Fellas

I am a bit of a watch guy, I have a small Seiko 5 collection, a nice Tisell flieger, a Speedy and a GMT Master II.

My employer has noticed I enjoy watches and has decided to gift me an Apple Watch for Christmas.

I really have no desire to own or wear a smart watch, however, I don't want to seem like an unappreciative dick. To be honest, I would have no problem regifting this to someone who would really love, appreciate and enjoy the Apple Watch. In fact, it would make me happy seeing someone enjoy it and get the best possible use out of it. However, if I regift it my employer will notice I never wear it at work.

What to do with this dilemma bros?
>>
>>57988756
Start a passive aggressive gifting war of course, find something he loves and then buy a shitty version of that for him.

Or you know just wear the fucking thing for a couple of months and then accidentally break it.
>>
>>57988756
Use it for work. Be pragmatic, let it be one of your main watches in rotation as long as you work there. Be appreciative, with friends you can take the risk and be awkward, but when it comes to work and money then be pragmatic and just eat the frog.

One good thing about it and a little psychological quirk is that people who give YOU gifts are more likely to do you favors in the future as well. I know there has been experiments that have shown this, I have no idea why. But I assume that when people give something or do someone a favor then they see themselves as someone who do favors to that person. Even when it's a small little thing they might think "I must like that guy since I gave him stuff or did this favor" even if it's a perfect stranger. So making it a watch in your regular rotation especially to meetings and so on is a good thing.

Don't break it like this guy >>57988791 says. Your boss wanted to give you a nice watch, it is difficult to buy something to a connoisseur like yourself.

Your boss don't have refined taste of a watch feinschmecker so that he could get you a decently priced, but excellent watch. So he just got an expensive one that he have heard about. Appreciate the gesture, it's polite and who knows, the watch might have some fun functionality that you like.

I would not get it myself, I would also not run windows on my machine. But work is work and business is business. They don't pay you money because it's easy.

>>57975032

As far as I know it's a refurbished 4205, the seller put a domed crystal on it and I think the movement is the original movement but it feels like it was serviced or just lubed a but. For $55 shipped from the Philippines it was worth it. Sometimes it seems like it runs a tiny tiny bit fast but it's about as accurate as any of the other watches pictured.

Better solution than the SKX013 so long as it keeps running

>tell the guy the standard stuff, that we have a 10-15€ inspection fee (so we don't open watches for free) and we'll phone with a quotation of the service fee

That's at least 200-300€ that we're not making because of some normie tantrum.

Honestly, do independents actually repair Speedmasters at a fixed price in the West? I don't think so.
>>

>Honestly, do independents actually repair Speedmasters at a fixed price in the West? I don't think so.

You should give a fixed price that is about the same as the price of a new watch if they say it's too complicated and then say it is because it's too risky to say without looking inside the watch and that it will be much cheaper if you can see inside the watch first.

Sometimes they just agree to the price. Many people don't care about prices. For example, it's not unusual that saudi royals send their servants to just buy everything in a store so that they can pick out what they want at home and give the rest to charity or whatever just because it's more convenient. Lots of people will pay any kind of money just to not be inconvenienced. "Oh, you don't want the complicated cheap service, sir? Very good ,sir. I can give you a fixed price of half a million dollars for anything that might be the matter, sir"
>>
>>57994846
>>57994939

This, only... Just mention that it will likely be 200-400€ if you can assess what is wrong. The fixed price is just for the extra risk you take for saying you are fixing something without looking at it.

Sometimes they don't care and just agree to the half a million or whatever.
>>
>>57994939
>>57995010
What I don't get if these people are so #triggered by minor complications and basic math then why do they buy a Speedmaster?
>>
>>57995018
Because they want one and like it. It's not like they are triggered about basic math, but if every salesmen did all sort of formalities to save you one cent then that would be irritating. You don't care about a measly cent. But a cent for you is $100,000 for them. They don't care about measly shit like that.
>>
>>57995075
the speedmaster is not exclusively a toy for the ultra rich. it is attainable by just about anyone above the poverty line.

I have a grandfather who isn't even particularly well off and he can't be bothered with worrying about a few dollars on a repair either.

But he says "Just do it and tell me what to pay" and if they fuck him over with expensive options or hidden fees he finds another place to do business later

I don't have a vernier gauge near me right now, but the Ebay listing says it's 44mm, which is pretty acceptable for this much of a tool watch. Plus the dive bezel, black coating and small lugs help a lot, it doesn't look that much bigger than my Ministry Amphibia, though a bit chunkier thanks to flat mineral vs. domed acrylic.

