Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Why is life in Italy so shit? Literally no one sells Thinkpads, and the ones that are around on bidding sites are extremely overpriced.

Don't let me get started on those overpriced B-Ware German Cuckpads floating around eBay. Holy shit I'm triggered. I just want a comfy x230 for Xmas. Fuck being Yuropoor.

can someone give me an idea what to expect from these unmarked batteries? ebay is full of them, but they all claim to be certified so it should be safe, right?

i don't want a housefire
>>
Is the screen in the x230 good or should I replace it with something else?
>>
Hey guys.

My current laptop got fubared and I'm looking for a new one.

My needs are:
•~8 hour battery life (can include slice/ultrabay batterys and such)
•Can run Photoshop well with 2~3 open images of around 5mb's each
•Will last a minimum of 4 years with light maintenance (no total event collapse)
•Can maybe run Counterstrike on low acceptably without getting about 70°c.

I've had a whip around and I've considering either a 440p/s/standard.
What would be the best for my needs?
Would a 440p last long enough, would a 440s be quick enough?

Sorry for all the questions, I'd like to be well informed. Thanks guys. Ily

x420 vs x220
Any majour differences between the two?

I'm in Australia and we get jewed hard here.

I bought a t430 for myself for christmas and ended up getting 8gb ram, high res screen and 180gb SSD for $300 AUD (~200 euro)

Get one with a 6 month or 3 year warranty.

Free battery replacement after housefire

I tend to buy batteries from sellers who only sell batteries.

>>58136292
What is your budget?
I would shoot for a T450s, better gfx & no clickpad.

>>58136537
There is no X420
Are you saying T420?
T420 has better cooling & the option to install a higher pixel density display. Plus you can upgrade to quadcore without much of a hassle#

X220 is the 12" version of a T420, no dGPU option and removed the DVD drive unless you get the ultrabase with it. Both typically have the same processors & ports.
>>
>>58136832
Yes I meant the t420
I plan on getting the x220 for casual shit such as coding netflix/youtube and studying material.
>>
My dad wants a Chromebook for business to replace his shitty Vios

Is there a Thinkpad I should get instead for under 200? What are pros/cons between the two?
>>
>>58136935
Sound choice.
You can always eGPU the bastard as well

>>58136954
He probably wants battery life & something light, which no ThinkPad under $200 can offer that.
In general, ThinkPad are built to last & easy serviceability. There are some ThinkPads that are Chromebooks too. I had used a Yoga 11e with windows 8 and it was a pleasant experience.

He just has to know, M$ office & some printers will not work with a chromebook
>>
Should I use xfce on my x220? What distro?
>>
>>58137013
Oh, one other thing, average battery life on the x220? I plan on getting an extended 9 cell so I'll have two around. Dunno if the ones on amazon are any good either, can you link one?
>>
>>58137129
Doesn't really matter. Use whichever distro or De you want. You seem new, so I recommend Manjaro and the DE that looks the most nice.
>>
Looking at a few T520's.

One with i5-2520M, 4GB RAM, 320gb HDD with 12 months of "warranty" for ~250€.
Another one, same stuff but 250gb HDD and I'd either have to fuck with stickers or replace the keyboard, 200€, 3 months of "warranty".
The last one is pretty much the same as the first one but with 3 months of "warranty", 180€.
I was going to ask which one should I roll with but I think I answered myself when I found that third one.

Or maybe I should keep looking for better deals? I mean, all I'm going to do on this thing is some backend webdev and watching movies/videos.

I plan on getting AUO B156HW01 V4 and a new a battery+additional 4GB RAM anyway, probably even an SSD later down the line.

While at it, any chink battery recommendations?

how can I tell which of the screen options a Thinkpad has when I don't know the machine type to be looked up at http://tp.krelay.de/ ?
(no type sticker left on the machine || too much hassle to ask the seller etc)

in particular, I mean a T400, which has a 1440x900 screen. there are CCFL and LED backlight options for that resolution.
it has a P8400, in case there could be any correlation, but I guess there isn't much, since I've seen P8600 1280x768 T400's.

because cheap, and still perfectly daily driveable for my needs. can't find anything newer as cheap here. and I do like 16:10 screens ∨ screens which are at least 900px vertical. yeah, T410's have 900x1440, too, but as I said are not as cheap.

