IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

The driver is rather just the driver, some drivers like the wireless ones come with something like a connection utility which can be used in place of the standard windows utility. You can also use the utility which will identify missing drivers and download them for you.

Too bad that they don't offer driver packs as either an archive or an ISO file, so you could download all drivers and utilities for a given model at once and keep them for offline use without hunting down the individual files (even more tedious if you want to make sure the checksums are correct).

msfn forum used to be the place where they would guide you through that sort of driver pack building guide for you. you could add all the driver packs onto a windows unattended install. I'd suggest looking there if you feel like making a driver pack for thinkpads or your thinkpad in particular.

if i boot it up and it is not plugged in to the charger running on battery only i get some error about power management

Enabling power management...** Message: Failed to connect to the D-Bus daemon: failed to connect to socket /usr/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: no such file or directory

Original batteries are also a lot better in terms of lifetime, quality (real capacity), security of use and reliability.
Pic rel, fucking 2011 T420 battery in T430. Still working perfectly fine. 430 motherfucking charge cycles and it still holds more mAh of capacity than any replacement 9cell chink battery on the market.
Don't get cucked and get genuine batteries.
>>
>>57933012
>doesn't let them charge

do they stop receiving juice after the "factory cells" are reported to be full giving you only the factory charge? or does it just not report it and the laptop lives on with power anyway??

One option would be to get a dead slice cell and use the controller from it.
>>
>>57933141
It doesn't charge at all and the battery reports 0% but it gets detected and Power Manager recognizes there's a battery plugged in.

It happened with the old cells too which was why i tried to replace them in the first place so i guess the controller was faulty.

lel. Just use Wine or a virtual machine for that stuff.

Take it from a user of XP-era Thinkpads: you want lightweight Linux. Lubuntu is comfy and easy to use, but it wouldn't work on my second thinkpad when the first one died, so I switched to AntiX, which is also very fast.

I have a T420 that I'm slowly maxing out and I plan to use it indefinitely. How to make sure I will be able to use it for as long as possible? I mean.. I want this to be the last laptop I ever purchase. I already hooked it up with a dock to monitor and keyboard so I don't wear out the hinges and the keyboard at least when I use it at home (which is 90% of the time.) How long should I expect to be able to use it without failing catastrophically?
>>
>>57934090
Why worry about hinges?
Parts are so dirty cheap that you could get it almost for free.
>and I plan to use it indefinitely
Top kek.
Max it up by upgrading it to T430 with nvidia gpu, replace cpu to quad core, get 16GiB RAM meme, replace screen with full hd one and get an eGPU. Then you can call it maxed out with possibility of long term use
>>
>>57934147

>>

>>57934090
>How long should I expect to be able to use it without failing catastrophically?
You'll be okay, a quad core Sandy Bridge from 2011 has like 65 or 70% the performance of their Skylake counterpart in benchmarks so it'll be strong for a good amount of time.

If some part dies it's easy and inexpensive to replace.
>>
>>57934212
Barely anything CPU-wise, the only upgrade is the integrated GPU which is a lot better and usb 3.0 ports but comes with the downgrade of the keyboard which you'll need to spend some extra bucks to fix.

If you're a manchild who want gaymes you can use an eGPU setup on both platforms anyway, making it moot.
>>
>>57934519
Fuck off you incompetent bitch.
>>57934212
ivy bridge (t430) is made in 22nm technology, which means it's a lot better in terms of generated heat and power consumption. Any T430 can handle both quad core CPU and dedicated nvidia GPU with additional overclock. T420 has problems with handling ONLY the lowest sandy bridge quad core cpu with iGPU only, and it kills the battery much more.
Also Ivy Bridge CPUs are much, much better than sandy bridge.
Also HD4000 iGPU instead of HD3000. Much faster (about 100%). Plus the T430 CPU supports 2133MHz RAM, unlike T420.
>>
>>57934475
What would be a logical increment over a 2520M, which is noticeably better but not house fire tier?
>>
>>57934630
2640m for singlecore performance
2720qm for multicore performance

The 2720qm is a massive boost in multicore performance but singlecore performance is almost the same as the 2520m, keep that in mind if you use applications focusing on singlecore performance a lot.
>>
God damnit guys, are you seriously THIS autistic to recommend T420 over T430?
Holy fuck, mobile Sandy Bridge CPUs were a massive failure and these should not be ever recommended.
T430 can be easily fixed with keyboard swap, which requires almost no monies and intelligence.
>>
>>57934708

Not many shortcut keys work with the T420 keyboard on the T430, but if price wasn't an issue I wouldn't tell anyone to get a T420 over a T430

Hey /tpg/

My x200 came with no front floorpads, and I'm thinking of modelling them on the CAD, and 3D printing them with flexible filament.

