Ubuntu, this is the only choice. Everything else needs some post-configuration, besides Solus which doesn't have enough repos at the moment and Ubuntu derivatives (Trisquel, a 100% libre distribution; Linux Mint, which is probably good but less secure; and Elementary OS, a macOS clone bloated piece of crap).

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Debian. It doesn't need a postconfiguration, is very stable, and is easy to install. Ubuntu is also good choice but is bloated compared to Debian.

O ho ho. Hang thyself by the neck until dead. At the very least, non-free and contrib repos need adding--you're only gimping yourself by not--and most people will want to fix the font rendering. This is assuming everything else works.

Debian or Ubuntu with KDE. Only pic Ubuntu if you think you won't be able to handle adding creating a folder in the install media and extracting a zip of non-free firmware into it. Also choose Ubuntu if you need a slow and pretty installer rather than an ugly but fast one.

Why are you lying so hard on the internet? The Debian installer is no faster or slower than the Ubuntu one, but if you're autistic about using a GUI then Ubuntu has a minimal installer.

For me, it wasn't a big issue so I let the issue be there when I tried Debian first time.

> contrib and non-free repos
They may be needed if you want to use bleeding edge hardwares or some shit wireless cards like Broadcom. When you just want to bring your old laptop the second life with GNU/Linux, then Debian would be one of the best options around there.

Hmm. Good points.
See now I feel bad for suggesting that you hang yourself.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS KIDS

I recommend Ubuntu to everyone since a friend of mine got Debian installed on his laptop by a friend of himself. After some research on firmwares, I checked the fwcutter dependencies one by one with aptitude before seeing it was installed on his laptop. His friend (who probably likes Debian's social contract and dislikes Ubuntu's corporate policy, Amazon and all the drama) hadn't installed NetworkManager.

So I'm gonna install Ubuntu on his computer ASAP. Doing otherwise without the capacity of giving him tech support for the next 10 years would be irresponsible, and we both don't want this situation.
