And of course, this crops up another issue. The DPI settings get fucked up when I keep the monitor plugged in across restarts, so when I log in the text is fuckhuge for my laptop screen.

Well in regular vim the + register is the system clipboard. So think "+Y to copy the current line into the clipboard, or "+p to paste. You can also use the * register. In Windows, they're the same, but they are different in Linux for reasons I can't remember.

I'm thinking about setting up a linux from scratch system as my first linux system in many years (used to run arch about 4 years ago, have been back on windows since and will have a main windows machine). Is it a bad idea to attempt this as someone who hasn't used linux in a good while but isn't computer illiterate? Is there a reasonable (lightweight) set of tools for Linux for user switching, screen locking, and suspending?
For example, with the login manager LXDM if you switch user that new user can just press ctrl+alt+F7 and have access to the previous users session without entering their password. There should be some kind of screen locking or something to prevent this.

I think wanting user switching with screen locking, or suspending with screen locking is a very reasonable thing. But the only solutions I can find involve some delicate scripting and config file edits that don't feel very reliable.

I've only tried LXDM and tried setting it up with i3lock. Is there something else I should be using?
and I don't think I should have to be installing any gnome dependencies for something so simple.

STOP RECOMMENDING DEBIAN

You are all completely stupid. Debian is outdated and insecure. More over, it's just a noobuntu spin that was made to attract power users. All it's maintainers are SJW and the distro is sponsored by jews and the liberal media.
The Debian project shows through it's public statements and manifests that it's clearly no aligned with the moral Christian values that made the US the great nation it came to be.
It's degenerate.

Arch Linux is superior to it in every way. It has bleeding edge packages, what means more stability and security, since you get all the last bug fixes.
It's rolling release, it doesn't randomly breaks during version updates.
It's also more configurable and extensible. On overall you just have more control over your computer.
Anyone that is serious about their OS uses Arch.

It does, but when the other option is nouveau, which has blobs regardless, I'd rather use proprietary. Here's hoping AMD gets the chance to merge a huge portion of their code eventually. Don't let them know anything about you.
Always use a different one. Set up your own vpn or proxy on an anonymously paid vps on the netherlands, russia or some east europe country.

If the server is compromised they can only trace your activity for the last, say one week.

Also use noscript, disconnect, https-everywhere and stop-fingerprint.

Don't maximize your browser window. Always use 1024x768 or some other generic resolution.

Never word emails so they can have only one interpretation. gpg is a plus.

I'm staring to get more into VMs and need to setup/configure networks. Is there a good guide or tutorial to familirize myself with networking in Linux
>>
On arch, why does upgrading a single package routinely break it? I mean, it's not that difficult to look at stderr and find out which shared library I need to update as well, but shouldn't the package manager know that in order to upgrade package X it needs to upgrade shared library Y as well?

sadly had to install ubuntu because of network drivers and didn't have the installer for OSX. Overall the experience is great but i have one issue. I use PDF editors like adobe reader and others to try to edit text for certain worksheets for college but i can't find one that actually does that.

Anyone have any pdf programs that help edit text ?

That's usually called an internal-network. Most hypervisors support it out of the box.

I learned networking from a level way down that. So the books I can recommend might not be exactly what you are looking for.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as GNU/Linux is in fact GNU. Linux is not part of the operating system itself, but is the kernel that is not covered by the naming system of an operating system as defined by common sense.

Many users run operating systems such as Windows, OSX, and a variant of BSD yet do not use a cumbersome naming system that includes the kernel, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, GNU has been the exception to this for no reason and has just been called "Linux" for no good reason, and many others use the insane, cumbersome term "GNU/Linux", mostly because the GNU project doesn't want you to think that Linux is a part of GNU.

There really is a Linux, and it's not part of GNU, but it's a kernel, and no one really specifies using it. GNU is the OS; the actual base system you interact with, and is useful with any compatible kernel; it can function with many different kernels such as GNU Hurd or even kFreeBSD, so the whole system should only specify the kernel when it matters, because all these kernels are really irrelevant regarding GNU.

I'm trying to recover some data off my note 5. It has been turned off immediately after the deletion, wifi/data turned off, and is rooted with usb debugging enabled. It has terminal emulator and busybox installed.

I'm trying to copy /dev/block/mmcblk0 (the whole partition) to an OTG USB (which is twice in capacity than the phone btw). Nothing I do works.

I tried adb pull (via wifi) to the usb (/storage/UsbDriveA/), doesn't work.
I tried cat, doesn't work
I tried dd, doesn't work
I tried to output via nc, doesn't work.

