>Fast RAM significantly increases framerate in more than half the current AA games. I don't have the benchmarks with me, but you can find them in eurogamer's i5 6500 review.

Can someone confirm this? From what I understood, DDR3 ram frequency did have a significant difference when comparing the stock speed to ~2400 in some games like Fallout 4. Is this also the case with DDR4, comparing 2000 to 3000? I haven't seen any bechmarks showing this.
>>
>>58191920
depends on a game, but "significant increase" is an overstatement. you will gain from 3 to 10 more fps though.
generally if you're already getting a z170 board then you may as well pay extra few $ to cheapest 3000mhz ram.
>>
I have a thread up right now but figure this would be a better place to ask

Thoughts on this build? Using it for uni work, programming, graphic design, and some gaming (mainly Overwatch and PlanetSide 2).
>>
>>58192034
If you're only gonna play overwatch and planetside 2 a 1070 is a bit overkill.
>>
>>58192034
looks fine though i'd get msi gtx 1070 gaming x instead and imo you're spending too much on a psu.
>>
>>58192028
http://www.techspot.com/article/1171-ddr4-4000-mhz-performance/page3.html
Found some benchmarks. Seems to be a ~10 fps increase in most games comparing 2000 to 3000, just as long as your gpu is beafy enough to not be a bottleneck too often.
>>
Hey, will this case be fine for a gtx1080, Z170, 6700k, i110gt build, or will I need a full tower?

you never need a full tower
it'll be fine
>>
A lot of new games seem to be pretty CPU intensive; I can't even get a clean 60 fps for The Witcher 3 at ultra with my 1060.

Should I be looking to upgrade my i5-3450 if I want to play the latest games at a high setting?
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/

Very by the numbers build I feel, first time doing this myself. Just wondering if I'm missing something here or paying too much for something.

And yes, I will be editing/streaming with this which is why I opted for the i7 and 1070.

>>58192346
From what I understand, as long as your CPU isn't bottlenecking your card I don't think upgrading it will do much of anything

AQ good reason to wait given the amoun t of money yo uare aiming to spend. If AMD doesn't release a chip within your price bracket and/or it does not perform good enough you've lost nothing - you gain the knowledge that Intel was the right choice.

If AMD does release a competitive chip within said price bracket buying the 6700k might mean you losing out on a good deal for your needs (hypothetical scenario, a 6 core/12thread zen chip for similar money to the 6700k). As much as /g/ memes about always waiting we are under a week away from finding out more informatrion and less than 3 months from the absolute latest point AMD will release zen (as Su plainly stated they are on track for Q1). Given the recent french review of the A0 engineering sample holding its own against broadwell-e there is so much to gain by waiting and seeing how things play out.

If you were going for an i5 or i3 then meh - even if AMD is competitive in that segment you won't be going wrong going Intel right this second.

>What's wrong with corsair PSUs? Overpriced? Fail rate?
Corsair's CX series has shit capacitors and bad build quality all around. Plus, if you overclock your shit you're gonna come pretty close to 550w, and you don't want a low quality PSU to put out full load constantly, that's just asking for a house fire.

Depending on how far you want to push your chip and your budget most 990fx boards are good for some high clocks. That said the sabertooth (lol paying the premium on the crosshair) and the M5A99FX PRO sit at the top of the food chain.

As for a cooler skip the AIO and get a good dual tower cooler (again, budget is going to be the limiting factor but the silver arrow is great price vs performance).

Using older bios.

Asrock was the first to allow OC'ing of locked skylake, other motherboard vendors followed suit.

All you have to do is get bios version 1.4 or 1.5 and downgrade to that and it will allow you to BCLK overclock it.

Pics related.

Despite what fanboys on either side might tell you, they're both fine. The 1060 is a bit better in some games, the 480 on others. If you want to save money, you could also just get the 4GB version of 480. There isn't much reason not to, unless you're thinking of maybe getting a second one later.

So I have a new i5-6600k, and I also use it for integrated graphics. On idle, just desktop, the percentages are good with 0%-12%

However, when loading up a game the CPU starts to use absurd amounts for the game, 70%-90% just for 100% orange juice. However Windows 8.1 (not activated) still runs smooth, and when opening another game at the same time it will share CPU usage while with the other game, and lower itself still maintaining stable frame rates. Programs like Opera, or steam, and even Skype have nice CPU percentages of usage, usually under 10%. All of the CPU cores are doing equal work and have similar temperatures, so no outlier.