So ive found a great way to clean up the scratched surfaces of "coated" metal thinkpads like my X41t
The stuff that coats it is a scuff magnet, regular alcohol obviously wont cut it because the scuffs are physical imperfections

I used it on my 380ED and it worked great but its even better on my x41t

>70% alcohol 30% acetone mix
Got it for a dollar at walgreens

Its stong enough that with a scrubby sponge it wears down the surface of the coating, but not so strong its acting as straight up paint thinner
Ive thought about bathing the bottom of this tablet in 100% acetone to have smooth metal to buff out, but not the top

Anybody in the US want a T430? $130 free shipping

It needs a new battery desperately, the palmrest has a small dent on the left side, it only has a single 4gb ram stick

It runs and has 1600x900. I bought it from a refurber for $220 and I feel like he did a shitty job, so I'm cutting my loses and letting it go for cheap

the fucker didn't even repaste the cpu, and when I first received it the fans would whir like crazy until I got around to doing it.

I also have an OEM T420/T430 FHD ribbon cable from Lenovo with sealing on it, and an extra T430 palmrest to fix the dent I will include for $145 free shipping, I'll post that picture next

Don't. Pic related, my i7 X220 throttling. Repasted three times, each with varying levels of paste from lots to literally nothing, but temperatures all nearly the same.
Compared to the T420 (which also has a 35W TDP) the heat pipes are minuscule, and the fan load, whiny, and inadequately tiny for its given duty. It simply cannot dissipate enough heat in enough time, and makes anything CPU intensive utterly useless.

What are the limitations to these Expresscard to USB 3.0 adapters?
Do they provide enough power to an external HDD? (It works with a single native USB 3.0 port.) I understand these are slower than the native 3.0 ports due to the speed cap of the Expresscard slot. But they are faster than the USB 2.0 speeds, right?
>>

I'm in the process of calibrating an new battery for my T430 and I'm trying my hardest to avoid any gameplay on it. It's pretty annoying though to hibernate and remove battery so that I can play on ac power just for some games.

Is there a driver or software that'll let me use ac power only without removing the battery?
>>
I know I'll get a biased opinion here, but whatever.
Should I refurb my asus laptop (buying new battery, power brick, an ssd and probably get some ram), ou buy an x230/t430? refurb would be around 130€-150€, and the thinkpad would be around 300€. Also afraid that the x230 is too small to work on with no external monitor?
>>

you're just accustomed to the old keyboard

ThinkPads are not really suited for games, are they?
>>
>>58171029
What are the specs on your current laptop?
>>
>>58171029
thinkpad, as it will give you years of use with swappable batteries

its like this - is the asus laptop nice? I assume so, but when it comes time to do maintenance like you're describing, its going to be a pain in the ass

not so with the thinkpad

Do modern models have NumPads? Or are modern models all shit?
I hate keyboards without NumPads, as I actually use them for both typing and playing Crawl.

Got a thinkpad x220 for Christmas this year, I've been trying to install Linux on it for the past few hours and I've had nothing but trouble.
Is this a common issue or am I just having bad luck? Sometimes it's a bad USB install, other times it's a missing install .iso, I have no idea if this is luck or not.

>>58171274
i5-2450(or somewhere around that), gt540m (that i have no use for), 4gb of ram and a spinny.

it's served me well, with that maintenence done it'd last for a while as a computer engineering student, but at 2.6kg id like something lighter to take to college
>>
I'm semi tech illiterate. My t420 only has a 160gb ssd. I'm down to 96gb available after a couple months use. I need to run a couple more application in the near future that are sorta fat. I don't want to replace this ssd with a bigger one only because I'm usuing the programs for just a couple months. If I buy an external ssd can it be used almost as if it were just a folder? I'll be keeping pictures, audio, and video in one and interacting with them through the programs.
>>
Yay or nay? I need something for college and got f-all money

i know its not a proper thinkpad

Maybe it has something to do with the UEFI/BIOS compatibility setting in the BIOS? I know that has caused me a bit of trouble in the past with Linux distros that weren't compatible with UEFI.
>>
>>58171584
Honestly the performance difference between that and a X230 is going to be so minor that it doesn't seem like it would be worth a $300 sidegrade. Either upgrade your current machine or just save up some money for an ultrabook if you really want to switch to something lighter.

you are fucking full of shit, i just bought a genuine lenovo battery for my x230 and i get 10 hours screen on time minimum. Enjoy your inferior chink capacity.
>>
>>58173673
About an hour and a half
No smart battery tech but timing it from 100% to shutdown while in a file transfer loop gave me an hour
So 1:30 is an estimate

Its 8 pounds with the battery in it
My g40 would be a better weapon, heavy and has a steel frame
>>
>>58173691
I said I bought a genuine one you fuck. The battery life was still excellent but the cell had something like 90% of its original capacity when I received it. presumably because it was stored improperly.

