IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

You're gonna need to buy a battery + slice from lenovo though, you CAN modify the bios to run third party batteries but I think the lenovo batteries are better anyway.

I love my ThinkPad x220. Really think it's wonderful. But if only I could travel forward in time to 2026 so I could get a rereleased x220 which looks and feels the same but has graphical processing power in the CPU's integrated graphics chip on par with the high-end graphics cards of today. tell me about performance, especially when using the internal screen

my w520 needs a boost and finding a quadcore+2000m motherboard is too hard, plus i don't think it would help much anyway

i don't have an external monitor to use or anywhere to put one so i'm particularly interested in the performance drop when using the internal screen, is it a straight decrease in framerate or is it something shittier like microstutter?

please advise

>i'm particularly interested in the performance drop when using the internal screen, is it a straight decrease in framerate or is it something shittier like microstutter?
It depends on the game. Some games load most of the data to the vram in advance, in which case the hit is minimal. Other games try to stream as you play. The latter type is rare, but pretty much unplayable. I think Dishonored is the best-known example of that.

It's worth mentioning that this was a Japan (or at least Asia) exclusive model and you will never EVER find one anywhere else. X201s was the last time the West got a slim X series, but it's not that much thinner if any thinner at all than the X220.
>>
Can anyone explain how to change the core speed on the w520? When plugged in it goes for max performance and gets pretty hot. When unplugged it's cooler but noticeably slower. Using cpuz it shows ~3.4 MHz when on the charger and when unplugged it's ~.9 MHz.

I don't really know anything about the significance of these numbers other then bigger number = faster, but want to able to set it an "average" speed for normal performance. I've explored the BIOS and could only find that I can either set it at max performance or battery saver.

The cpu is a i7 2860 qm and the gpu is a quadro 2000m

Also on a side note how do I make it so that the laptop sleeps when the screen is closed?

around a year ago i bought a t420 from ebay. the battery charged up until 68%. I found this acceptable and didnt bother much.

Now, I bought another T420. For some reason I used the power adapter that came with it to charge my "old" thinkpad. Somehow, it charged it up to 83%.
Though, both power adapters show different modell numbers, they have the same power output.

Anybody has a clue what the reason might be?

aside from the trivial fact that it's one generation ahead, afaik the 520m has noticeably higher benchmarks, and I can't find a single advanced feature on ark.intel which the P8600 possesses and the 520m does not.

>>58103184
scratches are not something that you can clean off. you can either be more careful with your next thinkpad, i.e. always tuck it in a sleeve or a dedicated padded laptop bag, or just accept it being a tool, not a jewelry piece, and hence signs of wear being nothing to be ashamed of.

Bought an L420 second hand a couple of weeks ago. Dropped some extra RAM into it and a larger hard drive.
Current specs: Core i5-2520M / 12 GB RAM / 1 TB HDD.

Some thoughts:
a.) Did not realize until after purchase that the L420 is Legacy BIOS only, no UEFI.
b.) Did not realize until after purchase that the BIOS implements whitelisting for mini-PCI wifi cards.

Solved problem A by using Clover EFI bootloader to emulate EFI in software.
Solved problem B by flashing a modded BIOS.

Now multibooting Linux Mint 18, Windows 8.1 Pro and macOS Sierra 10.12.2, all installed in UEFI mode.

Problems aside, bretty gud laptop.

>>
>>58111898
I don't think you're going to get between the CPU and the heatsink without doing damage. Dust removal is always good, just blast it with an air compressor.
As for the machine turning off suddenly without warning, I'd bet that the power supply is shot.
I've never tried fixing a power supply on a laptop though, so I'd probably recommend you take it to an actual electrician for that.
>>
>>58098266
If you have an SSD and don't care about the new (ugly to me) design go straight with 7, identical functionality, way less problems, more consistency through all the system and it doesn't just fuck up itself for no reason (the win32 integration and overall the new explorer are just unstable on 10 and that shouldn't happen).
If you don't have an ssd buy the cheaper one, the i5/hd4000 on the x230 are just so good I can't imagine them with an HDD, the cooling system is well made for the size
>>
>>58098266

>>58112185
I'd recommend 8.1 Pro instead of either 7 or 10.
Faster than 7, supports Metro apps just in case you want them, but you still retain the option of disabling updates and maintaining a stable system, without the spyware unlike 10.
Although you will probably want to install ClassicShell for a proper Start Menu.