It doesn't work I've concluded because of permissions set to mmcblk0 (179) but when I try to chmod 777 it doesn't work. Tried setting the permission with filexplorer, doesn't work either although it shows that the permissions have been set. I suspect this because the programs finish/exit, and the output file has been created, but is 0 bytes in size. This happens even though all these apps -have- ROOT permissions and the owner of the mmcblk0 is ROOT.

Any suggestions?

I'll use testdisk and photorec to recover the files (videos).

I think I'm missing some very fundamental point.

ARCH IS THE BEST YOU FAGGOTS

The only way to get access to /etc/shadow is being root. Only root can read it.
Now let's suppose you somehow get the hash of the normal user account that can use sudo.

>>58246121
It's not. That's the point. It's not safer to disable root and enable sudo for administrative purposes.

You could even say it's less safe, there could be a keylogger that starts at the normal user login. Now you get the users password and the administrative password.

This could be avoided by only using root by logging off and then login in as root.

Different view: the technical aspect doesn't matter, since the system is unlike windows or mac always a combination of many different programs which isn't always with GNU (alpine, etc) or always with Linux (debian, parabola, etc). Pointing out GNU when you use the combination of GNU and Linux makes people aware of the reason/the idea why the whole thing even exists: freedom. And freedom is fucking nice. Thanks to RMS and GNU, we have Free Software and the GPL, Torvalds could compile Linux run it with a c-lib and a userland and the whole shit is just here like a gift from heaven.

sharing my personal tips on how to tell redditors (also known as mobileposters) from 4chan regulars.

>the use of ":^)" emote
>abuse of """""""""""""""""<quoted term>""""""""""""""""
>aggresive and rude
>overuse of words such as "faggot", "kike" and "nigger" in a desperate attempt to fit into the perceived "4chan culture"
>most frequently viewed boards include /b/, /v/, /pol/, /a/ which you can tell by posted reaction images which include board-specific memes

Would you add anything?

One of the Ubuntu flavors is always good when you don't know what to install. Ubuntu Mate is recommended pretty often, but I personally didn't try it.

that guy has been here for a while

only your feelings are getting hurt

still give it a solid 6/10. make sure to clean up all your trash when holiday ends.

Great point I completely forgot about it.
I rarely pay attention to filenames besides the OP

he sure has. and you haven't since you would know it isn't just "him" but a lot of other posters on this subreddit.

Yeah, pretends to be an "oldfag" who "knows" how to "spot" redditors while posting images with new filenames.

seems like including samefaggotry is in order as well

>>58247671
care to elaborate? it's sometimes hard to tell a political stance from posts completely unrelated to politics/economy.

4chan only recently swung right. I suspect there's a fair share of left-oriented people on this site that hardly constitute a redditor/mobileposter
>>
>>58247696
I agree. You should also add this
>uses the word "community" to deliberately create a "us vs them" dicothomy
>is a communist
>>
Is there any way to detect which user is logged in to the current X session?
I tried looking it up with
>ps -ef | grep X
but it's always owned by root. Is there another way?

>>
>>58247719
yes, there is large amount of them on reddit and the immigrants that come over from there are mostly socialists as well. the overlap here is about 80%
>4chan only recently swung right.
in what way? did /pol/ and /lgbt/ suddenly get deleted?
>I suspect there's a fair share of left-oriented people on this site that hardly constitute a redditor/mobileposter
yes, and I didn't say "left-oriented people" which are a pretty big group. I said socialists, most of whom are redditors.
>>
>>58247696
that's too board specific.

mobileposting problem is not something that only /g/ struggles with

>>58247701
i don't keep large folders full of images saved from 4chan.
I pick a handful of gems from every batch, compress them and store them somewhere in the depths of a nas and remove the remaining.
i like to think of them as time capsule of sorts.

current folder has 86 images.

>in what way?
4chan is contrarian personified.

when the surface internet didn't care about your stance on theism 4chan userbase (at least the vocal part) were staunch atheists. as soon as atheism got trendy on social media 4chan userbase (again the vocal part) started roleplaying their deus vults.

same thing happened wit the political stance.
during when bush (republican) was in office 4chan userbase (largely composed of americans back then) loved to ridicule the republican ideas and morals in a way that resembles modern liberals pretty well.

but then we got obama.
and the pendulum swung right.

i expect the same thing to happen with trump but I'm not so sure since the whole Trump election attracted a fair share of newcomers that might not have the same contrarian attitude to life.

give it some time

>>58247814
ok kid
>>
>>58247880
it's not about being "contrarian". if you think there is anything right wing about /pol/ then you are simply an idiot. it is a left wing board and has been for a long time.
>>
>>58247790
>>58247808
seems like including samefaggotry is in order as well
>>
>>58247880
I say around 2018 is when 4chan goes left again because being a republican will be mainstream and conservatives will be ruining everything like liberals are.

