See if you can find a CM 212 EVO, Cryorig H7 or something from Be Quiet, Scythe and Thermalright. Those are the brands i'd personally consider for a budget cooler.

how much are you paying for the 760?
and no, 2.5 drives work in desktop builds.
The worst that can happen is the HDD Is encrypted by windows, but besides that, you should be fine.

I'm looking for any tips but trying to keep it ~$1000
>>

If it's for gaming only consider dropping down to i5-6500 and non Z170 mobo.
>>
>>58233846

Curious question: what would justify the current processor and motherboard?
>>
My 5 month old EVGA GTX 1060 made a pop noise and I immediately started smelling burnt solder and there was a bit of smoke. It happened out of the blue. When I took it out of the case a very very small black piece fell out from behind the shroud. Pic related, says "20|05" on top of it. After taking off the cooler it seems to have came off from near where the fan plugs into the pcb.

Any chance evga is going to replace it if I can even find the original invoice(I probably can't)? I feel like they're just going to blame it on me
>>
>>58233914
If you plan to OC it, CPU intensive stuff and maybe the future proofing meme.
>>
>>58233914
Well one it's nice to have so the PC lasts longer. But pushing high FPS in games like 144hz or 165hz tends to run into CPU/RAM speed limitations. Some emulators need strong single thread performance. Some games like WoW and Overwatch will gain enough FPS from a 6600k to justify it. If you need strong multi thread for like compiling or transcoding or whatever then you want to be looking at a i7e chip.

The i5 6500 is basically a 2500k. It's slow as fuck because of low it's clocked. Even a 6600k at stock speed is significantly faster because it runs at 3.9ghz.
>>
What do you guys think about my low to mid tier gaming rig?

Thinking about getting the ASUS Z170-P LGA 1151 for i7 6700k, but I'm concerned when I read a bunch of DOA reviews on newegg. Is this actually a really cheap product? It seems like all reviews of motherboards have a bunch of DOA reviews.

This is my first build and I'm building an entry level gaming rig. The most demanding game I'm planning to run is Witcher 3, I don't really care about silky smooth 60 fps but I'd be really happy if this could run it like that at medium settings. I'm from eastern europe and prices from picrelated are more or less same locally.
Except case - I'm getting this one for 70
Mobo - 88
SSD - 86
PSU - 62
I'll have 1tb hdd for free soon so it's not included.
The whole package in this hellhole would cost me 706 euros in total which is more or less my budget.

My main concern if I should get cpu cooler and if I really should I can cut case to something like Deepcool Tesseract and bottlenecks from cpu or gpu. I'm not planning to OC or getting any insane crossfire combos so I'm pretty comfortable with 520W PSU, maybe I can go even lower?
>>
>>58234207
Why are you buying separate memory? That's way too expensive.
Get it as a two. Almost any other will be cheaper.
How much is your PSU anyway? Don't cheap out on it.
>>
>>58232266
New pc that i just built: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WtN2jc

What you guys think?
Did i fuck up???
>>
>>58234207
You can easily drop down to H110, get the cheachest 8GB kit of 2133 RAM you can find, BX200 isn't really good, what are other options, maybe PNY CS1311, MX300 or SanDisk Ultra II?
GPU is ok, but don't expect much from it, after all it's a gimped version of the 1060 6G. Also do not spend a stupid amount of money on the case, stay under 50 bucks. PSU is good, but others may be cheaper and with your build even a 430W PSU would be fine.
>>
>>58234289
the fuck are you using a Xeon for?
>>
>>58233654
This is almost exactly my build, except a 1070 instead of the 1060. Pretty solid, there are a few changes you could make if you wanted it to drop below $1,000 but I see no issues with this.

>>
>>58234295
Thank you for H110, looks cheap and I'll look into it, any advice about all those PRO-VD and shit?

The reason I tried to go with pair because of dual channel, does it really matter on build such as this?

I have PNY CS1311 slighyly cheaper and will look on it. With money from mobo I can also consider Samsung 850 EVO.
>>
>>58234435
>PRO-VD
It's an ok mobo, no idea what other boards your sellers have in stock though.
>does it really matter on build such as this?
Not really. If budget is an issue stick to good value parts rather than to worry about stuff like this.
>I have PNY CS1311 slighyly cheaper
Buy it. The CS1311 is one of the best if not the best budget SSD out there.
>consider Samsung 850 EVO
Don't, it's a great SSD but not for your budget, invest that money into other parts.

