Hoping someone can help with this.

I need to recover files from an SD card, but unfortunately I don't have an SD card reader. They're on a camera so it's MTP, which, as I just learned, means that software like recuva or photorec can't read the memory card.

Is there any way I can recover these files?

I was thinking I could make an image of the drive and then run recovery software on that, but I'm not really sure if that's possible, again due to MTP.

Please help.
>>
>>58253467
MTP is limited as fuck. If you care about getting your shit back, you're buying a reader or borrowing from a friend. They're like 3 bucks on ebay. The readers too

Below is a video showing how the camera tracking on a smartphone can follow a piece of paper. Could someone give me the quick run down on what it would take to make something like this? I want to make my own but using different objects. Thanks

Normally I like figuring this shit out for my self but I'll ask /g/ cause I have no idea what the fuck the problem is.

I've been OCing my i7 6700k but Ive been getting insane temps and some thermal throttling in games (skipping and so on). I decided to try to figure out what the issue was. I cleaned everything re-applied thermal paste brand new then I went and set everything back to stock Well I am playing csgo the only game I usually play and my temps are still hitting 90+. I even made sure all fan headers are running at max speed. I have no fucking idea why. Is my all in one watercooler going bad or something? Could it be that I applied the thermal paste wrong? It was hitting these same temps before i even changed the thermal paste? I'm going to try

I had to take the side panel off to get it to hit 80C and at times it still hit fucking 88-90c.

If you use it like a regular hard drive it'll be fine.

I am 99% sure my wife is cheating on me, I know she's been deleting texts and doing suspicious things like telling me shes at work when shes out with her coworkers. I honestly didnt even suspect a thing until a few of my friends and family came to me. Bottom line I guess is I need to know if any of you had a similar experience and if anyone knows of a way to log her texts/calls (sms backup wont work because she deletes them before the app can back them up) or maybe a way to recover deleted texts (she has a galaxy a5), thanks for any and all input
>>
>>58253842
No, you don't have to worry about deleting things. Technically an SSD has a limited number of writes for any given area, but the rest of your computer will probably be dead and gone long before you ever reach that limit. It helps both your longevity, but more importantly your speed to have free space on the drive, although a lot of SSDs come with unacessable free space to handle that automatically.

WebWatcher and mSpy, but what you're talking about is illegal in most U.S. jurisdictions. Just confront her.

>>>/adv/
>>
>>58253842
That's kind of what trim is for.

When you write data to an SSD, if the cells being written to already contain data, they first need to be erased (i.e. 0100010010100100 -> 0000000000000000), before they can be written to.

When you delete or modify a file, the remnants are left behind in the disk. Trim is a feature where the OS will tell the SSD to mark the deleted sectors for erasing, and the SSD will go along after all its jobs are finished, wiping those sectors so they are ready to write again.
If this doesn't occur, every time you write to a sector that hasn't been cleared, the SSD will erase it, then write to it, which takes a LOT longer than just writing to it.

If you don't have TRIM support, your SSD write speed will slow down dramatically over time.

Updated Kaspersky (I fucking know) on a pc and it gave a x000000d1 BSoD trying to access MyKaspersky.

Tested a few applications and general shit real quick to make sure it wasn't a graphics driver problem. Thought it was a problem with internet access since they just added Kapsersky Secure Connection with any applications still active in 2017, but I don't think anything changed.

Is x000000d1 just a dump file or bugcheck error or is it a driver bug?

Bars of soap are cheaper and last longer, but you have to lather it up to get it applied everywhere.

Liquid soap is easy, but more expensive. You can also soap up without really washing yourself, at least with bar soap you have to rub it on.

I got a pack of dove men's bar soap and its lasted me the better part of a year.

also virtualbox will need to run as admin as well when using the vmdk, as otherwise it won't be able to access the disk since it links to a physical disk
also also, whatever you do, DON'T mount a disk read/write on both the host machine and a VM at the same time, things WILL explode

I've had my computer for a long time now and paid some guy to build it for me back in the day. Now my power supply fan is making a really fucking annoying grinding noise and I need to fix it.