You broke what, the cable somewhere on it's way from power brick to plug or the plug itself? In case the latter, maybe that's just me but the thing is proprietary and I doubt you'd manage to niggerrig any other plug that would fit.
On the bright side, it's not model-specific or even thinkpad family-specific, it's just the "Lenovo 20V round plug", picrelated, a grey one like this. Any 65W Lenovo brick with such plug will do, no matter if it's the newer one with round corners like picrelated or the blocky one like X200's stock. A 90W one wont hurt either, but they're heavier to carry.
Avoid older IBM ones, which have black plugs, those are 19V (or something) and wont fit.
Preferably avoid chink ones, /tpg/ says these can set your house on fire.

Its kinda boils down to preferences.

The X laptops get hot on the keyboard but the T's get hot on the back and side if that matters. Personally im not a huge fan of any of them, and the only one I used for non work related things was the 420/430

only on HDDs and only at startup, with a cheap SSD and with normal usage for a laptop (daily use with quick programs opening and standby when not used) 7 is as fast if not faster.

7 is the one that under normal usage gives more confidence with its stability and simple interface, prove me wrong

just for the keyboard and the price is a bit lower.

in fact i have a x230 and i'm super happy with it, the keyboard is good enough for me (i got 95wpm on the first test i tried and i went over 100 once with an EN keyboard in IT mode) and the 3rd generation CPUs are worth their price, USB3, more efficient and far better iGPU. go for the t430 or x230 unless you're super interested in the keyboard.
also unless you need a big screen cause it will be your main workstation go for the X series, i got used to the 12.5 screen instantly coming from a 15.6 one and it's comfy as fuck, it's basically as portable as a tablet

I need a lot of help, my friend gave me his t400 for free but was in a bad mood and fucked off, god I can barely type, there is so much hair under the keyboard, help me /tpg/

Is there an easy way to get under the keyboard, I got a gas can but I'm assuming I cant remove the keys without the high likeliness of breaking the scissor switches [I think] underneath.

Sorry about my typing I'm in hell right now

I dont think compressed hair will be enough it's really in there.
>>
>>58116575
Let's go step by step here, is this your t400 or someone elses?

The keyboard can be cleaned but whatever you do don't wash it, there's alcohol sprays and you can use a rag to clean it, anymore than that buy a new keyboard.

are you fixing for your friend? call him tell him to pick his shit up and fuck off because there's no need to keep people who treat you that way in your life, cut him off.
>>
>>58116611
OK I switched to my phone, he gave it to me, he's a weird dude.

The surface of the keyboard has been cleaned, it's underneath that's the problem.

I tried taking a picture but my phones camera is too amazing I guess, file size too big.

I know scissors switches are weak as hell and if I try to pry the keys off I risk breaking them, so I was hoping for a better way to clean it?

He didn't give me his keyring login pw, and won't tell me cause apparently it's his generic for everything pw.

Still not sure if I'll need it to reset

>>58124374
No, you are fine. Because the fan will just kick in or the CPU will throttle if it gets too hot.
Nothing wrong with keeping it cooler/hotter, as its mainly just 10 degrees difference overall.

You will be fine, I am presuming you are running windows. Unless it is extremely hot, like hot to touch. I wouldn't worry about it, because the fan will always kick in when needed.

Just redo the thermal paste, T530 has a big heatsink, so I would presume heat will dissapate better than my T430s.

egpu for anything before sandy bridge is kind of a crapshoot. the only advice i can give is get that exp gdc instead of a more expensive pe4c and a really cheap nvidia gpu. that way, you haven't sunk much into a project that might not work out.

if the first shitty gpu works, try a 750ti afterwards. very likely optimus won't work with the onboard intel gfx so you'll need to use an external screen.
>>
>>58124898
There's basically two bottlenecks instead of one.