What do you guys think currently offers the best value for a 144hz 1080p machine? There are so many great options right now for sub $400 GPUs.
You have:
RX 480, in my case I can buy a $30 AIO mount for it and put my extra one on it, hitting around 1500mhz and surpasing the 1060 6gb for only $230
GTX 1060 6gb, overall inferior to the rx 480, except in blizzard games, which I play a lot of
R9 Fury, at $230 this is probably what I will be buying.
R9 Fury X at $310 its very very tempting
Cheap GTX 1070 at $375 not sure I want to spend this much when it seems I can get pretty close with the other cards. I think it's a bit much for 1080p 144hz.
>>
>>58234207
do yourself a favor and get a better cpu, you should have a cpu that will last you awhile without bottleneck because gpu's are short term toys that are surpassed and made irrelevant. cpu's on the other hand take much longer to become obsolete.
>>
>>58234614
really
I just figured I had fucked up when I didn't get a CPU cooler when I built my PC almost 2 years ago
should I just apply new thermal paste and maybe that will bring down the temperature to a normal level?
>>
https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/list/XVHJBP
How'd I do?

Ignore the warning, it's bullshit. Also most of the prices are listed as higher than they actually were because pcpartpicker doesn't list a lot of NZ retailers.
>>
>>58234207
Specific reasoning for the 3gb 1060? If your countries prices are the same as the US there are some rx 480s that are cheaper. I can understand if it does better in the games you are building the PC for but I just want to be sure you're not selecting it blindly. The witcher 3 is single player, you will move on to other games.

Most people who play games on PC find one online game that they love and end up playing only that, be it WoW, LoL, OW, Dota 2, SC2, TF2, CS GO, whatever. Not that this is all that relevant here I suppose.
>>
>>58234349
I think you can sufficiently "fuck around" with VMs with far cheaper CPUs and unless you needed this right now I really believe that you are the kind of the person who has the most to gain from Zen bringing competition to the high end desktop market. I would have gone with a 6700k if you want the HT, a nice z170 board that can bring it to high clocks, and you could have got a cheaper rx 480. Unless you are overclocking the rx 480 there's no point to go for that model and if you are then you would replace the stock cooler and the MSI armor models have the same PCB.
>tfw no gainward or galax in US

You spent a lot of money, it's a powerful machine, I just would have done a lot different. That is assuming this isn't bait.
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PWWhKZ

How is this build? I will use for gaming.
>>
>>58234725
the cryorig c7 is also a low profile cooler, check if it's cheaper in your country as it is in the US.
>>
>>58234828
Do you really need a windowed case?
>>
>>58234858
The case doesn't matter to me.
>>
>>58234828
It's the bare standard build suggested to people. Get the EVGA FTW 1070, it has like 10 power phases and overclocks very well. Unless you bought the gigabyte for aesthetics. Good DDR4 can give up to a 8% increase in FPS, varying by the game. Why not look at the games you plan on playing and see how they scale with ram speed? I would hate myself forever if I had 2133 in a nice z170 board. You're also overpaying for your SSD by a ton. Just get the cheapest TLC SSD you can find, I just bought a 500gb for $120. Samsung isn't worth it, they all are able to saturate SATA3, if you want premium storage you need to take a trip to PCI-E land.

Are ultrawide monitors all that great? The 34" ones that are 'gaming' monitors with 3440x1440 resolution? Are the ones that's not curved any better than the curved version?
>>
>>58234855
I did have that in mind, but I went for the Noctua as it's smaller and has a lower TDP, as well as having a very good reputation.

That might of been a mistake come to think of it, but too late now.

>>
>>58234146
I've had it for 2 years with a few replacements. Most of. The hard drives I came across for free and some of the parts were gifts
>>
>>58234931
Best monitors right now are 1440p 165hz, 1080p 240(265?)hz, and 4k 60hz depending on how you use the thing. Over all ultrawide just seems inconvenient to me. It would take a ton of desk space. Some games don't even support it.

I would love to have a 40" 4k TV as a monitor for my general desktop work flow because it would have the same PPI as my current 23" monitors do. It must be incredible.

1440p 144hz+ isn't even that expensive anymore but it's hard to run a lot of games at that refresh. It's a happy middleground. I would still rather play a RPG @4k and a FPS@ highest refresh possible.

1080p 144hz is a great economical choice but you're clearly not concerned about money so maybe the new super high refresh monitors would be of interest to you.

dumb question time
can I unplug a fan while the pc is going? I just want to know which one is rattling hardcore
>>
I've noticed lately that when I overclock my R9 280x and do intensive tasks that there's a smell coming from my computer. I assumed it was the power supply (old Rosewell was just out of warranty), and bought an EVGA G2 to fix the problem. Don't like dropping $100 so easily, but it's a cheaper solution than my PSU taking my whole PC down with it.

