The response is pretty poor on either without ANC/Bluetooth active.
Digital operation activates the EQ which patches up major issues, but the EQ choice is still somewhat questionable, and they still aren't amazing. Could apply additional EQ of your own.

Which one is less bad in passive mode? Personally the Sony, I think, whereas I would say the Bose wins in active mode.

Comfortable. Good noise isolation is important to feel comfortable. It is the main reason I want to buy something new. I don't want to hear the pricks I live with and the neighbours.

>Sound signature
Not sure what to say here. I want to use it mostly for watching TV series and playing games. I do listen to music, but just as a background, I don't need some superb quality.

Shit

Also it is important to have a detachable capable. Bluetooth not required.

Someone already recommended m40x, but without elaborating.

Hey, newbie when it comes to audio, I know a little bit, but not enough to say I ordered the right thing. The loving gf got me a pair of DT 880 Pro's 250 ohms.

I could tell, as she also told me, that I would need an amp for these.

So I thought my best option was a well praised budget DAC/amp.

I also got a nice toslink to output from my motherboard. Will this be enough?

Yeah. everything should be fine then. If you feel you can't hear a difference or there's a problem with the amp/setup then I'm assuming you can return it hassle free with amazon.
>>
>>58179726
That was the plan, I didn't think headphones need anything crazy for noticeable difference via an amp/dac, enough so I could find a combo that had optic out.

If you know any upgrades under $150 that fit my criteria in case this doesn't work out?

I looked at doing a Schiit set up with the standalone boxes, but I was fairly certain my ears are far from golden enough to hear the difference to justify the $200 set up.

>>
>>58179833
Some will say otherwise here but I previously owned the o2 amp+odac combo. Many people look between that and the schit stack as an upgrade or a first good amp setup after buying good headphones. After borrowing my friends fiio e10k I realized that both amps sound exactly the same with hd600's, k702's k712 and fidelio x2's.

Basically, I fell for a meme, the o2 combo is way more expensive than the e10k and it offered nothing besides a line out option that was loud/powefull enough to use plugged into my ps4 controller. Besides that, used direct with your computer they sound exactly the same. Unless your amp is clearly worse than the e10k (which I doubt) the you have nothing to worry about.

So far, I'm thinking about the Beyerdynamic DT-1350-80 headphones for $170

Just want it for mostly isolation and sound quality for train commutes and listening to while in the office, where the other people are sitting pretty close.

Also important is a nice sound quality to price ratio while trying to get something more durable in a higher price tier.

Thoughts or any other recommendations? Thanks

Hello! My current Headset (Plantronics Gamecom 380) has died, so i'm looking to get a headphone (not headset).

>Comfort level: Good. So far my previous headset was not heavy and fitted my head quite nicely. I could move my head around without any problem as long as i wasn't doing it too fast, and it never hurted me
>Sound signature: no idea!
>Past headphones: Plantronics Gamescom 380. I liked pretty much everything about it except two thing: sound quality that didn't suits my needs, and the cable because i hate cables. Otherwise, the weight, size, shape and look were all very satisfying.

Speaking of cables, i was wondering if wireless headset were any good? Considering if i had one i would stand 90% of the time at less than 30cm from the emitter, and the 10% would be 3m away, would it be good for me to buy one? I absolutely hate the cables of headsets and if it means having a bit of sound latency, i don't really mind as long as it sounds good.

Thank you!

Skullcandy Aviators

Strongly preferred the aviators for comfort and they have far superior build quality as the bose pads degraded way to quickly and the linings fallen off. Honestly never noticed sound quality differences but I'm currently using the aviators.

Also are there any cheap products that would let me add a bluetooth connection to a desktop pc? This isn't part of the budget, I'm just looking for suggestions as wires have caused me some annoyance.

if there's no hiss on your current headphones, there's no need
also, most people think it's better to just buy an external dac/amp (see e10k/fulla2) for a bit more money, since there's less influence of other components, and frankly it's easier to plug shit into. Plus you get a handy dandy volume knob

Are there other HM5 pads (or any other brand) that will be comfy and tame the bass without completely neutering it? If that's not possible then something that's comfy and doesn't affect the bass is also fine since I can just EQ it to my liking.