What would be causing this issue?
>>
>>58194540
You use igpu, it uses the CPU.

If you don't use igpu, the computer uses your descreete gpu.

What's a good Motherboard for an i5 6600K processor that won't break the bank? The Microcenter near me is giving a decent discount if you buy that processor with a compatible motherboard and I was just gifted an old full tower case I feel I need to do something with. Haven't had an actual desktop computer since I was little so I've kinda been out of the loop on this stuff.
>>
Is there any reason to format storage drives as anything other than NTFS if I want to dualboot windows and linux?
>>
>>58195394
A "k" processor should be paired with any mobo using the Z170 chipset and other features you need like
-enough rear usb ports
-enough sata ports for your drives/optical
-enough expansion ports (most people only want a graphics card)
-enough ram slots, some people want more than two
-onboard audio like spdif if thats what you're into

so just use Z170 as a starting point, many of these are not expensive. there's no point spending more if you don't need 5 PCI ports, etc. another cheaper option is to get the i5 6500, don't overclock, and pair it with an H170 motherboard instead
>>
How important is a good motherboard and how much should I pay for one?
What motherboards do you recommend? I've read the bus is the biggest bottleneck so I though getting a good MB would be a priority.

Over the board EVGA G and SeaSonic G are better than Corsair, they are cheaper and don't use non-japanese capacitors, especially not Ltec ones.

I'd get an Asrock Z170 mobo if you get that CPU. Mainly because you can OC it. Other vendors started locking down hard after intel issued microcode update. The specific mobo that you seleced seems to even remove the ability to downgrade to lower bios revision.

As for Asrock Z170, you want a bios revision before the "removed skylake oc function" updates.

I would say the i7-6700 (non-K), you can still overclock it a little with an ASRock Z170 motherboard, plus it's around $30 cheaper than the 6700K.

Alright guys, last week I built a '99 machine with

Asus P5GD1-VM
Pentium 671
512mb ram (fresh)
6600gt
a new Thermaltake 350W psu

so plugged everything together and turned on, it works but doesn't display anything. Tried changing almost every part from gpu to ram and bought a new psu but sucks it, it just turns on normally and keeps going on like that. The monitor goes to sleep mode immediately. Even jumpers seem to be in order.

It doesn't have mobo speaker curently and I'm having hard time diagnosing it. Any ideas?
>>
I have this Fracal Note 605 case.
I want to put some nice parts into it. I'm looking at
ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6GB DUAL OC
ASUS H110-PLUS
Intel Core i5 6500 3.2 GHz 6MB
2x Kingston HyperX 4GB (1x4GB) DDR4 2133MHz CL14 Fury Black
Kingston UV400 240GB
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

You guys see any problemos?
The case allows GPUs up to 280mm, and the GTX 1060 is 255mm. If I remove some storage in the case it should be aight.

Any notes on the CPU etc?
Will the cooling get fucked in such a case?
>>

Very common mistake is plugging into mobo instead of video card. I've RMA'd a board because of that mistake

This is the bios update site, so if you intend to overclock, you might (or might not) need to downgrade to the 2.4 version.

I've started smelling a burning smell from my computer again last night when I was playing with Furmark and giving my GPU a mild OC (~10%). Once about 5 months ago my computer crashed while playing Crysis and I smelled a burning smell - I disassembled it but couldn't find the source. Now I'm having a similar smell but it isn't crashing, and I still can't isolate it.

I think it's my PSU - a Rosewill Hive 550 that's just out of its 3-year warranty. Should I buy a new one, and what should I buy that will last me the next few years without breaking the bank? I'm running an i5-4670k with an R9 280x on an Asrock Z80-something.
>>
>>58196836
>But we're not talking about older versions
The standard RM line.

>And where is that?
Sweden.. yeah, no wonder. No idea what inet.se is, but it doesn't seem like a price comparison tool, so i wouldn't count on that, always use price comparison tools.
I did a quick search with the first best swedish price comparison tool i could find, this are the results:

If you suspect its the PSU you shut it down right fucking now and toss the unit - never, EVER gamble when it comes to power supplies given their tendency to take other parts with them.

