Most mechanical watches these days are automatic, and you will not need to wind them if you wear them every day. If you leave them off the wrist for about a day and a half, you'll need to wind them back up and set the time.

Battery/Solar watches (i.e., most quartz watches) do not need to be wound.

I'd say the pope watch.

The casio is nice but if it's going to be your only watch then the pope watch is better because itr's more formal. The Casio is a bit nerdy

Both pope watch and the fake A159 from AliExpress. The watch on the left doesn't have the Casio logos and the display is very faint and dark when viewed on a angle wrong but it was only $1 on eBay for a fake A159. I don't wear the real A159 at all that watch I should be wearing it daily instead. I bought 3 fake $1 eBay A159's.

Pope at 8 €
a158 at 16 €

>looks too gaudy or it doesn't suit me with street attire
I like keeping my A159 in minty mint condition. That's all. If I happen to lose the fakes I don't really care. The fake A159's are terrible. The bracelet feels flimsier and fake but it takes a beating. The locking mechanism fails a lot more then the genuine.
>inb4 fake
>or poser.
>>
>>57914142
>Do the fake ones keep correct time?
Absolutely not. The fakes lose minutes per week. The genuine loses ±30 seconds per month. Or my Casio G7510 vibrating watch I rarely use for motorcycling loses ±15 seconds per month. I'll look into buying a used Seiko King Quartz but I'm not a wristwatch fanatic. I'm an audiophile..
>>
does anyone here have an opinion about this watch:

https://www.rosefieldwatches.com/ww/the-tribeca/white-black/silver

i asked a few days ago what to buy for my gf and we kind of found nothing good.

most were either very tacky (she doesnt like diamonds and stuff) or too large or generally ugly.

also there are almost no automatic watches for women. women don't need this anyway as only few are autistic enough to care but i would appreciate it nevertheless if her watch wasn't a plebeian quartz.

what to do.

The sub homage thing has always been a meme on every watch board ever.
It's just that there was a massive discussion yesterday about whether the Chris Ward trident is a sub homage or not, until someone posted a brochure from Christopher Ward saying that it is in fact a sub homage.

Good times.

i was more worried about the watch being too "bright", since the bezel is white, for a strap that has some dark colours.

Gray/Black/Grey&Black zulu strap to fit both the dial and or the bezel.

These are nylon. Nato straps in particular have many advantages, most having to do with protecting your watch from falling off and losing it, which happens mostly from springbars breaking. In fact a proper nato strap will have a springbarless buckle.

Not particularly, no. The other major player in that price range is Omega but honestly they're owned by Swatch and shoot themselves in the foot with their endless "limited editions" which ironically kills their collector's value, particularly when all of their variations are tasteless.

A Navitimer is going to have a classic, recognizable design, cheap service costs, significant value retention, and has useful complications and features.

Cons are aesthetics maybe, which are subjective of course, but you wouldn't put a not on a Patek Philippe Gondolo. An other thing is comfort, they're normally comfy as fuck but not as much as a good leather.

Thank you, I am not looking for hands that fit a seiko. It's just that those hands look similar to the original hands of this 1940s glashütte watch I have where the hands was exchanged in the 50s. (I think it originally had radioactive lume which is why it was changed)
>>
>>57921823
So every time I see this watch, given its intended audience and the "diashock" on the dial, I get very curious about how good the various anti-shock systems are. Does anyone actually have any data on the sort of shocks various diashock generations can handle? Did they change anything other than directional compensation? Are the movements protected in other ways apart from some (maybe all depending on the model?) of the jewels getting some special protection?

I've spent some more time with it and I think most of what I felt when I first saw the watch review is still there.

The finishing is superb, but not perfect as with most chinese things. There are tiny bits of silver paint or something leaking out behind the 12 o-clock batons and there is a microscopic scratch on the seconds hand which becomes visible at the wrong angle. But it looks great overall and really out of place on my wrist with my shitty clothes. It's a shame too because the brushed areas are already starting to get scratched up.

hmm starting to get a little suspicious.

I won bidding an skx in mint condition like 2 days ago and sellers typically ship the next day because I pay right away.

His username includes the name leandre something. Hope I didn't NIGG'D.

>>57923346
Have you seen the movement on that thing? It is a beautiful column wheel piece.
Also, the only truly suspect thing about watches woth seagull movements is that the movements are supplied unlubricated. As long as you arent buying from a shit-tier watchmaker the movement will do a great job.
From what I can recall the only issue woth that watch is the lack of water resistance, though I'm sure sink anon could comment better on that.

I wouldn't worry desu, worst case you have like 30days to file a claim with PayPal/Ebay.

Which is why if you sell you must get signature confirmation to protect your ass.

I never ever ship something over $75 without signature confirmation becuase the new thing is people saying they never got something (even though tracking says they did) and Amazon/eBay are like ok guess you didn't XD and fuck the seller over.

I had someone buy the rubber band off my SKX when I got it for $25 and the UPS tracking clearly said left with customer but Amazon said lol sorry you're fucked to me. I googled the guy's name and he's on a few places trying to blackmail sellers. Amazon didn't care.

I made a comment about this in a previous thread, but I bought a Rolex JUST-Dweller online for $4000. It was supposed to be a minty tritium dial one from the 90's, but instead they sent me a 2002 one with the luminova hands and dial, which I didn't want. They're willing to refund my money but now that I've been thinking about it I'm hesitating as $4000 is a really fucking good price for one of these in mint condition (albeit not the one I wanted), and if I get a refund and try to rebuy a tritium version in the same condition it's going to cost me $500 to $1000 more.