First bottleneck is the PCI-E 1x bus, so no point in wasting money on a fast card that'll only be as fast as it should be in a 1/3 of the circumstances.

Second bottleneck is that there's no point in getting a fast graphics card because your CPU is old and you'll be bottlenecking that 80% of the time anyway.

Conclusion: Don't waste money on a fast card, i.e. 1050 or slower. I would say do something fun like a passively cooled card, and there's further bottlenecking if you don't use an external display from the card, so keep that in mind.

Look who it is again, xsauc.. I'm fed up with your shit faggot. The other day when you called me a newfag, yeah, haven't forgotten about that yet. Fuck you I've been on here for months and probably get on here more than you anyways. Don't you know that you make yourself look like a newfag when you call others newfag? Just because you learned how to hack your name and change it to "xsauc" does not give you the right to disrespect anyone at any time.

Is it possible to replace the shitty T560 768p screen with a 1080p screen?
>>
I recently bought a T420 on ebay (4236B28)
came with a french keyboard and no fingerprint scanner. Is it possible to upgrade the shell and trackpad for fingerprint support? Which part nrs. would I need?

Same for keyboard I want to change to US layout bought FRU 45N2141 to replace 45N2152(french) but it doesn't fit it's a couple mm too long even tho lenovo's keyboard service parts says they should be compatible (they're even both in the middle collum if that matters)

Do I need a different keyboard for the version with fingerprint too?
>>
>>58128415
Just search eBay for the parts you need. You're looking for a palm rest with fingerprint scanner, keyboard, and the fingerprint scanner itself if the palm rest you buy doesn't have one.

It's all interchangeable.

While you're in there, pull your CPU heatsink and reapply thermal paste and clean the fan. If you don't have Bluetooth or the Ultimate N wifi card, now would be the perfect time to install them.
>>
>>58117631
I believe that is the wifi antenna
>>
>>58127564
So your moms house?
>>
>>58128847
whats ultimate N wifi card? The stock wifi card in my t420 is abysmal
>>
>>58128847
I already installed a cracked bios so that it supports intel 7260ac wifi, 16GB ram and soon I'll get my 2760qm(going to clean the entire thing up with compressed air and some ic diamond 7 I still gave around here somewhere) and hd+ cable for matte IPS 1600x900 screen upgrade. Along with 9000mAh 100wH battery and Samsung 850Pro 256GB ssd and ultrababy hotswap hdd bay adapter.

I'm pretty sure the only thing left to upgrade is the fingerprint scanner.

So far all works fine no issues just the keyboard I ordered won't fit, I'm not sure if the keyboard fru is dependant on the palm rest that's all.

of course
if you don't find it viable, just throw in few upgrades

never had my thinkpad go past 30-40C on that sort of content, not even after hours of videos
no usb3 can be a pain, I admit, but I don't use it that much
1366x768 is shit, but it isn't as painful as it is on t-series, pixels are already fairly dense. panel is replaceable
don't know where this one came from, the placement is fine. hell, I've even used laptops with ethernet on the back, so compared to that, it isn't bad at all

You need to swap this for something else if you want to hackintosh without using USB wifi.
But to swap the card you'll need to flash a modded BIOS because Lenovo are assholes that put a whitelist on the mini PCI Wi-Fi cards.

Hey guys.

My current laptop got fubared and I'm looking for a new one.

My needs are:
•~8 hour battery life (can include slice/ultrabay batterys and such)
•Can run Photoshop well with 2~3 open images of around 5mb's each
•Will last a minimum of 4 years with light maintenance (no total event collapse)
•Can maybe run Counterstrike on low acceptably without getting about 70°c.

I've had a whip around and I've considering either a 440p/s/standard.
What would be the best for my needs?
Would a 440p last long enough, would a 440s be quick enough?

Sorry for all the questions, I'd like to be well informed. Thanks guys. Ily