And the dial also comes in Type A and Type B flieger versions.

the only luxury brands non-enthusiasts know are rolex, omega and tag, usually in that order of popularity.
when you first learn about watches, you very quickly dismiss rolex because of the brand image (too well known, associated with "rich people" which is a bad thing).
so the first luxury watch purchase of someone who has disposable income but not autism-level of time to invest in the hobby will very often be a tag or an omega.

so I googled the brand and that's what came up. I guess it might be an accomplishment to cram a miyota 9015 into a 9.8mm thick case but I'm fairly certain I've seen automatic mens watches at 34mm and smaller

Well yeah. Rolex datejust at 36mm is one of the most obvious examples. Rolex OP and airking at 34mm have existed for forever too.

Opinion on Skagen? I want a slim watch. It's alright if it's quartz. Are they really slim or they just get away with it with a bigger face?

It's so incredibly cringe seeing screenshots of guys with scrawny or fat arms wearing ridiculous wrist fedoras complete with diver or tachymeter dials when everyone knows damned well the owner couldn't do 3 good pushups if their lives depended on it.

It's just another one of those overpriced fashion watches. $2 movement, sold for $200 or however much it is.
>>
>>58006417
I'm in bad shape and I use diver bezels and chronographs for making food

chronos also for tea and coffee

lol @ u for thinking they're not useful

now tachymeters, I really doubt anyone uses those for anything
>>
>>58006503
To be fair, a lot of mechanical watches are like that too.
>>
>>58006527
They probably also come from the same fashion brands.
>>
>>58006538
And then you get the luxury brands that are just inaccessible/overpriced in their own way. What's a good value brand for you?
>>
>>58006503
> $2 movement
is this actually ever true? they tend to use reputable brands like miyota and others whose names I can't remember

sure the movements aren't $100 but not $2 either

anyway the logical conclusion of thinking like that: only ever buy cheapest casio or vintage if you want quartz, and that is sort of lame
someone wants quartz and a certain design? it is probably more worthy for them to pay $150 for the ideal than stick with something different just 'cause of

I have a Skagen very similar to that one. I picked it up for well under $100 at Costco, and it's a very decent daily wear watch. It's very slim, and comfortable. I've heard shit about quality, but I've had it for over a year, and the mineral crystal and titanium case are scratch free, and it keeps time as well as my other more expensive watches. Full retail is a bit much, but if you can find one at a good price, it makes for a decent timepiece.

It honestly hasn't been too unpleasant so far. It's gained ~half a minute from when I got it so all I need to do is take it back a minute a month.

Only real issue is the poor viewing angles. Might buy a genuine one soon though.

China doesn't do QC. This is a general truth.

The shit they make might sound/look good in theory and specs, but it's almost 100% certain that some part of the Chinese product is going to fail prematurely.

Considering that a mechanical watch contains many little parts that require a lot of precision, you can be sure that your watch is going to be trash very quickly.

I've got a couple of fake watches, but I was hoping you could tell me just how fake they look. I'm thinking of wearing them to work and saving my "f91w" for weekends and casual Friday.

I bought these about 4-5 years ago, please don't judge me as I've changed a lot since then.

This isn't for 100% accurate timekeeping, but more an accessory to go with my suit until I buy a nice citizen or seiko, or another brand watch.

Thanks again for all the watch advice you've given me so far.

Pretty sure it does. Going to give it a good 2 day accuracy test before opening it up.

And it's a pretty one. Especially with the brand new domed acrylic crystal. The coffin link~ish bracelet can like fit up to an 8 inch wrist.

Hell it's a first for me when had to remove a link on a vintage JDM watch's bracelet.

My only grief is that is that despite it being a singed LM bracelet and being 18mm wide, the lug width is 16mm. So that kind limits my strap potential. Might notch down a 18mm strap to a 16mm to make it fit well.

Also, managed to nab a BNIB black Turtle for 215$ shipped.

I did own an Omega Speedmaster but not a single person ever complimented me on it so I sold it, but I do love the look of it, but in general Im not interested in watches anymore so strongly, but an mechanical affordable chrono is a fun watch. Still have my submariner to make you poorfags jealous though and since it was passed down to me I dont dare to sell it.

Part of the reason I sold it was also that the finishing and the general quality of the watch was bad for a 3000$ piece... Very disappointed in that looking back at it.

Omega is the incarnate definition of a mid range shitter.

An Aqua Terra literally has worse case/dial/hands/bracelet finishing than a Seiko Brightz.

And no, I'm not kidding, I own an SDGM and have examined an AT up close in person. The AT's build quality is shocking for its pricetag, as it is intended to be sold entirely based on marketing to people who won't know the difference.

The only watches worth a damn above $1000 and below Rolex are Grand Seiko, Nomos, Sinn, Damasko, and Tudor.

Omega was once a great watchmaker, pre-Swatch, now they are just a massively overpriced and over marketed pleb-catcher brand.

Pic related is from when Omega was still great.