I've replaced a few parts and upgraded some things before but fucking with the power supply is new to me. The noise was driving me insane so I just said fuck it and popped open the power supply and started to fuck with the fan. I oiled it a bit but couldn't see anything else to do with it so I just put it all back together. The fan stopped grinding for a few days but recently started making the noise again.

Should I just replace the power supply all together or replace the fan? I had a fan lying around but the plug for its cord was 3 pronged at the end and the slot for the fan in my power supply only has 2 prongs. Not sure if I need to order a special fan or what.
>>
>>58255239
get a 3 prong fan from a electronic store and replace it, they are fairly cheap. Just make sure you have the fan going the right direction for air flow.
>>
>>58254634
Do you need to run 4k content? If not then your 1080p monitor will work just fine. if you going to spend money on a new graphics card do the homework and research the cards out and see what will work for your needs before you spend money on them.
>>
>>58255239
So the problem with working on computers is that while most of it is a simple as legos, it's easy to miss a couple of important points, like when someone just has no idea static discharge is even a thing. Generally we think about safety in terms of not damaging the hardware, but there are a handful of things that are dangerous as shit to the builder. This is why you never open a monitor, the long thing capacitor under a monitor in laptops, or ANY POWER SUPPLY. You just replace that shit. If you have to open the power supply, you need a new one.
>>
>>58255325
Well I did open it, fixed the problem but only temporarily. Didn't really bother with taking any measures to avoid static discharge shit.

How much should I be spending on a new one? Most of what I'm seeing is $50-$80, which seems kind of cheap. Is that about the price I should be paying for a power supply? 500W is what I think I need.

Static discharge was just an example. That's just a chance of fucking up a cheap piece of hardware, as opposed to a chance of fucking yourself right up.

>>
>>58255350
You never want to cheap out on your power supply nor get one that under power your pc. Check your current power supply and see what's the current rating you have now. Let's say it is 500W, then research on what would work for your needs past that like gold rated, some no name power supplies do tend to flake out, lets say it was $35, but you don't need to spend more than 120 for one either.

You will have to wire it up as well, connect to the mobo and accessories. do a visual check on cables to see you have everything you need from the one you going to purchase. If not, take it to a store and have a tech do it for you.

So i know it's possible to lock with a password the OS of a bootable usb pen drive and that i can have encrypted persistent storage but what if i want to hide the OS itself? I mean if someone plugs the pen drive in a pc they'll be able to see what OS is installed on it. Even if someone boots from it and get propted to the login screen they will still probably be able to tell what OS you have there.
Can something be done to avoid this?

K suffix means it has an unlocked multiplier.
You can overclock by increasing the bus speed but you'd overclock all components then and can't really go far with that like you can with changing the multiplier.

so if you actually want to overclock, get one with the K suffix.

go into your bios and look for FSB/bus speed, then slowly increase it and see what happens while keeping an eye out on the temparatures.

you need to figure this out on your own.
since you don't seem to know enough about it I'd avoid doing that altogether.

I have an authentic copy of "Maths and English with RAYMAN" on CD but I can't get it to install on my Windows 10 PC. I've tried running it through the compatibility troubleshooter and launching it in Windows XP mode, but these CDs were designed for Windows 95 and 98 so it still doesn't work. I get an error message stating that the software is incompatible with 64-bit operating systems. Is there any way to run this? DP can go up to 3meters for it's full bandwidth and 15 meters for 1080p@60hz with 24bits per pixel.
if your GPU supports dual mode displayport then you can use a passive converter, otherwise you need an active one.

chances are it uses a 16bit installer, that was pretty common with earlier 32bit programs

you could try installing it in a VM (running say, 32bit windows XP), then transferring the installed copy to your host machine (or just running it in the VM if you prefer)

This feels like a stupid question so here:

My computer randomly freezes and needs a restart. Happens a lot (probably around once a day)
Sometimes it happens 20 minutes in to using my PC, other times it when it has been running for like 10 hours that day.
I ran memtest86 overnight and it came up with 0 errors with my RAM. It really fucking sucks because I often work with Photoshop and I've lost lots of work because of this. I also stream in my off time and if it freezes I gotta restart everything.