I know a lot of the third party batteries are shit (I've been considering just manually replacing cells myself for older laptops due to how terrible most replacement batteries I've purchased have been) but finding an original OEM battery that has its full capacity for a laptop that was released 5+ years ago is a massive pain.

Hey guys looking to buy my first upgrade for the x220, i've read that an SSD will provide the best performance boost so i'll probably get that.

However, it seems that people are recommending both an mSATA and normal SSD, assuming i'm only going to get one for now, which would be optimal?

If I do end up getting both how should my file distribution be? Just the OS + programs on one side and content on the other or what?

Also currently the light on the mute volume + mic buttons don't work, but they do function. Any ideas on how to fix this? I upgraded to Windows 10 and that's when they stopped working
>>
>>58174800
afaik the only difference is that mini docks do not have a extra bay for hdds and such
>>
>>58174588
Better yet buy one with no ram and no HDD.

Ram and ssds are dirt cheap.

>>58174868
I'd go msata because that way you can go msata SSD + a big capacity HDD.

Yes, OS + application on SSD and everything else on the HDD.

>windows 10
Why would you downgrade to that piece of shit.
>>
>>58174900
ah, okay, thank you
>>
>>58174905
Ok that being said is there any difference between 120 vs 250 gig speeds for the Samsung 850 EVO? I doubt i'll reach full capacity on 120gb but if 250 is somehow faster/more reliable then i'll get that because the price difference isn't all that much.
>>
>>58174999
The x220 and t420 msata slot is sata2 so you'll be capped at 300mb/s or so anyway, pick whatever.

That being said sata2 speeds aren't an issue because you'll never notice the difference between sata2 and sata3 speeds in daily usage unless you transfer large files between sata3 ssds regularly.
>>
>>58175035
Cheers mate, guess i'll go for the 120 gig to save on some money then.

Why is my T440s so fucking slow since Windows 10?
I takes 2 minutes to even be able to use Chrome after logon.
It's an i3 with 8GB RAM for fuck's sake, and it's perfectly fine on my i5 desktop.
Is it the lack of SSD?

3G/HSPA, capped at 14.4Mb/s

Guys I'm kinda considering replacing my desktop with a laptop as I never game anymore and this beast is consuming too much (FX 6300 + GTX 580). I need something to last me A LOT of years but I wanna buy used. Is x220/t420 still the go-to? I also need a kinda high resolution because I play poker and I need to be able to tile a few tables. I buying a shit t420 and upgrading ssd/1080p IPS the way to go? I thought of buying piece by piece and building it myself (mobo, proc, case etc) but it seems to me it will turn out to be more expensive. Are there better HP Elitebook/Dell Latitudes out there for the same money? I'm guessing it doesn't get better than Sandy Bridge when it comes to value/cpu performance.

>>58176967
>What's wrong with it? Is it super hard?
No but the 1080p IPS mod for the t420 is nowhere to be seen and might have flickering issues, it's available for the t420s though but that model has worse battery and soldered CPU.
>>
>>58177043
>has worse battery and soldered CPU.
Doesn't it accept 9 cell batteries?
What about 6 cell?
Does it overheat with let's say a i5 2520?
I don't really care if it has soldered CPU. A dual core/hyperthreaded i5/i7 is the best you can do anyways, 4 cores throttle in this bitch.
>>
>>58177065
The only way a 2520m could overheat with the t420 platform would be if the fan is clogged with shit, dust or both.
>A dual core/hyperthreaded i5/i7 is the best you can do anyways, 4 cores throttle in this bitch.
False, it depends on which quad core you install.

How hot does it get during Prime95?
>>
>>58177114
Dunno but with the cpu-z stress test I reach up to 93c with all cores at 100%, 12c away from the max temp so it's fine by me. There's also a video of a guy in YouTube showing temps of a 2670qm t420, it's way lower than mine though.

If you want IPS either get an x220/x230 or the slim Ts while the mod for them is on sale right now.