>>
>>58196961
The results seem to show that the 650 evga g2 is about the same price as the rm650x, as is rm750x the same compared to the 750 g2. So again with the price being the same, what makes the g2 better than the rmx?
>>
>>58196362
That's an H170, not a Z170. If you can go for a 6600k and a Z170
>>

Theoretically 500W should be fine, too. I have no idea what you're doing with your PC and it might be some other component.
Have you tried cleaning everything including the PSU? They can collect much shit over three years.

>Corsair CX series
Fuck no. The only models from Corsair that aren't trash are the expensive high-end models and the Veangence, but that's only an option in EU because of it's price.

>Which EVGA or Seasonic should I get?
EVGA G2 or G3, SeaSonic G (whatever) or others like Super Flower Leadex.
>>
Are the Athlons memes?
>>
>>58197266

Super Flowerr's units generally aren't available in burgerland iirc, but they are rebranded...possibly by seasonic (I'm not 100% certain but its something jonnyguru has mentioned a few times).
>>
>>58196570
RMA is return to manufacturer, it's when you yell at Jewegg for your money back and ship the broken thing back to them
>>
Are there any compatibility issues with GPUs and the CPU/Motherboard? Or will pretty much any GPU work?
Want to go for a CPU-heavy build with an adequate GPU.
>>
>>58197151
650W G2 is cheaper than the RMx, for 750W it's the other way round. Why would you buy the G2? Because Super Flower platforms never caught fire and are extremely reliable.
No idea if the 50 bucks is much in New Somalia, but imho the G2 is superiour and it you want the 650W version it's also cheaper.
I'd only chose the 550W RMx over the G2 since its 122 bucks cheaper, but since i don't have your price problems where i live, i won't. I can get a EVGA G3 550W for 99€.
>>
>>58197356

For a single gpu on a consumer tier board (i.e not a server form factor) shit just plugs in. Its only when you enter multiple gpu setups do you potentially run into issues.
>>
>>58197356
Any modern GPU will work with any modern motherboard.

Keep in mind if you're using less than PCIe x16 you might suffer lower performance.
>>
>>58197356
They'll all work.
>>
>>58197266
>Have you tried cleaning everything including the PSU? They can collect much shit over three years.

I try to clean out my desktop a couple times a year but it's a losing battle since my parent's house is old and dusty as fuck. But I never thought about cleaning INSIDE the PSU - I assumed that the stored charge in the capacitors would kill me.

It's also possible that it's the GPU - most of the crashes come from when I'm playing with overclocking and it gets really hot with games. Now, at normal clock it runs fine, but I do get some instability when I overclock and it gets hot, plus I've got some weird sounds coming from the computer.

Of course, most of these issues have come up only in the last 6 months or so, and I've worked mostly without crashes until my summer playthough of Crysis and D44M. How do I check if it's my graphics card instead?
>>
>>58197300
It's almost 2017, you really don't want to get a dual-core that doesn't even have hyperthreading. And they do offer fair performance for the price. Still, if your budget is that low, you might as well get an APU and not worry about dGPU until you have more money. Or alternatively, you're not gaming in which case an APU is still better because you don't need to get a discrete GPU at all that way.
>>
>>58197311
>Super Flowerr's units generally aren't available in burgerland
Lol why, because it's not US made, is some trade agreement blocking it? Also no idea if SeaSonic rebrands Super Flower PSUs, but EVGA certainly does.
>>
>>58197409
This really sound like you fucked up something for good, or at least you're close to do so.
>>
>>58197300
I've heard good things about the x4 860. It's an overclockable quad core, and really cheap. I'm doing a build with one in a few days here.
>>
>>58197311
>seasonic
>rebranding other manufacturers
I'm pretty damn sure they don't do that when they could be selling their own units instead. Selling your competitor's units doesn't really make any sense.
>>
>>58197372
>Because Super Flower platforms never caught fire
So the super flower platforms never caught fire and the platform which RMx is built on did?

