Yeah, I have a franken tc submariner that I adore but that was a lot of money (particularly since I've been swapping in genuine parts lately, but started at $600).

Was just curious if there was anything that looked nice from China that was no-brand or something with a nice movement. I'm probably going to go with a SNK809 and a nice nato strap, since the one it comes with sucks.

Wish it wasn't bead blasted. I might go crazy with it and polish it like this guy did:

If you want to be a real hotshot then brush it.
>>
>>57886116

Couple reviews said it was scratchy. Is that the case? A really nice nato strap isn't exactly that expensive. Though it is kind of funny putting a strap on a watch that is nearly the same price as the watch was originally.

>>57886123

That'd probably be more labor intensive since I'd have to be careful to get the grain correct. But it's a nice idea.

i guess a little bit, compared to a nice strap. but it's usable for sure, for people who don't want to buy a strap right away (it's usually a first mechanical watch).

The funny thing is that I actually have a genuine 16610 now that I inherited. The fake is a 116610, but I like it more since I've spent more time making it my own. I started working on it a couple years back and could easily afford the 'real deal' now, but there's something about tinkering that I really enjoy. Different strokes I guess.

Okay I am on a quest to find the perfect watch for me.
Essentially Casio 5610 is the ideal candidate, but I ain't dropping money on it now.
Maybe there is a cheaper alternative that has:
1) Toughness, I need a watch that won't fall apart when I use a power tool or something similar
2) Has a snooze alarm (would live with simple alarm too)
3) Radio controlled as important as toughness
>>
>>57886632
Is that some stereotype? I am an islamist and I wear my watch on the left wrist. Why would the right wrist be particularly islamist? As far as I know there is no fatwas on it and I can not imagine that it is derived from the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet (saw).
>>
Here is an alternative to tritium: diamond battery. No, seriously: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_Battery
Briefly: the cascades of beta emissions can be used to stimulate phosphor so you can get a wider variety of colour.

With a half life of 5700 years it will outlive the watch.
>>
>>57886895
Sounds exciting, now we just need to make a watch that can last for 5700 years then we have a proper family heirloom.

Lume degrading over decades isn't a huge deal, it can be replaced. Much much light does it actually throw? Tritium is already sort of a side grade, exchanging lower peak brightness for sustained luminescence in extended darkness.

>I'm right handed so much figured it makes sense?
The general idea is to wear a watch on your off-hand. If you're right handed your often do things with your right hand that could damage your watch. Let's say you see something inside some cinder blocks or tree roots, you're going to reach in to grab it with your right hand. You can scratch or impact the watch during that.

Also, if you're right handed you tend to do things with your right hand, which means you can still check the time freely when your left hand is free if it's on your left.

>Lume degrading over decades isn't a huge deal, it can be replaced.
Well, if the lume is part of the face itself it would be a hassle to replace it.

>Much much light does it actually throw?
Not sure but I guess it is more than tritium since this will be in solid state rather than gaseous and also because of the avalanche effect mentioned, multiplying the number of electrons. I have a tritium source at home and at night it is easily visible at 10 m and with some effort you can read in the light from it. Where I live it is dark most of the day and lume is handy. A fully lumed face and hands would be better on the eyes.

>Tritium is already sort of a side grade, exchanging lower peak brightness for sustained luminescence in extended darkness.
Compared to lume you mean?

Also tritium tubes are relatively large and heavy for the seconds hand while lume and diamond source would be more compact and lightweight.

Is power reserve a factor for you when you're chosing a watch?
Would you pay more for a 60h PR over a 40h?
Would you accept a larger watch if it meant longer PR?

I'm looking around, and short of novel escapement designs (mostly using solicon) that are quite expensive, it seems that watches with a longer power reserve are substantially bigger to accomodate the larger, or more numerous, barrels.

But is it even worth it? An automatic movement seems to be good enough to keep a watch working, and there are winders for the pieces you'll only wear occasionnaly.

It would be like explaining water to a fish, but here goes:
>bezel markings are nearly identical
>indices are nearly identical, except for a "twin towers" arrangement at 12 o'clock instead of the Rolex's triangle
>bezel colour matches dial
>rectangular-ish minute hand / round-ish hour hand
>bezel knurling
>general dimensions, shapes, and proportions

Just because so many other watches pretty much copied the submariner, doesn't mean this one isn't doing it too.

Sup /wt/, what do you think of this sub homage? I really I've how it has lugs, a round dial, minutes, hours, AND seconds hands. Plus the hour markings at 3,6, and 9 are practically the same as the ones Rolex uses. They outdid themselves with the original touch of changing the twelve from a triangle. The fact that the watch has a crystal really makes it indistinguishable. Even to a watch aficionado, who knows that the defining characteristic of a Rolex is a sweeping seconds hand, this one fits the bill!

Well, before the fifty fathoms to be precise (see follow-up post below).
>>
>>57899410
>>57899090
>>57899013

And here's the 1953 "fifty fathoms" by Blancpain.