Any recommendations?

Budget - 50$. Flexible, but would want something cheap

Location - USA

Source - Samsung Galaxy S4

Type - IEM/Full Sized are both fine, but if Full-sized I'd want closed ear

Comfort - Pretty comfy is preferred

Sound Signature - Don't care too much, but slight preference for boosted bass.

Past Headphones: Monoprice Noise-Cancelling Bass-boosted IEMs

Mostly need something that can handle a lot of abuse and don't look too ridiculous.

Kinda tl;dr, I want to grab one of the ATH-ADXXXX series for gaming, but it can't be entirely anemic in the bass and sub-bass areas. Might spring for the X2, but I'm not sure that I need that much bass (got that covered with the Lyra II's). Anything ideal in that price range is also in the running. I like the K553 for gaming, but I want to go open and maybe more comfy in the headband.

They do have good and punchy bass but it's not niggerbass. I guess most people here on /hpg/ are just used to anemic Sennheisers and other analytical headphones so they find them shocking. They're nothing like actual closed-backs for bassheads though. You mentioned getting some ATH-AD, I find X2 pretty similar to 700/900 but with way better bass and nicer treble while keeping the soundstage and clarity. I've got both 700 (discountinued model) and 900s and I haven't really used them for gaming after getting X2.

Getting three very different answers here
>>
What brands do you guys look to for decent cans. Right now I'm looking for something wireless and I've been looking at some sennheiser and audio technica stuff.
>>
>>58187493
Marshall Major II are pretty good apparently. Tough, good life, good range.
>>
>>58187479
Answer 1 and 3 are the same.
Your only option is a portable amp or a better cellphone. The portable amp choice is clunky and adds to your daily carry stuff and another thing to charge and keep track this. If you want to to this route go for a Fiio Q1. Perfect size to strap to your phone and comes with everything you need.
The other choice is to stop buying chinkshit and get a decent brand that can drive headphones well. Apple, Samsung and I think HTC phones have good audio chips on them. I know for sure my iPod Touch 6 can drive anything I've plugged into it to unsafe listening levels, including some 95 ohms 112 spl headphones.

>>
>>>>58187517
Would you place these above the sennheiser and audio technica brands in term of sound quality?
>>
>>58187578
At that price point - neither of the two have anything to bring to the table.
From Sennheiser anything less than a Momentum 2.0 Wireless will not be worth the money.
Audiotechnica on the other hand feels like plasticky crap.
>>
>>58187578
As far as I know the Marshall headphones line is made by some fashion headphones company that focuses on cheap shit for women. I haven't personally tried them, but I wouldn't bet on them lasting long.
If you want quality wireless your best bet is the Momentum 2 Wireless, but that shit will cost you an arm and a leg. There's also the Urbanite XL line which is cheaper.
>>
>>58187634
Same here - if i get anything wireless worth some money - i'd save for a momentum 2 wireless.
The Urbanite XL apparently have a touchy sensor for controls, it's too sensitive. And have weak clamping force, but depends on the size of the head though.

PS: Remembered about Meelectronics Matrix 2 - that's a nice entry into the bluetooth segment. Mine broke eventually - where the metal clips move go into the headphone band. Worth the money while they lasted. Tyl praised them :)
>>
I'm going to be using these mainly for pc gaming and pairing them with a blue yeti. Would it just be better to suck it up and go for some Astro a50s instead?

HD600s are half price on amazon but thomann has AKG K-712 Pro for 60% off

>>
>>58187720
An important fact people forget - you can use headsets from phones (with their mics in-line) using a simple Y cable - one goes into the mic hole, one into the headphone hole.
If you have a decent pair of those - use them instead, you can always buy something later
>>
>>58187755
HD600

The 712s are just too large. They really are, i owned a pair of Q 701s until recently and that always annoyed me a lot.
>>
>>58187760
I'm using corsair h1200s right now. Wouldn't say theyre too good for quality.
>>
>>58187803
"Gaming" headsets really are a piece of shit.
>>
>>58187818
That'd why I'm trying to move on to a better set of cans. Tired of not hearing things others can hear etc. I'm no incredibly knowledgeable on what makes a good set of headphones so it's hard. I might save for those momentum 2.0s though.
>>
>>58187784
I asked a friend who owns 600s at the same time that I posted, he said not to get 600's because I'm sacrificing bass extensions for accurate mids and that if i dont take size into account AKG's will be 100 times better
>>
>>58187389
Yeah, neutral-ish and such.

