Why is NetworkManager such a steaming pile? I guess I haven't completely ruled out other things, but this is getting silly.

Sometimes when I log in (Arch, i3) it takes an extra five-ten seconds for i3bar to show up, and whenever that happens Networkmanager won't connect, even after restarting the service. the log doesn't give anything useful either, just something like authenticating -> disconnected.
I can't think of anywhere else to look for error messages.

Used to be able to background startup processes just by adding a & to the startup script command. Sorry, haven't used arch for a couple years.
Don't know how to do it using systemd though.
Try searching the wiki or google for backgrounding a startup process.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>58264711
Get an Ubuntu flavor.
>>
>>58264754
I was trying to refrain from this because it's seen as a "kiddie" OS, but looks like it's time to give in. Thanks! How's the learning curve after using Manjaro for about a year?
>>
>>58264745
gnu is shite though. nobody cares about that piece of trash
>>
>>58264794
Ubuntu is the best first choice for IDK-waht-to-install, bro, "kiddie" OS is something retarded like Linux Mint that looks compelling but is trash under the hood. Canonical is a trash company, but they know what they are doing. Manjaro has a bad repotation aswell, but it's not as bad ad Linux Mint

In a communist society no one would need money. Fuck markets. We need to create a society based on giving according to need. You get some food if you need it. Everyone who works gets extra food. let's talk about linux
>>
>>58266747
I just pause a moment. What are you talking like Linux, is in fact, GNU / Linux, or as I have recently taken to calling it, GNU + Linux. Linux is not an operating system itself, but rather another free component of a fully operational GNU system made useful by corelibs GNU shell utilities and vital system components including a complete operating system such as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but that's just part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates resources of the machine to the other programs you run. The core is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can function as part of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is actually GNU with Linux added, or GNU / Linux. All distributions called "Linux" are really distributions of GNU / Linux.
>>
Happy GNU year!

I've got kubuntu running mostly vanilla, only a handful of extra packages installed. However for the last probably 2 weeks synaptic hasn't marked any updates. Is this normal? I would think I'd update something in that time.
>>
I've been using i3 a bit but when I close windows I can't help but get rather jarred by the sudden reorganization. Logically I get exactly what happens but it doesn't seem to stick.

I have some ideas for visual aids that'd help me. How would I go about implementing these for i3? Right now all I really want is a fading effect like the one you get on phones when you attempt to scroll further than you can on the side closest to the recently closed window of the adjacent window to the one that was just deleted.

I don't even know where I'd go to implement my own visual effects in a DE.
>>

Well sometimes, like right now, I'm monitoring the thread and reading other stuff in a pdf reader.
For me workspaces is for seperating tasks anyway. Like running a compiled program is different from compiling a program/writing code. Those would have separate workspaces. But multiple browser windows concerning leasurly things isn't something I separate out.

>Well sometimes, like right now, I'm monitoring the thread and reading other stuff in a pdf reader

>>
>>58267371

Anon I'm not pointing a gun to your head I'm just explaining my problem. This is how I use workspaces.
I'd rather not change when there's a solution that's at least superficially simple.

No it's not. Just because it's a 'tiling wm' doesn't mean you have to tile everything. It's not uncommon for someone to use a tiling wm and have ten different fullscreen programs. You have a fucked up idea of how to use them.
>>
>>58267452
Idk. The most intensive thing I've ran is Fallout 3 / NV in WINE. Which is fine. I haven't pushed it further than that but my hardware isn't that great.
>>
>>58267465
>doesn't mean you have to tile everything.
No but I tile what I want to.
And you're demanding that I use it the way you do.
At best you should say "good luck can't help you". If my way of using things isn't your way and you deem it bad you can say so. but you can't come here and say how I _should_ use my god damned windowmanager.
Internet threats are pointless but I really should inform you for your own safety that I'd punch you in the face for such stupid comments.
>Tiling WM ten different fullscreen programs
Basically your use of a tiling WM is to not tile. I'm fine with that approach but my problem is a general problem with using tiling in any situation ever. If I close my window it's jarring. I have a potential solution but don't know where to start.

I don't see why you even comment on this if your general (and strongly encouraged to the point where you call others stupid) use of a tiling WM is to not use it. Don't you feel a little bit out of place?

It's like using a laptop as a table-leg prop and being upset when people open theirs and actually use them.

And yes I'm repeating myself in many different ways because I've established you've got serious issues communicating effectively. Hope you get it.

Where did you get this from?
We have only established that two arbitrary applications (related or not) share a tag and i3's way of visualizing the closing one could be smoother.
>weirdo
You're one to speak.
>>58267545
Anon really now. Is it not clear? Is the reading comprehension that low here? Open two windows in a workspace. Close one.
You've now reproduced my issue. It's completely irrelevant what relation the two windows have and all the comments on how I should use my WM are completely irrelevant because I haven't even asked about that.

The only way to avoid this is to NEVER tile. And in that case it doesn't matter if I'm talking about a tiling WM or not. And if this was somehow the accepted way of doing tiled windowing we'd never use it as it's completely superfluous features that you will never use. They only cause you inconvenience.

No. It's not the only solution. I've established I have a solution to try but it involves special rendering. Trivial rendering in fact.