Should I just say fuck it and keep this one, or send it back and try to buy one of the tritium versions for potentially a lot more money (which I don't really have).

Apply electic field to a rock and watch it vs craft an intricate system of springs and gears that have been meticulously engineered to move at specific increments of time, with considerably more moving parts and points of failure. Compare that additionally to how quartz watches (above the $2 chink range) keep time to an accuracy which puts almost all mechanicals to shame, and you have a market crash which put my grandfather out of a job (rip Elgin).

It's a shame what quartz watches did to the watch industry, particularly in England and America. We used to produce some of the best watches in the world.
>>
>>57926937
No, no. I meant automatics vs. manual winds.
>>
>>57926911

$500-1000 isn't a lot more money relatively speaking. If buying a watch makes you go broke, is it worth it?

>$500-1000 isn't a lot more money relatively speaking. If buying a watch makes you go broke, is it worth it?

Well it won't make me broke, but it's pushing my self-imposed budget a lot.
>>
>>57926911
If $500- $1000 is a lot of money to you, you shouldn't be buying a $4000 watch, especially of it's not exactly what you want. Don't go broke over a fancy bracelet, and don't waste money on shit you don't want: no matter how much it's discounted, if you didn't want it, you're still wasting money, not saving it (unless you can resell for a profit and actually do so).

Honestly, tho, the metal bracelet feels really great and I do actually plan on getting a leather strap from Hirsch (the performance ones are LIT) at some point.

Go for it. Their warranty is provided by Asurion through Amazon. My watch broke the first week I had it, they asked me what happened, I told them it stopped working, and they refunded me right away. They didn't tell me to send the watch back or anything, they just told me to keep it and gave the refund as well. It wasn't as high a price as the alpinist, bit I wouldn't worry about it. Amazon return would be easier as well.

England has some great independant watchmakers now.
>>
>>57927003
Just look at Rolex. They pretty much only make automatics and are by far the biggest volume seller.
>>
>>57927146
Looks like it's a real worldtimer. The use of double hands to make a simili-retrograde dial is interesting too.
I'm not too fond of the looks, but it seems alright.
>>

I see. In terms of models, is it still the case?

I'm currently a plebian poorfag wearing a beat up version of pic related (need to figure out the best way to get the gouges out of the plastic crystal), but I'll probably be upgrading to something like the Seiko SKX007 soon. Perhaps I will have the funds for a watch collection some day.

>If $500- $1000 is a lot of money to you, you shouldn't be buying a $4000 watch

I'm using the money I won betting on Trump. Although I could still afford a Rolex anyway as I have a decent discretionary income, as I won a few grand betting it essentially "feels" like I'm getting the Rolex for free as it has little effect on my base-line finances. It's not truly a big deal to pay more, it's mostly just the psychological effect of "it's no longer financed entirely by the tears of Hillary supporters".

Not related to you but how do the people here who have expensive watches (more than 2000usd) explain to people why you have one? Or do you atleast have a job and lifestyle that fits?

idk neets with a rolex just kinda makes my mind spin a bit

the idea is that you don't have to explain because you have a fuckin rowwwwlex
if anyone ever actually pushes me I'd love to just say

but I know I never would

>Not related to you but how do the people here who have expensive watches (more than 2000usd) explain to people why you have one?

I doubt most people will recognize a Rolex to begin with, especially if it's anything other than a Submariner or Datejust (and especially if you put it on a NATO or leather strap instead of leaving the oyster bracelet on).

But if anyone asks you can just tell them you have a fine appreciation for mechanical wristwatches and wanted one that would last a lifetime.

>Or do you atleast have a job and lifestyle that fits?

Fug, I work in a factory making 13 bucks an hour. I couldn't give a shit if my coworkers think something negatively about me for wearing an expensive watch. Besides a lot of guys wear gold chains and other jewelry and that stuff really is worthless, whereas a luxury wrist watch retains great value and (can) exude a sense of refinement and taste.

I'm new to /wt/ and I'm still trying to justify the prices of mechanical watches. Sure, the engineering is good but, behind the clockface, it's hardly appreciable. That's why I'd get either a skeleton or a tourbillon, if I'd ever to get a mechanical watch. And then there's the fact that these things have been functionally deprecated by a much cheaper, more accurate quartz solution.

You either appreciate and value the fine craftsmanship and intricacy of a timepiece, and often a unique piece of history, or you don't. It's one of those things that's not for everyone. At least for me it's the same reason I collect old firearms and (eventually) cars. There's something about modern quartz watches (and firearms, cars, etc.) that's been lost, regardless of how more purely utilitarian they might arguably be.

I don't know if I should go for a 40mm or a 42mm Flieger. My wrist has a 17.5cm circumference.

Also see picture, 40mm Amphibia on my wrist.

*43mm instead of 42mm

I wanted a 3-6-9-12 dial with lots of lume area. I already painted it with Nemoto lume, looks okay at 1:1 for a first try, but total shit through the loupe, so I'll be touching it up later on. Not too bothered by it, it's an Amphibia, not a Rolex Observatory.

You'll probably be fine, don't listen to the body image disorder sissies here, who think a mens watches should always be 38mm and below.

The battery's actually the thing that's drawn me to mechanical. I've had watches die on me on really awkward moments.

That said, are there watches that can be winded up but have quartz movements? I want the accuracy of a quartz movement but can be manually recharged.

Solar or kinetic, mostly Orients

>>

I don't think there are hand wound quartz watches, but there are a few automatics. Mostly Seiko Kinetic now, I don't think ETA/Swatch still makes Autoquartz.

What you might need is solar.

But then again you're unlikely to find a grown woman with the mind of an adult either.
