Would only being able to supply power to one of my two 200R case fans matter? The new (mini) board I got can only connect to one. Is the difference between 2/2 and 1/2 negligible?

Still looking for some sort of guidance here. I've tried swapping channels in the router, and disabling wireless autoconfig, but I get these instantaneous disconnects, which is especially noticeable when I'm playing Quake Live

If I have a PC with separate audio and microphone jacks and I get, say, a gaymen headset with a single audio jack, will the microphone on that headset work if I plug it into the audio jack?
>>
>>58262223
The real advantage is two fans running at 50% is WAY quieter than one running at 100%. Also you can spend $5 on a fan splitter.
>>
>>58262250
What are you using? 5ghz? 2.4? First try 5ghz if that doesn't work something in your area is giving off too much interference try powerline networking.

>>58262333
No you need a headphone splitter. Pick one up on Amazon for under $5

Enthoo Evolv mATX or Node 304? I want something mostly metal, quiet, and compact with good drive support and cooling. I have no plans to do water cooling.
>>
>>58262513
I might, I was looking at the kraken pro v2 cause it's ten dollars less than the hyperx, but I'll keep it in mind.
>>
>>58262656
iirc the node 304 isn't designed with the same foam that the fractal define series has - for that you gotta go with the fractal define mini
>>
>>58262656
also the node 304 is mitx, not matx - but fits a standard atx powersupply
>>
>>58262723
>>58262737
Apparently the layered plastic/aluminum front panel on the Node does pretty well with sound dampening, and I could always add sound dampening sheets if I wanted to.

And I know they're not the same form factor, I just wanted to find something smaller than a mid tower then figure out what I'll put in it later.
>>
>>58262761
ah, fair enough - you should still be able to find a motherboard with 6 satta ports to fill out the node 304, although you may have to shop around a bit.
if all you need is one daughterboard with a x16 width pci-ex slot, then mitx is definitely good enough - you only really need matx or atx nowadays if you have a need for more daughterboards.

What is a good site that compares/benchmarks graphics cards that doesn't require you to click through a dozen pages?
I used to use anandtech but they don't have the cards I want to look at. I want up to date comparisons of the RX460, RX470 4GB, RX480 4GB, and GTX 1050Ti
>>
>>58263101
the cursor itself is called 'working in background', i believe - it's when something that's not in focus (ie where you clicked last, or something running in another instance of chrome if you're using that) is doing something - it has nothing to do with overclocking unless you're using some kind of dynamic overclocking that's controlled by an application running in the background.

What are the actual consequences of never updating Windows? Specifically after October, when they introduced cumulative updates that you can't tell what's in them.
>>
>>58263205
it's definitely confirmation bias

>>58263212
you said benchmarks, though.. that usually means higher number = better, tested through emperical means. framerate tests don't mean much unless your system is the same as their testbench.

>>58263218
well, modern windows does a lot more maintainance on itself than windows 95 did, which is when i was last doing stuff involving this sort of thing - but generally speaking anything that triggers 'working in background' is something that's not taking up a whole lot of cpu cycles, or it shouldn't be running in the background in the first place.

>>58263213
stop using mirc, it's a shitty client with multiple exploits demonstrated against it.

>>58263254
aside from the ever-present risk of exploits besides 0day ones? not much.
look, nsa already has microcode injected into your computer that makes it so that unless you airgap your computer with its own power generator in a faraday cage, they can probably read what you're doing even if you're encrypting it at application level.

is there a cmd prompt that extracts .xc files into their own folders/do it all together?

>>
>>58263813
As somebody (not the guy you're replying to) who used mIRC forever and loved the way I had it set up, hexchat is the closest thing you'll get to that client. It may look a little funky at first and probably not run as stable as mIRC did, but it's still fast, light, and has a similar amount of features. It's one of the few categories of programs where I can honestly say the alternative to the big name everyone used is pretty good.

Put your server tree on the left, your user list on the right, expand the size of the chatbox a bit, set up your highlights, change the font if you need, fix the colors to something you're familiar with, and so on. You'll be right at home again.

My new build isn't turning on.
Already checked the CPU and it seems to be okay.
The GPU's led turns on, so the PSU might not be it.

I've got an FX 8350 Black Edition that's about 3 years old now. Recently I rebuilt my system, but I'm using the same mobo and CPU from before. I've been getting random bluescreens, and deducted that the CPU was causing the problem. At first I simply thought it was the temps, as it reached 60-62c while playing a game. I redid the airflow, and have been watching the temps, which haven't gotten high since. I opened AMD OverDrive and ran a stability test, and it gave me "Illegal sumeout" and "Possible hardware failure" twice, then self-stopped the test. I went into BIOS and messed with a couple of the settings, which I'm embarrassed to say I don't know much about. I set the "AI Overclock Tuner” to “D.O.C.P” in the BIOS, and it seems to have fixed the problem for now. Why am I running into these problems with my stock CPU?

