I always liked the concept of private trackers and used to make a habit of seeding until I had a ratio of at least 2.0, but I never really went down the rabbit hole, in no small part because all the stuff I wanted I could find on the free and open trackers.

I got on Demonoid and TVTorrents (or something, it's been years) when it was still a think. They were pretty cool but I didn't lose any sleep when they went under.

A bit of both. For one, the selection is usually better (you can pick whether you want to listen to a vinyl rip of an album or the original CD, etc.). And the quality is ofc better as well. If you have some decent headphones, listening to Youtube vs. an actual mp3 is pretty noticeable in terms of quality.

But if soundcloud and YouTube work for you (Spotify is pretty great too for what it offers people who aren't nearly as big into music), then no real reason to switch unless you want to go down that rabbit hole. It's mostly a hobby, like a lot of things for people.

Honestly, you're going to have a difficult time getting into private trackers right now. Ever since what.cd shutdown, the route to most trackers is much more difficult. What.cd used to run pretty comprehensive interviews for people who weren't already part of any private tracker, and once you made PU there, you basically had access to most of the large private trackers.

The way it worked on the Silk Road and other sites like it is you just had to do "early release" of your funds and risk getting ripped off -- and actually get ripped off -- a few times before you get the real deal from a solid vendor. Then you just stick with them until they go under. By then, you have enough transactions on your belt to merit not having to do early releases anymore and you were culturally allowed to use their escrow system.

This approach where you vet people in some capacity, and use access to one site as a prerequisite credential for another is, well, a bit alien to me.
