it's also made by an agency which requires the best security on this planet.
>>57897633
not really. you could think of it as a system which has more strict permissions than the standard linux minus gnu user system.
i believe it's automatically configured in fedora so you don't have to fuck around with it that much

yeah. these retards are either too stupid to grasp the concept of software auditing or they're just shitposting retards. either way, just ignore them and do you own research.
selinux has been audited a fuck ton of times precisely because people distrust the nsa, rightly so. nothing bad has been found until proven otherwise.

if its been extensively audited and nothing found like he says, there is essentially no more risk than using anything not coded by the NSA
The NSA Uses redhat, im pretty sure. And they want to have as strong security as possible. Why would they slip backdoors into their own fucking software, for some other intelligence agency to find and fuck them up with? Not every involvement the U.S government has with software is compromising it to spy on its users, they need their own shit too.

it isn't a reason for using it. it's simply a neutral statement about it not being riskier than literally anything else.
i'm sure there is some small piece of unauditied software on your system right now. it is technically more riskier than using selinux.

related to that pic: anyone got good documentation on installing GNU/Linux on the Lemote Yeelong?

The repos for the Debian install on it by default are broken. Switching to official Debian repos gives errors about missing PGP keys. Adding them doesn't work. Was just planning to do a wipe and reinstall, but it's difficult to find guides on this thing, and you have to do a bit more than you usually do with installing GNU/Linux on something.

-USE flags allows great customization of software
-CLFAGS optimize software for your PC, enabling advanced features of your CPU resulting in potential speed increase
-great for developers and cross-compiling
-multiple versions of software are available to install, a lot of programs (especially development programs and libraries) support having multiple versions installed simultaneously.

Ok so I have been distro hopping for like two weeks since my KDE Neon installation started crashing.
I need something relatively stable, easy to install/setup, good looking and something with new software.
Today I managed to install Debian testing with KDE just before work but havent played around with it yet, but does anyone now does it have new software or am I stuck with old versions of Firefox and other things?
Or should I just ditch all that and install Fedora? Never used it or any other rpm distro so I dont know what to expect but it seems to be perfect for me from what I've read.

tl;dr Debian Testing or Fedora for a good up-to-date system?

Buddy there's a desktop version of it with additional features. It's called Ubuntu (or spinoffs of forementioned)

If you're using proprietary GPU drivers Ubuntu LTS is a good choice as well.

What distros should I put on my USB?

I already installed Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Debian stable, CentOS, Fedora, ElementaryOS, Zorin, Crunchbang, ophcrack, and Hiren's boot CD(technically not Linux but has system rescue CD on it so it kinda counts)

I don't think I need anything else, but I'm willing to put literally anything on my USB (it's ntfs formated and 64 gigabytes)
>>

He's right.

If you're going to use Debian (which by itself is a pretty good distro that fits extremely wide variety of use cases) you ought to use the Stable branch.

iirc Fedora only freezes glibc and has a partial freeze on the kernel
I like RPM's much more than .deb packages but they can be a bit slower to update
I would recommend enabling the RPMFusion repos to get all the non free stuff
and I personaly enable updates-testing on my fedora installs, and I have not had a issue since
I started using updates-testing

I need to be spoonfed regarding installing a linux distro on the new SSD. I was thinking of elementaryOS or ZorinOS for a smooth transition from Windows to linux. I'm open to suggestions and I also want to know how to install it to the new SSD without touching the Windows installation.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

SELinux works as advertised except it is incredibly complex, so 99.99% of the time it's disabled on production servers (unless you pay for RHEL).

Speaking of RHEL, if Fedora guy here is interested you can get RHEL 7 w/all dev tools free now through their 'developer program'. It's a pretty good system if you pay nothing for it.

Fedora is the most secure out of all the major linux distros by default install. They actually sandbox shit, pay attention to the firewall ruleset, have competent repositories with (usually) timely security patches ect.

Of course you can make any linux distro 'secure' with grsec patches or setting up your own SELinux sandboxes but that requires work and maintenance. It's like the difference between Net/FreeBSD and OpenBSD. One by default has all the protections enabled and the others you have to do it yourself

There's Ubuntu Mate, Xubuntu and about a dozen other versions. You can always after installing generic unity change everything you want.

systemd is really the only choice now due to maintenance, even obscure distros like Exherbo thats what they're mainly going with. Linux is now muh cloud/container OS and desktop is being abandoned for devops shit like NixOS, CoreOS, KVM headless containers running proprietary apps.

Future of desktop is a dumb terminal like Chromebook that connects to cloud junk through webassembly proprietary binaries. Apple, MS, they're all going this route too

Use something easy to remember, like a common name that you use for yourself. Forgetting your name is kind of weird.

To fix this, log in as root. ls /home/ and see what name is there. There, you have your name. Now as root you can also change the password by typing passwd yourname. Don't literally type yourname, but the name that you found in /home/

>>
>>57902507
I like CWM from OpenBSD. It has a GNU/Linux port available. It SHOULD be in the ubuntu repos, but I don't use it so I'm not sure. It's a different kind of wm. It's floating without any decorations. You can configure borders and their colors if you want in .cwmrc. Windows are moved around and resized with alt + hjkl/alt + ctrl hjkl, or by pressing alt and using the mouse to drag, middle mouse to resize. It uses very little memory. With just a terminal open uses about 200MB of ram. I rarely go above 600MB ram with many tabs open in firefox!