I have recently changed my case as well as swapped my CPU cooler.

alright

i looked it up and it says it runs on dos, 3.1 and 95/98
supporting 3.1 means it might not even have a 32bit version
it might be easier to just run the DOS version in dosbox
you can run 3.1 in dosbox, but then if the game is the same, you can skip installing and running 3.1

if the game itself (not just the installer) has no 32bit version, you won't be able to directly run it on 64bit windows

righto, well that does make it more likely that the game is 32bit (don't know of any games that are 16bit and don't support 3.1), meaning it may run in 64bit windows, once you get past the installer

something else to try;
sometimes cd games of that age have installers which do little more than copy [part of] the cd onto the hdd, you might be able to run the game by simply copying the contents yourself and running it from that copy

2. i did not run ghostscript in interactive mode
3. how did you end up with a 3 year old version?

there will be file(s) that define the status of your downloads, but the problem is that the paths can't be compatible, that is, you can't put the files anywhere where their path will be the same in both systems
depending on how the data is stored, it may not be too difficult to make a script which adjusts the paths
or just do what i do, run a VM in windows which runs your linux system
>>
>>58260736
>a VM in windows which runs your linux system

How do you pull this off?
>>
>>58260708
>Literally donwloaded it 20 minutes ago, no idea what that means
as in, you're in a ghostscript "shell", notice the "GS>" rather than the typical (in windows) "C:\>"
>>
>>58260663
Downloaded updated Ghostscript and ImageMagick7.0.4-1
Still nothing when I type things into GS.
>>
>>58260736
All the files have their paths already set to my Windows partition, not Debian's. Is it still incompatible? Thanks for the help

oooh that makes sense.
How do I invoke it for win8.1?

i've never bought a phone not from a carrier directly so someone pls help
http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/#iphone-6s-iphone-6s-plus
If I'm reading this correctly, the 6s plus should work as well under US Cellular which is a CDMA network
https://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPhone-Unlocked-Smartphone-Camera/dp/B01JAWXOO2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483214981&sr=8-1&keywords=gold+16gb+iphone+6s+plus

But this specifically says its GSM, or it is just going to be compatible with CDMA as well?
>>
>>58260765
with virtualbox, you can make vmdk "disks" which just point to physical disks
vboxmanage.exe internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename c:\disk1.vmdk -rawdisk \\.\PhysicalDrive1

(repeat for each disk applicable)
you can find what drive number to use in diskpart or disk management

just be sure never to mount anything twice rw, that is, anything with a "letter" in windows should not be mounted except with ro, if your system automounts things, disable/blacklist it, or be very careful

>>58260775
yes, it's impossible to have the same path in both systems

for example, if you place a file in "c:\torrents\download", where would you put it in linux? that's not a path in linux
>>
>>58260805
open cmd, then run gs from there

you need to either be in the folder gs is, or have gs in PATH

Yea, that makes sense. Oh well, thanks again

Damn, that's cool. Don't know what "rw/ro" is in this context, but you mean I just need to go through and remove the drive letter in disk management before running that command?

Meaning the files have to be in the same folder gs is?

I have it open in my cmd but it still doesn't do anything.
>>
>>58260901
rw = read/write
ro = read only

what i'm saying is that if you attach a hdd to a VM, both the host and the guest OS can see that hdd, making it possible to mount volumes on it on both systems, if you mount one read/write on both at the same time, you will cause filesystem damage

for example, if you attach the disk that has "C:" on it, and you mount the "C:" partition rw in the VM while windows is using it... bad stuff happens
linux won't be aware something else has access to that disk, so it won't even warn you

if linux is on a seperate disk, then just attach that disk and not the windows one, easy
>>
>>58260926
I don't know what program that is, but It's weird that it's not flagging the uncorrectable sector count. Try running crystaldiskinfo.
>>

Gocha. Reminds me of the problems early android had with mounted sd cards and USB access before they enforced MTP. Major thanks for the info
>>
>>58261023
Point being that it's not doing a very good job of labeling the info coming out of S.M.A.R.T. in a helpful way
>>
>>58260973

It's speccy's rudimentary S.M.A.R.T. thing, crystaldisk is giving me caution flags on the reallocated sector count (323) and pending sector count (37)

Really all I'm looking for is an opinion on whether I should be immediately worried or if I can coast on this for a bit because I can't currently afford a new drive and have no means of backing it up..