Do you have any proof of this?
>>
>>58197417
Probably an exclusivity deal with someone rebranding them
>>
>>58197417

Its probably not worth the effort to market under their own name.

>>58197445

Then it must be EVGA - I get the two confused on the psu front.
>>
>>58197445
>Implying it doesn't make sense

Could be that you didn't fuck up anything at all. If everythin runs fine under load while not OC'd, it should be still good.
If it doesn't it's most likely the part/s you OC'd and/or the PSU.
>>
>>58197496
Depends entirely on SeaSonic's marketing philosophy. I don't work there. I assure you they would have done some focus groups to see if it was worth it.

Socket is the hardware level. Chipset is mainly the software layer. Intel is a jewish company so they prohibit things like Xeons running on cheaper H motherboard or even Z motherboards in some cases.

It's the chipset, but usually all CPUs using the same socket are compatible with all chipsets that have that socket. For instance, I'm pretty sure new Xeon e3s are still pin-compatible with other LGA1151 CPUs, but not supported on consumer-grade chipsets.

>was the same price as Adata and Sandisk SSD for like a month
They're a standard SSD and Samsung tends to focus on speed of what they call high end, there's plenty that are "better" as in more reliable but at normal speeds (which is still pretty fucking fast, just not as fast as the 3 SSDs Samsung makes that's faster than the rest of the market)
This is my pick for "best SSD"

What do you think of this you /g/ays

https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/list/m6GJBP

I'm going to use it for gaming obviously, on a 1440p high refresh rate monitor (haven't chosen the exact monitor yet). Regarding the CPU, I was going to get the 6600k but thought I'd step it up on the chance that future games would utilise this one better. Am I a fucking retard in thinking that or am I playing smart.

Any other criticisms or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That's what I worry about. I think a 6600k is just dandy but I would kick myself if around the corner, games start utilising things that the i7 6700k has over that. I thought it was a small price to pay for potential future proofing (this case being the only sensible application of "future proofing" imo, but hey glad to be convinced otherwise)

Then get a i5 like I said. The only big difference between the i7 and the i5 is Hyperthreading.
>>
>>58198605

>>
>>58198605
Many games are using DX12, which more efficiently uses hyperthreading
As much as I'd rather save hundreds of dollars getting a 6600k, I will admit that if I had to bet on it I would say the 6700ks hyperthreading will become better as new games come out
Zen is AMDs next gen of CPUs. And as normal, amd is focusing on multicore, multithreading and less about single-thread IPC, which *as of now* IPC is more important for games
DX12 will hopefully change that

That's debatable. Unless AMD's implementation of SMT blows Intel out of the water, the benchmarks we've seen so far suggest that Zen's single-thread IPC will be very close to Skylake's.

Does that mean until games start making use of this, a Zen would actually preform poorly considering all things? I'm all for thinking ahead, but games are only starting to head in that direction. We don't really have any single-threaded benchmarks of Zen yet(or any trustworthy independent benchmarks, for that matter), but the ones we do have suggest that on a per-core basis, a Zen-core with SMT is about as good as a Broadwell-core with SMT. What this PROBABLY means is that their single-core performance is nearly identical as well, and Broadwell and Skylake have pretty much identical IPC as well.
>>
>>58198769
Yes. That's what is expected.
Intel is a safe choice for quad core gaymen CPUs with powerhouse cores though if you don't need raw multithreaded power for $600+
Zen will hopefully be competing against xeons and Intels high end, high core count "extreme" CPUs, but nobody actually expects zen to rival core CPUs in single thread performance
And even then, DX12 tops out at 6 cores, I'm sure a quad core with hyperthreading would just as fine as an 8 core for games
>>
>>58198771

Broadwell and skylake are within margin of error of each other in a lot of software - its only when that huge slab of L4 comes into play does broadwell gain the upper hand which is somewhat offset by skylake's higher clocks.

Then again the 5775c competed against 6700k but I forget if baby broadwell still has the L4.

It seems the mere mention of Zen has thrown this thread into a fury, how ironic.

I will stick to the 6700k because I believe the Zen is too much too soon. If it turns out to rival how top-end cpus run things out now, and then goes on to future proof even harder with its shitload of cores and threads and what have you...