However, I decided to play with overclocking a bit more today after I got the new PSU working and brought my 280x up to 1130 Mhz. When I ran FurMark, that same odor of burning plastic emanated from my computer, even stronger due to the new fans I plopped into my computer. Now, I don't know if this is the new PSU still offgassing, but I think this means that there's something wrong with my graphics card.

What should I do - should I replace my card or fix it somehow? The temps didn't get too outrageous with Furmark (78 C), but I'm really worried that some sort of fire may start if I fuck around with it too much.

Is the smell necessarily bad? Is it safe to keep running my GPU till it dies? And is it worth returning my new EVGA PSU and going back to the old one since I have now isolated the problem?

Thoughts on this build? I'm quite new to this so have approached a couple of computer stores down in Ausfailia for some help.

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/YW4G2R

I'm aware that generally the "gaming" mobo's are much more expensive than the standard mobo, could anyone explain why they're basically the same thing? Was also told to wait for CES 2017 before building, as the 7th gen intel cpu's will be released. There are 3 parts I've been recommended that are not on the website that I have placeholders in for, they are:

CPU: Intel CPU i5 6600k > Intel CPU i5 7600k
MOBO: Asus Z170-E > ASUS ROG STRIX Z270-E
Heatsink: Corsair H105 > Corsair H115i

The strix mobo is going to be like 300 dollars, am I getting ripped off for that?

Put an EVGA 1070 in it and the heat fins direct heat up/down into the motherboard/bottom of the case or window/top of the case

So the heat is either bouncing from the heatfin directly back into the fins or it is hotboxing the limited room a mITX case would already have and infecting the CPU radiator with heat

Maybe if a GPU with horizontal fans actually fit (not using a blower that shit gets too loud at over 1600mhz) then the cooling situation would make more sense since the fins could direct heat out the back through I/O

I was here yesterday and had some help, but I'd like another opinion since I changed some items on my list. For what I want, I am looking to make an enthusiast build that is designed for video editing, graphic design, and some games on the side. Along with that, I would like to utilize water cooling into this build as well that loops the processor and graphics card together.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8wnjvV
(I might not purchase the cooler. I have it up so the site can ignore the error.)

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I would go about setting up the custom water cooling system? I know I need the radiator for it, but I'm not sure about what kind of reservoir to look into and the other stuff and how it should flow. I don't want to overspend and not get what I need.

The general complaints/issues I've seen is that they're too wide and wreck the UI for a lot of games because nobody supports them.

I want to get a budget streaming/editing rig, and I hear that some zen CPUs have 16 threads?

Is that true?
>>

Next week they will be announced officially (and probably priced), they are probably in production right now or will be very soon.

February at the earliest (pre-orders etc.) so expect march-april.

The high end zen for the general public will be 8 cores and 2 threads per core (16 threads). There are other versions of zen that go to 32 and 64 threads, but those are meant for servers.
>>
If I'm getting lower GPU performance than expected running at full load, and trouble booting back up afterwards, would those be signs of my power supply hitting its limit?

Where are they announcing it?

I'll be at CES next week, have they said there?

First time building a PC here, and I think I fucked up, Anons... This cooler is supposed to be a hybrid, my processor is AMD, but the thing is, the only way I could set him up was in a vertical position, meaning the fan would be throwing the air upwards, and my case doesn't have a top opening.

How bad is this, should I keep it like this or should I stick to the fan that comes with the processor?

Your CPU cooler is blowing air away from the CPU. It achieves this whether it is pointing horizontally or vertically.

It is up to the case fans to remove hot air from inside the case, not your CPU fan.

I have never RMA'd anything in my life and I'm hesitant to do so.

My 5 month old evga 1060 gb made a pop and let out a little smoke, reaked like burnt solder. It was after playing the witcher for like 6 hours straight. I had a third party cooler on it and it was running at stock speeds around 50c. When I took it out of the case i heard something fall out of the card. I couldn't find what it was though and after looking at the PCB I don't notice anything missing.

What are the chances that evga actually replaces it? I feel like they're just going to blame it on me. I have the stock cooler back on it now. This is my most prized possession because I'm a poor grad student up to my neck in debt.

This really sucks /g/uys.
>>
I currently have 16GB (8+8) RAM right now and the same model RAM is out of stock and I need it within the next 3 days.

There is a model from the same company, same frequency, same latency, same timing, same voltage, but is 8GB (4+4)

First off is 24GB unstable? I've heard of 1,2,4,8,16,32 but I don't see 24GB all that often.