From what I've seen online, it looks like the best option to remove a program in openSUSE and also take care of the other unneeded packages is "sudo zypper remove -u (program)"

You could find something that somewhat works and try to install a working system based on that.

It looks like your problem is that you only have working driver for one of your gpus, so the system is fucking up when it tries to use the display on the wrong one. The kernel you are using at the moment probably has support for dynamically controlling this, so only activates the nvidia GPU when it wants to play a game or something.

Basically you need the drivers for your card. I don't know why you couldn't log in, that's probably just a bug with the login thing, Ive had something like that before
>>
>>58269228
as far as i can tell the driver of my integrated gpu (intel) has no problems
and i got the nvidia driver out of the repo
i'll try getting the official one from nvidia that might fix it

the problem with finding something that somewhat works is that it stops working after a reboot
this is the second time it just stopped working
and i assume the same thing happened at the beginning and i just didn't see it because i did not use it

i'll next try setting up a clean system to fix the password issue and hopefully the gpu issue
but first i'd have to find a way to back up the stuff i can't loose
(i can't just copy the home folder and later throw it back in and it'll just work can i?)
>>
>>58269303
Try typing lspci -k (might need sudo) and see what comes up. The nvidia card should say it has something like the nouveau driver. If it doesn't you might have to manually load the kernel module with modprobe

You can just copy your home files. If you have it on a separate partition you don't even need to do anything

yeah, you said clean a folder. If you want to remove the files only, you would have to do something like

find path/ -type f -iname "*" -delete
>>
>>58271229
I did that, but I don't know how to temporarily release the mouse pointer if I want to do something else on my computer and then switch back to warcraft
>>

try aptitude

Bumping this for help. Also tried xine and vlc, both of which play smoothly, so what do I have to do to make mpv usable?
>>
>>58271383
just put warcraft on its own workspace

Is there a possibility to disable XDG user directories from having "customized" icons?

I would like to keep XDG directories as XDG directories (a lot of software seeks for them) but I would like them to look like regular directories with regular icons
>>
>>58271888
I heard that there is some sort of lightweight windows 7 version, maybe you should try dual booting that

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

Linus wrote like 2% in the beginning. Today he just appoves commits. The biggest contributers to the kernel are Red Hat, Google and Microsoft (and of course people from all over the world).

2% is a lot in such a large project IMHO

Getting a Thinkpad X260, it uses Intel 520 graphics. Do Intel graphics need special video drivers?
>>
>>58272848
nah, intel igpus are the only GPUs on the market that you don't have to fuck around with on Linux.

Intel provides an open source kernel that's included in the kernel.

It's literally better than the one you get on Windows.

Friendly reminder that you can make happend the Year of GNU/Linux dDesktop by

1. Help making good software and videogames if you are a programmer. There are plenty of open source games you can help https://libregamewiki.org/Main_Page. Imagine if you have a company, you can sell GPL games too if you create an original story and artwork. Yes you read it just right, you can sell it. Put some money on marketing and you are on the right track helping the community too.

2. Offer technical support for those willing to switch the platform. I am not joking when I say people made money with this. RedHat and Canonical are the biggest examples.

Godspeed.

STOP RECOMMENDING DEBIAN

You are all completely stupid. Debian is outdated and insecure. More over, it's just a noobuntu spin that was made to attract power users. All it's maintainers are SJW and the distro is sponsored by jews and the liberal media.
The Debian project shows through it's public statements and manifests that it's clearly no aligned with the moral Christian values that made the US the great nation it came to be.
It's degenerate.

Arch Linux is superior to it in every way. It has bleeding edge packages, what means more stability and security, since you get all the last bug fixes.
It's rolling release, it doesn't randomly breaks during version updates.
It's also more configurable and extensible. On overall you just have more control over your computer.
Anyone that is serious about their OS uses Arch.

That makes sense. My laptop has a Skylake i5, would it be important to update my kernel to maximize performance?
I use Fedora 25 and normally exclude kernel updates from yum because I find removing each grub entry after an update.

a kernel might introduce an update to the cpu microcode.

if your hardware is recent it's worth to use recent kernel versions.
>>
>>58273084
>>58273131
and you aren't supposed to remove grub entries on fedora you dummy.

Fedora keeps 1 or 2 (i don't remember) kernel version backwards after an update so you can boot and fix a problem IF some critical bug slips through when they release a new kernel.

They're removed as you go.

What's some good linux software for keeping a journal?

I think Emacs + org-mode is the tool for that.

I'll keep updating it, especially because Skylake CPUs are still relatively new.

>>58273152
Never noticed that Fedora only stores the 3 most recent kernel versions (googled it to be sure). Never had an issue with the most recent kernels before I stopped updating, but I agree that it would be good to keep the entries just in case.

OK, so, I have one HD with Ubuntu installed, but Ubuntu isn't as free as other distros. I want to install Trisquel on it, but only on a part of it, not all of it. Could I? Which software should I use? Would it be safe to do? May I define that the same user folder be shared by both distros?

Currently running OpenSuse and I'm having trouble getting a Huion graphics tablet to work.

I've managed to get it set up on Mint and I've seen people get it working on Ubuntu so I know it can be done.

The distro shouldn't even matter as support for this model has been included since kernel 3.12.2

Any ideas on what to do?