1) Check this other red circle, make sure that is plugged in.
2) Make sure your RAM is properly seated
3) Your red circle is correct, its labeled F_PANEL aka Front Panel. Look at the manual though and make sure its plugged in the correct way. Could also try pressing the reset button as a quick test, I've put my power button on reset a few times.
4) Take out a stick of ram and try each one individually.
5) Manually reset CMOS (read the manually, usually means taking out the battery or flipping a jumper)
6) Take your motherboard out and make sure the standoffs under it are properly aligned, it may be shorting out.

If all that fails then it might be the PSU. A PSU can actually turn on idle components like a LED and fans but still fail to turn on the whole PC. Could be forgetting some things as well myself but should be a decent starting point.

>>58264657

I even try playing the former at a lower resolution and/or windowed. I've set frame limits so I know it's not trying to push out hundreds more frames per second or anything like that. Someone good at algebra can be a poor programmer.
Someone good at programming can be poor at algebra.

The common ground between the two is they both require abstract thinking.

It's useful as a base for learning abstractness, but unless you're applying programming to some sort of science, you won't really need it.

im a senior CS student and i have to complete a 6 week internship in order to graduate

is there anything specific i should say in my emails? i have a list of places that have gotten interns from my school in the past, so i plan on just making it a short 2 paragraphs. im not sure how technical i should be or if i should even include a resume since i don't have any work experience or major projects. all i have is school work and everything that i've read has said to not include school work

I have some hardware problems here, /g/.

>GPU temp above 100ºC
After 5 minutes in a game my video card temperature rises from 50ºC to 101ºC and FPS halves. Computer shuts down sometimes.

I've already tried manipulating the fan speed and exchanging the thermal paste, but nothing changed. My video card is an almost 4 years old GTX 670 FTW, should I just replace it?

Another question here: CPU temp at idle is between 44ºC - 48ºC, and when gaming it gets to 75ºC. Is it a good CPU temp? I use the stock coolers.

Fine in bursts. Keep an eye out for higher. Stop what you're doing if it's 80+, and look for solutions (fans, tp, new cpu) IMMEDIATELY if 85+, you'll fry the thing in your mobo

In the USB.
I have no idea how to. All those drivers are in a DVD that came in the MB's box.
Yes.
>>
>>58266746
Yeah, well, I cleaned the old thermal paste and applied a new one; just a drop. It's the same I'd do with a CPU if it was the case.

Anything wrong?
>>
>>58266752
Yes
>>
>>58266752

No, that'd be pretty unoptimized.
It means anything that isn't the OS that is trying to access it must decrypt it.

Think of it like encrypting traffic entering/leaving a VPN, but not inside.
>>

Use this:
https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/techfaqdetail.aspx?formid=3350

You need AHCI drivers to contine, and USB 3.0 for the keyboard/mouse.

Your USB should look like this.

Once you downloaded MSI Smart tools open it,

In Step 1 click Add USB drivers.
In Step 2 select your USB.
Once you are done your bootable USB with the installer will look like this.

If it's only started recently, then I'd assume it's just its age showing, and you're safe to get a new one. Now's a good time with the 10XX series.

If you've always had that problem, I'm surprised you haven't killed yourself yet after 4 years of it.
>>
>>58266882
Of course not. It started just recently. I noticed that my FPS was literally cut to half after just some minutes of gaming. I suspected it was the temp and installed a monitoring software. Turns out I was right.

Guess I'll just buy a 1060. It's not that expensive and it's a good card.

thoroughly clean dust out of the fins and off the fan blades
removing the bulk of dust only works for a while, if a coating of harder-to-remove stuff gets on there, it ruins fan efficiency and insulates the heatsink (trapping heat)

older chips don't run hotter just because they're old, they produce the same amount of heat until they die, the only thing that changes is the condition of the cooling system
>>
>>58267028
Already tried it ;-;
>>
>>58267037
you dismantled it entirely, and cleaned it back to practically-new, shiny condition, and it didn't help?

are you sure nothing else has changed? something external blocking airflow to/from the card? reduced airflow in the case? (added some hdd's, maybe?), different case than when you got the card?, etc

it could also be your setup has always caused a high temperature, and just the act of running more intensive games on it has pushed it over the edge
>>
>>58267067
Yes. Cleaning It did help, but only at idle temperatures.

I actually added a new HDD, but it was 6 months ago.

It could be the summer, I live in the southern hemisphere and it hits 30ºC easily everyday. My old card may be suffering because of this.

One case of overheating causes the chance of another overheating to increase exponentially.

101 degrees Celsius is laughable, causing the computer to shutdown (most likely just the card, and its display capabilities), I don't think it's gonna be working in its peak efficiency, regardless of its cooling mechanisms.

So my girlfriend and I live 2 hours away. We do watch a lot of videos on various streaming sites together. We sync up and then for some reason after a few minutes I'm several seconds ahead of her. Her video never buffers so that's not the problem.

Any ideas?

Internet is a series of tubes. The tubes to china are very long, so it takes a while for stuff to come through to the other side.
>>
>>58267409

Facebook has servers worldwide. So when Chinese try to connect (assuming they can), they connect to their lowest-latency (usually closest) server, so they get fast load times. You do the same thing when you try to access FB.

Weibo probably ONLY has servers in China, meaning the only way for you to get there is to make a round-trip to China. Which is slow.