This provided the actual inspiration for the form factor and features of the Rolex submariner, which came out one year later in 1954.
>unidirectional bezel
>large round illuminated hour indices, with bar indices at 3, 6, and 9
>etc.

There can be no doubt however that the Submariner was the watch that popularized this form factor, and barely anyone knows what a "fifty fathoms" is.
It's possible even that Rolex's submariner was developing these features independently from Blancpain, since the releases of both watches were so close in time.

The C60 trident is LITERALLY a Submariner homage.

According to Christopher Ward themselves.

I never said "everything came from Rolex".
All I ever said was that it looked like a Submariner from a distance, because it had the same general elements.

I don't give a fuck WHAT that cringey company says, a "homage" where you alter the majority of the details is no longer a "homage" in the sense that watch Internet autists typically use the term.

The Trident is a sub "homage" in the sense of being a rotating bezel dive watch in the genre of watch the Fifty Fathoms and Sub created, not in the sense that a Steinshit or a SQUAAALEEE are sub homages.

Yeah I did. We went to many stores together, and has pointed out similar styles to the one on the left. She also does like two-tone, and roman numerals. I have found a few watches that fit the bill but they are rather expensive for what they are asking for a run of the mill regular quartz movement. I at least like that these have the percisionist movement and I know she will appreciate the sweeping seconds hand.

And BOY is this watch a looker. It's great on pictures, but i's 10 times greater IRL. I'll still post pics this w.e. tho, but it's definitely a watch that I hugely recommand to all people that like its design.

Are a woman really going to appreciate such a watch?

I would recommend this: http://a.co/1nsrLrj

And this for you if you want to pair up in a similar style: http://a.co/4PxR8yE

both have Quartz movements, but the Casio have more useful features and is cheaper. Unless you have enough money to give her something with gold on it, it is not necessarily something that is worth the extra cost. Unless she has a taste for mother-of-pearl or so on.

I guess you know her style better, just recommending something that functionally does the same thing and have the same kind of movement.

Haven't really looked into the Milgauss, but between the other two i prefer the Sea-dweller. The gmt is nice but those polished center links attract scratches like a magnet and make the watch look a little too blingy so not ideal for everyday wear. The SD feels like a tougher watch and to me is more comfortable and a little better proportioned with the thinner lugs and no cyclops. talking about the sd 4000 of course not the Deepsea. that thing is a beast.

The watch itself is great. The build quality on the case and dial is awesome. The AR coating on the crystal is okay, but not nearly to the level of the Omega someone posted earlier. The finishing on the hands is phenomenal. Leagues above the finishing on the hands of my Rodina. The weakest point is probably the band. It is comfortable and easy to use, but it a bit rubbery for my taste. Eventually I might swap it out. It (as fliegers in general) is incredibly readable, so I'll be wearing it for the next week or so for my finals.

I also have a Tisell GMT and absolutely love it. In that case the bracelet is also astoundingly good. Not quite on the level of Rolex, but astoundingly close for the price.

>>57906856
>I changed my mind about that borealis actually

Well obviously.
It was either that or admit that the Chris Ward is obviously a sub homage. Like Chris Ward himself admits.
>>
>>57906892
They're homages in the sense that at first glance they appear similar but when you take a second look they're really quite different. If steinshit is 8/10 on the homage scale the Chris Ward and this Borealis are more like a 3 I would say.

What is the /wt/ on "Bamford" Rolex pieces? Personally I think only someone with a lot of melanin in their skin would own one.
>>
>>57908133
because it's a sub homage, obviously
>>
>>57908340

yes that's definitely for the negro client.

generally speaking, anything with bright, fully saturated red/orange/green is.
>>
>>57908340
Bamford is for people who inherited more money than they know what to do with.
>>
>>57907713
Generally, if you have both full links, half links and micro adjustments, you can get the watch to the point where during the day, the fluctuations in the size of your wrist due to hydration, exercise etc is always comfortable.

So when your wrist is at its biggest you might want it to be tight, but still comfortable. Tight but you can move it up and down your wrist with your other hand. And then when your wrist is at its smallest it can move on its own but it's not flying all around or getting caught on your elbow.

>>57908340
They can do everything from very subtle to very tacky. I would like to know more about their graphite particle coating. And I would like to own something if theirs at some point.
>>

>>57908437

I agree with NineBall, some of the more subtle changes looks OK. But I don't see the appeal in the bright neon coloured shit at all. And surely doing anything like this to a Rolex would devalue it like mad, or am I wrong there?

those bright secondary colors look fine with full-blooded sub-saharan skin. but there's a reason their traditional textiles use those violently garish colors and traditional european textiles tend to be less saturated and favor blues and yellows.
>>
>>57908509
Note that it is a GMT, and in that style there is very little in that price range. The best GMT I can think of by those manufacturers in the orient one, but it isn't nearly enough of a sub homage.