I noticed a lot of people using i3 are using it like a floating manager. Which is very strange, because it's shit for that. Just use CWM which was designed for that and looks basically the same (but no bar).

If it's not available in a repo, just go to github https://github.com/chneukirchen/cwm
and $make #make install

The .cap file is the handshake. You need to run a dictionary on it.

If my memory serves me correctly it is:

aircrack-ng -w + path/to/dictionary + path/to/.cap

example

aircrack-ng -w /home/anon/Documents/rockyou.txt /home/anon/Documents/.cap

Ubuntu asks where you want to install the GRUB boot loader. If you installed it to the drive you installed Ubuntu on, then the BIOS/UEFI will still link to wherever it is linked to. In this case Windows.
Hit F11 during startup and select the disk with Ubuntu. You can permanently set it in BIOS settings.

How people are supposed to support themselves and their families in that scenario aren't things he has to deal with because he is basically a permanent grad student. He does make some good points about privacy, but for him, there is no middle ground. Anything that may reduce your privacy even the slightest bit (like movie recommendations on Netflix) is evil according to him, and must be destroyed. In a lot of ways he show classic signs of mental splitting, which is a classic symptom of mental illness. To top it off, when he does write code, he does so in the style of the awful GNU style guide which is a crime against humanity IMHO.

Woah woah buddy stop sperging, he actually uses free as in freedom Thinkpad with an Atheros WLAN card that has fully free as in freedom drivers and a reflashed BIOS for Libreboot that removes Intel DRM engine necessary to initialize the CPU (IME).

You can actually buy one from FSF-approved vendor, albeit it's retardedly expensive for what it is (almost decade old laptop)

And firmware for devices like storage devices and motherboard components save for bios are transparent to the user.

Previously he used a chink-designed and chink-made Lemote Yeelong netbook with authored Loongson MIPS cpu running entirely on free software.

But he isnt joe blow. He has all these demands that have to be met before he even looks at it. In this case, all firmware needs to be libre free/foss at EVERY POINT,or it is just one giant hypocrisy

What about the transpiration he uses?
Cars have proprietary software on them, as do buses and aircraft. Yet he uses them when its convenient and not pertaining to his "Ideals" (READ:Mental illness)

I don't understand your point.

Who ever said someone has to set an example to be right about something?

I could be a mass murderer and still go around the country to schools telling kids about how wrong murder is.
Does being a hypocrite make me wrong?
>>

He stated that it's your freedom to choose whether you want your life to be dictated by proprietary software or not.

If it's not his computer he's not going to install free as in freedom software just as you don't come to someone's house, take a big shit in their WC and leave.

I know you folks in india have different traditions regarding defecation but we're talking western world.

Which tantrum exactly? The one not regarding software licensing? He's in no way an authority on anything that's not related to software licensing.

As linus has stated various times, publicly, if there was no gnu he would have use another project avalible at the time, gnu is nothing special.

But when you type "sudo apt install firefox" or "sudo apt-get install firefox" into the terminal, the same thing still happens, right?

“Free software” means software that respects users' freedom and community. Roughly, it means that the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. Thus, “free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer”. We sometimes call it “libre software,” borrowing the French or Spanish word for “free” as in freedom, to show we do not mean the software is gratis.

We campaign for these freedoms because everyone deserves them. With these freedoms, the users (both individually and collectively) control the program and what it does for them. When users don't control the program, we call it a “nonfree” or “proprietary” program. The nonfree program controls the users, and the developer controls the program; this makes the program an instrument of unjust power.
>>
>>57905794
The four essential freedoms

A program is free software if the program's users have the four essential freedoms:

The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).
The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

A program is free software if it gives users adequately all of these freedoms. Otherwise, it is nonfree. While we can distinguish various nonfree distribution schemes in terms of how far they fall short of being free, we consider them all equally unethical.

>>57905776
Yes.

See
>>57905741

From the apt manpage
>All features of apt(8) are available in dedicated APT tools like apt-
>get(8) and apt-cache(8) as well. apt(8) just changes the default value
>of some options (see apt.conf(5) and specifically the Binary scope).
>>
>>57905809
In any given scenario, these freedoms must apply to whatever code we plan to make use of, or lead others to make use of. For instance, consider a program A which automatically launches a program B to handle some cases. If we plan to distribute A as it stands, that implies users will need B, so we need to judge whether both A and B are free. However, if we plan to modify A so that it doesn't use B, only A needs to be free; B is not pertinent to that plan.

“Free software” does not mean “noncommercial”. A free program must be available for commercial use, commercial development, and commercial distribution. Commercial development of free software is no longer unusual; such free commercial software is very important. You may have paid money to get copies of free software, or you may have obtained copies at no charge. But regardless of how you got your copies, you always have the freedom to copy and change the software, even to sell copies.
>>
>>57905794
But not everyone will want to change or improve the code becauz not everyone is a fucking programmer.

Today marks the beginning of my quest to seek out an answer to the question which will forever determine what kind of man I'll inevitably grow into:
Whether or not I agree with Richard Stallman.

Much research, hard philosophical questions, and self discovery lay before me. Wish me luck.
>>
>>57905828
Even if you don't you still benefit indirectly.
If the program developers add some features that invade your privacy, privacy minded individuals can fork it without these features. This also creates disincentive to profit in that way and to pressure others to add such malicious features.