Second off, even with everything listed as the same except for the capacity, will it have stability issues?
>>
>>58246129
You should have at a minimum 2 case fans - one drawing cold air in, the other blowing hot air out.
>>
>>58246537
RAM should never be giving you stability issues. If your RAM is causing CTD's you need to run a memory test to identify what RAM stick is bad, and replace it.
>>
>>58246537
>First off is 24GB unstable
No
>but I don't see 24GB all that often
Because you might as well go for a full 32GB set of DDR3 if you need the memory space.
>even with everything listed as the same except for the capacity, will it have stability issues?
No, unless you're overclocking. The "don't mix RAM kits" meme is for using DDR2 (and older) memory and overclocking/using XMP profile, which may cause stability issues in the long term.
>>

>>
>>58246558

>>
>>58246558
That's not how airflow actually works. If you wanted air to flow diagonally inside the case, then you need a fan mounted inside forcing the air through. There are too many obstacles and natural turbulence inside cases to make that possible. Do a smoke test and see for yourself.

>>58246643
Dual channel DDR4 only. I doubt motherboard makers will do a DDR3 conversion without AMD making allowances for it.
>>
>>58246607
>>58246602
Thanks, didn't know it was a "meme"

I don't plan on overclocking.

I'm just scraping the surface of my current 16GB capacity and I'm often getting out of memory errors if I open too many tabs in firefox, and even just having chrome open in general. Mainly because I'm running demanding stuff currently, but if RAM mixing isn't something I should worry about then I guess I can just go find another 16GB kit instead of buying an 8GB one.
>>

No, this complete bullshit. The core series is just a marketing term for how Intel segments their chips up. Haswell and Haswell-e have similar IPC (cache differences) but rather different clocks.

>And yes, sure, if you ONLY use hyperthreaded tasks with plenty of threads available

You have no data to support that whatsoever. Even if this belief is true it mens AMD has a superior SMT implementation to Intel - something Intel has been refining for a decade.

Are those the AMD benchmarks that said it beat a 6950x? Or is that the benchmarks saying that it *almost* beats a 6900k? Or is that the *official AMD benchmark* that shows it beating a 6800k?
Or did they lower their standards again?
Or is that the blender benchmark?
The one where clock speeds didn't matter to AMD?
Or the one where clock speed differences are so important that AMD actually wins even when they lose?
Either way, this highly multithreaded program that takes advantage of 100% of zen, just barely beating beaten by Intel (which destroys zen in single-thread)
I mean this is all based on your assumption that zen will drive down Intel core CPUs, a fucking 6600k at that, which has absolutely no competition at all in the single thread
But all these multi-threaded benchmarks favoring and and single threaded be channels where it loses to a i3 must mean than zen is great for single core right?

1060 isn't designed with certain types of data processing that can be done in parallel instead of in sequence, while the RX480 is.

The new API's - both DX12 and Vulkan - put a focus on in-parallel data processing, which the 1060 will not be able to take advantage of. The advantage the RX480 has in this area will become more and more apparent as more DX12/Vulkan games come out. This isn't an issue restricted to just the 1060 - the entire 10x0 line from nvidia isn't able to do the parallel processing that AMD's GPU's can.

The 1060 is a dx11 card. The RX480 is a DX12/Vulkan card.

For you.

That's an overpriced SSD and a crappy power supply
Its over 1800€ for a 1080/6700K build, you could get a better price for sure but at least they give you the right chipset to overclock, what cooler does it have? Does it come with another drive or just the 500GB SSD?

You dont have to clean it every mont

just go over it with the vacuum as soon as you think ur pc is gettng slower (remember to turn off powesupply but keep plugged in)

well, i guess that's a good thing.

I have a better power supply in my current rig (850W Corsair Black) that I can salvage / exchange if I need to, but I'm given to understand that the 1080 runs fairly cool and on a low wattage. Also, the 960 m.2 SSD was released today and brings a reasonable price point compared to the 950, and has like six times the write speed of a last-gen drive like 850. It seems like a reasonable price. I am currently not planning to use it as a media computer so 500gb should be enough for the operating system, the creative suite and a number of games.

>reasonable price point
>like $1200 for the 2TB

Every single thing you just said is wrong it's incredible
>>
>>58249121
How the fuck does a vacuum clean a water cooled system?
>>
>>58249268
Why the fuck would you get the latest SSD drive in a 2TB size? That's fucking retarded. Storage space never has a linear price/capacity relationship.

Which parts were wrong? I live in Finland. The 960 m.2 was literally just released here (most retailers won't even get it until the second week of January). The 1080 literally has a 500W recommendation on the official nvidia specs.

First PC I'll be building.
Mainly going to be used for emulation/game dev stuff.
Anything I could get cheaper/anything more I need?