>>58187578
Treble quality on Momentum and M2 is not great, notch filter around 5 Khz or so.

>>58187784
HD600 would be friendlier to large heads if the headband had less clamp.
My head maxes out the slider on the 702, but still has room to spare on the HD 600.

>>58187754
From what I can piece together, output level is on the high side for most phones (~0.84 Vrms). Is not a great performer with low impedance headphones, more suited to high impedance gear.

A bit of a side statement: the people who know how and have the equipment to do audio measurements fairly well don't cover many cell phones.
The people who have the phones for review rarely take enough audio measurements, or take the wrong ones.
Seeko reviews a few models of phones with a dScope 3 analyzer. They're all Korean versions.
Anandtech's got an AP tester, but they haven't used it in their reviews.
>>
>>58187901
Your friend might have different priorities than you do.
I'd rather be able to sit comfortable and listen - being able to turn my head sideways. With the AKGs - nope, like wearing a cast on your neck ^^

I honestly have no idea; I grew up drowning in cables, and that's how I'll die. I imagine that bluetooth adapters can't be any worse signal/quality-wise than normal bluetooth headphones would be, though. I'm sure that someone else can chime in with an informed answer, though.
>>
>>58188153
Fair enough, though I'd be using these on pc so would the Bluetooth adapter still be the way to go? I might just get these anyways.

I won't use them for travel so the shp9500 being open headphones is not a detriment BUT I have heard the m40x are the best closed headphones for <$100, and because I can get both for the exact same price, therein lies the problem posed in my question. In short, I want the one that sounds the best between those two.

>inb4 you can't compare closed vs open
>>
>>58187916
>HD600 would be friendlier to large heads if the headband had less clamp.
Is the headband the same as on the HD650? Because I ever so slightly bent the metal parts on mine, you can lessen the clamp as much as you want.
>>
>>58188204

That's up to you. Unless you absolutely can't do the cable, it has a 1.5m cable that terminates in a 3.5mm jack on either end, so even if the normal cable is too short/long for you, you can literally just get a replacement of any length you desire from pretty much anywhere.
>>
>>58188090
An equalizer, a new 650, other headphones would be very different. Since no one seems to care about that suggestion:
Some people might suggest Audezes, the LCD-2 as an example, I don't think so. Open Audezes usually have a flat low and aren't limited in bass extension (usually). They really lack the 2-6kHz range compared to 650.
Then there's the Elear, more midbass than the Audezes. Serious treble dip.
Oppo PM2 might fall into a similar category, memory a little fuzzy

A bit of a different suggestion is the Mr Speakers Ether.

>>58188123
Some new brands, some older ones refreshed their product line (ER-4->4SR/4XR, the entire Hifiman product line), some new discount models, and attention refocused on neglected models.
Some are nice changes, more planar dynamics. As for a revolution? I don't think so.

>>58188246
Different material. It's loosened up over many years of wear and abuse, so the reverse has become a bit of an issue
>>
>>58188366
>ER-4->4SR/4XR
The XR looks really promising as I always loved the Ety sound and would bump up sub 200hz a bit. Will have to find the time to go audition.

>>
>>58185993
COP's stock pads are worse for comfort [better isolation tho], and theyre usually a bit more expensive

other than that COPs are just 770's with less highs.
>>
>>58186189

Stuck between Jaybird X3 and More1 Triple Driver. I can get X3 for 130$ (unless bestbuy still has on sale) and the More1 for 65$ at Costco sale online.

My main concern is sound. Apparently the More1 sound really good, crazy good. But the X3 are (I think) completely adjustable in every way, so shouldn't that mean they are potentially able to sound just as good if tweaked right? And I'd love the convenience of wireless but hate charging. However I bet they are higher quality than the More1 which is Chinese shit.
