It's a Unix-based OS, which lets you to use all the proprietary and unkosher software you need without having to deal with Windows. Hackintoshing allows you to have a cheaper/more powerful PC with macOS than the ones Apple is selling.
You gotta try an OS to judge for yourself, I don't know where to start and what would be advantageous for you.

I triple-boot Linux Mint 18, Windows 8.1 Pro and macOS Sierra 10.12.2 on both my desktop and laptop.
I took the path of least resistance with the desktop, and installed each OS to a physically seperate drive, but installed all 3 simultaneously to the same drive for the laptop.
So yes, it can be done.

Ok, so TLDR: got rMBP late 2015 when I joined the company. i5/16GB ram/256 GB ssd.
I hate OSX guts. Question is:
- can I remove ALL animations? (windows resize/minimize/maximize/workspace switch/cmd+tab/alt+tab)
- can I fix the retardness of cmd+tab? Eg. having chrome app open and chrome, cmd+tab to chrome app and chrome window opens (???). Same shit happens with multiple APP instances (eg. editors). I just want what I know from windows/linux. CMD+TAB should bring me a list of all apps running and allow me to focus on them separately
- this macbook doesn't have a dedicated GPU still it overheats as fuck. At the same time top battery life I get on it is 4hrs. I have to run VM in the background but man, what the fuck can I do for it not to overheat and throttle? Underlock? Some tweaks I am unaware of?

You can disable a lot of them via some terminal prompts. Just google it as if you were actually trying.

I think I know what your problem is, but I don't see an easy way out of it. Personally, I use expose or whatever it's called (mission control I think?) more often to switch windows when I want to have a particular one. But overall your problem is that you expect whatever you are using too much to work like something else. Adapt how you manage your windows and spaces and you'll see that you can have a nice workflow going in OS X.

Never had mine overheating. It's hot, no question, but it never throttles.

I bought it for $650 refurb in March.

So I'd say like $350-425 used. If you're buying it off the street then low ball them. I'd check pawn shops too.
You can go pretty low

Also: you won't regret the MBA its the best 11 inch period for the price. It's always smooth for me, I've used it to perform in Ableton and it's my daily driver for portable work which involves word processing, PDF editing with many images in Acrobat which is already a huge resource hog and I literally have the SSD full to the brim on the regular with no noticeable slowdown at all.