I'm switching from a laptop running OS X to a laptop running Arch.

I have 3TB of films and music on an external HD formatted to work on OS X only, as well as two blank 2TB external HDs I can reformat to whatever file system I want. I just cannot figure out how the fuck I can get my data transferred.

What is the best file system that can read/write on OS X and Linux? And is there really no file system that can read/write on OS X, Linux, and Windows 10?
>>
could i run Antergos on machine with 1gb of ram?
>>
>>58247925
>And is there really no file system that can read/write on OS X, Linux, and Windows 10?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Allocation_Table#FAT32
>>
>>58247958
I know what FAT32 is, but the 4GB file size limit makes it unusable for me considering I have to transfer large movie files.
>>
>>58247905
Since when has nazi been left wing?
>>
>>58247984
>4GB file size limit
split
>>
>>58247921
why did you use a descriptive word first and then started using shit like "conservative" and "liberal" which have literally no meaning since both of them in the US are currently leftists.
>>58247992
since the very inception of the ideology. it's in the name too, as if the ideas themselves weren't blatantly leftist enough.
>>
>>58247992
through technicalities, national socialism is left wing on some countries' political spectrum.
>>
>>58248020
Call /pol/ leftist on /pol/ and count how many times you're told to jump into an oven.
>>
>>58247602
>outing yourself
>>
>>58248063
by no means is it just on "some countries'" political spectrum. it's a leftist ideology with leftist ideas at its core and nothing can possibly change that. if it's a spin on national socialism with all the leftism removed it isn't national socialism at that point.
>>58248070
i actually have and the more intelligent ones of them can notice basic truths about the world like their ideology (socialism) being leftism.
>>
>>58247602
Racism, homophobia, misogyny, and anti-Semitism is part of 4chan culture.
>>
>>58248070
/pol/ is just the popular and watered down version of their ideology though. and i am pretty sure they don't even read their own left wing literature.
>>
>>58248130
>>58248169
For socialists, they constantly bitch about socialism like welfare and national healthcare.
>>
>>58248169
/ pol/ is just a safe space for edgy kids who cant into /k/ ate their school
>>
>>58248004
If I split and then merge the files, I assume I won't be able to seed them anymore for >muh ratio. It's also a huge pain in the ass. I'll give it a try, though. Do I have to download shit or does it just werk?
>>
>>58248205
>I assume I won't be able to seed them anymore for >muh ratio
Why? The joined file is still the same file.
>>
>>58248194
>they constantly bitch about socialism
Yeah, they bitch about international socialism. Which is another, more popular branch of leftist retardation.
>welfare and national healthcare.
they just don't like blacks having it. they would be totally on board with it being available only to whites only and you would've known this had you just talked to them.
>>
I'm trying to install texlive-full, but I get :
E: You don't have enough free space in /var/cache/apt/archives/

On pic related, the error, my df -h and the commands I ran to solve it (it didn't change anything)
>>
>>58248295
Obviously my question is : how do I solve that ?
>>
>>58247616
Thanks. I'll give that a look.
>>
>>58248275
I see them bitch all the time all the time about neets on welfare, board views them as niggers.
>>
>>58248333
yes, they are indeed opposed to "degenerates" using welfare. they have no problem with the concept itself though and this fully displays their leftism.
>>
>>58248394
Let me ask you, last time you called /pol/ leftist, how many accused you of being a shill?
>>
>>58248417
A lot on /pol/ itself, not so much on other boards where most of my interactions with them took place. They usually defend purely leftist economic concepts and some of them even admit their leftism but they are pretty rare.
>>
>>58248295
Use ncdu to find what is taking up space on /var.
>>
>>58248630

it weighed 673.3 MB lol, I should learn to clean my shit

Why do most generals have premature ejaculators? What is the point of making a new thread when this one is still alright and the general traffic isn't high?
>>
>>58248896
lurk moar
>>
>>58249053
That doesn't answer anything. Unless you want to be on the front page, making early threads when there are images and pages available doesn't make sense.
>>
>>58248274
You're right, I tested it out to be sure. I just remember trying that years ago and not being able to seed anything, guess I fucked up something along the way as retarded kids are wont to do.
