DTS-HD and DTS are both bloated codecs. AC3 performs well enough for movies at 640 kbps, there's no way the extra 900 kbps in DTS is worth that much. If you want better than AC3 then you might as well use FLAC5.1 because even that is going to be the same size or smaller than the DTS core, let alone DTS-HD

DTS = lossy

All Blu-rays with DTS come with the lossless DTS-HD track and a lossy DTS core. You transcode the lossless to AC3, not the lossy.

As to why people still use DTS, some encoders don't like any transcoding if they don't have to do it, they figure DTS is good enough, especially for a movie, it's only a few hundred MB more. For something like a TV show that can add up to many GB very quickly though. So for TV I would get AC3 since I'm not gonna notice it anyway.

each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE due to rotational velocidensity, but only 7kbps on SSDs
don't even get me started on cds or dvds
i started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if i try to play any of the tracks i downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap
some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren't stored correctly, in a cool, dry place