Is it a terrible thing to have the cpu 8 pin cable resting on top of the upper section of the cpu heatsink?
The cable was slightly too short to be comfortably routed through the back, so I couldn't be arsed and just left it there.
Pic related is my cooler and my i5 6500 isn't generally getting any hotter than 60 degrees even under heavy load for extended periods, and I'm assuming that the top fifth of the heatsink will be significantly cooler than that.
As far as I can see the cables should be able to handle such temperatures just fine, but it's not going to gradually wear it down and give me trouble a few years down the line, is it?

No, they're not. BSODs are a sign of shoodily written drivers, or in rarer cases a sign of malfunctioning hardware. Modern virii has no use for a non-functioning computer or even a computer where the user suspects something is wrong, they'd much rather stealthily use your computer and/or its internet connection for something useful, making it part of a botnet, because that way they can make money while you take the fall.

Here's the thing, nobody actually knows because the only virii you have to worry about nowadays is the kind that modifies itself on-the-fly, making it basically impossible to detect with definitions or even heuristics - and the only benchmark for antivirus software anyone has come up with is how many definitions they can handle (and what the fuck does it matter if a antivirus program knows about a virus that's 25 years old? There isn't even a 16-bit execute path in Windows anymore).
The one built into Windows 10 is ~good enough~ in that it'll catch what the others catch when they catch it - the only way to be reasonably protected is to have ublock origin+noscript, never download files, and praying to Dennis Ritchie that nobody will find an exploit for your browser or any of the hundreds of libraries it uses (like the recent jpg rendering exploit which caused safari to be susceptible to remote execution, which could've been coupled with a priviledge escalation exploit - just as an example, mind you - Windows and Linux could also easily be suceptible to these kind of exploits, and have been in the past).

That's still modern for Windows 95 which, unsurprisingly, came out in 95.
At best, you're gonna have to hunt down drivers, since they're probably not even available on your motherboard manefacturers website.

I'm setting up a new email (migrating from Yahoo) and am wondering if I should bite the bullet and go through GMail/Outlook, or if I should spend the money on server space and have a website.

It's an issue of security vs privacy, since I'm not certain how secure my emails will be setting up through a domain-provider's server. But I don't necessarily want botnet. I don't really use the web for anything exceedingly private.
>>
>>58269767
Because if windows 7 is less botnet than 10, then windows 95 must be least botnet of all!

It can run independent executables, but it's a pain in the ass to add anything that requires an installation. If you're looking to have a fully running copy of windows on a portable drive, you would want win-to-go instead.

>Is it possible to install windows 95 on a USB stick?
I have a work around that I use.
Install puppy linux to a USB flash drive then use QEMU with virtmanager to create vmdk files for those older OS.
Surprisingly it runs very well.
I have a 64 GB flash drive and I'm running Win NT 3.1 to XP.

Yes but QEMU is designed to work more like a bare metal hypervisor without requiring much of an os running in the background. Makes it more efficient, and allows for easy switching of OSes.
>>
>>58269882

Manefacturer FTPs, mostly. Any other source is unreliable and likely to be infected with malware that's practically undetectable.

>>58269892
Android runs on ARM, so unless you're willing to put in a hell of a lot of effort, no. Android Studio and SDK tools contains a ARM emulator that you can use.

>>58269900
Sure, but bare-metal hypervisors like Hyper-V, ESXi and, arguably, bhyve all are intended to be used to run multiple OS' all the time, not switching between OS'. Besides, that's not this usecase.

I normally just leave the current /SQT/ open in a tab, check in periodically.

No, it's just not built to let applications install the normal way, with registry integration and all that. You have to use a special process

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749312(v=ws.10).aspx

>So I just install Win8 to a USB flash drive?
You can't install normal windows to anything but an internal drive. win-to-go is a special kind of windows designed to run a hardware check every time it boots to load up the appropriate drivers.

What's the best OS for a NAS that is exclusively for doing incremental backups and deduplication of a server?

Also keep in mind that that NAS shouldn't been powered on 24/7, since it's actually only for backup and only light redundancy like ZFS Z2 is required.

Also there are hardware limitations, hence I'm not sure that FreeNAS is the right choice. The server that will become the FreeNAS is limited to 24GB ECC RAM and it's already 35TB of data.

It installs generic drivers automatically, same as a normal install. Windows 8 and above shouldn't need special drivers, windows 7 needs the xhci patch for usb 3.0 just like normal win7 would. I believe that using that third party utility you don't have to worry about activation, you just need an activated windows pc to create it on

As safe as software companies are in general. It's not that it's somehow rigging you up a pirated license. Windows mobile variants don't require activation in the same way that normal windows does. But the tool to create a win-to-go disk is normally only included in enterprise/education editions. This lets you make a disk from any version of windows

>>
>>58270680
They're trying to motivate people to buy enterprise without making the licensing on the actual mobile installations too restrictive and hard to authenticate. Microsoft usually doesn't make it very easy to install mobile the way they do standard, but they give other companies free rein to repackage them. And yes, if you had enterprise you could do it easily without 3rd party tools.
