Here's my watch. It's a limited edition Gant watch or something.

I've been thinking about buying a "Daniel Wellington" with black and copper colours, sort of like a Deus Ex:a Human Revolution theme :)

>I've been thinking about buying a "Daniel Wellington" with black and copper colours

Just get a fake chinese Daniel Wellington. The movement will be much the same and it's pretty much impossible to see the difference unless you have a real one to compare slight differences.

Look at picture related, which one is fake? You might see it because one looks slightly cheaper made, but they both function similarly.
>>
>>57961600
It's not a very water resistant watch...
>>
>>57961965
the font on the dial is absolute garbage on the fake one though. that would be the one giveaway without needing a comparison.
other than that you're right
>>
>>57961996
True, but functionally they have the same accuracy and other functionality. But you make a risk on the look of it.
>>
What's the difference between kinetic and spring drive??
>>
>>57962408
What's the difference between google and duckduckgo?
>>
>>57962408
kinetic is a quartz movement: battery powered, electric motor drives the hand. the battery is charged through the motion of a rotor.
spring drive is like a mechanical movement in most ways: gears and springs. it's powered by a mainspring, which can be charged manually or by a rotor. but it uses a different escapement, that has a quartz crystal and generates its own electricity from the movement of a wheel.

Tonight I actually dreamed an horological dream if you will. Basically in the dream TGV was supposed to go to jail, but instead he decided to hang himself, it was live on youtube and he was on a rocking chair with a noose on his neck commenting in his usual voice:
"Okay guys, so today I will be hanging myself"
Eventually he pussied out and then blew the brains of some small dog out with a handgun because he wanted it to die together. In my dream I went on /wt/ and posted "Not the pupper"
Now I am not kidding, I have no idea why my dreams are so deranged, but woken up in the middle of the night I did feel pretty insane

Even a relatively plain GS like the SBGH001 actually isn't boring at all if you have an eye for the completely insane level of detail finishing that goes into it.

For that reason, Grand Seikos tend to be MUCH more eye catching in person that in pictures.

This is a good guide but too normal faggy.

Plus most of us buy 50 to 500 bux watches, and we have exotic taste (Vostok for example).

There should be 2 guides:

- the normalfag guide you made, which still needs more information
- the /wt/ guide (it does exist, along the /wt/ vostok guide, but it's outdated)

Still, good job anon.
>>
>>57964353
>- the normalfag guide you made, which still needs more information

What more do you think it needs? I didn't want to go overboard with information (like listing specific watches in each category), so I just posted larger name brands that you essentially can't fuck up too badly buying from.
>>
A cousin of mine who doesn't give a shit about watches gave me his 2 watches. There's a CASIO, I think it's the A158, but the gold version for females.

But there's also a YEMA watch, which is a quartz watch, but it has a has chrono, alarm and rotating bezel. The watch is kinda nice, I'll post pics tonight.

Anyway, does it ring a bell? Is Yema a good brand?

I'm thinking of getting a new battery.
>>
>>57964444
>What more do you think it needs?
Specific watches

>I didn't want to go overboard with information (like listing specific watches in each category)

Ah well OK.

Let's say then that this guide is good to give you the big picture. The /wt/ guide would complete it.

Uh yeah, if you pick chink shit I guess. Any entry-level Casio will be near-perfection, as long as you aim a tad higher than a F91W.

I myself bought an AE1200, I've been wearing it for months in SE Asia in incredibly moist, dusty and dirty environments, and I went scuba diving with it. It's just fine.
>>
>>57964297
If you ask me, Omega and Breitling fall squarely in the lower category.
They too are corpses of what used to be fine horology brands, and they too rely heavily on outsourced ebauches.

Tudor is cool. From the day the brand was founded many decades ago, it was always meant to be Rolex' cheap little whore sister.
And their new in-house movement is even more advanced in many ways than almost all current Rolex movements.
I absolutely hate the tall, flat, polished slab sides of the black bay case though.

