It has been tried though. Look at the old model of Torrentshack. They had open signups, they were ratio free, and even allowed hit and runs. Retention was fucking terrible but it was great for getting new scene content and new uploads from BTN. It wouldn't have changed if it was a total success. They faced some minor legal heat along the way which is the real reason it became more closed. The private model allows sites to stay open longer. The more users they take on the more infrastructure they need, which requires more money. Well not every encode of every movie, not every 100% flac of country albums from 1983, etc is going to make it to the public trackers. It should be obvious why though. There is little public demand for that stuff and very little infrastructure to prop it up. Private trackers are superior when it comes to that. Soulseek also helps with that when it comes to music. Not always going to be 100% flacs but again, that's due to supply and demand.

WEB mp3 is a huge loophole for that. When I abused it I did so responsibly, only using a source stolen from p2p when I was absolutely sure what site it came from. My grp leader was aware of it and probably would have never allowed it if he didn't trust me. Other groups have been a lot more careless, using hundreds of releases taken from the same user on soulseek and attaching http://www.beatport.com regardless of what the encoder version was and since there's technically no rule against it that shit was never nuked. Everything comes from a streaming service now so there's not even a need to steal shit from public. If someone had PTH or APL they could make 320s from flacs and join a fucking scene group though. It's pretty lame.

It would work on super large swarms too like new release PC games for the first few days. Using these methods you're facing the same struggle as any other user on a home connection does at the start, you simply have an advantage over them because you are able to use your brain.

Now you can get anything you could get on topsites from trackers. Having sites with big archives is nice. Back when I was a leader of a group and had shit tons of sites it was the only way to reliably get access to movies and games. I was downloading lots of DVDRs and Xbox games. As private trackers and seedboxes took hold it was no longer really needed. Instead of leading a group I was buying WEB mp3 and releasing it, but for fun because I had everything I needed from private trackers. After that I was part of a group releasing Xbox 360 games and was on the best sites I was ever on but I didn't even care much about that. I just used it to leech games my group and others released.

Usually someone who provides content is given a leech slot. How many rips you put out per month depends on the kind of group you are. If a group that cracks big name PC games puts out only one or two releases they're fucking elite. If your mp3 group puts out two no name releases you're fucking nobody. But if your mp3 group's only release all month was an anticipated album two weeks early you're elite.

Nowadays you could just buy a subscription to a music service, say Google Play, for $10 a month and release everything you wanted to from it. Different groups focus on different genres, so you'd have to find one that puts out stuff you know something about and care about.