I'm having a hard time finding a photo from which taking measurements. I find that the front pads aren't the same as the back pads, so I can just guess here, by using pic related, and the back pads.

Can someone post better photos of the front pads? or direct me to them? By now I have a good approximation, and I'm going to try it out. But I'd like them to be more accurate.

Also, it is more compliant with the philosophy I'm planning to have with my x200. I'm going full libretard with it, and having stuff fixed myself.

I'm currently working as a CAD designer for 3D printing so thought I could make them myself.

Don't have one but on my local thinktard forum they have the following experience:

T420 was not designed to cool a quad core 45W cpu. It gets hot too easily. You will likely have to cap the CPU at 99% so it doesn't switch on Turbo. Also, single core performance is not better than that of the 2520M so unless you plan to run things which require 4 cores then you are better off with an i7-2620M.

T520 is another question.

Again this is not my personal experience, I gathered this from my local thinkpad enthusiast forum.

Hey /g/uys, looking to buy my first thinkpad. Will probably install arch on it. Budget is around $200. Will just be used for school, work, programming, nothing heavy. Any recommendations? was thinking about this:

They used the body of x100e which has 11.6" for a cheap 10" which led to this contraption

if you're still here what alienware screen goes in a t420 and is it easy to install if you're already using a 1600 x 900 t420?

wanted to buy the thinkpad 13, but I see it has the
> USB-C (1st gen.)

what does that mean? Is it any different than the usb-c seen in, for example, macbooks or xps 13?

time4ubuntu
>>
>>57950354
I believe anon is referencing the alienware m14x panel which fits without having to stretch the cables or anything weird.
>>
>>57950446
Hmm is it that much better than the stock t420 one? I'd rather try my luck with a full HD mod if I were to replace the screen tbqh

Intel doesn't allow them to distribute the WiFi drivers with the install, you have to copy your required firmware to /etc/firmware/ if you can't do that it's probably not for you

They say it's glossy and has good viewing angles.
>>
>>57950468
>>57950468
I'm not quite sure that is possible but honestly I could be totally wrong. All the screen mods I have seen so far have involved either the carbon x1 or m14x

Yes, i don't get all the people saying that it's not doable, i can run mine without immediate throttling or temp issues with HT and turbo boost enabled.

USB Type-C connector that you can use for data, video output or charging
But it's not a Thunderbolt 3 port like the macbooks or xps 13

>$70 in customs? wow why so much?
Country regulations, every item declared for more than $25 needs to pay a percentage of the declared value + shipping as tax on top of everything.
>Fuck me man, $100 in shipping? That is rough, specially when its like $17 to ship a W530 w/ an AC adapter
I never knew why the $100 USPS shipping was a thing since I'm not from US and don't know their policies but since i paid it already, can't be helped.

It really isn't. I have Windows 7 with Aero enabled installed on my T60P and it's perfect. Microsoft wanted to rub Windows 10 all over my beautiful laptop, but I told them to go fuck themselves. Specially when their ugly upgrade spyware told me that my device was incompatible.

All the drivers for my T60P exist for Windows 7/Vista.

I bought off ebay from one of British merchants.

>>57951583
also there are no relatively good/bad ones, there are just 2 - x220 one and x230's one. Both are pretty much the same.

I did this and still ended up with some annoying but not deal breaking ghosting with the B3 model (unless the guy forged the sticker) so make sure you get the T1 model.

I'm looking at picking up an x260, because of the hot swapping batteries, but fucking Lenovo has no easy way to purchase other batteries on their webstore and there's no information on what the model numbers are.

These fucking assholes. I just want to have endless battery life you chinks.