>>

Got the vostok or /wt/ guides handy?
>>
>>57964292
I'll jump in on that one. One of the most obvious is the hands. All surfaces on the hands are perfectly even, and that well brushed top surface in contrast to the very well polished side surfaces is very well done. In fact the transitions between polished and brushed surfaces and making a crisp, hard transition between them (without polishing down or brushing up into the next section at all) is very hard, and alternating brushed and polished surfaces is pretty common for many watches. I'm pretty sure it's clear that all of the high end Seikos have at least partially benefited from Seiko's push towards perfection and cooperation with skilled people like Philippe Dufour, even if his focus was more on the Credor shops (which did work on the gs posted in the last thread, the 8 day power reserve one). It's going to be pretty hard to find a watch case finished as well as a hi-beat grand seiko before you get into some pretty expensive shit, often over 20k like a Patek Nautilus.

Also, the specific angle of the polished surfaces on the hands tend reflect light towards your eyes. That's why, even without lume it's often very easy to see the time in low light, because whatever ambient light around tends to show you the hands very well. The indices also have angled, polished surfaces that have the same effect.

Also, you may or may not be able to tell in photos, but the Seiko logo is pretty much perfect, and it isn't applied directly to the dial, it's on stilts. Not so much it's like a bad 3D movie effect, just enough to make it visually more dynamic, without needing to include elements that would clutter the dial more
>>
>>57964789
>If you ask me, Omega and Breitling fall squarely in the lower category.

Some of their lineup is a little iffy, but IIRC Breitling has started making in-house movements (and even their ETA-stuff is COSC certified and about as high quality as you can get), while getting bonus points for being independent (for now) and doing their own thing.

Omega is even more questionable but I added them almost purely on the grounds of the MOTFM +Seamaster, which are decent entry-level choices IMO. Again, I view them as just entering their toes into the true luxury waters, it isn't about them being haute horlogerie or anything, and all 3 of the brands I listed would be
>acceptable
choices if you're looking for something to get started with in the luxury category. Plus it steers them away from the hardcore dogshit like FAG Heuer or Longines that really is junk, and will get them something that they can be proud of and not be mocked for terrible choices (well, Breitling might get you mocked if you're wrists are too small).
>>
>>57964292

If you take a close look at the SBGH001 you will see that the flat top of every baton on the dial and the flat top of the hands have a brushed finish so as to not reflect glare back towards the wearer when checking the time.

However the sides of each baton, the slanted borders of the hands, and the outside border of the date window are all perfectly mirror polished.

Where GS's use a complex baton shape, each and every small facet of each baton will alternate brushed and perfectly mirror polished finishes.

And when I say perfectly, I mean *perfect*, since one of Grand Seiko's hallmarks is their perfect, distortion free mirror polishes.

Similarly throughout the watch every surface incorporates alternating brushed and perfectly mirror polished surfaces.

Examine a Grand Seiko with a loupe or with macro photography and you'll end up MORE impressed, rather than less. There are a lot of watches much more expensive than a GS which will look much worse under that kind scrutiny.
>>
>>57964995
i really like breitling's quartz watches. they have idiosyncratic features that wouldn't really be achievable with a mechanical watch, but are still really easy to read.

So a few months ago I bought the F91 to join in the memes

but after wearing it for so long, I actually love it. Its like it isn't even there, its so light. I don't have to worry about it getting wet or having to be gentle. I have actually used the alarm on occasion, and it is the bane of all LEOs worldwide

How can any watch get any more perfect?
I seriously was planning on getting a few watches, I had a list after having lurked /wt/ for months but I think at this point all I will do now is drop a couple hundred or so on one nice dress watch to wear with suits and the like and I'm done

Some fag was defending doxa in the last thread:

>>57943536
>>57942111
Historical doxa and new doxa are completely different entities:

Doxa died.
New doxa is a shell company owned by some american fucktard vc's.