Happened upon an older article the other day, discussing whether or not games could break people into basic principles of programming;

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/10/03/can-video-games-teach-you-programming/

Human resources machine is enjoyable, a brain twister for us noobs that plays with some very basic assembly logic.. haven't played hack n' slash as I've read its more of an unfair brain buster that doesn't play by any real-world coding rules. Haven't tried Shenzen I/O, but really want to once I'm more experienced.

From the comments I gleamed that anything from developer Zachtronics is an enjoyable, albeit challenging experience. Many comments also listed his games SpaceChem and especially Infinifactory as good logic preppers.

If you want to try something interactive and fun first before jumping into a book, this might be an enjoyable way to stimulate your brain before hitting the books. Just an option, not necessarily a suggestion. :)
>>
>>58261052
yea, you can't mount an SD card both in android and an external computer at the same time, MTP sidesteps it by leaving it mounted in android, and having the other computer access it through android in an abstracted way, kind of like FTP

speaking of such, you can transfer files between your host and guest via network shares, as you would if they were separate physical machines
probably pretty obvious, but no harm in pointing it out
>>
>>58260895
Ok I got it to copy but when I run it, it says that the file CONFIG.EXE cannot be found, despite it being right there. When I double click CONFIG.EXE Windows 10 says "This app can't run on your PC"

Why the fuck am I getting such horrible ping spikes with my PCI-E wireless card? Is it a driver or hardware issue?

It's a Rosewill N600, which I believe means it uses an Atheros AR9380 chipset

(you can technically unmount in one then mount in the other, too, but if you fuck up you'll wish you never bothered, just use the network)

How can a layman stay up to date on the state of the economy? Someone with little to no economics education.
>>
>>58261093
You could already have major data loss. I once had a drive turn out to already have a third of its capacity boned with numbers lower than that. I'd run checkdisk and see what comes up. It's always kind of a crapshoot. Could last for months or die completely tomorrow.
>>
>>58261124
perhaps its setup normally puts CONFIG in a different place, or records where it is in the registry
sounds like CONFIG is a 16bit program, too
might just have to make a VM with 32bit windows

95/98 aren't nice to run in VMs in general, make a 2000 or XP VM and see if the game works in those
>>
>>58261194
Yeah I'll try it later. Thanks for all your help anon I'm just very lazy. Now that I've copied the disks to my PC I can simply tackle the rest of this problem later.
>>

virtualbox for the VM software will do fine

Well pretty much any time SMART throws up a caution it's time to back up anything important. All those numbers can really tell you is that the statistical odds of your drive failing partially or fully have gone way up.
>>
Alright.. here goes nothing..
How do I change the voltage on a locked intel haswell cpu? I'm not trying to overclock. The fan on my heatsink literally died and since i cant replace it right now im just letting it cool passively.. however I have to set my max cpu state terribly low in order to pull that off. I'm thinking if I can manually alter the voltage I can find a stable underclock because I seriously doubt this thing needs a whole .95v for sub-1.2ghz speeds. I figure I can squeeze a few more mhz out of it this way with any luck. Thanks.
>>
>>58261398
Forgot to mention, everything related to that is greyed out in the bios, literally everything from vcore offset to multiplier. The latter makes sense. I'm not sure why I can't touch the former.
>>
What is more likely to get corrupted, a raw file or the same file compressed? It is only to storage it in a hard drive so if compression is less likely, it would be better.
>>
>>58261478
raw is more likely, for the simple fact that it's probably bigger

if they're the same size there's no difference, they both just data
>>
I need a good graphics card under $300, I want to be able to mod games and play games at 1080p. Any suggestions. Also a good cheap SSD
>>
I would like to run some benchmarks of my own and I need software that will record all of the information about frame rate possible and export it some where, like to a graph or a log or whatever.

I don't just want the average FPS over the session, I want as much information as possible. I will settle for just average FPS over a set peroid of time though if I have to.

Help please
