want?
Photoshop benefits a bit from having nVidia GPUs because of them CUDA cores. That could kinda push back getting an Elitebook because most of them have AMD GPU's except some w models.

Last month (year lol) a fellow was in the market for a tablet computer, and asked about the Yoga 2 Pro. He was gonna spend $600 - 750 on one locally and I looked up ebay rates. He was surprised they can be bought from $400 to 500 easily.

The corners of the palm rest crack but that's not a huge deal. Not a fan of the touchpad, so I just use the clit. The battery life's degraded over the years so I recommend getting a fresh battery if you can. I'm a dumbass and did light gaming on it for a while, which it clearly wasn't built to handle. Runs pretty hot now as a consequence, but that's fixable with some thermal paste I just haven't gotten around to applying. Touch screen works great. I am about to upgrade a few components on my Thinkpad T520 and I have a few questions:

1. For the RAM, do I need to seek out laptop-sized ram?

2. While opening up my Thinkpad's keybed I noticed that a small blue wire runs on top of the mSATA port, and it is pretty stiff and hard to move. Would this be a problem if I installed an mSATA SSD? I understand that SSDs can get pretty hot, so im kind of worried about melting that wire.

Also, for reference here is a T520 spec page from the ThinkWiki:

But how fast would the speeds be if I was to connect a hard drive or SSD to the DVD drive? I am guessing it's also at SATA II speeds...? I have no idea.

im gonna replace my thinkpad x200t's motherboard with an x201t's. anything i should expect before hand?

I just saw a MINT T420 in the repair shop while I got my computer serviced. I asked the guy about it and the guy said it belonged to a kid who only plays on it, i opened it and the keyboard was trashed with keys missing, everything else intact. I told the guy to notify the owner that someone wants to purchase that stinkpad. God, they are sexy in person
>>
>>58309903
what do you mean sawing? i saw people on forums saying it was p much a perfect fit

Anyone use the Thinkpad branded yoga? Was looking for something to work on that can at least handle some games as well (cities skylines of overwatch as an example, low settings are fine). Looked at the 15 inch model.

Is my sticker cool?
>>
>>58309976
looks nice. could be a bit better though if all the sickers were straight, but i wouldn't mess with them cause you might have the glue stick on the case and it look like poop. but other than that really nice

useful source for unix stickers imho, haven't ordered from them but they seem nice.

hey /tpg/

I am trying to get a X201 with a 1440x900 screen, but I haven't had any luck finding this grail yet.

How much of a downgrade would an IPS X220 be compared to that?
I want to get a cute lil guy to complement my T420.
>>
>>58309976
no
>>
>>58294334
look around for an x220 for about 200, then just put in more RAM and maybe even a new ssd.
Quality small shitposting/schoolwork machine.

different anon here, but is it possible to buy an optical drive and put it into an empty caddy?
>>
>>58309678
Alright, one more question which I forgot.

For Windows 7, what are the most important drivers for the Thinkpad? There are dozens upon dozens on Lenevo's website, its hard to tell which ones to use.

Would the quick scan be suffice?
>>
>>58309976

>>58309852
Looks pretty good. Only downside is it might be a budget model, but those keyboards are alright for rubber dome ones.

IIRC you can swap them in the BIOS. I like it though personally.

But why?
>>
>>58310688
You can swap them in BIOS however I recommend getting used to it because if you think about it it actually makes more sense to have FN at the corner.
My thought process whenever I want to use Fn hotkeys whether to pause music, turn off screen, etc... is to simply hit the lower corner button and the key I want

Just picked up a t520
Guy posted it on CL as a t420, for $145. When I got there, he said he'd still take $145, then I noticed the screen flickers when you move the lid a certain way. So he took off $25.
So all in all, $120 for a t520

How'd I do /g/? Also, what could be the screen issue?

Bought a refurbished X200 months ago because I need a cozy notes/business/brief drafting machine that could fit in small packages.

Came with Windows 7 Professional, cost about 100 bucks. Certainly don't regret it even though its not as good of a deal as I've heard of in this thread (i.e. people getting 220's for closer to 50)

A ding to the frame here. A crack on the frame around the monitor near one of the hinges. A nipple that occasionally sticks but is easily countered (this is more of an issue because no trackpad). CoreTemp shows average temperatures of the processor during the things i use it for averaging around 40C, neither core exceeding 50C.

The cover for the LEDs behind the monitor so i have some scotch tape covering those three holes for safety reasons.

Ordinary usage gives me about 5-6 hours on battery when I don't even fret about power saving settings.

Took me a while to realize that it wasn't *that* bad at boot ups, but that it couldn't do hibernation normally. Waking up from hibernation, a program more intensive than notepad that had a window up would be (not responding) then from anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes.

Its not nearly as bad now if I instead just use sleep or just shut the thing off entirely. Turning on from a complete shutdown takes 90 seconds to get to full usability such as opening word or opening a browser and having an effective internet connection.

This thing is so small but at least the vertical pixel resolution is as high as 800 and the keyboard is cozy as fuck and even if this thing had a trackpad I'd never use it.

This old thinkpad meme is bretty good.

Ram/Memory for laptops are typically SoDimms which are physically different than memory for a desktop. They will be smaller and are installed with catches on their side (spring loaded sometimes).

He's right about the antenna. Just uninstall it then do your business and reinstall. It should pop on and off usually.

Drivers you should be able to zero in on your model specific drivers as well as distinguish hardware from that point forward. Quick scan might work for you but more than likely it's like all others and just let's you know what is already installed and if it has updates.

Just bought my first x230, got it in the mail today. $230 on amazon. Small corner ding. Fresh Windows 10 pro install. The is the first place I've been on the internet with it.

excuse me, i did not mean caddy, I meant the hole in the ultrabase where a HDD caddy would go
I don't know if it's a special lenovo optical drive, or whether any slim drive would work :^)
>>
It's quite easy, friendo.

You just download the ISO for the GNU/Linux / BSD distribution of your preference, write it onto a USB drive and install it. Windows and security are orthogonal, I am afraid.