Their switzerland address is literally a postbox.

They got outed making 99% of their shit in china a few years ago when some dive watch forum detectives looked up doxa's supposed "business partner" in the far east. Turns out it's an OEM watch manufacturer owned partly by the same guys that own doxa.

And get this, on said OEM's website as example watches you could order wholesale they used their Doxa pics.

Many keks were had and doxafag butthurt soared to the moon.

Doxa have long been discredited, and some watch guys finally found the absolute proof, as if the downward spiral of quality wasn't enough to tip all but the most deluded fanboy off.

On doxa fanbois:
Doxa's modern popularity is based off product placement in shitty clive cussler inflight reading; every doxa fag I've met fucking loves those books and wants to be dirk diggler or whatever the fuck his name is in those shitty novels.

It's like submariner roleplayers. But poorer. And dumber.

Sad, since the doxa look is quite distinctive. Too bad they are overpriced chinkshit.

Modern Doxa is for chumps.
Vintage doxa, if you can get it, is the way to go.

Typically smartwatches has a quartz crystal inside.

Anyway, this is also about /appreciation/ and many watch faces look like autismo overload, or divers that are so cliched that it is sad.

Smartwatches for all their failures in recharge requirements often have a nice face design with much information without the overload.

That does not mean mechanical watches are without hope, just that too few have realised the potentials.

My first thought is it looks like something Kobold would make. You could look at those and decide if you feel any are similar.

Otherwise... Swatch YCB4021?

The chronograph with dials at 2 and 10 are almost always quartz and cheap.

I am still undecided but I have done my research and am attracted to the watch because of what I know about it, not just because it's made of gold. It's a little piece of history. I was hoping people here would know more about it than I do and give me some pointers

thing is, i can't wear it I have to give it to the wife

maybe i should just buy a dirtbike instead

They are dogshit. I had one that I got for about half price. It was extremely poorly made, ticked as loud as a Timex and the date window was off.

That's because TAGs are overpriced trash that don't retain their value. Though maybe it will be a good deal at whatever price you'll be getting it, since it will be closer in price to what it's actually worth.

Still it's bland as fuck, the only good-looking TAGs are the ones that are repros of old Heuers.

Funny, I myself got my first watch after playing Farcry 2, as spending so much time looking at a watch made me wonder why I didn't wear one myself.

Both designs are pretty shitty though desu, it's like someone just looked up pictures of watches on the internet and tried to copy the visual style, while completely missing the purpose and functionality of a watch, which makes them completely disconnected from their purpose. Which is why I ended up getting a very different watch.

Though ask yourself if it isn't that beat up style you like. An old scratched watch can be nice to look at, but only if it's a great looking watch made of quality and durable materials in the first place, otherwise it exposes the shitty plating, and anything other than steel and titanium looks like shit when scratched.

Also both are terribly wasted marketing opportunities really, they could have had some watchmaker make a special model for it or something, or just showcase an existing model, but no, they just made their own shitty watches.

A single wheel with 60 numerals would mean you have a tiny font for the minutes. They have to do it this way, same as the big date on their other watches.
And they could have the decimals ring smaller and entirely inside, I suppose, but then the other one would overlap with the hours and you haven't gained anything.

Why do watchfags bang on about luxury watches being better because they have in house movements when Seiko and orient have been making awesome reliable in house movements for decades? Yeah, tons of Chinese watches are high quality, there have been european luxury watch and high end watch manufacturers that have had their watches made in china for years without anyone figuring it out. But it's less cool when it's Chinese because it's chinese.

It's not a complication, the frequency of the escapement is just different.

Hi-beat movements have a theoretically higher upper-limit for accuracy, but in practice it's rarely true.

I can tell you from watching a Zenith El Primero that the second hand appears much smoother than a 3Hz or 4Hz movement.

if you have enough money to afford anything you want you wouldn't call things shitter. When you are at that level you can still find joy in inexpensive watches like seiko and casio.