Well-regarded 80+ gold (like Evga G2 series or anything manufactured by seasonic) if you can afford it, 80+ bronze otherwise(but check some reviews first).
Modular matters for cable management(which is more important if you get a small case), but it's not really a huge deal, for the most part.
Check your case specs, pretty much all of them are designed to fit a standard ATX-form-factor PSU.

It relocates the background image when you update, if you deleted the image it'll revert to default color background

coil whine is usually psu's or gpu's fault. just google "[part name] coil whine" and see if it comes up frequently or read reviews on amazon or somewhere. though you should be fine with asus 480 and seasonic psu

Have you bought a Windows key from there before then?
It looks too good to be true.

why give ms money for no reason?
>>
>>58192462
Doubt it. All the benchmarks online have it running at 75+fps and System Requirements Lab says it meets the recommended requirement, whereas my i5-3450 doesn't even meet the minimum.
>>
>>58196942 here. I'm going to pick up a EVGA Supernova 750 to replace my presumably dying Rosewill HIVE. Also picking up some 120mm fans for my NZXT Tempest 410 case. While I'm ordering these things and have my computer opened up, what else should I buy to future-proof my PC? I have:

i5-4670k
R9 280x
ASRock Z87 Pro-3
some WD 2GB HDD
2x G.Skill Sniper 4GB DDR3 RAM

Wasn't looking to spend a lot of money, but I'm grabbing that expensive PSU for peace of mind and a 10-year warranty so I guess that hope's going out the door.
>>
>>58199722

cool. I was reading somewhere about "green" mobos giving off a whine too. Looking at my psu now though, its a
CORSAIR
don't ever use that meme site.
the witcher 3 is one of the most demanding games for both cpu&gpus. i wouldn't expect stable 60fps on ultra with a 1060.
>>
How are the samsung nVME m.2 drives?
>>
>>58199818
This, I agree
Witcher is one of the few games I can only run 60fps with a 1070 at 1440p (hairworks OFF btw)
I wouldn't expect a 1060 to get THAT much more than 60fps at 1080p

I'm gathering parts for a mATX z270 build. I can get a 960 EVO 500gig for 200 bucks.
>>
>>58199855

nVME or SATA for an SSD?
>>
>>58199898
Don't get Z270 if you don't have an optane drive in your hand right now (that's the ONLY benefit to Z270 and optane doesn't even exist yet, neither do Z270 motherboards for that matter)
The 960 pro is a fast as it gets, but the 950 pro is also fucking fast and likely getting cheaper

NVME is faster
SATA is fast enough imo and hundred of dollars cheaper
NVME isn't always blazing fast though, really depend on your SSD itself
>>
>>58199958

It is one of the hard decisions I need to make for my upcoming "always bet on AMD" build. I have a gorrillion HDDs anyway and I wouldn't mind sacrificing some pcie lanes for nVME but if the cost is going to be prohibitive per gb (its effectively just a boot drive) i'll take the speed hit and go sata if I can get a mobo with enough ports.

Also note this isn't a fair comparison to samsungs absurdly fast M2 drives, the 960 pro for example is just insane, not sure how visible the speeds will actually be though, probably getting program-specific gains

>>58199922
At least from what I've been told, you won't see much of a difference in everyday usage.

Ok then try to get a SeaSonic G PSU, more reliable/stable PSUs are better for OC.

Pic related is my current build (Except running Windows 10). Looking to bite the bullet sometime soon and upgrade my GTX 770 (2gb vram is killing me) to a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1070 Windforce Gaming 8gb. Anyone got a similar card at the moment? Any criticisms or advice there? Listed on umart for $569 atm. (I'm in Aus)

Running two monitors and current games (Just got Titanfall 2) on higher settings is dropping me below 60fps too often for my liking and running in the 50ºc's - 70ºc's. Also doesn't help that I'm looking at replacing one of my screens with a 27" sometime soon too.

Next on the list would be looking at upgrading my CPU as it runs close to, if not max most of the time. Someone recommended looking at an i7 6700k. Any suggestions or criticisms there? I haven't looked too much into this one yet.

Upgrading being the slippery slope it is, further down the track I'm considering a new case, and 16gb ram too but those aren't too urgent.
